Doki Doki Literature Club! - 2017 Game Discussions

Name: Doki Doki Literature Club!

Platform(s): Mac, Linux, PC

Genre: Visual Novel

Release date: September 22, 2017

Developer: Team Salvato

Trailer/Review Scores/Discussion

Doki Doki Literature Club! is a visual novel developed by Team Salvato. It was released on September 22, 2017 for Microsoft Windows, macOS, and Linux, and later on October 6 for Steam. The story follows a male high school student who joins the school's Literature Club and interacts with its four female members. The game features a mostly linear story, with some alternate scenes and endings depending on the choices the player makes. While it appears at first glance to be a lighthearted game, it is in fact a psychological horror game that involves heavy use of breaking the fourth wall.

The game was developed in an estimated two-year period by a team led by Dan Salvato, known previously for his modding work for Super Smash Bros. According to Salvato, the inspiration for the game came from his mixed feelings toward anime, and a fascination for surreal and unsettling experiences. Upon its release, Doki Doki Literature Club! received critical praise for its metafictional and horror elements, with PC Gamer calling it "one of the most surprising games of the year."

Statistics for Steam games released between 2017/11/27 to 2017/12/03

Posted: 17 Dec 2017 09:44 PM PST

Hello there!

Here's some data I've put together for all the Steam releases between the end of November to the start of December this year: https://imgur.com/gdlNUe4

Whilst this week saw an incredible number of releases, the most in about a month or so, that didn't translate into a bigger week overall. Injustice 2 took out the top spot but not by a whole lot although sifting through my data shows that it was actually released 2 weeks prior to its "release date" on Steam. This is also after it's been out on consoles since May so the PC market was never going to be that large anyway but its real release week numbers are about twice what this infographic shows.

Couple interesting things going on in the trending section. Ice Lakes was a bit of a surprise entrant, managing to get in based off its Chinese localisation, something which has proven to be a big attraction given the growing PC gaming market in China. Hand Simulator also makes a show due a content update that's been making the rounds with various YouTubers and subsequent updates have only added to its following.

Keen to hear your thoughts on this week's games, the data I'm presenting or any general feedback you might have!
