Best stuff to read/watch about Zelda

Posted: 13 Jan 2018 07:58 AM PST

Hey, I'm new in Zelda. I was introduced by botw and I wanted to know which of existing book/manga/comics/lore/anime/anything else is the best to read/watch ? (aside from video games)

I saw various books, but I'm not sure everything is top quality, so i need to you as a guide. Thanks :)

PS: I'm also interested if you have goodies and youtube channel/video recommandations

Would you pay full price for a fully fleshed out BotW2, set 100 years earlier before the return of Calamity Ganon when Hyrule was still in it's prime?

Posted: 13 Jan 2018 07:16 AM PST

I'd buy such a game to tide me over. I'd love to re-explore Hyrule before it was ruined.

BotW is the only game I’ve played 200+ hours of, and I still feel like it ends too quick.

It's now 2018, the 20th Anniversary of Ocarina of Time.

Posted: 13 Jan 2018 05:14 AM PST

Ocarina of Time was released back in 1998, sometime in late November. As the game that shaped the entire series for a very long time, how much you wanna bet Nintendo has something in store for us to celebrate once autumn comes?

Just got the DLC for BOTW and... (Spoilers)

Posted: 13 Jan 2018 03:09 AM PST

Why... in God's sweet merciful queef... is the "start to finish" trial... so unreasonably difficult? I have been doing this trial for like 45 minutes and I keep dying one way or another. It's like "fuck-you" difficult. Fucking why? This whole game I have had no trouble with bosses, trials, puzzles, anything. Then suddenly this trial comes around and it is just tossing my salad like I dipped my ass in chocolate. Please someone tell me they also struggled with this trial? Make me feel better...

As a returning fan - thoughts on Virgin BOTW Play through

Posted: 13 Jan 2018 09:34 AM PST

First, a little about me...

I grew up with Link's awakening and Link to the past, but Ocarina of Time was the first Zelda game I actually owned and played start to end. The others were borrowed. I grew up in the 90's and in my late 20's right now. I was a hardcore Nintendo fan. Right up until I got a PC and a copy of Blizzard's StarCraft (RTS game) and Diablo1 and soon, Diablo 2...and then World of Warcraft. Nintendo was a distant sight in the rear view mirror. I still got a 360, PS3, Xbox One to play all those exclusives over the years. I've played everything "big".

Nintendo, and Zelda, were dead to me

I always thought Nintendo's days were over after the N64. I got a Wii just cause and that was a failure in my eyes. The lack of a Z-Axis in the controller at launch felt like a scam. Ocarina of Time and Wind Waker were the last Zeldas I played. Every E3, it was just more gimmicks after gimmick

The Switch More of the same? Maybe. Maybe not. But then the BOTW reviews came in. Potential GOTY? What? I haven't heard this level of praise for a Nintendo game in...over a decade. Still, I ignored it. But then came the actual GOTY award and it beat PUBG. So I was thinking "ok fine"

So...I got a Switch and BOTW+DLC all at once and booted up a Master Mode play through.

My Thoughts

The combat is great. I like how you're not locked into anything It's challenging, especially on master mode. I had to run from many fights or use every ounce of equipment/surroundings I had. I strategically had to plot my ways through. But even with this daunting difficulty and the reality of breaking equipment, I explored and ran into the ice dragon at the Wisdom Spring. I couldn't kill him due to a lack of equipment but it was fun.

The exploration is second to none. Even Skyrim or Fallout! Man, being able to climb and walk through shit reminded me back of Vanilla World of Warcraft but fully realized. There was secret shit, korok seeds, crazy mobs, sights, all within a good climbs reach!!

The bosses are unfortunately lacking. Radunia/Daruk's Beast was hard as that was the first one and I wasn't familiar with the games mechanics yet. I didn't know my bombs could float! Tough! But it quickly became the age old MMORPG term "Tank and spank". I halted my adventure and gathered the Master Sword and Hylian shield. Urbosa and Raveli's beast stages were unfortunately, cake walk. Even in Master mode, I think I cleared those dungeons in 15-30 minutes and had a 1 minute boss fight. Quite underwhelming.

The story is a refreshing approach to a Zelda game. No more linear "OH GOD Zelda got kidnapped by an Ethnic man. Time to find 7 strangers in some messed up world and collect crystals!". I like how the photo memories are optional and piece together a nice back-narrative.

One thing I do not like is the lack of a clear antagonist. Who is Calamity Ganon and why do I care? I really don't. I'm about to knock on Ganon's doors and I have all the beasts+Good portion of the DLC done, and a partially charged Master Sword. I really do not care or have any hype walking into this. In fact, I really don't want to because I have this feeling the fight will be more than underwhelming. Many have said that the fight is weaker than a Lynel and can be done right after the Great Plateau. I think a game can be done that's better than BOTW that has a strong narrative wrapped up in the explorative nature of BOTW.

Overall

Yeah, this game deserves GOTY and I haven't logged 50++ Hours into a game in over 15+++ years thinking "Please don't be over!" and not thinking it's a chore. Every hour was fun!

BOTW takes the cake...it triumphed over a huge list for me...

  • Metal Gear Solid 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 - All of the games have too much 11th hour bullshit
  • Mass Effect 1,2,3, Andromeda - These felt like a grind, no matter how much space pussy I got.
  • I have 50+ Hours on Mass Effect Andromeda. Every hour felt like me trying to pull a trigger on my head but I forced myself to finish that game on a completionist run
  • World of Warcraft (I know they're MMORPGs but the exploration in that game was #1 ....up until now
  • Fallout. It was a cool open world but it felt shallow compared to BOTW for some reason
  • Elder Scrolls Oblivion/Skyrim - The exploration in that game is good but some of the quests are meh. Hail Sithis! I mean, Dark brotherhood for life but the main story in those games are ass and you "need" mods for them to be good.
  • Resident Evil 0, 1, 2, 3,4, Code Veronica, 5, 6, 7 - Combat is either ass or its not scary or the story is trash
  • StarCraft 1 & 2 - That story went to ass. I'm sorry if anyone is a fan but I was a MEGA fan. Drunk ass Raynor hitches a ride with Kerrigan to have space honey moon and etc
  • The Last of us - Meh, overrated game
  • Tomb Raider (and Rise) - these are great games but still nothing close to BOTW
  • Deus Ex - Feels like a grind

The one game BOTW can't triump, but does match/tie up nicely is The Witcher 3. If you guys enjoyed BOTW and have a decent enough PC, I'd highly, highly, highly recommend The Witcher 3 and ALL of the DLC.

What I'd like to see in the next Zelda

Either a strong narrative game or another BOTW on steroids. Even on Mastermode, the combat and difficulty scale became extremely easy after obtaining the Master Sword and 1-2 Champion Powers. I think Nintendo put themselves in a fox hole when they decided you could beat the game in 21 minutes. Walking around, blowing up Guardian Scouts with a damaged Pot lid (via Parry) is...."cool" but detrimental to the game's scaling IMO. My entire experience was "Get One shotted and Figure out the fight pattern." Then 100-0 the mob without ever getting touched. Armor is for looks and utility bonuses/breaking progression barriers". Maybe because it was Mastermode, but armor was trivial due to many things 1-2 shotting you. A Shrine Guardian scout poking you with a Battle Axe takes out around 15-20 hearts on me and I have 2/3rd the Guardian Armor set, and it's upgraded. Repairing weapons should be slightly easier. Giving away a diamond to repair a shitty Champion weapon? Come on. I don't care how cool Daruk's basher is. We're gamers - we have hording mentalities haha! Most of us don't even want to use Guardian Arrrows. You think I'm going to fork over diamonds for a mid-tier weapon????

Shit this was a long post. Anyways, glad to be back.
