Posted: 06 Jan 2018 04:12 PM PST

Silly Question Sunday is a weekly thread in which you can ask your RuneScape-related silly questions:

  • "Newb" questions from new players
  • Questions from returning players
  • Silly or nonsensical questions
  • Questions you feel stupid asking elsewhere

Of course, a question thread wouldn't make much sense without answers, so please help out with any answers that you have!

Loot from Master of All w/ Scavenging 3

Posted: 06 Jan 2018 06:22 PM PST

TL;DR
While pet hunting, I wore Scavenging 3 for 243k kills. I made at least 90m pure profit just from Augmentors and Siphons from free components, and saved a ton on springs. But you might benefit more. My analysis shows you should get it for 120/200m combats or hunting Jack of All Blades. Read on for details...

Overview
I recently finished pet-hunting for my Master of All title (yay me!), and throughout, I wore a Scavenging 3 perk. I couldn't seem to find a detailed analysis or a big trial about it, so I also recorded a bunch of data so I could publish one...
The purpose of this analysis is to see just how profitable or useful Scavenging 3 can be. There are two kinds of benefits: Profit, and cost-savings. Those two are very different: profit is cold cash from the GE, but cost-savings doesn't make you any money, just saves you money if you plan to use those components anyway. In this analysis, we'll be looking at expected profit, and possible cost savings.

The Method, the Data, and Why It's Not Here
I killed about 170k Armoured Zombies and 70k Dark Beasts. I counted approximate AZs by start and end XP between combat pets, and adjusted for how much of that I had an avatar with me. For DBs, this is easy as I can just QC my KC. In either case, it was clearly noted where my equipment with Scav3 on it was level 20, because at level 20 there is 10% more activation chance (3% -> 3.3%). Those kills, then, were counted as 10% more to account for that effect. In the end, 243k is the adjusted kill count.
The data's not here because it's boring. I have all the data; I recorded all my components in a spreadsheet. But the only real thing to take away is that in 243k kills, I received an average of 1,029 of each ordinary component (except Refined. I should note there appears to be a limitation that prevents Scavenging from yielding Refined Components). In fact, my outcome is not as good as you would expect: I received less Powerful and Precious components than I did other less useful components. So my "loot from" result might not be as good as the analysis will show. I also should have only received 1,010 of each component. Perhaps my math is wrong, but no matter; 1,010 will be used for this analysis.
My outcome with rare components will be mentioned at the end, but not as a serious part of this analysis. I did receive an assortment of rares during this time, but only a few useful ones, and my luck won't be yours, and vice-versa.

Pure Profit
The only real way to make profit from Scav3 is via Augmentors and Siphons. But it's important to understand the cost breakdown of each, in order to put a gp value on each component. Normally, I would break each constituent component down by cost using a readily available and efficient method, but since in this case the components are taken for granted, I'll instead focus on the value of each as its contribution to the value of the product, with fixed costs for everything else.

Equipment Siphons @ 210k each:

Component Worth/Cost Method
Simples x50 -11,250 Maple Logs in Auto Disassemblers mk-2
Dextrous x5 19,875 Scavenging 3
Precious x5 19,875 Scavenging 3

Augmentors @ 579k each:

Component Worth/Cost Method
Incandescent Energy x225 -70,650 Grand Exchange
Base Parts x45 -76,500 Royal Bolts
Flexible Parts x45 Free You probably have them. If not, see Tensile Parts...
Tensile Parts x45 -5,715 Magic Shieldbows
Enhancing Components x8 29,500 Scavenging 3
Powerful Components x7 29,500 Scavenging 3

This assumes Dextrous components and Simple Parts as fixed costs to making Siphons. Similarly, every constituent except those gained from Scavenging is considered a fixed cost of making Augmentors. Using this model, the value of each component is merely a split of the remaining value of the relevant product after those costs are accounted for. With this assumption, 243k kills that yield 1,010 of each component should yield:

1,010 Dextrous, Precious, Enhancing, and Powerful components * (19,875 + 19,875 + 29,500 + 29,500) gp = 99.74M pure profit.

Cost Savings
Cost savings do not mean money made, but can save you money in producing useful untradeable items for yourself, provided you planned on spending money on that anyway. The possibilities here are nearly endless, but I'll outline a couple of popular cases where Scavenging might yield cost savings.

Springs
With the Spring Cleaner, greater profit can be made with less effort at Muspahs, Dark Beasts, and more. But anyone who's used a Spring Cleaner knows too well the cost of springs. At nearly 5k each, it's simply not worth it to configure the Spring Cleaner to break down much more than Rune and Dragonstone items. Although hand-making Tight Springs might save some cash, the times it takes makes tradeable springs still the better option.
But with free Subtle components, Tight Springs are nearly free. Tensile parts may be had in abundance from disassembling any kind of bow; hunting Precise 4 Equilibrium 2, for example, will leave you with a lifetime supply. Even if Tensile Parts are not considered free, disassembling Magic Shieldbows with Junk Reduction 9 yields a cost of 127 gp each, or under 1,300 gp per Tight Spring. If Tight Springs are effectively cheap enough, it may become worthwhile to configure the Spring Cleaner to also break down Adamant and Dragonhide items, or Diamond jewelry.
Having personally made some 6000 Tight Springs for free in this time, I saved 6000 * 4,547 gp = up to 27.3M gp on springs.
It's worth mentioning, however, that it's a bit unfair to use this 5k figure as a value for a spring in this case. If they can be so readily made that they're worth using on Adamant items etc., their true value becomes unclear.

Crystal Siphons
The cost breakdown of producing a Crystal siphon is dominated by gathering Crystal Parts. It's difficult to put an exact gp value on that; further analysis would be needed (coming soon!). However, if the cost savings of having free Imbued Components alone is considered, 54k (disassembling Battlestaves with Junk Reduction 9) can be saved per Imbued component--a total cost savings, for my trial, of up to 54.5M!--provided, of course, that I gather Crystal Parts for that. In effect, this enables a limited profit enhancer for the making-crystal-siphons moneymaker.

Swift Components: Fishvention
Fishing can be a great way to train Invention. For producing a Fishing Rod-o-Matic, Swift components make up a majority of the cost. Swift components can cost well over 50k when disassembling Adamant Claws, even with Junk Reduction 9. There's no way I'll ever use over a thousand Swifts, but this is another small cost saving you might consider.

P4E2 Gizmos
Each attempt at obtaining a gizmo with Precise 4 and Equilibrium 2 costs 5 Precise Components and 2 Strong Components. If components are acquired for free, Precise components become the "bottleneck" controlling how many free gizmos you can make. Scavenging still yields 100% free attempts at obtaining P4E2, provided parts for the gizmos are had. For the sake of comparison, if Magic Shieldbows are normally disassembled for Precise Components, with Junk Reduction 9, each Precise component effectively costs 4,257 gp. Strong components are also obtained from this disassembly, and are more than enough in number for the needed weapon gizmo shells, so they are considered free here. So, finally, if 1,010 Precise Components each yield 4,257 gp of cost savings, this results in a net cost savings of 4.3M gp.

Gizmos with Rare/Expensive Components
LUCK DISCLAIMER: My luck is not your luck. Your results WILL vary wildly! My luck seemed spot-on. I received an average of about 7 of each rare in 243k kills. I used a very conservative cost for each based on available cost-saving methods, i.e. levelling Virtus Wands and Books for Zaros components, making Death Lotus darts for Silent, and so on. For serious cost savers, I received the following:

Component Useful For? qty approx. cost/ possible value
Armadyl Precise 5 9 902,125 8,119,125
Bandos Genocidal 12 150,000 1,800,000
Clockwork Tinker 15 468,750 7,031,250
Cywir Planted Feet 3 1,632,000 4,896,000
Dragonfire Furnace, Dragon Slayer 6 77,500 465,000
Faceted Enhanced Devoted 12 78,000 936,000
Fortunate LotD 6 650,000 3,900,000
Ilujankan Aftershock 9 5,020,000 45,180,000
Noxious Biting 3 6 5,000,000 30,000,000
Pestiferous Venomblood 3 5,000,000 15,000,000
Rumbling Equilibrium 15 ? 0
Seren Wise 3, Enlightened 3 12 0
Shadow Caroming 3 1,500,000 4,500,000
Shifting Rapid 6 ? 0
Silent Honed 3 200,000 600,000
Undead Genodical, Undead Slayer 0 729,000 0
Zamorak Impatient, Devoted 15 726,000 10,890,000
Zaros Impatient, Devoted 0 259,000 0
TOTAL 133,317,375

Here it's important to note that these are cost savings should I use these components for gizmo attempts. I probably will see very few of these savings since I already have many of those perks. But it is interesting to see that the possible cost savings may outweigh the profit you expect while using Scavenging.

So should I try to get Scavenging 3?
Scavenging 3 outweighs the benefits of Scavenging 2 not by 50%, but by 125%! Scavenging 3 has a 3% chance of yielding 3 components per kill, versus Scavenging 2 with its 2% chance of yielding 2. That means for every 4 components Scavenging 2 yields, Scavenging 3 yields 9! This results in 125% more components, both uncommon and rare. Over hundreds of thousands of kills, the difference adds up.
But Scav3 is a rare perk. The chance of obtaining it, some say, is 1 in 500. Others say 1 in 1000, and some aren't even that lucky. Your chances are of course affected by your Invention level, up to 120. And at 5 expensive Precious Components per attempt, trying to obtain it can be very costly. Personally, it took me several hundred attempts, though I don't remember the exact number.
Don't get too starry-eyed at the above numbers. In practical terms, with Scavenging 3, each kill only yielded not even 400 gp! That's without considering the cost of divine energy to operate it.
I would say only go for it only if:

  • you're dead set on 120, 200m, or the pet, for your combat skills
  • you have 120 Invention already
  • you are comfortable with sinking 50-100M into it, and maybe not get it

Otherwise, I'd say don't worry about it. If you're going for max combat, or 99/120 slayer, or Champion Scrolls, and you want to try and save on some nicer or even top-shelf perks later, Scavenging 2 is very easy to obtain and pays itself off much sooner. Just use the same method as above with Precious Components (I recommend Diamond Bracelets). You should only have to try a few times.

Flaming Skull keepsake

So I got the flaming skull with the premier club token, and I keepsaked it l assuming that it was like the sunglasses or other novelty items that make a copy so you can change the color while it's keepsaked, but it didn't make any copy and is now stuck on on color. Can this be changed?

I don't see any reason why these capes hang different on the players back. Prayer cape also still sticks out further than other skillcapes.

PSA: If you make ports armor for gp, don't use G.E.

Sorry if this has been posted before but I only just noticed. Any general store buys the helmet pieces for 1.2m making each chi/lac/plate valued at 40k. So unless the chest pieces somehow rise over 3.2m and the legs over 2m, you'll lose money selling those in G.E.
