The reason the Pistol from Halo 1 is so powerful.

Posted: 15 Dec 2017 07:37 PM PST

So I'm playing through the Halos like I do every year, Halo 1 in particular. I'm looking at all the little details, looking for new small tid bits here and there (I swear I find something new every playthrough, and I've been playing this since it came out). Any way, I'm looking at the Assault rifles ammo pack and I see it says 7.62x51, which is a .308 round, basically a sniper round. I thought this was interesting, so then I looked at the Magnums ammo pack. 12.7 x 40. It all makes sense now. That's a huge fucking round! To put that in perspective, a Desert Eagle takes a .50AE, which is 12.7 x 33. This has more in common with a rifle round called .50 Beowolf, 12.7 x 42. This may be old news to some, or nothing of importance to others, but I thought that was really interesting since I'm somewhat of a gun nut.

Edit: it also specifies that the .308 is FMJ armor piercing and the Magnums are hollow points, which is also cool.

Surprised by the size of the Halo community

Posted: 15 Dec 2017 08:20 PM PST

So I used to play halo back in middle school which was around the time halo reach came out. I never experienced true peak levels of Halo, but the series was pretty fresh on everyone's minds back around 2010.

Now, one would have me believe that the Halo community is pretty dead from the lackluster success of the recent games. However, I was really taken aback by the vibrant halo community on Youtube where multiple exclusive halo channels had 100k + subscribers and had really active viewerships. And these channels were focused around the game rather than the commentator itself (different than a cod commentator).

Tbh, I really don't think any other first person shooter has such a passionate fanbase right now that cares for the story and lore for the game itself. Maybe fallout but that's an rpg and many fans of that series are really Besthesda fans rather than for fallout. It's not like the halo community love Bungie because a lot of us really dislike Destiny.

Anyways, I just wanna say with all this activity and interest still present in the halo community, it really gives me hope for the future of the Halo not only in its video games, but other forms of media such as TV and even a feature film!

Favorite Sound effects from Halo?

To me there is nothing more satisfying that the headshot sound from H5 and the way the default announcer says PURRFECT. Of course nothing can replace the Grunt Birthday skull sound.

Playing through Halo Reachs campaign this weekend and the New Alexandria civilian subtitles got me thinking

Posted: 15 Dec 2017 10:11 PM PST

As a lot of us know there are "hidden" subtitles at the end of New Alexandria right after Kats death with the whole "close the door hide please don't kill me" thing, but at the end of the subtitles there's a less panicked "shh I'm here it's ok" and that had me thinking, Spartan IIIs are vengeful orphans recruited by the UNSC, and these subtitles are likely family of Kats hiding here in somewhere like a closet or something hence the "quickly close the door" line, followed by the civilian begging for his life before the "shh it's ok" line and I think that last line is UNSC personnel "discovering" Kat before here recruitment

Lets talk about Vehicles

Posted: 15 Dec 2017 06:51 PM PST

I was playing Halo 3 with my friend on split-screen, and we drove head-on into each other. The outcome blew my mind, he was on a mongoose, and I was in a warthog. The warthog decimated his mongoose.

The warthog felt like an actual threat; it was hard to shoot him off the gun. The warthog was huge in comparison to your character; bullets ricochet off the armor. The Halo 3 warthog was SCARY.

In Halo 5, its a nuisance and used more for distracting. The armor didn't fall off super easy either, and it was hard to jump over. We NEED to bring this back; the scorpion is another example. Its far too weak; it needs increased health.

Get rid of pre-rendered animations for damaged vehicles. Little bits of shit falling off that doesn't correlate with the situation. In Halo 2, the tips of the Wraith's wings would drop off if shot. The cap didn't fall off if you shot at its haul.

Increased player mobility has created inferior vehicles.

However, I feel that air vehicles have good balance. But the limited skybox provided a feeling of being caged.

Air-to-air dogfights felt lacking though. Banshees circle each other, Wasps just float up and down, Phaetons thrust out of the way. Against each other, unless you got the jump on someone, felt like Phaeton>Banshee>Wasp.

Imagine the falcon with seat switching? You could jump back and forth from each gun.

I would love to see the Spectre, Falcon, Hornet, Chopper, Elephant, Troop-Hog, and Civilian Vehicles like in Reach and ODST make a return.

If 343 wants to take another step, I'd especially love to see the Elephant, Pelican, Phantom, and Spirit as pilotable vehicles in the game, let alone spawnable in Forge. If they wanted to go for overkill, Mammoth, and Scarab.

It would be awesome if they were mobile bases. Instead of treating them like vehicles, they could pilotable bases. The Scarab and Mammoth could have an option of being indestructible. Free-roam or pilotable. Manable, as in being able to use their guns.

Someone just recently posted a video of the comparison between Halo 5's Phantom exploding vs. Reach's, and its a remarkable difference. There should be an option about whether destroyed vehicles remain destroyed and don't despawn or do despawn. For example, in the campaign, it would be more realistic for that phantom to crash down and stay on the map rather than despawning. Having the option for rubble in multiplayer would open up immersion factors. The immersion will improve in some game types while others will have issues.

I'm excited; if 343 does nothing else, I hope vehicles become threatening again.

I forgot to add something about the Grunt Jockey and Mantis. The Grunt Jockey should be pilotable somehow; maybe the Spartans look squished in the cockpit for the comedic humor. It would align with the Grunt Jockey. The Mantis felt the most balanced and scary. It wasn't a bullet sponge but wasn't weak either. It had good mobility to combat Spartans, and the crouch option added a whole other dynamic of movement even if not practical. Stomping felt impractical because it missed most times and made it easy to be hijacked.

A Short Recap of MLG's History in Halo, as Well as My Early Thoughts

Former Halo Pro Neighbor announces end of employment at 343 Industries via Twitter. Uses hashtag: #ClassicHaloFan

Signs point to: We're getting yet another Reach multiplayer successor for Halo 6.

Maybe we have to wait 10 more years and face even more steady decline in population, population retention, and relevancy before classic Halo re-enters the scene, likely to be too late anyway.

Halo MCC Broken after XBox One Update / Cannot match with anyone

Posted: 15 Dec 2017 07:12 PM PST

I've tried EVERYTHING possible: uninstall/reinstall, clear saved data, matchup with someone in another game and then fire up Halo. What gives? Is this game now broken again since the recent Live Update?
