I made Classic Fallout styled box art for Fallout 3

Posted: 05 Feb 2018 11:32 AM PST

So for a while I've been working on a stylized physical fallout game collection with all of the games having their box similar to the boxes for Fallout 1, Fallout 2, and Tactics (I'm a big fan of the classic games). When I got to Fallout 3, I just couldn't find a render of t-45 power armor that fit well or I could make look like the box art for Fallout 1. I decided I would make one myself. I used to be involved in the Smash Bros. modding community so I already had some rendering and texturing on my belt. So after like ten different renders and a custom retexture I got it just right (IMO). It took a while to get it to make and I'm proud of it so here it is -

https://i.imgur.com/3jxqzJf.jpg

(TLDR) I made Fallout 3' box art styled like Fallout 1.

I'm going to start on Fallout 4 now, but I feel like the T-60's too similar to T-45. I'm leaning towards using a Gen 1 Synth since advanced power armor was used for Fallout 2 (Because of the villain aspect)

The toughest ones were, believe it or not, the caravan ones in New Vegas. Could not figure that game out for the life of me, but got 'em anyway through sheer stubborn persistence.

Upcoming Fallout Miniatures Game Will Have Narrative Mode + Let You Build Your Own Settlements

Posted: 05 Feb 2018 07:28 AM PST

So in a recent interview the folks behind Fallout Wasteland Warfare, an upcoming tabletop miniatures game set in the world of Fallout, gave some details on the narrative mode that will be in their game as well as how you'll be able to build your own settlements using caps etc scavenged in-game.

Seems like some really cool ideas, looking forward to how they implement this going forward and how it works as you play.

Has anybody else wandered the wasteland with their own entourage?

Posted: 05 Feb 2018 02:00 PM PST

I finally relented and used the mod where you can have all your named companions with you. I only have the guys I've met to keep it story-friendly. With multiple companions, I've stopped worrying about which dialogue choices to choose to max out affinity but rather answer as I would and let them sort themselves out. Particularly cool is how they pick up weapons and restock on their own.

As this is my second play through with all the DLCs, listening to their banter and observations makes me realize I missed a ton of character development the first time through. Having each guy confide their issues with you as you surpass affinity thresholds without even trying makes the whole thing much more organic. Having them fight side-by-side makes the entire experience so much more authentic than a solitary dude fighting through by himself. While they don't die, I still have to stimpack them which helps soak up the ridiculous amount of stimpacks you find lying around.

I'm surprised this wasn't in vanilla. Perhaps each perk point per additional companion would have been workable.

"Wow, hey! I'm Billy Knight and it's so great to be here in the Commonwealth. Hey, well if you've got to be common, you might as well be wealthy, am I right? No, but I kid. It's a wonderful place. I mean, it's a wonder it's a place at all! Have you seen these craters? Oy vey!"

I'm a stand-up comic currently working on a load screen replacer mod for FO4, featuring original content Billy Knight jokes about the Commonwealth. I'd love to get some feedback and hear your in-universe Fallout jokes as well. Check it out on Twitter and let me know what you think: @TouringBillyK

Is Fallout 4 a lot better than when it was released?

Posted: 05 Feb 2018 12:15 PM PST

Hey all,

No trolling post, no being obtuse, just trying to figure out if Fallout 4 is worth revisiting for me.

I love Fallout 1/2/3/NV, great games. Love the story, love the perks, love the variety of conversation options and living in that world.

When I played 4, it was fine...I got about 20 hours in and just gave it up. The perks were more about math bonuses, no story bonuses, lack of chat options given that everyone spoke, quests were empty, the world seemed empty and bad guys seemed to exist to just kill you instead of having their own purposes and motivations.

All that being said, how is the game now? I haven't touched any of the mods or DLC. Is it worth it for me to revisit? Is it a better game now? I know some things can't be changed as they are core mechanics and core to the structure. Anyone have good feedback I could make use of?

Question about Shaun

Posted: 05 Feb 2018 08:59 AM PST

Is it ever explicitly stated, in-game or by Bethesda, that Synth Shaun doesn't age? For that matter, do any Gen 3 Synths age? They're made out of flesh and bone, and have human DNA that decays over time, so surely they do.

It would seem odd and somewhat ironic that, in an open world post-apocalypse in a series that values player freedom, the player character would be forever burdened by a Synth child.

Are You Ready to Find out what makes you Special irl

Posted: 05 Feb 2018 11:24 AM PST

Long time lurker first time poster to reddit, Are you ready to see what makes you Special. If you've ever wanted to figure out what your wasteland wanderer stats would be through the S.P.E.C.I.A.L. system in real life, I found a way to measure your own S.P.E.C.I.A.L. traits irl through comparable feats. If you want to make a character around yourself in your next trip to the Strip, Diamond city or Capital wasteland, you can all though i would not recommend playing on the challenging difficulties, kudos if you can with the lack of planning. Also the scoring listed was made to work in game when you make a creatable character, so some of the scores may seem a little low but that is just in an attempt to not go over the in game limit.

  • Strength- According to Fallout, one strength point is equal to 25 pounds of carry weight (sorry to all those with small frame). Instead of following what the game goes by for carry weight at the absurd 200+ lbs, were going off of what the average adult man can bench of 135 pounds, as given by Livestrong.com. Now for every additional point beyond that is another 25 pounds (160, 185, ect), and if you cannot bench 135 pounds then you set this for 1.
  • Perception- This one is a little tricky because it is hard to find measurements of perception. The best test I could find were the Stroop tests, where they write the name of the color and color it a different color than what is written. Using a website that administers the test, such as the on Washington.edu, take two tests and compare the times each test took. This site in particular is useful because it gives a percentage of those who have taken the test. The following are broken down as following points, as that should encompass 95% of the population, but my breakdowns from times to points are entirely subjective.

1- 20-15 seconds

2- 10-15 seconds

3- 8-14 seconds

4- 4-7 seconds

5- 3-0 seconds

6- Test 2 was faster than Test 1

  • Endurance- Measuring Endurance in Fallouts senses is going to be a little difficult because the game classifies Endurance as how many hits you can take and your resistance to poison and diseases. Since finding your poison or pain tolerance can lead to some extreme and life threatening situations, and holding your breath underwater is lame as hell instead we're going to measure Endurance off of the Fallout 4 reference of overall health and fitness with mile times. The US army physical fitness guide claims that the average male should be able to run a seven minute mile, and a woman should be able to run a eight thirty on the top end. So placing that at the top end, and the other groups the points go as follow, given the breakdowns given by the Army.

2- 9:30< for men and <11 for women

3- 8:30- 9:15 for men, 10-10:45 for women

4- 7:45-8:30 for men, 9:45-10 for women

5- 7-7:45 for men, 9-9:45 for women

6- 6:30- 7 for men, 8:30-9 for women

7- < 6:30 for men and <8:30 for women

  • Charisma- The following personality types, according to the Briggs Myers test, is ordered into what is believed to be the more naturally charismatic people. If you think that these tests are bogus or it doesn't apply to you, I apologize but they're the only measurable statistic I could pull for being charismatic. Since this is just the general population and only a limited number of perks are given at the start, it's only between 3-6 but if you want to spread the 16 types into the 10 points the list they are is the proper order from least to most charismatic.

3- INFP, INFJ, INTP, ISFJ,

4- ISTJ, ISTP, ESFJ, ESTJ,

5- ENFP, INTJ, ENTJ, ENTP

6- ENFJ, ISFP, ESTP, ESFP

  • Intelligence- this one was the easiest because its just your IQ to match what point rounding down. I had to lower the scoring for this one because while a genius may be 145 IQ, that's 9 points in fallout, and would throw the entire scale out of whack if you wanted to make this a character, I limited the point values as follows.

3-85

4-100

5-115

6-130

7- 145

  • Agility-There are two ways you can define this, and that is either dexterity or nimbleness. To measure dexterity, honestly one of the best ways is Perfection, that game with the pegs that gave everyone PTSD as a child because you were too slow. The less exciting adult version of that test would be the O'Connor Finger Dexterity Pegboard test where you place 3 nails into holes, and finish when all 100 holes (10x10) are filled. However, those test boards cost over 100 dollars and i haven't found any data on times for completion so that is entirely subjective and hard to measure. To measure nimbleness, the easier method is the Illinois agility test, where three cones are placed in a T shape that's 30 ft long by 15 ft wide. The course is then ran by weaving around the cones. The following are the scores made to judge high school students but it's fair to claim they'd translate well for adults or be what measures agility, if not then it may need to be adjusted accordingly

2- >20.4 for men, >24 for women

3- 19.3- 20.3 for men, 23.1- 24 for women

4- 18.2- 19.3 for men , 21.8- 23 for women

5- 16.2- 18.1 for men, 18- 21.7 for women

  • Luck- dump the rest into here since it isn't measurable.

If you go over the starting points given in character customization then congratulations on being such a specimen of mankind. You may deduce whatever you wish at your leisure but must use next points in leveling up to match your score in Fallout 4 or seek the ways to increase your stats in New Vegas (That's right you're being punished for being good at life). You are allowed to improve your S.P.E.C.I.A.L. score in the wasteland as you please and go whatever route you want, this only applies for the starting scores. And remember to regularly study your Vault tech provided materials to prepare for survival and to answer the question, Do you know what makes you Special?

What other decades would make a good aesthetic for Fallout?

Posted: 05 Feb 2018 03:19 PM PST

Obviously the games are super entrenched in the American 1950's style, but what other periods in America's history would be fun to see? What sort of tunes would you like blasting from your Pip-boys? I would personally love a 70's disco vibe or 90's pop and punk.

A Good Survival Mode SPECIAL?

Not my first survival mode run, but the first one that I'm serious about beating the game with. Can anyone recommend a good build for it? A decent SPECIAL spread might be a good place to start.
