Settling down in BotW's Hyrule

Posted: 15 Nov 2017 07:37 AM PST

Let's say Nintendo surprises everyone and out of the blue, the new DLC content comes with the ability to put down a house for Link anywhere on the map. A little cottage with a bed, cooking pot, stable, smoking chimney, garden patch, a dog that pops in and out and a bench where passing travellers stop by...somewhere to dry out of the rain and unwind.

You only get one spot to put it, anywhere in BotW's world. Where would you put yours?

When will this cycle end?

Posted: 14 Nov 2017 03:24 PM PST

If there come a time where the latest incarnation of link, zelda, and ganon/demise where to question their role in this cycle, and attempt to either change or put an end to the cycle, will it ever succeed?

If the protagonists find out that this conflict will repeat forever with countless people suffering under it, wouldnt they start questioning their existence and attempt to stop the cycle?

Imagine this occurring.

  • Latest incarnation of ganon either trying to kill himself or trying to escape his destiny of becoming an incarnation of demise. not wanting to become yet another unwilling host to of a being of evil.

  • Latest incarnation of link trying to escape his role as the hero or even outright refusing to kill ganon upon realizing the cyclical nature of this conflict. Instead of pulling out the master sword, he refuses on the grounds that he's not willing to let history repeat itself

  • Latest incarnation of zelda trying to find a way to use her powers to end the cycle rather than seal or defeat ganon. knowing that if this cycle continues, hyrule will never truly prosper.

Breath of the wild fix?

Posted: 14 Nov 2017 10:13 PM PST

i was looking at some of the posts on r/zelda, and noticed a discussion on the subject of it being barren. A comment got my attention how some people lose interest because after you explore something and know what it is it takes away from it. That made me think about how majoras mask and ocarina of time worked. the over-world changes in ocarina of time when you turn into an adult link and in majoras mask certain events would happen at a distinct a time. everday events would be different and on the last day majora was the only thing stopping you at the end. Also, wind waker has an example of this when you have to go to greatfish to find jabun. the weather and music change. If Nintendo added more events that changed the environment and atmosphere, then the over-world would be interesting to explore again. thoughts and ideas?

I keep seeing people say BOTW open world is barren and there isn’t much to do

Posted: 14 Nov 2017 07:19 PM PST

I just don't get did these people just stay in the middle by the castle?? There is so much to do in this game and some of my favorite things to do was just sit and watch the sunset and listen to the music. Why do people think open world games have to have something around every corner?

How do you use the baton in wind water? The game cube version if that helps. I couldn't get that baton to do anything but left and right. Help. I feel dumb.

I think the Zelda series is the best, but I wasn't able to buy a Switch until recently. It's been interesting observing, from the sidelines, the reception to BotW...

Posted: 14 Nov 2017 01:53 PM PST

No spoilers, please, because I don't have BotW yet. This is the first time in a long time that I haven't been able to play a Zelda game shortly after it's released. I'm still not able to buy it just yet, but I'm curious about the reception at this point, so I broke down my sense of the fan reaction into a few points (see below; but there may be some potential spoilers, as I'm trying to sum up fan reactions, albeit in general terms).

  • Some (many?) folks are disappointed in the lack of traditional dungeons.
  • Some (many?) folks think the main story is surprisingly poor.
  • Some (many?) folks think the bosses are repetitive and poor.
  • Where the game shines is in how it deals with everything that, in the other games, typically occurs outside the dungeons -- so, towns, NPCs, cool areas, side-quests, etc.

Do I have this right, more or less? I'm most interested in the side-quests. Are they really great?
