Modern video games and their teensy tiny text size.

Posted: 20 Jan 2018 11:58 AM PST

Their uncustomizable, minuscule text size. A giant tv, a giant screen, all that space, all that empty space, just wasted. They shove the writing into a tiny little part of the screen and the rest is just blank space. Who does that? I mean honestly. How is this something only I've ever complained about. Even if you sit just an inch away from the tv screen or monitor screen there's no way this doesn't at least grate you a little.

Posting the images here doesn't really show the true impact of such tiny font size because seeing them on a computer screen that's right in front of your face is much different from a tv screen that's a few meters away from the couch, which is my setup at least.

The worst part is they recognize the font is small because you'll notice they put the credits in comparably larger, much larger font. ffff

I can barely see that says interrogate from where I sit. Why even bother putting that text at all?

Why couldn't the entire game have font that large?

Look at all that empty space.

There are no words to describe this

I want to read bios about weapons and characters but they don't make it larger for those that want it.

The menu categories on the left are nice and large right? Yet the writing under "Jowai Resort" for objectives is so tiny by comparison? What is this a text for ants?

"Gadgets" and the name of the gadgets themselves are in a relatively acceptable size, but why can't the description on the right be at least as large as the actual weapon name on the left.

Unith 2018 release cycle will focus on performance, such as multithreading Unity API and scalable rendering pipeline. Unity 2018.1 beta is now released.

Posted: 21 Jan 2018 07:56 AM PST

So last year Unity switched over to the yearly version cycle with Unity 2017, however 2017 was mostly focused on the art side of things with /some/ performance improvements. However with Unity 2018.1 coming out really soon (beta out now) there are A LOT of graphical and performance improvements coming with it

Scriptable Rendering Pipeline : This will FINALLY give devs control over the rendering pipeline for Unity, allowing a lot more graphical features to either be added or removed completely, this is a pretty big one for visuals and they are launching it with a "lightweight" and "HD" render pipeline for everyone to use.

Examples -

Multi-threaded Unity API calls / New Job System (Also new compiler): So this is the big one for performance, as everyone knows...Unity doesn't exactly work too hot on consoles due to the reliance on single core performance (consoles have bad single core performance), these changes however will FINALLY allow devs to move Unity API calls off the main thread which if done right should improve performance A LOT on most machines. This is also being added with a new compiler which /should/ make the C# code (now the default coding language for Unity) run closer to how C++ code would run.

I am mostly posting this because I know it's not the job of the average person to really keep up to date on this kinda thing, but I do feel like it is important to know where these engines are going and this is going to be a big one for Unity.

Blog Post

https://blogs.unity3d.com/2018/01/18/2018-and-graphics/

I predict there will be quite a few shifts for developers to gear towards Unity because of said 2018 release cycles and their emphasis on performance upgrades, like how Telltales Games are moving towards Unity.
