I finally understand how people who didn't like the Witcher 3 felt

Posted: 09 Jan 2018 03:38 PM PST

So a bit of backstory - huge Witcher fan. I loved the first 2 games, and the 3rd is definitely my favorite game of all time. Does it have problems? Absolutely. But I've sunk a huge amount of time into it, and I love it.

This year, we get Breath of the Wild. I didn't get a Switch until a few months ago, and BotW was the second game that I got for it, and honestly, I didn't care for it much. I don't hate the game by any means, I think it's incredibly well made and I completely understand why so many people got sucked in by it. I gave it about 15 hours, but it just never really grabbed me.

Once the GOTY lists started coming out, of course it's sitting at the top of almost every one. I'm really happy that it's winning so many awards, but at the same time it feels like some lists are including it because they feel like they "have" to. They'll get the "What, you didn't include BotW?!?!" response if they don't. It gets to the point where you get a bit tired of hearing about the game.

It's at this point where I finally understand how so many people felt about Witcher 3 once it was released. Whenever I saw/heard someone say that they didn't care for the game, I was of course there defending it and essentially telling them that they're wrong. But now, it finally clicked that there really are just different games for different people. Everyone enjoys something different, and just because somebody else enjoys something, it doesn't mean that you have to. I just thought it was a really interesting parallel and wanted to share with everyone!

Shadowbane Emulator MMO - Relaunch & Update

Posted: 09 Jan 2018 07:53 PM PST

Also posted in gaming.

Hey all,

Wanted to post this in here as the Shadowbane Emulator project is having great success in the relaunch of the game and want to spread the word!

Shadowbane was a full open pvp MMORPG from 2003 with a steadfast loyal community who has kept 2 emulators going since servers closed years ago. It's a political, city-building/sieging and territory claiming game with probably the most in depth endgame of any MMO, requiring holding of mines and resources, inventory looting, taxing realms, and sieging opponents as well as upkeep of city and merchants (using said resources to roll gear for pvp), with an insanely detailed character creation scheme. The learning curve is relentless, the community is cruel, and the only time new players stand any chance is at a server wipe. We have multiple nations openly recruiting guild members to show them the ropes!

The game's a blast if you'll learn it.

A new server launched last weekend flawlessly (really, first time without lag spikes probably ever, live included). There was some rubber banding issue on newb island with run buff differences between client and server, but fix is incoming and it's minor. Server pop has sat stable around 500ish any given time at the end of the weekend, hoping to push 800 at peak, which is plenty with the smaller map set the devs have created.
