TIL I'm a Bad Person

For the past six years, the first thing I've done when visiting Riften in Skyrim is to help Brynjolf frame Brand-Shei with the stolen ring. It doesn't matter if I'm actually joining the Thieves Guild in the playthrough, I just always assumed that this was something that you had to do before you could proceed.

I just found out today that not only can you fail the quest (and still join the Thieves Guild later), but Brand-Shei has a quest of his own to find out about his tragic past. I'd never known about it since he spends the rest of the game in the dungeon after you frame him, but today I decided to talk to him for the first time. 6 years of framing a guy for theft, and I never had the decency to just say hello to him. Sorry Brynjolf, I'm not going to be framing this guy on any future playthroughs.
