Had a 1440 hour ban for "third party software use." Now un-banned, here's my experience with a warning.

Posted: 18 Jan 2018 12:22 PM PST

A couple of days ago I was hit with the "banned for 1440 hours for use of third party software." Now I know I've seen these a lot and, like those, I'm going to claim truthfully that I've never installed or use any sort of mod or hack for this game. I plead for my ticket to be escalated and it was. Without great detail I told that I was banned for "harvesting nodes quicker than what is naturally possible." This is almost laughable as my only means of farming is to harvest a node, hop on my mount, jump to the next node, farm it, rinse and repeat. I do this every day from bitterfrost frontier -> siren's landing -> malchor's leap -> sometimes mount maelstrom. I'm almost flattered that I'm considered as quick, if not quicker, than a bot or program but it doesn't make this situation any less infuriating as now I'll have to consider my actual speed in farming a map in the future. I was un-banned as this was my first offense but it should have never got to this point anyways. Alas, this is more of a warning. If you use mounts to farm be wary of how quickly you do so otherwise you'll get hit with the hammer like I did.

New player - Why I don't like Lion's Arch

Posted: 18 Jan 2018 10:08 AM PST

First off, I'm in love with GW2. I bought it back when it was first released, but my PC couldn't handle it so I put it down. Now, years later, I've picked it back up and I'm enjoying the hell out of it. The QoL changes since launch are fantastic, and from dungeons to fractals to the expansions, there's just so much content.

Despite all the fun content and fantastic lore, there's one thing that bugs the hell out of me: Lion's Arch. I know there are plenty of people who don't like the new LA, so I'm not just going whine about how it's become "Seaworld". Instead, here are the biggest reasons why New LA is bad.

1) It's so empty. Old Lion's Arch was crowded. There were building everywhere and ships built straight into cliff walls. The roads and walkway took you between bustling markets and under huge bridges. Canals ran through the city where boats would moor, and stepping out to travel through one of the asuran gates felt like you were embarking on a journey. The parts of the city that you walked through most often between the bank, crafting areas, and TP, were the parts that felt alive.
New LA is the total opposite. Rather than dropping players into a bustling port city, the vast majority of the area that players frequent in New LA is empty space. The Grand Piazza is huge, but unless there's an event going on, it's just a huge empty field. The walkways between the TP and bank are just filled with trees and bushes, and the crafting area is incredibly empty and pristine for a place where people are constantly hammering steel and sewing fabrics. Basically, all the areas that a player would normally visit just feel... dead. They look pretty on the outside, but there's no bustle, no activity, no life.

2) All the history was destroyed. And no, I'm not just talking about the city. I'm talking about Old Old Lion's Arch. You know, the city from GW1? The place that pirate Lion's Arch was built on top of? Gone. The old lighthouse? Gone. The core foundation of LA as a pirate harbor from Orrian ships, (well, there's a little bit left west of Commodore's Quarter) pretty much entirely gone. Even the little pieces of LA that tie into the personal story like the captains council ship and sewers, gone. Essentially, all the history and lore that made LA a special, unique city has been entirely wiped clean, replaced with whitewashed buildings and pretty plants. I know that LA isn't under threat from Orr anymore, so the grungy old pirate city could afford a bit more luxury in their rebuild, but LA is supposed to be a melting pot. A place where all the races come together and trade. Where's all the culture? Where's all the diversity?

3) Ok, so here's where the "Seaworld" argument comes in. The design. Like I said before, I get that LA is a rich port city and they can spend a bit more on looking nice now that the city is rebuilt, but first and foremost, LA is a port. They make their money off of trade. So why the hell is the TP, arguably the most important location in the entire city, sitting in the middle of fucking nowhere in a fucking conch shell!? The TP should be the centerpiece of a bustling marketplace. They should be surrounded by buildings and storefronts and vendors peddling foreign goods from stalls. Same thing with the bank. Why the hell is the bank, the building that needs to be the most secure location in the city, sitting completely open under a useless fucking octopus sculpture!? The bank should be big. The bank should be sturdy. The bank should be the one-stop shop for anyone looking for coin (yes, that means it should have a guild banker). Old LA did this really well, since the path from the Asuran gates to the north exit ran through the piazza and straight into the trader's forum, which is exactly what you'd expect from a city built on trade. The bank was just across the way from the market, and at the end of the market was the BLTC/TP. All of this would have been available to travelers and sailors who were stopping at the city to trade. New LA should have built on this design, but done away with the temporary boat-buildings of old and established a more permanent, organized city.
Here's just a quick mockup I did of a layout that would make LA into more of a port city and less of an amusement park. The piazza would overlook the water and provide a view of the harbor, and the market would have all the important vendors and house crafting stations in the surrounding stores as well as being home to the Mystic Forge. The bank, TP, and market are all adjacent to the piazza, and the major roadway connect the northern gate, the docks, and the Asuran gates to allow dolyack carts laden with goods to move through the city. Next to the bank would be office buildings, including the new home of the consortium. Fort Marriner could remain largely the same, except those eastern guns need to go away. That is how LA should be designed. As a cultural and commercial hub.

Anyway, this post has become sort of long and ranty, so I'll just wrap up by saying this: I don't like the new Lion's Arch. In a game that usually puts a lot of attention into the lore and design of the characters and races, the new LA comes as a slap in the face. Hell, the walkways use the same texture as the fucking buildings. I know it's not exactly realistic to ask for another new LA, but I'd at least like for there to be a way to go back and visit the old one instead. My big hope is to get a LWS1 remake, but more than anything I just want the old pirate city back. Old LA did it right, and if I can just have that back, I can die a happy man.

Guild Wars 2 on Wine 3.0 (Test request)

Posted: 18 Jan 2018 02:12 PM PST

Hey GNU/Linux users,

Wine 3.0 was released today and I am currently unable to test if GW2 has any performance improvements.

For those unaware, Wine is a compatability layer for GNU/Linux that allows Windows software to run on it. GW2 is able to run on Wine, but usually with a significant loss in performance.

I'm wondering if the new release runs any better; I have doubts but it's worth a shot.

Serpent's Ire Needs A Serious Balance Pass

Posted: 18 Jan 2018 02:28 PM PST

Just attempted this meta for a second time with 20-25 people and we didn't even get remotely close to beating it. The break-bars are far too massive, the downtime after breaking is extremely little and the amount of time to complete the event is even worse. I'm hoping Anet has some sort of statistic for this and sees the overwhelming amount of fail to success ratio. /rant.

What's wrong with current pvp and why you should quit playing it and start relax.

Posted: 18 Jan 2018 12:06 PM PST

This is a big wall of QQ which will probably provide me with an advertention and get deleted. Honestly, i don't generally complain about this kind of stuff and I don't enjoy making hate threads. But I am so very frustrated that i must urburden :) Pardon me. This thread was made in the heat of the moment of total frustration over the state of gw2 PVP.

TOXIC ENVIROMENT

Eveyrone complains that PvP is toxic. BUT WHY? Honestly, I don't think it is a community problem. To me, it is a far worse problem. In all honesty, what happens to PvP is a built up sense of frustration. PvP players are CONSTANTLY stressed out and frustrated because they do not feel safe that the game is "Fair" (It really isn't). You see, everyone, every single person, when they are raging at someone, deep inside, they know they shouldn't be doing that. They know somewhere that they might be wrong and that they are probably not in a spot where they have the right to make anyone feel bad about their gameplay because they also have room to improve. But what makes that thought perish before frustration? It is simple. Time. When that moment of anger happened, it was not the first time they experienced something like that. The first time was probably way back then, close to when they started PvPing in the first place. Back then they didn't rage, because they didn't have this built in sense of frustration inside of them. They didn't know the game wasn't fair, so they could only blame themselves, and they didn't have all those experiences of failure. Nobody rages on other people at their first day playing the game. With time, our brain will think that just because we are stressed over something, it means that we have put in productive work into it and that therefore we understand it and are good at it. That does not reflect reality and that clash leads to frustration. The fact that it keeps repeating itself over and over is what creates one of the culprits for a toxic enviroment: Built up frustration.

LACK OF CARE FROM THE DEVELOPMENT TEAM

The silent threatment Arena Net has been, unjustifiably, providing is also a big culprit here. Why is it the job of the community member to drag more people to PvP? There is very little we can do. "Hey, come check out this very unbalanced game mode, that will make you feel like crap and give you virtually no ingame rewards!". Honestly, do you feel like a costumer of Arena Net when you PvP? Neither do I. They do not give us any explanation over why they make the changes they make and their releasing timing has been awfull when regarding to PvP. Why is there no PvP balance team? PvP is one of the places where balance is the most important ! Assuming that is ok, i bring another argument. Sure, bring us one balance patch every 3 months, i understand that you're understaffed, but at least bring them offseason, where i can actually experiement stuff and feedback and you can make tweaks based on that before the season starts. And explain to us the mentality behind each change. That is IMPORTANT! The lack of balancing professions around Conquest, since that is the only game mode we have, and the constant insecurity that what we think does not make a difference at all completely butchers any players desire to be "nice" to other players. It is a foundation of a toxic enviroment. Because after all, if we were on a fair and balanced scenario, where failures would happen and the only one you'd have to blame is yourself, how would you rage at someone?

In the end, you can look at it in two ways: The player should deal with what is offered to him by Arena Net, completely disregarding his feelings about it (at least it seems that way, considering the silent threatment we receive very oftenly), and try to enjoy the PvP content we have or the player should become bitter and start complaining on the forums just like i am doing right now in a vain hope that it will make a difference or at least get a Dev's response :)

MATCHMAKING AND REWARDS

In a way, the PvE rewards being brought to PvP are a good thing. It brings players that wouldn't PvP to PvP and that is essential on a declining community. Positive income of players. In my opinion, that was a step in the right direction. Now, what lacked was a reason for those players to stay. As I stated on the previous post, I find PvP a stressful and frustrating enviroment (and Matchmaking takes it's part on that, i'll get to that soon), which quickly makes players flee from it.I have been on a fair share of PvE guilds and their most common state of why they don't PvP usually revolves on "I'll simply get destroyed and people will curse me". The way PvP matchmaking is done currently is not friendly for both, the new player and the experienced player ( with the ladder probably being addressed next season).

For the Ranked Queue, two of the problems are match manipulation at high ranks and lack of rewards for personal skill. Considering the pool MMR is given to work with to create matches is much smaller at high ranks, people with contacts and multiple accounts can easily Queue Snipe, Triple Queue or Dodge Queue because of that. The leaderboards dont say The Duo (X+Y) is legendary. The leaderboards say X and Y players are legendary. That can become very troublesome as some people are equally skilled as others who have higher ranks simply because they have an also skilled partner to DuoQ with. I believe ArenaNet's perspective on the issue was something similar to this, viewing as they tried to maintain the DuoQ perspective on the lower ranks, since there isn't much prestige attached to them and it reflects most of the player pool. This issue has been tackled by blocking the DuoQ for Plat2+ at the next season. We'll see how that will turn out. It better work, afterall, it only took them 9 seasons to implement. Beyond that is that the PvP legendary armor has NO EFFECTS associated to it, differently from the WvW and PvE counterparts. NO PRESTIGE AT ALL ! The TAGS do not offer enough prestige as they are temporary and the titles are repetitive. Say if i get top 25 Relentless Legend in one season, if i know i cant get to top 10 the next one, there is no reason to try hard. Another issue associated with rankeds is how hard it is to start playing a new class, because you feel forced to play the class you know best. The way the current system is done is that it looks at the matches you do on your account as a whole, instead of just looking at what profession youre playing. That creates a problem, becasue what if i am a 1800 rating Guardian but I want to start playing Engineer, for example. I cannot do rankeds, until i farm enough unrankeds to be good at the class, which may take a while and will be very punishing, considering unrankeds have virtually no rewards (which i'll QQ about in a minute). And even then, if i am a 1800 rating player, i need to get ready to face 1800 rating players with that class, and those players are really hard to find on unrankeds.

Now for the Unranked Queue (Told you). For the new player, this is no friendly enviroment where they can LEARN to PvP and it is their only option (Please don't mention Hotjoins, that game mode is more dead than Twisted Treeline in League). It has been stated that Unranked Matches do not have an accurate match making, it does not take into account your Skill Rating (from ranked system). So it is basically a mix of really good players, average players (the vast majority) and new players who have no clue. Usually the really good player will not get upset for losing an unranked match, because he is secure of his personal skill, but that is not true for the average player. It is very common for those players to turn toxic because they need the win to assure themselves that they are capable. It just isn't fun for anyone. The good player will not find a challenge, the average player will get frustrated and the new player will just flee from PvP and never comeback. Another thing: There are no IMMEDIATE REWARDS. Sure, you can play unrankeds to improve skill and then get better rewards at ranked but that isn't enough to make a player want to queue unranked. I believe rewards from unranked should be increased or ,better, have the chest pip tracks associated to it (without the Ascended Shards or an entirely new pip track specifically made for unranked) to make the player WANT to pvp for the gold aswell.

BALANCE TEAM AND STATE OF THE GAME I don't really want to get into that. There is no point. There are several threads on the PvP forum that reflect that the community isn't happy.

Budget Viper's Gear Setup

Posted: 18 Jan 2018 09:47 AM PST

Hello everyone. I was wondering if anyone had put together a budget viper's gear setup for the different meta builds. Spending the money on exotic Viper's gear does not seem worth it since you cannot swap it around between characters and it is quite expensive (~10g per item). I was thinking of what a budget viper setup might be to get started with raiding/fractals if you wanted to run condi. As an example I threw together a budget Firebrand build. For the actual build I swapped out the ascended weapons/armor for exotic because budget. You can use ascended weapons if you would like and the comparison still holds. The only non budget parts of the build are the sigils. I also used Ascended Trinkets because those should be easy enough to get for everyone.

Let me know what you think and if you have some tips to improve the budget build(s) further or submit you own for the other condi builds: Warrior, Necro, etc.

Firebrand build from Snow Crows (no food/utility) (~80g):

Budget build (Viper's Weapons w/ Some Sinister Armor) (~40g):

Carrion Armor Pieces:

Budget build (No Viper's Weapons w/ Some Sinister) (~21g):

Weapons:

Axe: https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Jaws_of_Death

Scepter: https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Zhaitan%27s_Reach

Torch: https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Beacon_of_Kryta

FYI: I didn't include the cost of the sigils in the prices mentioned above. The first budget build, I know, is not extremely cheap but if you sacrifice some damage by replacing the Viper's weapons with Rampager or Carrion (last build above) you can save about 19g bringing the cost down to 21g which isn't bad.

Also, if you have a Berserker you can use the helmet from that because it has Sinister stats and save about 5g that way.

EDIT: I chose Firebrand because it's the condi build with the most limited set of conditions. Most others have poison, bleeding, chill, torment etc. but Firebrand is mainly just burning with some vulnerability. What this means is you can use things that increase burning duration only and achieve good results as opposed to relying on condition duration (expertise). What this also means is you can use Balthazar runes instead of using trapper/nightmare runes to get good burning duration.

EDIT 2: As mentioned by some others, you can use Rabid gear instead of Carrion as long as higher toughness isn't an issue. Precision scales better with condi builds compared to power. You can even swap some of the sinister pieces out for rabid/carrion but I wouldn't go too crazy gutting power because, while it doesn't scale the best for condi builds, it does still add some to damage.

Joining your awesome community

Posted: 18 Jan 2018 05:38 AM PST

My girlfriend and I are joining your beautiful community today. I used to play back at release but apparently I had put an authenticator on my account. Contacted Arenanet yesterday but no answer yet so I'll most likely just make a new account hah.

I'm basically looking for some nice and helpful tips, I've read the "Returning Player" stuff but it's always different when hearing it from actual players. Also looking for tips for server choices or anything really. Just want to say hi? Also perfectly welcome!

We'll just be playing the base game for quite some time as there is no way I can afford any of expansions, although the mounts look awesome, not sure if that's a major downside similarly to how you'd miss out on a lot when not buying WoW's expansions.
