Dota 2 - Hero Discussion of the Day: Mangix, the Brewmaster (January 30th, 2018)

Hero Discussion of the Day: Mangix, the Brewmaster (January 30th, 2018)

Posted: 30 Jan 2018 02:06 PM PST

Mangix, the Brewmaster

Mangix the Brewmaster is a melee strength hero that can fill almost any role, though he is primarily seen as a carry, ganker, tank or initiator. He fits well into any lane, but is very experience dependent, which means he is often seen on the offlane or the midlane. His core abilities make him a respectable physical damage dealer and an especially good duelist since he has abilities that involve negating opposing auto-attacks while strengthening his own. However, his true power lies in his ultimate, Primal Split, which, if used properly, can by itself turn the tide of a team fight. Each of the three aspects of the Brewmaster are exceptionally powerful, with exceptional disables, survivability against magic and physical attacks, and damage; they are also able to charge recklessly into the enemy since the damage they take is not permanent, and very rarely will all three die before Primal Split ends. For this reason, Brewmaster is almost always built to fully maximize the potential of this ultimate, getting items such as Blink Dagger so that he can combo into his ultimate without risk of being initiated on, Heart of Tarrasque to ensure he can survive the first wave of stuns and burst in order to cast his ultimate, and of course Aghanim's Scepter to give his spirits his abilities, Thunder Clap to Earth, Drunken Haze to Storm, and Drunken Brawler to Fire, all independent of the original Brewmaster's cooldowns for his abilities.

Lore

Deep in the Wailing Mountains, in a valley beneath the Ruined City, the ancient Order of the Oyo has for centuries practiced its rites of holy reverie, communing with the spirit realm in grand festivals of drink. Born to a mother's flesh by a Celestial father, the youth known as Mangix was the first to grow up with the talents of both lineages. He trained with the greatest aesthetes of the Order, eventually earning, through diligent drunkenness, the right to challenge for the title of Brewmaster, that appellation most honored among the contemplative malt-brewing sect.

As much drinking competition as mortal combat, Mangix for nine days drank and fought the elder master. For nine nights they stumbled and whirled, chugged and struck, until at last the elder warrior collapsed into a drunken stupor, and a new Brewmaster was named. Now the new, young Brewmaster calls upon the strength of his Oyo forebears to speed his staff. When using magic, it is to his spirit ancestors that he turns. Like all Brewmasters before him, he was sent out from his people with a single mission. He wanders the land, striving toward enlightenment through drink, searching for the answer to the ancient spiritual schism. Hoping to think the single thought that will unite the spirit and physical planes again.

Attack Range: 150

Missile Speed: Instant

Base Attack Time: 1.7

Sight Range: 1800 (Day) / 800 (Night)

Turn Rate: 0.6

Spells

Thunder Clap

Slams the ground, dealing damage and slowing the movement speed and attack rate of nearby enemy land units.

Level Manacost Cooldown Casting Range Area Duration Effects
1 90 13s N/A 400 4s (hero) / 8s (creep) Slows attack speed by 25 and movespeed by 25%, also damaging enemies hit by 100
2 105 13s N/A 400 4s (hero) / 8s (creep) Slows attack speed by 35 and movespeed by 35%, also damaging enemies hit by 175
3 130 13s N/A 400 4s (hero) / 8s (creep) Slows attack speed by 45 and movespeed by 45%, also damaging enemies hit by 250
4 150 13s N/A 400 4s (hero) / 8s (creep) Slows attack speed by 55 and movespeed by 55%, also damaging enemies hit by 300

A slam of Mangix' mighty keg starts the festivities.

Drunken Haze

Drenches a target in alcohol, causing their movement speed to be reduced, and causing their attacks to have a chance to miss.

Level Manacost Cooldown Casting Range Area Duration Effects
1 25 11s 850 N/A 4.5s Slows the enemy's movespeed by 10% and causes them to have a 70% chance to miss
2 25 9s 850 N/A 4.5s Slows the enemy's movespeed by 20% and causes them to have a 70% chance to miss
3 25 7s 850 N/A 4.5s Slows the enemy's movespeed by 30% and causes them to have a 70% chance to miss
4 25 5s 850 N/A 4.5s Slows the enemy's movespeed by 40% and causes them to have a 70% chance to miss
  • Dispellable

  • Drunken Haze's projectile travels at a speed of 1600.

The Order of the Oyo's solution to all problems - another round!

Drunken Brawler

Passive

Gives a chance to avoid attacks and to deal critical damage. Drunken Brawler will always trigger if you have not attacked, or have not been attacked, in the last several seconds.

Level Manacost Cooldown Casting Range Area Duration Effects
1 N/A N/A N/A N/A N/A Causes Brewmaster to have a 10% evasion chance and a 10% chance to critical strike for 230% damage
2 N/A N/A N/A N/A N/A Causes Brewmaster to have a 15% evasion chance and a 15% chance to critical strike for 230% damage
3 N/A N/A N/A N/A N/A Causes Brewmaster to have a 20% evasion chance and a 20% chance to critical strike for 230% damage
4 N/A N/A N/A N/A N/A Causes Brewmaster to have a 25% evasion chance and a 25% chance to critical strike for 230% damage
  • Increases attack damage by an average of 13%/19.5%/26%/32.5% (with talent: 32.5%/39%/45.5%/52%) and survivability versus attacks by 11%/18%/25%/33% (with talent: 33%/43%/54%/67%), excluding the guaranteed crit/dodge.

  • The proc chances of multiple crit sources stack.

    • If two sources of critical strike proc at the same time, the higher multiplier has priority.
  • Drunken Brawler's evasion stacks multiplicatively with other sources of evasion.

  • Drunken Brawler's crit and evasion use pseudo-random distribution.

  • The guaranteed critical strike and guaranteed dodge chance use separate trigger timers, not actual ability cooldowns.

  • While either of them is not ready, Brewmaster can still passively evade attacks and perform critical strikes.

  • When the guaranteed critical strike is ready, Brewmaster's upper body emits particles, while a red streak is visible on the icon.

  • When the guaranteed dodge is ready, Brewmaster's lower body emits particles, while the icon's yellow background turns orange.

  • When both the guaranteed critical strike and dodge are ready, both of these visual indicators are visible and shown on the icon.

  • The guaranteed critical strike is only used up if the attack actually lands. Missed attacks do not reset its certain trigger timer.

  • The guaranteed evasion is only used up if an attack actually misses. Attacks with True Strike do not reset its certain trigger timer.

  • The sound and particles of the critical strike play upon start of the attack, not when the attack lands.

When Mangix won his title as the Brewmaster of the Order of Oyo, he also claimed his place in the mastery of inebriation.

Primal Split

Ultimate

Splits Brewmaster into elements, forming 3 specialized warriors, adept at survival. If any of them survive until the end of their summoned timer, the Brewmaster is reborn.

Level Mana Cost Cooldown Casting Range Area Duration Effects
1 125 140s N/A N/A 16s Splits Brewmaster into 3 specialized elements
2 150 120s N/A N/A 18s Splits Brewmaster into 3 specialized elements
3 175 100s N/A N/A 20s Splits Brewmaster into 3 specialized elements
  • Undispellable

  • Brewmaster is invulnerable and hidden during the split time and duration. Does not apply any form of dispel upon cast.

  • During Primal Split, Brewmaster is periodically moved to Earth's position. If Earth dies, to Storm's and if Storm dies, to Fire's. This affects multiple things such as:

    • When Primal Split ends, Brewmaster appears at Earth's location. If Earth is dead, at Storm's and if Storm is dead, at Fire's location.
    • Every aura Brewmaster has (including Gem of True Sight and Radiance) affects units around Earth, if Earth is dead, around Storm and if Storm is dead, around Fire.
    • Effects which react on heroes' presence (Smoke of Deceit, Marksmanship, Blur) react on Earth's presence, if Earth is dead, on Storm's and if Storm is dead, on Fire's.
    • Teleporting effects like Holy Persuasion or Relocate cause the periodic moving of Brewmaster to get canceled, so that the 3 notes above do not apply anymore.
  • The spirits spawn always in the same formation, forming an equilateral triangle which fits within a 100 radius circle.

    • The earth spirit is always spawned 100 range in front on Brewmaster's cast location.
    • The storm spirit is always spawned 50 range behind and 86.603 range to the left of Brewmaster's cast location.
    • The fire spirit is always spawned 50 range behind and 86.603 range to the right of Brewmaster's cast location.
    • Their facing angle equals Brewmaster's facing angle on cast.
  • The spirits are creep-heroes and ancient creeps, making them interact differently with several spells.

Primal Split Elements

  • Earth Element

    • Hurl Boulder: Throws a boulder at a unit, doing 50/100/150 damage and stunning it for 2 seconds.
    • Spell Immunity: Gives 100% magic resistance bonus.
    • Demolish: Deals bonus 90/180/270 damage to buildings.
    • Thunder Clap: Works as Brewmaster's Thunder Clap.
  • Storm Element

    • Dispel Magic: Does 1000 damage to summoned units in an 600 radius and purges most buffs or debuffs.
    • Cyclone: Encloses a unit in a tornado, removing it from the battlefield for 6 seconds (20 seconds if cast on creeps).
    • Wind Walk: Provides invisibility, 50% bonus movement speed and 100/160/220 attack damage when invisible for 20 seconds.
    • Drunken Haze: Works as Brewmaster's Drunken Haze.
  • Fire Element

    • Permanent Immolation: Burns nearby enemy units in a 220 radius for 15//30/45 damage/second.
    • Drunken Brawler: Works as Brewmaster's Drunken Brawler.

It isn't clear whether Mangix is consciously aware of his potent bond with nature, as it often occurs in the midst of a drunken stupor.

I play DotA2 since 6 months, and god why did I wait so long ?

Posted: 31 Jan 2018 05:13 AM PST

So. I'm currently 31 years old, and I've played A LOT of videogames since I'm 5. FPS, MMO, Strategy, RPG, Indies... Everything was good for me.

The only type of game I didn't tried was the Moba. I wasn't interested in it, how can we be ? Always the same map, always the same strategies, the same heroes, etc... I know what you think " god what a fool ". And you will be right !

My brother-in-law spoke to me about DotA for 5 years, since the release, always trying to enroll me.

In the end, I said yes, just to confirm to myself than it was lame.

I WAS WRONG

Since 6 months, I've played more than 200 hours. I like this game A LOT. Even if it his very very very VERY ( add more if you want ) hard for a noob.

I've never played any Moba before, so the learning curve was... like this :

  • " Don't go that way , you will be killed. See, told ya !"
  • " Why didn't you go that way ? You may have survived ! NOOO NOT THIS W... You're dead."
  • " USE YOUR FUCKING STICK ! USE YOUR FU... You're dead."
  • " Why did you go so close to him ? Hopefully I've saved you and... Oh, you're dead."
  • " Please put some wards. Not there. Not there either. There is useless. Don't go th... You're dead, goodbye"
  • " Now it's time for your ult... Oh, you're dead"

I play mainly CM and support roles, and I like it a lot. I see than in every game I play, I become better and better, I learn stuff everyday about other heroes and theirs capacities. I was told than I must know all the heroes and all theirs spells. Oh, and all the items. It's true. It's damn true. I didn't fully understand the game was so difficult and deep. You must play it to understand.

So there is no main goal in this post, just some things I wanted to write, and some advices I thought of :

  • Find people to play with you, alone it's very difficult to understand the game.
  • There is no stupid questions, only stupid anwsers.
  • Wards.
  • check your settings, there is a lot of nice things you can turn on.
  • Sentry.
  • Even if the game is about to be lost, try harder. Try things, try objects and new technics.
  • More wards & sentries.

And I also want to thanks my "teachers" who gave me the opportunity to learn at my pace this wonderful game, and their patience with my stupid noob mistakes.

And you . Why did you start ? Was it hard, too ?

EDIT : Wow I didn't think it will generate "so much" comments :D Nice to see that the community can have nice conversations sometimes haha

Why Play?

You will be experiencing matches that are more competitive, maybe something you arent used to and you want the opportunity to play competitively. Players will gain better knowledge about the game and grow to a higher MMR. Most players who play in the lower league after one season rank out of the lower season. You are also playing for FACEIT points which you can redeem at the end of each season for Dota 2 skins and IRL equipment. Also as stated previously, you will meet new people and make new friends to play Dota with.

How to Join?

Interesting mathematical observation about how diverse DOTA2 is

Posted: 31 Jan 2018 09:35 AM PST

I see people claim that in an ARTS you have "the same heroes every game". With 115 heroes I thought surely that cannot be true and am delighted to tell you it isn't. This is purely a bit of interesting fluff, but some maths can show that there are eighteen quadrillion possible combinations of heroes.

There are

115 heroes
combinations of 10 heroes of those 115 combinations

so C(115,10) = 115!/(2(5!)(115-10)!) = 18784179000000000 or 18,784,179,000,000,000

which is eighteen quadrillion, seven hundred and eighty four trillion, one hundred and seventy nine billion possible different combinations.

At the time of writing, the 3,709,952,859th match has just been played - for reference that's the three billion seven hundred and nine million nine hundred and fifty two thousand eight hundred and fifty ninth match.

So there's no way every combination of heroes has ever been played. Or ever will be played. And there have likely been duplicates, but probably not enough to make a large difference.pudge 30% pickrate anyone? Next time someone tells you an ARTS like dota has no variety in it's gameplay, throw this figure at them.

EDIT: Some commenters have pointed out a slight miscalculation. I have amended the calculation.

The character lock is killing new players and having all the characters immediately available was one of the main pros to people starting Dota 2. Valve is moving in the wrong direction.

The 20 hero lock for 25 games is taking one of the main things that new players had as an advantage over other MOBAs. Dota has every hero immediately accessible for free, but now you are limited to 20 for 25 games which unless you play Turbo (which is not at all a good starting point for Dota) then you are in for a while just to get to the meat. I got an entire friend group of mine who play League and Smite to play Dota with me and they are stuck playing a bunch of heroes that they are not interested in playing. I can swap someone a hero they want, but I am one person and there are four of them. It is one of the biggest detriments to them playing and is the reason 2 people are already almost done trying to play the game since they found more interesting heroes that are beyond the character lock. I should not have to be in this scenario, what exactly is this character lock supposed to stop anyways? New people picking Invoker? Does that really matter in the long run as opposed to making ease of access to new players?

ESL One Genting 2018 (from a live spectator's perspective)

Posted: 30 Jan 2018 11:38 PM PST

It's probably really late to post about this now but what the heck. I'd love to share my experience during the event. Background: first time in Malaysia, 2nd ESL One event, got the Plus ticket, went with boyfriend and our close friend. These are my opinions and observations. Feel free to share your inputs and comments!

So I was just as bummed as most people here when I found out games were going to be streamed on Facebook. Pitchfork was out but I didn't really complain much since I knew I was going to be watching it live (selfish, I know).

The venue they chose was cool IMO. Arena of Stars was huge but not intimidating. It wasn't as hard to get in and out of your seats. There were a lot of restaurants and fast food chains in the area. Compared to ESL One Manila which was held in MOA, it was better in terms of food access and over-all spectator format (neck didn't strain since monitors were in front and at eye level).

Sidenote: having resto and hotels nearby meant you could see most of the teams just walking around and having meals there!

Myself and EternalEnvy

Saw KuroKy with Liquid walking around so I asked him for a pic. Sorry for ambush D:

Kpii during the after party!

Their game schedules were also good. Games would start at 3pm and end at around 9pm (depends if the games went all the way to a game 3). It was better for everyone - players, live spectators and venue employees. This is comparing to our experience during the ESL One Manila 2016 where games started at around 11am and ended late at night. That was really draining. Cleaners kept asking if and when the event would end. Plus it was hard to get a taxi/transportation but I mostly blame that on the venue and our country's poor transportation system.

My only complaint would be the pick/ban screen. We couldn't see which heroes were banned. They were too small.

Also huge shot out to the Malaysian Dota fans! Really cool people and kept the hype. Also thanks to Mushi for leading us to the venue. If you read this please know we are grateful (ಥ ͜ʖಥ)

And thank you to ESL for organizing the event. Hopefully the stream thing gets sorted out because I actually like the organization. Feelsbadman

Edit: re-uploaded photo because I uploaded a blur pic lmao

Edit2: added pic of kpii
