Jesus, why is the other subreddit of the game such a joke?

Posted: 30 Dec 2017 06:36 AM PST

Holly hell, I bought the game a week ago and started playing, then I made the mistake to come and check reddit/game's forums...

I'm an MMO player and I did expect the "FPS community" to be more "childish" (no offence judging just by age when the average fps player is 18y/o and the average mmo player is 26y/o), but this is just something else...

I could not even find a post about the actual game... Everyone is just whining and saying stuff like how the game is dead and how much better D1 was (totally nothing to do with nostalgia /s)...

I mean, I get it they annoyed some people with the in-game store that sells cosmetics, but isn't this expected at this time and age? Does it even affect gameplay?

Why is everyone crying their ***** off? Do they see for the first time a company selling cosmetic rewards for real life cash?

I know that reddit/the forums are mainly filled with people that are not happy with any game, and the vast majority just plays the game, but wow... I had not seen such a huge circle-jerk in a loong time...

Decided to do a mini-review thing, having had a few weeks to play Destiny 2, from the perspective of a clueless PC player.

Posted: 30 Dec 2017 08:47 AM PST

saw a thread about DTG and was going to write a comment about still enjoying the game despite its flaws, but it ended up being far too long. so here's a thread of my opinion of Destiny 2 instead.

I'm a PC player, so never experienced the first Destiny, so i don't really have much of a perspective, but Destiny 2 is fun enough to keep playing.

the universe is interesting (with a few things i don't like).

  • at first i didn't like the Fallen. they seemed like a legally-distinct-covenant, but after reading the wiki and finding out they are a race the traveler abandoned, with ether being fake light they rely on to survive. it gives them a lot more character and plot potential.
  • the Taken are awesome. bit creepy, bit cool, bit unknown. probably my favourite enemy faction so far. i would like to see far more lore around the taken in D2 since its all in Destiny 1 as far as i can tell from the wiki. very confusing as a new player to have Oryx mentioned all the time as if i know wtf is going on.
  • Cabal are ok but don't really blow me away, they feel a bit like a standard enemy faction. There is a lot of story and encounters with the Cabal in D2 but strangely i don't feel particularly attached to them as an enemy.
  • The Hive seem pretty cool from what i've read, but in D2 they are on Titan and thats it. To fight Hive elsewhere they have to be Taken, which is disappointing (even though i like the Taken). i would like to see more Hive cause right now they don't mean a lot.
  • i don't like the Vex. they seem to be both mind-mindbogglingly OP and completely inept at the same time. a planet-sized computer simulating infinite realities that can have its security systems bypassed by... shooting boxes with a gun? i have difficulty suspending my disbelief. so much of CoO dissolved into 'but... why not just delete that one reality instead of turning the simulation NPCs against me?'. very contrived.
  • the story was all over the place, and ended very quickly. it felt like i was just ticking off boxes and going to the next planet. the gameplay and exploring new environments carried me through it, but the plot itself was disappointing.

the gameplay is good, with a few things i don't like.

  • The gun-play is solid, it feels very similar to Halo: Combat Evolved for PC ages ago.
  • Hand Cannons are ridiculously fun, they are similar to the NS-44 Commissioner from Planetside 2, which i loved.
  • Scout Rifles are also very satisfying. i'm in the tough position of not knowing whether to use Better Devils or Nameless Midnight because both of them are stupidly fun but ive only got one kinetic slot. would be nice to be able to mod one of them into an energy weapon or something like that.
  • The core gameplay of pew-pew -> loot-loot is good, up to a point. right now my dropped engrams are capped at 305, so once i've got the milestones for powerful gear done for the week, no loot i drop is going to be worth using, except if it has a Masterwork stat. really upsets the train of shoot-loot when you cant get any loot worth using.
  • Too much content is gated behind Eververse. I don't have a problem with EV as a concept (i have spent a lot of money on Guild Wars 2's premium store) but the sheer amount of items getting added to EV combined with the lack of free in-game content updates is not healthy for the game in my opinion. increase the free updates, or decrease the rate of new EV items, or both. right now EV looks like naked greed and is very offputting, to the point i refuse to buy silver, whereas i have probably spent £200+ on GW2 over the years because their business model is far less insulting.
  • no in-game chat for public zones. makes no sense. if people are offensive give them chat bans or let players mute them. the open world feels emptier than it should because no-one can communicate easily. also hard to make friends easily since i have to add friend before finding out if they are the kind of person i actually want to play with.
  • generally not enough content. there is only one map per planet. the amount of effort that has gone in to world building is very impressive and each zone is high quality, but suffers from repetition when there are story mission, adventures, lost sectors, etc all crammed in. Titan is the worst offender, i went into the Arcology and the turbine pillars too many times when completing all the Titan content, simply because there wasn't enough map to give each bit of content its own area. item descriptions mention an Appalachian Dead Zone on earth, which would be great to visit. This limited content ties into the issue with weekly milestones for gear. once you have your powerful gear for the week, its repetitive content for gear that isn't worth using. the shoot-loot gameplay loop breaks down. its still fun gunplay that can carry the game to an extent, but not sustainable in the long-term without fresh content.

I enjoy playing Destiny 2, it is fun, with definite potential, but it feels like Bungie hasn't managed to figure out what that potential is or how to get to it yet. The basics of gameplay, plus an established universe from Destiny 1, should turn into something special. it just isn't there at the moment.

You don't need flawless in trials to get amazing loot.

Posted: 30 Dec 2017 07:47 AM PST

Just wanted to share with everyone a another approach, and a different perspective on trials for those struggling.

At one point I thought trials was all about the flawless. My friends and I of course shoot for flawless every week, but we hope for the best and expect the worst. Because of this we began to instead set our sights on short term goals to maximize our loot gain every weekend while aiming for the sky.

So simply put we started to target and grind out challenges. To complete all the challenges you need 5 wins with room for 2 losses. The others challenges should be completed in the process of winning five matches on one card. Along side this wiith two wins you can net 49 tokens and 2 engrams per character. Across three characters that leaves 6 engrams with 147 tokens. Altogether allowing for 14 engrams per weekend without completing a ticket. Using this method you can obtain all the armor and weapons including the ornaments. Even the helmet ornament only requires 7 completed tickets and this can be done with loses on the card. You literally don't need a flawless at all to gain all the rewards. With the only exception being the flawless versions of gear.

It is still by no means easy, we get crushed, ruined, stomped, and mutilated in matches against players way above our level. But sticking it out we eventually run into tickets we have fighting chances on. As long as your team communicates and moves together while team shotting, you at least stand a chance. So far I have gained all the armor with ornaments only missing the chest and helmet. I'm also missing the ornament for the helmet which I'm working on with only 1 completed ticket so far, but it is possible. I've still yet to go flawless but here's to hoping.

EDIT: TL;DR challenge grinding is an amazing way to get trials gear without the need for flawless.

Let’s talk about Season 2 Clan Rewards and how they can improve.

Posted: 30 Dec 2017 12:03 AM PST

In the spirit of giving constructive feedback to the Bungie team. I'd like to talk about clan rewards for clan ranking.

Let's take a look at the rewards you unlock in Season 2 as you progress in rank:

Clan Rank 2 - The Extra Mile Completing weekly clan milestones give you an additional 5 legendary shards.

Clan Rank 3 - Vex Slayer Improves rewards from eliminating Vex enemies.

Clan Rank 4 - Mercurial Luck Chance to receive an additional simulation seed when one is collected on Mercury.

Clan Rank 5 - Crucible Hoarder Chance to receive a second Crucible token when you receive one.

Clan Rank 6 - Explore the Infinite Chance to receive a Legendary engram when completing heroic adventures with your clan on Mercury with your clan members.

I'd like to give my take on these rewards and why I think they need a more insightful overhaul. To qualify my perspective prior to my analysis, I'm currently a Founder and Admin of an 80+ member clan on the Xbox platform. I frequently play with the clan and help drive and coordinate a multitude of activities for the group to engage in on a weekly basis. In my role, I'm constantly looking at ways to encourage participation and to motivate my peers to push forward in their Destiny 2 journeys.

Clans, I think are a wonderful thing. They help cultivate a camaraderie and forge real friendships both in game and out of the game that can outlast any AAA game or DLC. We share triumphs and defeats together. We move mountains as a joint force. And as a small informational hive we disseminate new discoveries at lightning speed to benefit our experience together. I love our merry band of guardian misfits. And in our clan, we all have a mostly positive fondness and hope for Destiny 2. Both in how it sits today, and where it could eventually get to with some much needed TLC.

So clan rewards are important. In a loot driven game, we want to see an impact to the investment we bring. (Even if we have achieved the next clan rank within the first few hours in on reset day) It gives us something else to chase as a group. Be proud of. Celebrate. And dare I say, share as a trophy to chat about and flaunt to others.

The clan ranks above to me do not represent this ideology. And as stated by the Bungie Dev team, the vision is to give people a reason to band together. Who want to be in a clan. And guided games and other elements woven into the fabric of gameplay are there to steer you towards this. Better for them to have a sustainable community, better for us to want to continue to be a part of it.

The break starts with the rewards but the miss expands greater than this. Rank by rank, I see slight economy boons granted. But truthfully, these are negligible to any active player. 5 legendary shards. An extra crucible token after a crucible game. A legendary engram after a heroic adventure. I don't see the incentive. And as a normal legendary engram, versus a powerful, a lot of us wouldn't want to invest the time to do a heroic adventure. These aren't impactful or motivating milestones to achieve. Let alone worthy of cheerleading your team to race toward.

I believe the Dev team can rethink this and easily make value added improvements. The concept of this system is a solid upgrade from D1. It addressed a gap present as integrating clans made sense to gameplay and it satisfied community calls for clans to be a part of the in game experience. But the execution fell short. It can be retooled to be much more valuable and meaningful to the population.

My recommendations still operate on the assumption it would keep the playing field fair for clans of all sizes. But here are my ideas to start the conversation:

  • Add in Robust Goals for a Clan to Achieve.

Possibilities like, complete 50 raids as a clan in a season. Win 100 crucible games as a clan. Play 40 adventures while in a clan fireteam. Host 25 guided games. Each accomplishment could net a meaningful reward.

  • Boost Rewards per Clan Accomplishment and Rank.

Make rewards progressive. The more time investment required, the better the rewards. 100 crucible games in a season could mean one more powerful crucible engram, crucible masterwork weapon or maybe clan crucible exclusive emblems, ornaments, etc. Collection worthy. Helpful. Useful.

  • The More you Achieve, The More you are Rewarded.

Completing 50 raids with X amount of clan members in a fireteam can net you an additional powerful engram level raid drop each week from the newest raid or lair. Completing all PVE clan challenges in a season (I.e. 50 raids, 300 strikes, 150 nightfalls, 75 heroic adventures) could net you a Weekly Vanguard package as a clan. Chance at an exotic/powerful engram level reward along with a random cocktail of shaders, ornaments, legendary mods, and masterwork materials.

  • Boost Visibility of Achievement Attainment.

Unlock new clan banner designs as you rank. Allow a clan member to replace a public event flag with their clan flag if they are the first ones to touch it! Create an emblem that ports in the clan banner of the respective clan. Allow emblems to track how many clan activities completed. Enhance font of clan name on emblems (Bronze, Silver, Gold font showcasing progression and achievement)

  • Encourage Clan Competition and Corresponding Rewards.

This could be coupled with clans pledging with factions during rallies. Attaining additional rewards if their majority pledged faction wins. Competitive PvP achievements or PvE collection events, SRL events. Adding creative ways to compete with other clans to win and earn more rewards. Rewards the community will truly look forward to!

These are my suggestions. What would you like to see?
