Theorycraft Thursday - Discuss Builds, Skills, Strategies, and More!

Posted: 14 Dec 2017 01:00 AM PST

Welcome to Theorycraft Thursday, a community-building, regularly occurring thread in the subreddit!

MMO veterans will know that Theorycrafting is the core of many discussions about this genre of games, and ESO is no different.

With the high level of variance in builds, skills, and stats, there's plenty of room for Theorycrafting, and we want to see what you have to share with the community on that front.

Have a build you've experimented with? A particular skill or set of skills that synergize well? A strategy for PvE or PvP that works to great effect? Share it here!

If you're new, you can also use this thread to ask questions about viable builds and skills as well!

As always, please keep in mind our rules on the sidebar, especially the one about 'no personal attacks, callouts, rude behavior, or other such disrespectful content'.

Disagree respectfully and know that everyone has different ideas and playstyles that suit them.

Hey ZOS, where's my Bot Wrangler title?

A pack of feral bots has been terrorizing the local Black Marsh fauna recently, wreaking havoc on the fragile ecosystem south of Alten Corimont. As we all know, this invasive species - likely hailing from the distant lands of Azeroth - is a blight upon our lands and a plague upon our economy.

However, hope is not lost!

After many days and nights observing their insatiable routine of devastation, a pattern emerged, a scheme was hatched, and a plot to save this fetid swamp devised. For you see, these vile bots have a natural predator in the glorious wamasu, and go to great lengths to avoid any encounter with this marvelous native beast of Argonia. My plan, then, was simple: lure a wamasu into the roving horde of ravenous... devourers.

And it worked! Turns out that if the wamasu directly southeast of Alten Corimont finishes off a bot, they respawn at the Alten Corimont Wayshrine and proceed to immediately become stuck on the hill leading up to the Xal Thak world boss.

Also Masarha the chef is complacent in their crimes by guilt of purchasing all of their poached goods. Shun her.

TL;DR: led wamasu into bots, causing them to get stuck.

So quick little catchup. Im a fairly new player, (3 weeks) testing different playstyles and class types, before ESO played WoW for years as a mythic raid tank. Got tired of the grind and competition so i gave it up and have been playing other games quite casually.

Today im leveling a DK Stam build, still early gameplay and i que into a dungeon with a friend just to try my hand at tanking for the first time on ESO. So right away i haul ass cause low level dungeons are easy and i wanted to attempt to challenge myself.

Im pulling every group and boss as quickly as i can and the group is handling it no problem, but i notice the other DPS is pulling aggro and his weapons are a sword and shield. So i quietly start bitching to my buddy about how even though it hardly matters what weapons hes using at this point we should all be doing our own jobs.

So about 3/4 of the way through the dungeon im holding aggro on a boss and this DPS keeps pulling off me. I start getting aggravated and i almost say something...until i open up my group tab and realize im the asshole that qued as a DPS and has totally been tearing through this dungeon while the poor tank attempts to keep up and do his job.

Apologies were said and we all laughed about it after, but ill definitely pay more attention next time. Its not that often i make an ass of myself. Im just glad i was smart enough to keep my mouth shut and realize the error of my ways.

Hope someone gets a good laugh out of this, i know ive been kicking myself since it happened. Thanks for reading!

Guard Resistances in Pvp (CP vs No-CP)

Posted: 14 Dec 2017 12:32 AM PST

Hello all,

First off, yes I am a loser who has nothing better to do than test the resistances of guards across different campaigns. But I think the results are pretty cool, so here you go.

I tested three types of guards in Sotha Sil and Vivec to see their different resistances, the main goal was to see if there actually was any difference. Also, I was bored and I thought it would be fun.

Method: To test the resistances I used the Two-Handed Ultimate (Beserker -unmorphed I don't know if that matters, don't know what the morphs are). The skill basically will ignore all the resistances that are on an enemy and grant you their resistances for 8 seconds. So given my base resistances for physical and spell I would only use the ultimate and then run away from the guards to try and avoid any extra resistances. Then I would look at Combat Metrics to find out what my maximum resistances were, then subtract that amount with the base amount of resistances that I have. Therefore, I would get their numbers.

Lastly, I made sure that the guards I used the ultimate on were at least at a Level 1 keep, so that the results would be consistent. Farm Level 1 and Mine Level 1 increase the guards resistances. I'm unsure about Mine Level 1, because it just says "Armour Increased for Guards", so it's a maybe, but whatever, did it for both campaign tests.

Results:

Guard #1: Just the normal guard, their titles are Dominion Guard, Pact Guard, Covenant Guard No-CP: Health: 80k Physical Resistance: 9100 Spell Resistance: 18200 CP: Health: 90k Physical Resistance: 9760 Spell Resistance: 20680

Summary: There is a 660 difference for the Physical and 2480 difference for Spell.

Guard #2: Flag Mender Guard No-CP: Health: 48k Physical Resistance: 0 Spell Resistance: 10647 CP: Health: 52k Physical Resistance: 660 Spell Resistance: 12371

Summary: There is a 660 difference in Physical and 1724 difference for Spell.

Guard #3: Flag Honor Guard No-CP: Health: 48k Physical Resistance: 9100 Spell Resistance: 20020 CP: Health: 52k Physical Resistance: 9760 Spell Resistance: 22682

Summary: There is a 660 difference in Physical and 2662 difference for Spell.

What do you do with this information? I don't know, just be a physical damage dealer, looks like you can farm resources easier that way.

Also, on a side note, I did testing in PvE as well, almost everything has a resistance of 9100 for both Physical and Spell. That includes World bosses, snakes, scorpions, normal friendly NPCs, hostile monsters, ghosts, kagouti. The only thing that didn't was Town Guards, those dudes have like 10.2mil health and have 15040 resistance. I also have recorded video tests of each of these attempts to test the resistances if you don't believe me. I can snip them all together and make them into a video, but I thought it would be better if I just made a text post summarizing all the results. Thanks for reading this far.

tl;dr: Champion Point Campaign's guards, as expected and should be, have more resistances than no-CP campaigns.

[PC] Tried to buy this game...Did I just get scammed, or am I an idiot?

Posted: 13 Dec 2017 06:58 PM PST

Hi,

I just bought a code for ESO Tamriel Unlimited and when I redeemed it online, there was no option to download the game anywhere that I can find.

Am I just stupid, or did I get scammed? Do you not actually get the game with a purchase of Tamriel Unlimited? Any help would be hugely appreciated, I am feeling pretty silly right now.

EDIT: Thank you so much to everyone for taking the time to try and help me out, I can tell already that this is an amazing community of people. An extra huge thanks to aiden_33 for actually sending me a Steam code for the game, AND a code for 15 days of ESO+ and more!!

What are your ESO chores?

Posted: 13 Dec 2017 07:56 PM PST

For me, it's doing my alchemy and enchanting surveys. It's helpful to do. But damn it's annoying to do.

What are your in-game chores that you feel compelled to eventually do?

Is it at all possible to disable the bounty element of the HUD?

Posted: 14 Dec 2017 01:55 AM PST

I found some cool addons that I'd like to place in the bottom right hand corner, but when my thief gets a bounty the vanilla bounty element appears and looks a little weird. I can't find it in the options menu, is there any ini edit or addon that would help me disable this?

Tamriel Unlimited vs ESO Gold vs Morrowind (PS4)

Posted: 14 Dec 2017 01:38 AM PST

Hi Guys,

I'm looking to pick up ESO on the PS4 in the next week and am curious about which version I should buy to get the best value?

I'm in no real rush to get through everything, will probably only play 5-10 hours a week. I think I will sub to ESO+ though, so I think this removes the need for the Gold version?

I think Morrwind includes the base game, is that right?

Any help appreciated!

Who else has been duped by this stupid chest...

Posted: 13 Dec 2017 04:37 AM PST

So, XP event but maxed out character folks, what are you going to do?

Posted: 14 Dec 2017 04:21 AM PST

So the life festival is about to start, but what are you all going to do if you have max characters. I have all classes to 50 (save templar as it's "not my thing") and getting very close to max CP. Considering making a stam alt DK (main is magicka) just "because" during the event, but what else to do? Although stamplar may be interesting and this is a good excuse to try it out.

Tanky DPS

Posted: 14 Dec 2017 04:04 AM PST

I'm always scared when doing random normal dungeons as tank If DPS is low, and it's something like City of Ash 2 or Cradle of Shadows, it takes hours to complete it

So I tried to use my PvP gear on my templar (Medium Armor Master + Ravaging + Pirate Skeleton), put taunt and vMA Bow and it works so well. I fell in love. I can provide 12k DPS while also easily tank any normal dungeon or the easy veteran dungeons like Fungal Grotto 1

Now I'd like to do the same on my DK Tank. This time I wanted to try Magicka.

Something like:

  • Monster Set
  • Set1 (3 body heavy + 1h/s)
  • Set2 (3 rings + 2 body)
  • vMA Fire Staff (since I don't want to farm another lighting staff)

What do you suggest for sets? Thanks

Why do popular youtubers recommend Recovery Glyphs over Cost Reduction Glyphs?

Posted: 13 Dec 2017 11:55 PM PST

Like it's 169 Recovery every 2 seconds compared to 203 Cost Reduction per cast which would be 406 every 2 seconds. Even with CP and passives, I can't see where Recovery is better can someone explain?

Some questions as a newbie

Posted: 13 Dec 2017 11:49 PM PST

Hi, I just started seriously playing this game after briefly trying from Humble MOnthly. Now I'm kinda hooked. The game has a very nice system and community and I figured a lot out in the last 3 days, but there are still things I'm unsure.

  1. Differences between low and high levels. I've seen a lot of level hundreds roaming around starting maps such as Stonefalls and . They are helping me and other newbs and I think it's wonderful. But after some World Bosses and Group Dungeons with them, I have the feeling that they're not too different from me in terms of raw strength and sustain. Like, a Templar at level 500 is having the same HP as me (level 21). 19k. I'm sure he has more and better skills and other things, but it's vastly different than my experiences with old MMORPGs. As higher levels tend to be so strong that made me look like an ant. Can anyone explain to me on this?

  2. I'm having ESO+ but couldn't choose Imperial. Does it mean I have to buy the Imperial DLC for it? Do the other DLC packs have similar problem? I might just get the Mega Pack and use ESO for craft bag.

  3. Will the Crown be on Steam Sale, or any sale, ever? Just assumptions would be nice.

  4. Is there anyway to preview the armor I'll be crafting ingame? I'm a Nord, just got some motif but short on materials. I'd like to take a look on the style first.

  5. Does ESO have an ingame voice chat?

  6. I've heard of "grinding" in ESO, and had gotten quite some exp scroll. But where should I grind (level 20)? The first 3 maps basically showed me that ESO is more of a quest game. Mobs are around bit not in the quantity that we usually "grind".

Thank you very much.

More questions from a newbie.

Posted: 14 Dec 2017 03:18 AM PST

Hey there gang,
I picked the game up the other day and I had a blast during the free weekend and just had a few questions.

  1. How much of this game is dedicated to the main quest, in comparison to the entire game?
For example, I'm around level 18, and I'm about to start the assault on Coldharbour to take on Molag Bal after he busted Mannimarco for trying to double cross him.
How much of the main questline do I have left?
I only ask this because it sounds like the story is wrapping up, but I've only explored about 2% of the whole map.
After the story do I walk around exploring and doing dungeons for the rest of the time? Or am I supposed to make a different faction character to explore the rest of the map?

  2. What are Dolmens and how do they work?

  3. As a solo player, how much of the game am I missing out by not playing dungeons?
It's not that I don't enjoy playing with people, it's mainly because as an Australian, there are rarely people on at the same time as me, so queue times take a ridiculous amount of time to pop.

  4. What is the difference between character level and champion level?

Thanks in advance!
