The "DotA is dying mentality". Posted: 06 Dec 2017 11:31 PM PST The DotA 2 playerbase today is 20% smaller than when it peaked in 2016. Hearthstone players: "our game is pay to win, there's no players, the new cards are OP and I can't play" PUBG players: "our game is developed by assholes and it's fucking terrible and runs like ass, Fortnite is gonna kill us" CS:GO players: "Our game is stuck on Source 1 engine, Valve gives us no support, the pro scene is full of cheaters and the anti-cheat in matchmaking doesn't do shit" Starcraft players: "Our games been dead for 4 years" Overwatch players: "Most players already left, blizzard won't support the Esports scene, the hitboxes are terrible" League of Legends players: "Our game has less and less players everyday, Riot won't release the player numbers anymore because it has dropped, MOBAS are dying" Quake players: "400 daily players" World of Warcraft players: "No subscribers" COD WW2 players: "Full of hackers, p2p connections, expensive" TF2 players: Valve just gave us the last update, the game will never get ported to Source 2 and the competitive scene is non-existent" Thank you for reading :^) every game is dying and even you will be dead one day submitted by /u/dsits [link] [comments] |
Can we rename Herald into Challenger? Posted: 07 Dec 2017 06:11 AM PST We love to mess with LoL, especially because if its casual focus. This would boost the meme and it would be acutally funny reading in this sub how bad "Challengers" are. (Hint: Challenger is the highest rank in LoL) submitted by /u/noWeeknd [link] [comments] |

As a relatively new player, I find some of the talent tree descriptions to be very unclear. Is alt-tab + google the best solution? Posted: 07 Dec 2017 03:37 AM PST About me: I have roughly 150 Dota2 games, all played in the last 2 months. I used to play a lot of dota1 in 2006-2010. I'm ~70% through the all-hero challenge, and probably I've had issues with at least one of the talents for half the heroes. A couple of examples: - io: "Tether Grants Scepter Bonus" -> ???? Does it have something to do with Aghanim? If I pick it and also buy Aga, what will happen??
- io: "Tether Stuns" -> How many seconds? Can it stun multiple times? Can it stun multiple targets?
- Medusa: "+7 Split Shot Target" -> will she fire 10 arrows or will the 3 arrows have +7 something?
- Skywrath Mage: "Global Concussive Shot" -> Do I have to see the target? Will it hit multiple targets?
etc. Later edit: It feels to me that Dota2 is very unfriendly to new players. In addition to the above, matchmaking matched me with players with thousands of games from the beginning; they weren't very understanding with me being a new player. submitted by /u/H3llShadow [link] [comments] |
Tsunami's Hero Tips and Counters - Vol. XX: Dark Willow, Monkey King, Pangolier, Underlord Posted: 07 Dec 2017 08:06 AM PST Dark Willow - Bramble Maze is one of those weak ass roots that don't interrupt channels. A great Dota trivia question would be naming which roots interrupt channels, which ones provide true sight, and which ones do both because the root mechanic is PRETTY INCONSISTENT.
- Speaking of which, Brambles can trigger on invisible units, but they won't give true sight. Classic.
- You can activate Shadow Realm while channeling a TP. Or... or a Meteor Hammer.
- Shadow Realm also works the other way around. Much like Treant's Guise invisibility, activating items or spells won't break Shadow Realm.
- Shadow Realm will disjoint all incoming projectiles on cast.
- The bonus damage from Shadow Realm doesn't work on buildings or wards, but you can still use the bonus attack range provided by the spell to attack those types of units.
- If your attack misses, Shadow Realm damage won't land. If you die while the Shadow Realm projectile is flying, the bonus damage won't land.
- Cursed Crown doesn't provide any vision during the delay, but once the stun goes off you'll get ~2s of ground vision in its AoE. You can use that vision to get some extra damage or disable a target's Blink Dagger with a bonus range Shadow Realm attack.
- Cursed Crown draws aggro from creeps. If you're getting chased by a few enemies in the jungle, you can try casting it on a neutral who will start following you and then start following the people chasing you. One day there'll be a big play where a Willow casts the Crown on a creep and then Force Staffs it into the enemy team right as the delay ends.
- A target becoming banished/cycloned won't stop the Crown AoE stun from triggering around them.
- Jex won't attack any units in fog during Bedlam. Now the wiki claims that Jex has flying vision, so in theory that shouldn't be an issue, but in my testing it seems like yung Jex just has basic 600 ground vision.
- Jex's targeting is completely random in Bedlam. No priority is given to heroes, low HP targets, units you're right clicking, or anything. However, you can obviously influence what target is chosen by moving your hero around. You can vaguely see Jex's attack range from the pink aura surrounding him as he flies.
- Jex can attack Rosh during Bedlam.
- Even though Jex 'attacks,' they're not actual right clicks, but instead just a bunch of tiny magic damage nukes. This means that you increase Jex's damage with magic amplification, not armor minus.
- When casting Terrorize, you have to compensate for the lengthy cast animation and the time it takes for Jex to fly. Cancel the animation if you look like you're going to whiff it.
- Terrorize provides shared vision over all affected units over the duration of the fear.
- Remember that fears are also silences+mutes during their duration. A Terrorized Morph can't activate Attribute Shift and a Terrorized Sven can't activate BKB. All they can do is run.
- Terrorize is your only channel breaker. With an effective range of ~1700 units, it can be one that enemies may not expect.
- When Terrorized, Rosh just sits in his pit sulking and won't attack anything. Who would win? An immortal being cursed by the Gods to suffer for all eternity? Or one Jexy boi.
Versus - Pay attention to your pathing when playing against a Willow. The capture radius on Brambles is tiny. With a little effort, you should be able to sidestep the roots. And as we all know, things with the word Bramble in it are always easy to deal with.
- Bramble roots, the Cursed Crown debuff, and the Terrorize fear can all be purged off by any basic dispel. Lotus Orb can be a handy item to have on your team to help with that.
- On every bell toll from Cursed Crown you can faintly see some particles indicating the AoE of stun around your hero.
- Shadow Realm is basically the same thing as Slark's active Shadow Dance for targeting purposes. Ground targeted spells and items still work just fine against her. Items like Meteor Hammer. Write that down. M-e-t-e-o-r H-a-m-m-e-r. Best item 2017.
- Even though it looks like the AoE on Terrorize lingers, it only affects units in the AoE whenever Jex lands. A ground targeted lingering AoE fear sounds like a pretty sweet spell though. Like a reverse Winter's Curse.
- There's an interaction that I'm almost positive is a bug with fears: If you issue a stop command on your hero before getting feared, you won't move during a fear. You'll still be disabled, but instead of running back to base, you'll just turn to face your fountain and then stand still. I tested this with Savage Roar, QoP's 25 Scream talent, and Terrorize, and the behavior was consistent. Consider it a tip until it gets patched. Then let me know when it gets patched so I can take it out as a tip.
Monkey King - Monkey King is currently the 11th most picked hero in professional games since his Captain's Mode
introduction debut in 7.03. As a result, I'm sure you're all experts on his various interactions, but humor me as I list them anyway. - Boundless Strike's 'right click' works normally even if Monkey King is disarmed and can never miss. Shouldn't this spell only land 75% of the time now, though?
- Spell immune targets ignore all aspects of Boundless Strike.
- All on-hit effects can proc from Boundless Strike except for cleave. This includes adding or consuming Jingu stacks.
- No matter how many targets are hit in Boundless Strike, only one Jingu Mastery stack is consumed.
- You can't place Jingu stacks on illusions. An optimist sees this as a way to identify the real PL, a pessimist would be angry they can't tap that unattended CM illusion rune four times for a free Jingu.
- You're considered two 'levels' of high ground elevation up when perched on a tree, but enemies units will have vision of you at their ground level whenever you're jumping from tree to tree.
- Ground targeted spells will affect you normally when you're on a tree and you can still detonate Techies mines while jumping or sitting on a tree.
- Casting Boundless Strike or Mischief won't unperch you from a tree, but finishing a Wukong's Command cast will. You can use items, like TP, without getting unperched. You know what other item you can use?
The enemy will hear your Primal Spring channel wherever you targeted it. This was added in 7.04 as a means to nerf Primal Spring. It was definitely a nerf, but after some research, it seems to be somewhat exploitable. Basically, wherever you target the Spring, an audio cue plays at the targeted location. So here's what you do: - Once an enemy is at your maximum possible Spring range, target the Spring waaaaay the hell away from them, but along the same trajectory. Your Spring distance will max out on your intended target, but they won't hear the cue because the actual Spring target was miles away from them.
- Alternatively, you can freak the hell out of an enemy by targeting Primal Spring on them when you're absolutely nowhere near them. They'll hear the cue, but you'll be somewhere completely different. Enemy mid getting a little too bold? Target a Spring on them while you're regening in the fountain. See the enemy carry jungling but can't do anything about it? Who cares, target them anyway, maybe you'll bait out a BKB. Think they're taking Rosh? Screw it, target a Spring in the pit. Then watch the chaos unfold as they try to figure out where the hell you are.
- If an enemy doesn't have vision of your targeted spot, they won't hear anything at all. So you can also mask low-range Springs by targeting an area that may be hidden in tree fog or high ground.
Mischief is such a creative spell and it breaks my heart that it's on a hero who has so few practical uses for it. There are few contexts in which it's advantageous to Mischief yourself instead of just Tree Dancing, but here are a couple of situations to note: - When in Mischief, you won't appear on the enemy minimap at all. Handy for courier sniping or sneaking through warded areas.
- Enemy towers and creeps won't attack you when you're in Mischief.
- You can instantly drop aggro from creeps by going into Mischief. Just beware if a ranged creep attack was already in flight before you transformed because that projectile will mismanage your Mischief.
- You get 380 movespeed when disguised as a courier, which is faster than your hero even with boots. You can't force the courier transformation, though. All you can do is avoid standing next to any trees, rune spots, or out of the Rosh pit, and hope you get a lucky roll. Believe me, I tried everything. Standing next to your own courier, syncing it up with the game clock, typing SHREK I'M A DONKEY in chat before casting, nothing.
- The enemy can't see the Jingu Mastery buff over your head when you're in Mischief, but debuffs (like Dust or Fury Swipes) will still show above your disguise.
- You can theoretically cram yourself into various armpits around the river to hide yourself as a banana. Too bad I'm not about to test this on every graphics setting on every different terrain to see how viable this is, so just assume it's useless.
- Please share the first sentence of the previous tip to your friends who don't play Dota.
Wukong's Command soldiers basically have your right click plus whatever items you have. Unfortunately, MK's an AGI hero, otherwise Armlet could be pretty legit on him. Still gives all your soulja boys sweet purple hands, though. Wukong's Command soldiers can't bash, but they can proc every other on-hit item effect. Echo Sabre won't make them attack twice, but they will apply the slow. They also individually carry whatever auras your hero has, including Radiance. Versus - Your hero will ignore a Monkey King in Mischief when attack+moving.
- Tree Dance follows Blink Dagger rules, so DoT spells or things like Urn help make him a little less slippery.
- Destroying the tree he's perched on will stun Monkey King for a hefty time. Not many heroes can easily take advantage of this, but Windranger's Powershot, Ember Spirit's Remnant Activation, Storm Spirit's Ball Lightning, Phoenix's Supernova, Enigma's Midnight Pulse, or Batrider's Firefly are a few examples of spells that are either fast enough or large enough to catch a Monkey King by surprise. You know what else destroys trees? Meteor Hammer. You'd definitely surprise a Monkey King with that.
- You can also destroy some trees preemptively. Whenever I'm up against an offlane Timbersaw as a carry, I always buy a Quelling Blade and systematically raze down every tree in my lane. Against a Monkey King, you don't need to go full California wildfire, but try creating holes in the tree lines so that you may spot a Monkey King hopping from tree to tree.
- You'll need vision of him to even know what tree he's on to begin with. Night Stalker or KotL with their Agh's upgrades can be useful. Heroes with vision providing spells like Beastmaster Hawk, Razor's Plasma Field, or Puck's Illusory Orb are also good.
- His Jingu Mastery damage+lifesteal buff can be purged off with basic dispels.
- The audio cue from Primal Spring is reflected based on your camera placement. If you hear the guzheng(?) to your left, he targeted the Spring on the left side of whatever your camera's looking at.
- Wukong's Command soldiers' right clicks can be reduced by damage block from Stout Shield or Vanguard or Crimson Guard. I feel like I'm missing an item...? Oh right, Abyssal Blade too because it builds out of Vanguard. Yeah that's it.
- You can try shoving Monkey King out of his Wukong's Command safe space with a Force Staff if he's near the edge.
Pangolier Swashbuckle sets your damage flat and attacks every unit in the AoE four times. There are a few interactions to note: - Even though there are four... swashes? Each target receives their own individual 'attack.' A Javelin Piercing one target doesn't mean every target will get Pierced on the same swipe.
- Javelin is a popular damage option regardless. I believe people refer to stacking them as Capitalizing™.
- Each attack will burn mana with Diffusal Blade.
- Crits are not great because they multiply off of Swashbuckle's damage, but Bloodthorn can be good since the active will guarantee a crit for all four attacks.
- Basher gives you a pretty high probability Bashing a target in Swashbuckle, but only one unit in the AoE can ever get bashed due to Basher's cooldown.
- Maelstrom also has a cooldown, but you can potentially proc it twice in a Swashbuckle.
- Echo Sabre will slow every target in the AoE and won't put the Sabre on cooldown.
- Quelling Blade doesn't add damage to creeps in Swashbuckle.
- AA's Chilling Touch works on Swashbuckle attacks. Every target hit will consume a charge each attack.
Swashbuckle attacks can never miss and work through disarms. Swashbuckle and Shield Crash's movements are classed as forced movement. You can use them to move up and down cliffs, travel through trees without destroying them, and break out of spells like Slark's Pounce or Disruptor's Kinetic Field. Every time you successfully hit a hero in Shield Crash, the damage resistance buff is refreshed. The resistance buff can increase if you hit more heroes, but it'll never decrease if you hit fewer heroes. Shield Crash doesn't factor illusions for damage reduction, but it does factor Meepos. Sweet, sweet Meepos. You're disabled during the Shield Crash animation when walking, but you're not disabled during the Shield Crash animation when Rolling. This means that you can cancel a Rolling Shield Crash into Swashbuckle to move your Shield Crash landing AoE. All items work while in Rolling Thunder: Rolling Thunder can bounce into the secret shops, Power Cogs, Fissure, and Ice Shards. Rolling Thunder provides spell immunity and also serves as a basic dispel on cast. You can jump off the edges of the map in Rolling Thunder with Shield Crash. The only situation I can see this being useful is if you want to hide yourself as you TP out if the enemy has a targeted spell immune piercing disable. Pangolier appears to be the only other hero besides Io that doesn't have to turn to cast items. I assumed that this was only the case in Rolling Thunder so as to play nice with Blink Dagger and mid-Roll Meteor Hammer channels, but it turns out this dude can do it any time, any place. Contrary to what the HUD shows, Heartpiercer negates all armor on an enemy. Be it from items, spells, or AGI. Versus - Pangolier can't cast Swashbuckle or Rolling Thunder if he's rooted.
- Bloodseeker's Rupture forces Pangolier to make some tough choices about life while Rolling.
- Any spell immune piercing stun or root will cancel Rolling Thunder.
Underlord - Enemies don't see your Firestorm or Pit of Malice indicators during the cast animation. The only person you're mindgaming is yourself.
- Pit of Malice doesn't provide any vision by itself, but you can see its little rooty tendrils shoot up whenever it successfully catches a hero. Only heroes, though, so you can't drop a Pit in the pit to check if Rosh is home.
- Despite not providing any ground vision, Pit of Malice does provide true sight on invisible targets whenever they get rooted. More trivia for the root game.
- Pit of Malice doesn't root the entire AoE at fixed intervals, each unit is independently rooted whenever they walk in or stay in the Pit. So an item like Eul's allows you to root a target, Cyclone them, and then immediately have them rooted again when they land.
- You don't gain Atrophy Aura damage from illusions, wards, or Undying zombies. Heroes, creeps, or summons only.
- Fun fact: Enemy summons timing out actually do add to your Atrophy Aura. I find this is very weird since summons timing out don't give any experience and don't really 'die.' You know how Lone Druid's Spirit Bear Prestige's itself whenever you level it up? Yeah even that gives him Atrophy Aura damage.
- All creeps are created equal for Atrophy damage. Let that Dark Troll Summoner spawn some skeletons. Follow Nature's Prophet's treants to the ends of the earth. Let Wraith King spawn some skeletons. THEN METEOR HAMMER ALL OF THEM WHILE THEY'RE ROOTED IN PIT OF MALICE YEAAAAH
- Heroes that are banished or cycloned will still travel through your Dark Rift as long as they're in the AoE. In fact, cycloning yourself as Underlord during the delay is a popular tactic to help guarantee a smooth Rift.
- Anything you can Boots of Travel to, you can Dark Rift to. Actually, all the mechanics for Boots of Travel targeting are the same as Dark Rift targeting.
- There's a targeting indicator shown around wards and ward-type units which seems to imply you can Dark Rift onto them, but you actually can't.
- Some Uber drivers are cool with you bringing your dog along in their car. Dark Rift does indeed teleport creep-heroes, like Warlock's Golem or Visage Familiars.
- Unlike Io's Relocate, enemies won't see a TP indicator on their minimap when you Dark Rift. However, they can see what unit you're Rifting onto if they have vision.
- Dark Rift's teleport doesn't interrupt self or ally channels.
- When Underlord first came out everyone thought they were geniuses by TPing to an ally during the Rift delay for some sick drive-by escape Rifts. This is still possible, especially with Boots of Travel 2s, but the delay on Rift is just way too high to make it reliable.
Versus - Pit of Malice does not interrupt channels.
- Atrophy Aura reduces stat-based damage, but not raw (green) damage items or talents.
- Break disables Atrophy Aura.
- Illusions of Underlord will carry their own Atrophy Aura. Shadow Demon, Terrorblade, and Dark Seer can take advantage of this.
- If you think you're hot stuff, you can try using repositioning spells, like Tiny's Toss, or items, like Force Staff, to try and interfere with the number of passengers hopping in his Dark Rift. It's harder than it sounds since there is no reliable way to time when the Rift delay is ending other than the audio cue.

Even though nullifier doesn't silence you, it still greys out your abilities instead of just your items. Posted: 07 Dec 2017 02:34 AM PST Normal Nullified You can easily see the difference in lighting. The fact that someone actually copied the silence effect, removed the bars on the abilities and checked to see if was working properly means they must've noticed this, and then they decided to not fix it because they could get away with not doing it. Valve always half-arse things. submitted by /u/xHe4DHunt3r [link] [comments] |
Should the players with F behavior score have the ability to report others? Posted: 07 Dec 2017 05:30 AM PST I don't think they deserve it, having reports should be a privilege for good players who can be trusted not to use it in the fit of rage because their teammate didn't put a ward where they wanted or that they initiated at the wrong time. By letting the toxic players have reports you allow them to drag everybody else down to with them. submitted by /u/zangikutu [link] [comments] |

New ping menu is not responsive enough - need to shorten mouse drag distance Posted: 07 Dec 2017 01:52 AM PST It requires me to drag the mouse too much distance to trigger one of the more specific pings recently added. Compared to HoTS, where the different ping types has been around for a while, DOTA2's implementation feels a lot clunkier to use. submitted by /u/valueplayer [link] [comments] |

Valve, please remove Tiny from bot games Posted: 07 Dec 2017 05:06 AM PST As someone who has played Dota for almost 7 years now, I have grown fond of bot games. The ability to pause at any time and have fun without someone being unnecessarily toxic is absolute heaven for me. Turbo mode has enhanced this experience, with the couriers removing almost all item-related problems the bots had and the increased exp making sure you cant be 15 levels ahead. Some issues remain, most notably CK and Warlock being way strong for bots to handle, but these issues were acceptable. There is, however, a bigger problem. You see, Tiny has not yet been taught how to use his third ability. Tiny can't pick up trees. Tiny is useless. He has been even before his rework. He would rush blink and the hex, never even considering aghanims pre-update, instead filling up his inventory with wards every game. When the update came, I thought things would improve. Things did not improve. He still rushes blink into hex, which is acceptable I guess, but HE DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO USE TREE GRAB. In turbo mode, where everyone becomes really strong really fast, his stun and toss fall off quickly, and since that is all he has to offer, he serves little purpose other than being decent early game and then feeding net worth to the enemy team. If you aren't going to take the time to implement something properly, just take it out. Please Valve, it is time that you start addressing the real, game breaking issues. Please Valve, kill the Tiny bot. submitted by /u/PutinLolicaptor [link] [comments] |

6am Dota is a wonderful, surreal place. Posted: 06 Dec 2017 11:34 PM PST Firstly, I should point out that it was 6am when I queued for me (I live in the UK), but I decided to play on USE, since it seemed like it would be easier to find a game, so everyone was generally either East-Coasters or Mexicans playing at what was a reasonable time for them) So everyone picks their heroes, the drafts are normal-ish (Lion/Kunkka/Earthshaker/PA/Weaver vs. Axe (Me!)/Venge/Witch Doctor/Crystal Maiden/Puck), I attempt to open communication with my as-of-yet silent teammates, it goes about as well as expected. (Our friendly if a little mediocre mid Puck) So! We get in game, the lanes are all over the place with people swapping lanes and earthshaker tried to jungle for a little bit, I think? I have a pretty easy time as an Axe vs. a Weaver solo, everyone else is doing pretty good. Not much communication, except for Kunkka being a bit salty and our Venge, who I'm 95% sure is baked out of his mind and finds everything wonderfully hilarious. PA rushed brown boots BKB, Earthshaker went veil-refresher because initiation is overrated, I just kinda pootled around getting call kills for a while in my vaguely sleep-deprived haze, but it seemed to be working, because suddenly we were high ground and taking racks and shit, which was great! Kunkka bought a rapier and died about a minute later to yours truly, then me and their team fed it back and forth a little bit, Venge just started XDing left right and centre, until eventually there was a fight over the last lane during which creeps finished the ancient. It wasn't the craziest game ever, it was just an odd, fun experience, but I guess that's kinda the point, isn't it? It's weird, friendly nonsensical games like this one that kinda make me really love Dota sometimes, and I felt like posting something about it for whatever reason. I was only playing because I'm a hardcore insomniac, I have an exam in about an hour and a half of writing this (7:30am) and I'm stressed as hell, so I figured what the hey! Right, long ramble over. I don't particularly mind if nobody sees this, it's more for me than anyone else, but thanks for sitting through me go on if you did! submitted by /u/Eriyoldinok [link] [comments] |
