A Melee 2018 Primer. Part 1: Hbox

Posted: 11 Jan 2018 05:47 PM PST

I decided to make several posts as primers for the coming year in Smash Melee, both for my own benefit catching back up with the scene and as a way to help others who, like me, want a primer on what to look for in current year. I will be posting one a day going forward until I run out of ideas. Many will cover people you expect; I will also add a few you might not. Anyways, I will start tonight by looking at Hbox.

Hbox

First Places: 17

Best Wins: Summit, TBH, Shine, SnS, DH Austin

Hbox is likely to be the world number 1 according to the MIOM rankings, and there is a reason for that. The upthrow cheese master, and Chipotle's number 1 customer, has been increasingly dominant toward the end of the year, winning the last 6 tournaments he entered including TBH and Shine. Add onto that wins at Summit (which I consider to be the biggest tourney going right now), Smash and Splash, and DH Austin, and you have the best resume of 2017. It speaks volumes that 3rd place behind Armada and Mango at EVO feels like a disappointing finish.

Hbox has also been the very definition of consistency. His worst placements all year were 4th place efforts at SSC (behind only Mango, m2k, and Plup), G4 (behind Armada, Mango, and m2k), and the lower tier tourney Smash Conference (behind m2k, Wizzy, and SFAT). When your worst placements all year are 4th at majors to gods and demigods, you are the definition of consistent.

Beyond all that, Hbox is THE dominant force in Melee and has been for a bit. Why do I say this? Because he is basically the only player that the other Gods have to design their own playstyles around. Would m2k, Armada, Mango, and Plup play Fox as seriously without Hbox? No, probably not, at least not to the extent they do now. Hax, it turns out, was right, but not for the reasons he thought. In his arrogance, he believed that Fox was destined to rule the meta. But he was blinded by his own shines. Fox is not a sith lord ruling over the galaxy with an iron fist and unbelievable frame data. He is a hero on a mission to liberate the meta from the domination of the dark lord Puff. 666xx is almost upon us, and Hbox is the reason why. Who knows, maybe seeing Hbox winning so much will actually make Mango stop drinking at tourneys in an effort to defend 'Murica's honor as home of dumbness that works for some reason (mangoLUL).

So what storylines will dominate Hbox's 2018 campaign? Probably the biggest storyline in all Melee is the ongoing rivalry between Hbox and Armada, who remain neck and neck for the 1st place ranking. These titans have dominated the game in the recent past, and will no doubt be trying to one up each other going forward. Hbox vs Armada is THE MU that is dominating the top level of major tourneys. And I, for one, look forward to the next chapter of this rivalry, which is no doubt among the all-time great rivalries in the history of the game.

Beyond this, the main storyline for Hbox is twofold. First, we will see whether he can continue his dominant performance in the last part of 2017. This leads to the second storyline: How will Hbox and the other top players push the Puff-Fox meta going forward? Fox Puff has dominated the meta in recent history; no MU more defines recent melee history. Hbox's Puff may not be the most "hype" character to watch for some (oh look another back air ResidentSleeper), but the development of the Puff Fox meta is a fascinating story in its own right. Hbox, together with Armada, Mango, M2K, and Plup, have pushed that MU to almost unimaginable heights. And you can bet that all those Foxes have been scheming to dethrone the dark lord of the Floaties, Hbox's Puff. Their efforts to undermine Hbox's dominance, and Hbox's counters, will no doubt continue to push this game to ridiculous levels.

Finally, some fringe storylines. Recently, Hbox has said that Falco is his official secondary. It's rare to see the Puff master play other characters, so seeing how he handles Falco (if he busts out the bird) would be fascinating. Hbox, more than any other God, is a character specialist. When he plays other characters, we get a chance to see how one of the best in the world approaches the game from a different angle. Even if his secondaries aren't top notch (HFox LUL) and even if we only see them against scrubs in Netplay/Pools, it is still interesting to see a top player playing a different character.

TL;DR: Hbox is the dominant force in the Meta right now, the dark lord of the floaties. The other gods, especially Armada who seems to view Hbox as something of a nemesis and who views Puff with a hatred that burns with the fury of 1000 suns, will continue to innovate the Fox-Puff MU in an effort to dethrone the dark lord. The interplay between Hbox and the godly Foxes is THE story to watch in 2018.

With so much talent in Smash 4, which players were you rooting for from the start? For me, it was Kirihara coming to America and winning FPS2.

SC Smash Winter 2017 Power Ranking

Posted: 11 Jan 2018 10:19 AM PST

Hey Reddit! NyxTheShield here, creator of the Godot Smash Engine and I just released the first Alpha version!

Posted: 11 Jan 2018 06:22 PM PST

The Godot Smash Engine - Alpha 0.1 Release

What is this?

The Godot Smash Engine is a working in progress (And soon to be Open Source) engine that aims to provide a full smash experience, with the ease of expansion and customization of other game engines like MUGEN provides.

Alpha Release Notes

After a hard week of fine tuning a lot of the basic mechanics and implementing basic functionalities, I can say I am finally comfortable with how the engine behaves right now. But I don't know everything, so I need YOUR input and feedback to see if the engine really feels good enough to move on developing the rest of it.

In other words, this is an alpha version to test mobility options of the engine.

What's Currently Working

  • Dashing
  • Crouching
  • Landing *Jump
  • Double Jump
  • Directional Air Dodge
  • Ledges
  • Stage Collision and Platforms

Advances Techniques

  • Melee Wavedash
  • Melee Perfect Wavedash
  • Perfect Ledge Dash
  • RoA Platform Drops (Drop while Running)
  • RoA Wavedash (Air Dodge on Jump Squat)
  • Pivot Ledgedrop

Usage of this Alpha

At launch, you will find a button setup screen. Just click on each box and press the corresponding button in your joystick/Keyboard. This build supports any kind of Joypad or Keyboard. To map a stick just press it in the corresponding direction. Dont Mix Inputs From Both. You will get unexpected behaviour, specially with airdodges. When you are done, press spacebar. Button configs are saved so you don't need to map your inputs everytime you launch the game.

If you fall off stage, press spacebard and you will respawn in the middle of the stage.

If you find any bug or you can't set up your controls correctly, leave a comment below!

What does one do about collusion in Smash tournaments?

Posted: 11 Jan 2018 02:18 PM PST

As a T.O., what can I do to maintain competitive integrity at tournaments?

Numerous times the top 2 in brackets have told me that they'd agreed to split, in which case I tell them "I'll pay you out however the bracket tells me to, and whatever you want to do with the money afterward is none of my business." No one has really contested that, so that doesn't concern me too much.

But I'm seeing sandbagging, blatantly intentional SDs, 2 opponents playing each other's mains instead of their respective characters, low tier dittos, randoms, disregarding the ruleset by playing with banned stages, Miis, sometimes with non-1111 specials despite them being banned in our community, etc. It's really sad and disappointing to me when I've heard some people complain that the game (Smash 4 in this case) isn't "hype" anymore and then they do these things and it's not any more hype than before. In fact, I feel that the lack of competitive spirit exhibited by sandbagging and all of that other shit is a big hype killer. In addition, the fact that people don't take the tournament seriously makes me look bad as a T.O.

What do, r/SmashBros ?

The inevitable Smash Bros Switch title and Sakurai's involvement.

Posted: 11 Jan 2018 10:18 AM PST

Sakurai's design philosophy regarding the Smash series has always been a contentious issue but while many may disagree with the way he thinks about competitive games(Smash in particular), many can appreciate the time, effort and attention to detail he pours into the games. His work ethic is superhuman but he, unfortunately, is not. His health takes a complete nosedive and he turns feral. That said, lets turn our attention to the unannounced next installment of the series.

Given the Switch's success and Nintendo's recent efforts to sell their trapped Wii U games to a larger audience, a Smash Port or new installment is a foregone conclusion. But what exactly would that entail

Will this be a Complete Edition port like many of the others we've seen announced for the Switch these past few months or will it be something completely new? Something in between maybe? What will be Sakurai's involvement?

If we see a straight Complete Smash 4 Port we can assume that Sakurai wouldn't be involved too much if at all. But if they added new characters or changed up some assets (Perhaps Link getting some skins or even a complete model overhaul?). He'd be marginally involved with a straight port unless they added in new assets which I think probably wouldn't impact the game much if at all.

On the other hand, If Smash 5 is announced will Sakurai agree to come on board? He found out Smash 4 was announced when we did and it seemed Nintendo was ready to move with or without him (unless you read it as a muscle move and they were sure he was coming on board). Will he be able to weather another game at his infamous pace or can we expect new blood, like the folks at Bandai Namco, to develop the game while he takes the backseat?

Is it perhaps too early to even expect a new title considering development for Smash 4 ended in late 2016?

What do you guys think?

Genesis 5 Bracket Predictions: Wii U

Posted: 11 Jan 2018 09:33 AM PST

So the projected bracket for Genesis 5 got released today. Here's the projections for top 32:

https://smash.gg/tournament/genesis-5/events/smash-for-wii-u-singles/brackets?filter=%7B%22phaseId%22%3A190491%7D

What are your predictions for who gets into top 8? What about potential upsets? These are mine, provided no upsets happen before top 32 - which is obviously ridiculous, so who knows how many of these matches will even happen. Still, this is my best guess so far:

Cosmos > MKLeo

Mr. R > WaDi

Dabuz > Captain Zack

Larry Lurr > ESAM

Mistake > Salem

Ally > VoiD

Nairo > Samsora

Elegant > Tweek

I predict top 8 winners side will be the following:

Mr. R vs. Dabuz

Nairo vs. Ally

Could Salem come from losers and take the whole tournament? Yes, absolutely. In fact I'd still say he's the favorite to win this tournament. However, I also think Mistake will take a set off him if they meet.

Also: I'm not predicting what top 8 losers side will be like, because I simply am not ballsy enough. This is a heartless metagame with a lot of young blood right now. If I had to guess, I think MKLeo and Salem will be there, and maybe Tweek too.
