The 3 Stages of a Dota 2 Player

Posted: 16 Feb 2018 09:17 AM PST

No, unless you're Merlini

Posted: 15 Feb 2018 10:07 PM PST

Merlini holds a special place in our hearts for varying reasons, and I want to share why he means so much to me even though he doesn't know it.

A friend and I started playing dota about 12 years ago, around the 6.34b era iirc. We used to go to our favourite lan cafe and just play casual 2v2s, 3v3s etc. Living in Pakistan, we didn't know of any professional scene in this game. In fact we never even considered that there could be real 'pro players' in gaming. We used to browse dota-allstars quite a bit though. I remember a post asking whether jungle Juggernaut could be viable. I remember an exact reply to that post: 'No, unless you're Merlini'.

That was the turning point. Who is Merlini? Is he just another random player? Why does this guy know his name? I told my friend about it and we started searching for 'Merlini dota' and were just blown away. We found his legendary Zeus triple kill on shaker, venge and leshrac with insane tango-tree play and clarity usage. We found his Rexxar jungling guide and found out this dude has invented a new way to play. We found out that he actually plays in a professional team called Meet Your Makers!

We found out about gg-no-re and started downloading MYM vs VP games. No casting, sometimes a guy called inde_ed with a Gordon Freeman avatar would have casted a game very casually. We were just amazed at this new world we didn't even know existed. Soon we were following the pro scene religiously. A couple of years later we were over the moon when we found out a fellow Pakistani and friend amartnt got the chance to play competitively in Kuroky's team!

It was a crazy time for us, and we grew up with it. Not many folks here knew the pro scene but we used to sit in my friend's room downloading replays and just watching in awe at these amazing players from MYM and VP. Vigoss, Ars-Art, NS, Admir, Jolie, Sahka, Merlini, Maelk, H4nni, Mania, Slahser, Levent. And other 'random' players like JollyJoker (all chat master), US|Wedge (techies pro), hitomi (Rhashta specialist), Loda (farming god and inventor of the deny), pink priestess (MYM girls team) and quite a few more.

Our love for this game grew exponentially because of these times and the memories we have are priceless. And it all began from a simple sentence: 'No, unless you're Merlini'.

Today we are much older, are married and live in different countries. We'll maybe play a game together once every two months. But we still follow the professional scene religiously. And every now and then we remember those awesome times and we remember Merlini and his jungling and his zeus. Our origins.

So Merlini, I can not thank you enough. I just want to let you know how much you have contributed to this game and how you have made so many people's lives that much better. We all wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors and salute you for your contribution to this game we all love.

tl:dr; gtg exam! (MYM vs VP reference)

Merlini's influence on Dota. Why old school players hold him with such high regard.

Posted: 16 Feb 2018 05:05 AM PST

A lot of my friends who started Dota in the last few years don't really understand why MYM.Merlini was once the gold standard of Dota like how Liquid.Miracle- is now. I wanted to make this post to show new players and refresh the memory of old players on how influential Merlini was on the game we know and love.

A lot of this will be taken from this excellent article on the history of dota on liquipedia. Please give it a read. Shoutout to the author(s).

Merlini rose to prominence in a time when Dota was a very young game. The game wasn't as accessible or easy to learn as it is today. Any tricks and strategies developed were either earned by oneself or directly from those who knew it. YouTube guides, broadcast online matches were rare and hard to come by.

The level of the top players back then might not seem like much compared to what we see now, but relatively, these players were held in the same regard as Midone, RTZ and miracle now.

Lets take a look back to the 6.32 era:

Aside from coL, JMC was another North American powerhouse. Everyone on the team was of Chinese ethnicity. Beyond a doubt, Merlini's influence was the greatest. He played the most imbalanced Silencer of the time, which combined with the dream-like grandeur of his playstyle and his breathtaking performances filled countless DotA players with admiration. It was during this era that Merlini raised Silencer to the hero's peak of popularity. Merlini first made his name in IHLs (in-house league) where dominance in solo lanes, farming and clutch moves made him memorable.

Here we already see Merlini was making a mark coming out of the famous NA Dota Allstar IHL and made a mark in the competitive scene.

Merlini was one of the earliest players to think about Dota in terms of the smaller aspects of the game like farming and last-hitting. Dota was largely dependent on general mechanical skill, macro game strats and execution back then. Merlini and a few others showed the importance of the smaller aspects.

coL.ezy was the era's most famous farmer after JMC.Merlini. Nowadays, everyone knows how important last-hitting and farming is, but back then not many players focused on the fundamentals. ezy's epic replays playing Clinkz showed everyone firsthand how important last-hitting and farming was. It was only after watching his replays that many people began to practice last-hitting diligently as a fundamental skill in DotA.

Even in this article it is mentioned indirectly that Merlini was the era's most famous farmer. Even today one can learn something from Merlinis farming patterns.

Merlini was never a person who was afraid to experiment and develop innovative strategies in professional games.
Take a look around the 6.37 era.

During this tournament in a match between MYM and WE, the recently-joined MYM.Merlini used for the first time ever in a competitive match Boots of Travel (BoT) Tinker strategy of flying everywhere on the map to gank. So it was that a classic DotA strategy emerged.

Side note: We now know Merlini has some part of the blame for the tinker cancer.

Shoutout:

Surprisingly, this strategy was developed by a pub player called Virot2 who had been perfecting it since 6.27. He published an influential guide between the 6.32 and 6.37 versions that was the first to advocate such a build considered highly unorthodox at the time. If there was a case of a pub player revolutionizing the DotA world, this would be it.

Having joined MYM, Merlini showed a renewal of his 6.32 era prestige and influence, filling the skies with heat-seeking rockets and once again propelling himself to dazzling stardom. To say that he was the most influential DotA player in the world wouldn't be an overstatement. He became the first player after Fear to attain Legend status.

There you have it. Second only to Mr.Dota FearDarkness himself, Merlini quickly became M-god. (The god title was given by the chinese fans and was not something bestowed on the unworthy.)

Lets jump ahead to 6.41. The trilane and the global strats emerged.

Back in the 6.37 era, MYM.Merlini had demonstrated the global gank strategy based around Tinker. Drawing on his legendary abilities to dazzle the world once more, he demonstrated that his understanding of fog was simply incomparable.

After showing the importance of Farming/Last-hitting, Fog abuse and global ganking would not be the same without this man.

Merlini was also among only 3 NA players to make GotFrag list of Top 10 DotA Players of All Time in 2007.

Lets take a look at another integral part of todays game that Merlini had a hand in: Lvl 1 jungle.

MYM defeated T_T with their own version of the devastating global strategy, swapping out Spectre for the famous MYM Tinker surprisingly not played by Merlini. This is because they introduced an innovation of their own, a jungling Beastmaster by Merlini together with a jungling Furion to quickly reach the all-important Level 6.

It soon became common to place heroes with strong lvl 6 ultimates in jungle because back then jungle was very efficient and sometimes even faster than lane. Lycan was one of the most feared heroes because of his jungle prowess.

YT guide on jungle BM as posted. Credits to u/PudgeMon for the link.

Rumor has it that Merlini went on Vacation to Taiwan and was never the same when he returned. Whether it was just being out of touch with the game or just a string of bad luck, Merlini failed to have the dazzling influence he once had.

But when you look back at it all and just looking at the effect his career has had on the game today its safe to say Merlini, aka M-God, is among the Dota legends.

Extras:

M-Gods most famous play. 1v3 Zeus

Zeus spoof name Merlini after his plays.

Merlini, if you read this know that I will always remember MYM.Merlini and his performances!

7.09 Secret Quest?

Posted: 16 Feb 2018 03:49 AM PST

Ever since 6.29, Icefrog has included secret quests in every x.x9 patch. Most of the time, these quests lead to a boss fight with who would be a new hero (6.49 was Invoker, 6.59 Elder Titan, 6.69 Phoenix, 6.79 Monkey King). You could find these quests by exploring a private lobby. Perhaps this will remain the same, or something has been included in the demo map?

We also had bananas appear from trees in private lobbies not too long ago, before MK was released.

Has anyone found or heard of any hints now that we're in 7.09? It's been a while since the last x.x9 patch since ver 6 ended on 6.88, but now we've finally come back around.

Two weeks updates are a great idea

Posted: 16 Feb 2018 06:45 AM PST

It's pretty amazing to know for sure when the game will be updated, since now, if something isn't ready, it gets bumped 2 weeks instead of delaying the patch.

Watching qualifiers is all the more entertaining as you can watch pro players figuring out what the changes entail on the fly. You aren't too worried about something being terrible, since you don't have to wait three months for it to change (extra creep mid, I'm looking at you).

Even playing the game is more enjoyable, I feel, as what drew me to Dota was all the experimentation and learning that came along with it.

I looked @ /r/nba and they have some nice features we could use here

Posted: 16 Feb 2018 05:57 AM PST

  1. http://nba-mod-bot.herokuapp.com I think this kind of flair system could be pretty cool Pick team and player tag flair. Player must have played for team in the past so you can put Singsing Speed Gaming flair or some Bulldog Alliance if you want. Or instead of team you can have player and hero. Dendi-Pudge or Arteezy-Ember Spirit. Or maybe even caster-hero Zeus Merlini RIP.

  2. Also it would be nice to have results on top of page.

Option choose spoilers on or off, but with so many games and so many different events, it's hard to keep track of who is doing what and when at a glance. I realize there is sticky for games of day, but they change out and people have no idea that Col beat EG 2-0 or something without navigating 2-3 links or checking 4-5 clicks in Liquipedia.

Maybe some extra work, but I think it's very useful quality of life changes.

A guide to drafting for beginners

Posted: 16 Feb 2018 12:03 AM PST

Part 1: Roles and team composition

1. Cores

So far as I know, we can call the Mid, Carry and Offlane the Cores of the team. I'll talk about offlane later, but what I understand is, the mid and safe lane should complement each other on what they do in the game.

a) One of these heroes (never strictly one or the other) reaches its peak and starts fighting in the mid-late game. Therefore, he farms and split pushes, and also sometimes buys Midas. The other complements it by coming online earlier (position 2), and therefore, fights to make space for the greedy core (position 1) to come online. He fights with the team, pushes towers, and generally is good at taking Roshan.
eg. If the mid is TA, she dominates her lane, comes online early and allows for a greedy safe lane pick. If the mid is Invoker, he buys Midas, farms his Aghs and accelerates it by getting sunstrike kills, therefore requiring an early game, fighting safe-laner.

b) One of the heroes primarily deals or builds items to deal magical damage in the late game, and the other deals physical damage. The lack of either can make itemization for the enemy easier.
eg. Again, if you have TA mid, you wouldn't really need Sven in the safe lane, even if he's a really strong hero and can solo against some offlaners. In this case Morphling or Necrophos might complement TA well by dealing great magical burst damage.

2. Supports

There are more ways to classify supports, I think, maybe because I play support more often.

a) One support is greedy (position 4) and the other sacrificial (position 5). The position 4 focuses mostly on his own items that might change the tide of the game, are core or simply crucial, such as blink dagger, because the hero initiates fights with disables. The position 5 buys wards, sentries, smokes, dusts and is usually satisfied with boots + wand even in the mid game.

b) One support roams and the other lanes with their safe laner. The laner pulls and stacks creep camps, harasses the offlaner and comes to the carry's rescue if he is ganked. The roamer ganks the enemy mid, harasses or sometimes kills the offlaner with the safe laners and steals the enemy bounty runes. They may also secure river runes for their mid and stack when there's nothing else to do. Earlier, I was under the impression that position 4 is always the roamer and position 5 is always the laner. However, I've learned this is not strictly true.
eg. The best example would be KOTL, who doesn't have decent lockdown to gank and therefore usually lanes and farms his Aghs, which is core for the hero.

c) One support is defensive and the other is offensive. Meaning, one support has heals/saves/defensive buffs such as armour or movement speed to save cores and also sometimes dispel hard lockdown from the enemy. The other support is offensive/disables/initiates and sometimes has a key high damage skill that is particularly strong in the early game.
eg. Oracle and Venge played as supports are usually defensive and use their ultimates when their core has a hard lockdown on them, such as Primal Roar and Lasso. Heroes like Shadow Shaman and Lion primarily have heavy disables and burst damage.

3. Offlane

The offlane is a position that I believe is most flexible or versatile, when it comes to their role in that particular game. Traditionally, their role has been to imitate and disable, however this has evolved over time. I believe they usually fill a gap that the team composition does not have. This is not mutually exclusive, but the most popular/strongest offlaners are those that can:

a) Lane solo against the enemy safe lane, therefore being able to not only get farm and solo xp, but also contest the enemy carries farm.
b) Be able to retreat to the jungle if necessary, when pressured by the enemy support team.
c) Have some form of hard lockdown i.e. a spell that pierces spell immunity (BKB and the like), and even better, cannot be countered with a Linken's Sphere or be dispelled.
d) Make space, either by being extremely elusive, hard to kill or simply have controlled units that push the lane.
eg. Dark Seer and Nature's Prophet for split push, when the team doesn't have any. Especially good, if in the rare case that both the other cores come online early and fight and take towers, allowing for the greedier offlane. Magnus for comboing with Melee physical DPS heroes that can both accelerate their farm and amplify their damage in teamfights. Enigma for the hard lockdown with pure damage which is not countered by Linken's and also be able to push with eidelons.

Part 2: Counters and team synergy

General rules

Firstly, a general but not strict guideline to Dota that has been implemented for the longest time and can be applied to most high level games:

Split push counters > teamfight heavy lineups.

Ganking/map control counters > Split push lineups.

Teamfight/deathball counters > Ganking/map control lineups.

Strict rules

We should all keep these points in mind irrespective of the nature of the draft:

a) Take advantage of the current meta and pick the strongest combos.
b) Take into account what heroes your team can play.
c) Pick strong lane matchups for your heroes.
d) Have a specific plan on hand and ban hard counters to that strat.

Execution specific rules

a) Draft cores who can flash farm. Preferably those who can fight in between farming and continue taking objectives after fights.
b) Draft tower damage. Direct damage from heroes that support the Drow strat, specific heroes that have siege damage such as Tiny or Brewmaster or heroes that ignore tower armour such as Jakiro, Pugna and Leshrac.
c) Pick teamfight heroes that have one long cooldown high impact spell such as Warlock, Earthshaker, Enigma and one short cooldown constant initiation spell such as Axe and Slardar.
d) Draft as many disables as possible. Also, besides stuns, have good chase potential or 'catch' on the team.
e) Draft atleast one hero that can solo Roshan or take Roshan with the team since it is crucial for high ground siege.

Part 3: Draft phases and hero combinations

First phase

a)Bans: Strong meta heroes or signature heroes for the enemy team, if that team is known or recognised.
b)Picks: Versatile heroes that can fill multiple positions, to keep an open draft and allow adjustment and thus provide a good lane matchup for your heroes.
eg. Mirana, Puck, Earthshaker, Sand King, Timbersaw, Faceless Void.

Second phase

a)Bans: Heroes that synergize well with the enemy's first phase picks.
b)Picks: Heroes that synergize well with your first phase picks.

Last pick

a)Ban: Specific ban to enemy last pick's signature hero or strong counter to your potential last pick.
b)Pick: Strong finisher that complements your team and allows for a favorable game for your MVP player (most likely mid).

About me:

I am an average Dota player who started playing in 2014 and am not a high MMR player/expert at the game in any sense, nor do I claim to be. I merely have great interest in the practice of teaching Dota to new players and this is my attempt at writing a guide as a means to introduce players to what composes of a strong, well rounded-team in the game. I don't specialise in one hero particularly but tend to be more versatile in my picks, often selecting a hero that my team requires the most rather than fixing my role at game start and can say with confidence that I can play all heroes in the game decently, if not above mediocrity. Obviously, not all of the rules in this guide can be successfully applied in one game but I write this after noticing a general trend of lack of knowledge of what remaining position must be filled to complement the team during the drafting stage of pubs, which usually results in jungler picks, even in today's meta.

Appreciate any and all feedback to improve the guide and if at all seen as useful, and if the feedback is positive, would like to know if an expansion on part 3, maybe even an intermediate guide on the drafting order and planning that takes place in serious games is welcome.

Cheers!

P.S. Sorry for any bad formatting, grammatical errors or tldrs. This is my first time posting on reddit! Be kind!
