Diablo - Paragon: Why not simply make it a cosmetic bonus after 1000?

Paragon: Why not simply make it a cosmetic bonus after 1000?

Completely novel thought: Paragon is an issue! - JUST KIDDING, I've been complaining about this for 2.5 years ago, back in a time when I got massively downvoted and the community still thought paragon was fine. (The thread's responses are quite interesting to read a few years later, btw.)

The reason why I'm making a new thread is because I wonder why StarCraft 2 gets what Diablo 3 doesn't. For those who don't know, StarCraft 2 has a "casual PvE mode" that is called co-op (2 players team up to complete a scripted scenario against a computer). Completing this scenario yields XP, and that lets you level up the commander. But only up to level 15! So after a while players complained that there needs to be more, and so Blizzard added "masteries". They're literally the same as paragon in D3: You get an account-wide XP pool for all commanders that are at their max level 15; masteries give you bonuses (just like paragon), and they require increasingly more XP per level. The difference: masteries have a cap, at level 90. And you can never fill all masteries categories with points, as you get only half the points on each tab - imagine it as if you could earn at most 400 paragon points in D3.

Now you might say I'll advocate for a paragon cap, right? No. HELL NO, a cap is terrible, especially if it's too low. Blizzard realized this in SC2, so masteries were extended, and now go up to 1000. However, there's a catch: Anything above 90 is purely cosmetic. You get nice shiny badges, achievements, portrait frames, and so on. And most importantly, your co-op partner sees your level; so if you play with a paragon 300+ player in SC2 it's like playing with a paragon 2000+ player in D2: You know this guy has probably played a lot and knows how to play. But nothing that actually yields any power. The outcome? Co-op is insanely popular. Blizzard stated a while ago, co-op is the most popular of all game modes in SC2. You instantly find games at any hour of the day when queuing up. Of course there are bots - but no one cares! Because it's purely cosmetic. And people play for this "purely cosmetic value".

=> Please D3 devs, learn from SC2 co-op. Turn paragon into a cosmetic bonus after, let's say, 1000 (or any arbitrary number of your choice). Add achievements and portrait frames or whatever to p1500, p2000, and so on - but stop this stupid power creep that incentivizes botting, completely demotivates all legit players (especially those with a bot), and makes leaderboards meaningless.

Edit to clarify what I already said in text: I do not want a fixed, total cap. I understand that there always needs to be a reason to play further. I just think that currently paragon yields too much benefit - I brought up SC2 as an example because people "play on" even if there is only cosmetic reward. I just want to discuss that paragon is a problem right now - for many people - and maybe find a common ground. Which doesn't seem to work, as I did not anticipate such a polarized debate...

Cracked GR100 S12 playing 100% solo

Posted: 17 Dec 2017 08:18 PM PST

Not sure how uncommon high level solo play is, but I met my S12 goal of cracking GR100. Tal Rasha meteor wiz. My first try, too, in < 13 mins. Played purely solo. Took about 80 hrs. That was fun! My profile, if anyone's interested.

Monk - Zei's Stone of Vengeance confusion

Posted: 17 Dec 2017 01:11 PM PST

Hello. Recently i finished the Sunwuko Wave of Light set and i have a question regarding the title's gem. Since I can cast WoL wherever I point my mouse, does Zei's Stone effect counts from where I am standing or from where I am casting this spell? Thus, if I want to maximize my damage, where should I place myself and the spell? Thx in advance :)

Will there be X-mas sales?

Posted: 17 Dec 2017 05:22 PM PST

I recently got Diablo 3/RoS and I've been absolutely loving it, however the cost was abit hefty for me currently and I'm wondering if I should wait of for any possible x-mas sales on the necromancer pack however I'm not really sure if that's even a thing?

Any answers would be really appreciated :)

Potato Flavoured Bicycles...

I think I know the answer to this...If (for example) you have a 10% chance of block on a shield and you put the shield on the follower, do you get the bonus or is it only for the follower? Are the things you put on your follower, only for the follower or for you as well? Is there anything you can put on your follower that gives you the benefit other than unity or occulus? Is it worth it to put a gem on items that your follower is wearing?

Prediction: Diablo 4 likely being delayed about ~1 year after EA fiasco

Posted: 17 Dec 2017 10:34 AM PST

Just occurred to me that the devs may need to rethink whatever business model they had planned for D4 after the backlash over SW:BF2. Knowing Activision, and their push for skinner boxes to be in everything right now, I bet that loot boxes were a big part of the plan for D4. And, now, after the serious backlash at EA for these very things, I am betting Blizz is having to scrap some code to pull back on loot boxes for their yet unreleased titles. EA has shit the bed for everyone and all devs will have to rethink their strategies. Especially if Blizzard plans to ride D4 for 8-10 years like they did with D2/3. They have to consider it at least a slight possibility that loot boxes could be deemed gambling by the US gov't in the middle of the D4 cycle.
