ELEAGUE Major Boston 2018: the very first Major of 2018 and the 12th iteration of the Valve funded CS:GO Major tournaments is right around the corner and as fans, we can participate in the Major HYPE by playing a mini game on the game client itself. The game is called Team Pick'Em.

Introduction

Stickers

You will need team stickers to play this game. They can either be the regular stickers, a holo or a foil sticker. You can obtain stickers from the in-game client offers section. This time there is no fantasy Team Game, however you can buy the player signature sticker packs for each team or a foil pack for the different types of teams (legends, challengers etc.). Once you buy the pack and unpack it, a random player signature will be given to your inventory. You can directly buy a particular team's or player's sticker from the steam community market.

Alternatively, when you try to make a pick for a team, the game will pop up a buy menu from where you can buy the stickers in game or from the market. Once you apply the sticker, it is locked until the end of the Phase you picked it for, but it is not destroyed once you use it or even if that team didn't make it. The sticker will be available in your inventory to use again for the next Phases of the Major or to apply to a gun later on. 50% of the proceeds from the stickers go to the players and organizations.

Similar to last time, team graffiti sprays are available. You can show off your fandom by using your favorite team spray in game! However, please note that the player signatures and the graffiti are not required to play Team Pick'Em.

External Websites and Apps to play Team Pick'Em

Valve has opened up an API that helps in creating external tools that help you to make picks in case you do not have access to the game client itself. If you are on a vacation, at work, traveling or at the major itself, you don't need to open the game to make the choices. Here is an option that has been presented to the subreddit in the past.

There might be other websites and apps out there as well!

How to play Team Pick'Em

The objective for playing Team Pick'Em is to predict which teams will go through the Preliminary Stage (previously Major Qualifier), Group Stage and how the playoff bracket will play out according to you. By picking correct teams before each phase, you will earn points that add up at the end of games for that phase. This time, there are 3 time slots allotted to make picks, once before the Preliminary Stage (Jan 12), once before the Group Stage (Jan 19), and once before the playoffs (Jan 26).

Preliminary and Group Stages' worth of choices are to be made before each Stage begins and similarly choices for who you think will win the quarters, semis and finals should be made before the quarter-finals begin on January 26 - these choices will count for the duration of the playoff bracket. Yes, you have to guess who wins the quarterfinals and according to your selected teams, pick who will win the semis and who wins the finals. Pretty difficult to get gold this time as well, right?!

Preliminary and Group Stage Picks (example)

  • Pick one of the 2 teams you think will go undefeated during the Stage with a 3-0 record.
  • Pick one of the 2 teams you think will be eliminated without winning a game during the Stage with a 0-3 record.
  • Pick 7 other teams you think will go through to the playoffs during the group stage.

These are 2 seperate Phases that work the same way - Preliminary Stage has to be picked before January 12th, and the Group Stage has to be picked after the Preliminary ends and the actual Group Stage begins (January 19th)!

Preliminary Stage picks are worth 1 point per correct team, and Group Stage picks are worth 3 points, which count toward the final goal of earning a trophy.

Playoffs Stage Picks (example)

  • Pick the winners of 4 quarterfinal games, each correct pick is worth 12 points
  • Pick the winners from the 2 semifinal games, each correct pick is worth 10 points
  • Pick the winner of the final, the correct pick is worth 7 points.

Once again a reminder, you will only get one chance to pick how the playoff bracket will play out. You can start building your bracket as soon as the group stage is over, and you'll have until January 26th to make adjustments. Once the playoffs start, brackets are locked, so make sure your bracket is ready! Yes, you won't know who qualified for the semis or the finals but you have to guess who will proceed with your acute sense of analysis ;)

There are a total of 111 points that you can earn in these 3 Phases, 36 points for the Preliminary and Group Stages and 75 for the Playoffs Stage. At the end of the major you will earn a bronze, silver or a gold Team Pick'Em Trophy, if you score 25, 50 and 75 points and above respectively.

Some concluding Notes

Now that you know how to play these games and how the scoring system works, you can discuss what would be wise choices for these 9 teams! Here is the blog post by Valve regarding the game. There is also an FAQ section at the bottom. Please feel free to discuss your analysis and thoughts in this thread. if you are not sure who to choose, feel free to ask for suggestions here!

This thread will be updated with a link to the schedule thread in some time.

Good luck, have fun!
