Why is draft dodging severely punished, but less punished than throwing a game that had a chance of winning? Is it really that bad?

Posted: 13 Jan 2018 09:06 AM PST

So I have always never dodged a draft. I accidentally had my internet go out during draft once, and got a whopping -600 rank points when i reconnected.

Today, when draft started for my first HL game of the day (5th placement match) our draft went south really quick. Instalocks with little communication or complementary picks from anyone else. For the first time, I truly felt like this game had no chance.

This made me wonder - if placement games have so much more volatile rank adjustment, and even for normal matches, why is dodging a draft so harshly punished? If this is a team game, shouldn't it be an okay thing for both teams to be content with, or at least tolerate, with their comps/teammates before committing? In other games, you can carry a team easier by yourself. This game makes your performance heavily influenced by your team's exp. gain etc, so I feel like in some ways allowing draft dodging would create a healthier HL environment. A lot of toxicity is shown in draft, before the game even starts.

As someone who worked really hard last season to climb to plat, and now being matched with gold 3/4 again in placement due to toxic teammates literally refusing to play the game, I am almost afraid to keep doing placements because I know I am committed the moment I enter draft. I would rather queue up again than waste 600 rank points (or more if in placement) or 20 minutes of my life (10 if braxis)

As a side note, isn't recognizing a good draft part of personal performance, which should be reflected by rank/mmr?

Drafting, Drafting... Who to Pick?

Posted: 13 Jan 2018 04:09 AM PST

DISCLAIMER: Remember that ANY team comp CAN win, so don't ever call gg just because you think your team got outdrafted. That said, a proper draft can be a meaningful advantage and will likely make the game more enjoyable for you and your teammates.

Draft Mini-Game

Although HotS is generally referred to as a "casual MOBA" in comparison to its competitors, drafting in HotS is way more difficult than it looks like due to two main factors:

  • Multiple Battlegrounds with different objectives and win conditions
  • Absence of a fixed meta to stick with every game (e.g. top-mid-adc-sup-jungle)

Now, even though this is enough to create a complex draft system that requires a lot of experience and many games to be fully grasped in all its aspects (synergies, counters, map-specific strategies...), it's still possible to indicate some staple points to keep in mind while drafting.

Role System

HotS' role system is rather approximative and doesn't reflect the actual roles that heroes fill in the game (e.g. ranged and melee damage dealers are all classified as "assassins") so, before we move on, here's a more accurate classification: it's not perfect, but it's a good start.

How to Build a Decent Team

(1) Main Tank

A hero who can frontline, protect his team and be disruptive to enemy lines.
Tanks' kits are a combination of CC, self-sustain, damage absorption/reduction, zone control, engage and disengage tools. Tanks are the backbone of any team and can dictate the flow of teamfights.

(2) Main Healer

A hero who can heal (sustain or burst, single-target or AoE), provide armor/buffs, cleanse negative effects and, in general, save people. Most Healers also have CC that allows them to defend their backline, set-up kills and follow-up on teammates' initiations. A Healer is kinda like the Mom of a team: no matter how stupid her family/team can be, she will always be there to help them and fix their mistakes.

(3) Main Range Damage Dealer (RDD)

A hero whose main purposes are: pressure enemy frontliners, provide damage follow-up on engages and poke the enemy team (or objectives/bosses) from a safe distance. These heroes are capable of very high damage (sustained and/or burst), but are usually vulnerable when engaged on. It's possible to indicate 2 subcategories:

  • Marksmen tend to use Auto-Attacks as their main source of sustained DPS, but can also count on abilities for burst, AoE or long-range damage.

  • Casters rely mostly on their abilities to deal damage: on one hand this makes them CD dependent, but on the other hand they gain access to strong burst combos and/or powerful AoE damage.

(4) Second Frontliner

A second fronliner is important in order to reinforce your team and, at the same time, make it more threatening. There are three options to fill this role:

  • 2nd Tank: a second Tank provides even more control during fights and extra beefyness to your frontline.

  • Bruisers: middleground choice between Tanks and Assassins, Bruisers love to be in the middle of the fight where their disruptiveness, combined with incredible survivability, makes them really shine.

  • Assassins: aggressive option for your frontline, these heroes can rapidly get to the enemy backline and be a threat that has to be dealt with asap. However, if something goes wrong, they can be severely punished due to their relative low health pull and/or lack of escape.

(Also note that many Bruisers and Assassins are valuable for laning, jungling and/or ganking purposes).

(5) "Storm Pick"

This pick is the one that makes HotS' draft system really interesting. Ideally, this is the keystone of your comp, the hero that pulls your team together by either covering its weak points or enhancing its strenghts. Every hero can be picked in this slot, but some heroes can only be picked here. Your options are:

  • 2nd Healer: do you remember the "double Healer meta"? Having two Healers, while not as popular as before, is still something you should consider in some situations.

  • 2nd RDD: more damage, more fun. My only suggestion is to not pick two Casters unless you know that the enemy team won't punish you for it.

  • 3rd Frontliner: just don't pick a 3rd Tank (it's overkill) and remember to ban Malthael.

  • Supports: heroes that, while not suitable as Main Healers, can support their team in different ways (shields, buffs, debuffs on enemies, vision, mobility). Some Supports are considered "enablers" that pair very well with specific heroes, others need certain team comps to be effective.

  • Specialists: heroes that, while not always extremely good at fighting, can easily create advantages on the map. Specialists excel at pushing (on their own or with teammates), taking camps, soaking multiple lanes and, last but not least, being annoying.

The Checklist

There are other factors that should be taken into account while drafting a team comp, but these ones are transverse to roles and their importance varies heavily depending on the map and the team you are facing.
The best way to approach this is to ask yourselves "What do we need here?", give your priorities a rough ranking and check if everything is there.

You should repeat this process at the end of the draft so that you have an idea of what your comp can do better than the enemy team and where it might struggle (e.g. "DPS races" on BoE, rotations on DS, waveclear on Tomb...).

Here's some common factors you should put on your lists:
- Waveclear - Laners - Junglers - Gankers - Globals - Zoning
- CC - Follow-up - Poke - DPS - Interrupts - Sustain

Pick Order and Bans

There are no swaps in HL, therefore there is not much to say about pick order other than prioritize heroes who can't be countered easily (e.g. Greymane>Illidan) or that the enemy team might pick/ban.

The first round of Bans is usually based on which heroes are currently perceived as OP or "unfun" to play against; just remember that, if your team picks first, it's usually a good idea to wait for the first player to hover a hero so that you don't accidentally ban it. As for the second round, apply the "checklist" to the enemy team and choose accordingly.

Hope this was helpful to people who often find themselves "confused" during drafts.
Cheers!

Edit:
First, thank you for the feedback.
Second, about Solo-laners not being mentioned, I've already answered in the comments, but let me copy it here:

I've put "Laners" as one of the factors that depend on the map and are transverse to roles: Arthas, Malthael, Alarak, Greymane, Tassadar and Zagara are all heroes who can solo lane, but belong to different classes.
My point is: "Solo Laner" is not a standalone role, especially since it's very match-up based (e.g. Valla is generally not a solo, but wins against Malthael).

BoE first immortal should start East v West.

Posted: 13 Jan 2018 02:28 PM PST

Since the change to BoE with the first immortals always being in the same places the 4 man lane seems to have a huge advantage when it spawns.

Changing it to East vs West to start in defensive positions might encourage a more interesting team fight in the middle and reduce the snowball potential of the map.

So Malfurion got a rework but his facial animations are still missing?

Posted: 13 Jan 2018 02:35 PM PST

Why is this still a thing two years after the official release? All heroes that were lacking facial animations after release such as Valla got animated months ago but Malfurion still does not have any. Why is that? Are there some technical issues or why exactly is he missing them. I could imagine some issues with his beard physics but that's it. Any known reply from a blue one?

Blizzard, I prefer the 10 minutes wait rather than wasting my life on a 250+ ping server

Posted: 13 Jan 2018 11:11 AM PST

It's been worse every patch somehow. I'm playing on the Americas server from SG (who knew this is the best thing to combine 2 regions into one server) and I'm constantly matchmade to play on the Central America Server, which gave me 250+ ping. This is with a premade quickmatch and no there's no wait time at all, like takes 10 seconds to get a game ready.

[Bug] When there are two Lunaras on the same team, they remove each other's poison from enemies.

Posted: 13 Jan 2018 05:03 AM PST

Was playing Brawl and we thought double Lunara would work well. Turns out my Crippling Spores(W) would randomly be unusable, and the little stacks on enemy nameplates would drop instantly, even miliseconds after applying.

Conclusion: The poisons don't stack, and remove your ability to amplify or receive other benefits from it, such as Siphoning Toxin

Got a great idea for a new hero kit

Posted: 13 Jan 2018 03:15 PM PST

Long range poke hero. We'll give him (or her) the same healthpool as Chromie, but with a lot more mobility. He won't have to stand still to cast spells like Chromie either. Also, you know how chromie has that talent that gives her strong auto attacks? Let's just make his auto attacks hit like a bus from the start.

Oooh, I know, we can also take that talent that Chromie has that gives her vision in a large area and make it a baseline ability for this guy. But you know what I don't like about Chromie? The fact that she's got limited PVE. So we'll give this guy talents that can make him a waveclear monster or let him solo camps. And he'll slay immortals really fast too, like Valla.

Maybe he should have a bow, and shoot arrows. So he'll have a slow attack speed but he'll have longer attack range than Raynor or Nova. Because archers shoot long distances, longer than rifles, that seems like something people will accept. But he'll be vulnerable to dive, so we'll give him the ability to jump over terrain any time he wants to escape.

But you know, he doesn't have enough utility, does he? I mean, side from the huge damage and great waveclear. How about a level 7 talent that will lower enemy armor by up to 25 for, I dunno, 4 seconds? But stacking! So you can keep it up until the poor fool runs away or dies. It's like Tyrande's hunter's mark only with near limitless uptime!

We need a Community Tab

Posted: 13 Jan 2018 06:25 PM PST

A place where people can get info in game. There was supposed to be one a long time ago.. https://i.ytimg.com/vi/LkLV1k7bgqE/maxresdefault.jpg

But it was never actually done.

If they do add a community hub, heres some content that could potentially be in it:

  • The latest Patch Notes (opens up the site like when you view GM rankings)
  • Current free hero rotation
  • Latest in development stuff
  • Community content (e.g. yt videos like carbot's, twitch clips)
  • Latest Dev blog posts on certain topics

they could also put esports related stuff on there, however a separate tab for HGC stuff would be way better. Maybe think like a condensed HGC website in the game that shows the schedule, teams/players, and latest articles.

Hello guys,

A few weeks ago I announced a video series showing a new players perspective in Heroes of the Storm. We've now got to the end of our time and thrown out some final thoughts about the game from a new players point of view. You can find the final video here. Do you guys have anything to add to the discussion? Do you feel that our points were valid? Discuss! :)

Bug: Inconsistencies for the announcers still not adressed

Posted: 13 Jan 2018 04:15 PM PST

Hi guys, while the Nazeboo bug is finally patched and we wait for the movement bug on Hanzo to be fixed, lets look back on some minor things that feels a little bit unpolished. We all (hopefully) know, that there are three types of major structures: Forts, Keeps and the Core. When you click on either of the former two you hear "Let us level this fort". When either is killed "Enemie fort down" "Our fort is down" or along those lines. And I know its just a minor thing but it really bothers me that the announcer or heroes dont differentiate between Forts and Keeps. 8 (!!) month ago someone already mentioned it but it got swallowed up in other more important topics. Maybe we get some answer this time before the new Mecha Event starts (hype hype hype).
