With this whole shitstorm about Star Wars Battlefront II going on you suddenly realize how great hearthstone is

Posted: 15 Nov 2017 02:01 AM PST

I mean if this was Battlefront II...

do you realize how shitty it would be to pay 80 Dollars/Euro and not even get a full game?

And to get a legendary you would have grind for 40 Hours.

If you play too much you wouldn't even get any more ingame currency to limit the earnings.

Even worse, you would pay a lot for preorders and later find out, that what you ordered actually sucks.

And do not forget, communication with the community would be really bad!

The worst would be the horrible lootbox rng to limit what you get from both your own earning and the money you spend.

I guess we dodged a bullet!

At least the DLC would be free though :)

Edit: Thanks for gold random stranger

Blizzard taking shots at EA for Battlefield 2 while there is a "Hearthstone is too expensive"-discussion going on

This week's Tavern Brawl is "Treasure in the Catacombs!" (November 15, 2017)

Posted: 15 Nov 2017 09:00 AM PST

Description: The Catacombs are so close you can taste them! Race with your opponent to complete the quest giving both players a chance at awesome treasure!

You win a Kobolds and Catacombs pack!

This is the first time we've seen this brawl. It gives you a deck; no collection required! Just choose your hero.

Both players start with a new, neutral quest called Journey to the Catacombs.

  • Quest: 7 minions are played by ANY player.

  • Reward: Master chests for all!

  • Whoever completes their quest first gets a head start on getting the treasure! "If you are the player completing the quest, the chest spawns with 4 health instead of 8." Thanks, /u/SirVataqun!

The Master Chest is a 0/8 with Deathrattle: Give your opponent a fantastic Treasure. This is our Marin brawl!

Once the quest is completed, it is automatically replayed for both players.

I just realized that NONE of the KotFT class Legendaries is viable in competitive decks.

Posted: 15 Nov 2017 01:49 AM PST

It's safe to say that almost every class DK is viable and has earned a spot in one or multiple competitive decks, however NONE of the actual class Legendaries see competitive play.

Hadronox, Professor Putricide, Sindragosa, Archbishop Benedictus, Moorabi, Lillian Voss, Bolvar, Fireblood, Blood Queen Lana'thel, Rotface, none of them is considered strong enough to earn a spot in a Tier 1-3 deck.

Do you think that it's a design choice to tone down future legendary minions and by that non making them essential for deckbuilding purposes?

Why not implement full Dust refund within one hour of crafting a card?

Posted: 15 Nov 2017 06:52 AM PST

Currently there is arguably very little room for experimentation in Hearthstone, especially if you are f2p and have not devoted years of your life to daily quests and arena. Experimentation is always risky and taking into account how hard dust is being earned now, when it backfires, it hurts you really badly. For example, you would never craft Putricide. He might be fun card in a built around him deck, but you would just throw away insane amount of dust. That s the case with many cards, that do not see much play. Being able to craft them and play a couple of games would not only diversify casual play but also provide devs with more data on playability of certain cards, which in turn would help to make Hearthstone better overall.

What if you are completely new and have no idea, which hero and archetype would suit you best? Budget decks do not really provide you with a full insight. Being able to just try whatever you want without severe consequences would be great, but there will still remain incentives to collect more cards as enjoying the game makes you want to spend more time in game and craft other cards permanently.

Tldr: Lack of room for experiments due to reward system is frustrating in a card game. Option to "test" cards within a certain period of time without severe consequences for your dust budget seems really neat and useful and would not force HS devs to alter their current business model.

P.s. My question is: Would implementation of such option hurt business really badly? What are the overlooked problems of it? Too dificult to comprehend for children?)

Edit: That s just a proposal of an option, not a complete variant. Time given to disenchant can vary and there definetly should be some sort of a cap in order to prevent abuse: You can use this option for every card only once a week or smth. Of course, this idea requires some thinking and balancing and I would be glad to hear your ideas!

Edit 2: Wow post hit front page! I am so happy right now!

Edit 3: It might actually be better to restrict card usage by the number of games played (3 for example), other than time. As proposed in comments.

The Most Justice for BM in Arena I've Ever Seen!

I really hope the 'Recruit' mechanic doesn't turn the game into a complete high rolling meta

Posted: 14 Nov 2017 01:56 PM PST

I know we haven't seen the new cards yet, so this is pure speculation. However, based on what we know so far of the new Recruit mechanic, I really hope it doesn't turn every class into ''Big Priest''.

Personally, I find Big Priest to be one of the worst archetype in the game. There's a reason why cards have mana value : because they are associated with a certain power level that cost X amount of ressources to play.

With a mechanic like Big Priest, you have access to a loophole where you are basically allowed to bring cards of significant value on the board, for a fraction of the price.

It's a game dynamic that is entirely based on what people call ''high rolling'' and is usually either extremely disappointing for the player trying to make it work OR extremely boring/frustrating for the opponent.

Having a mechanic like that is very bad design. It's basically a coin toss to see if you can create a board state that cannot be answered by any other standard deck.

I'm very excited for K&C but I'm really hoping the new Recruit mechanic doesn't shift the entire meta toward that type of decks.

Never Dust - Play with what you open

Posted: 15 Nov 2017 09:26 AM PST

Wanted to share a quick story while we wait for the new expansion.

First of all, I am still playing jungle giants druid (I'm at the cozy rank 10 floor currently). The quest is bad and it's slow and it's by no means a competitive deck, but I opened the quest AND a golden Tyrantus in Ungoro so I can't help it. More on that in a second.

This deck is fun. I play all sorts of big creatures, I get random big guys from the Tortolla Forager, and I get to play Barnabus the Stomper, my favorite dino in the set. Ultimate Infestation after Barnabus allows you to go absolutely nuts, dropping bomb after bomb for free. Sometimes you get rushed down, sometimes you overwhelm them with huge dudes. I've played the deck a lot and really enjoy it.

Two weeks ago I went to a Fireside Gathering to get Nemsy. There was a little tournament set up in the Fireside Brawl format (three classes, pick a new one when you lose, first one to lose with three classes loses the match). Each class had pre-constructed lists, and Druids list was Jungle Giants. I ended up winning all four matches in that brawl, largely because I was able to play Jungle Giants Druid and Quest Hunter effectively against players who likely didn't understand the deck or matchup as well as I did.

I'm not a guy who wins tournaments, either. Played on my iPad since GvG, I hit rank 5 most months, preordered Un'goro (not KFT), and have never made legend.

Here's my point: With the new expansion on the horizon and so much talk about the cost of Hearthstone, I want to encourage everyone to play with the cards you open. Dusting your cards for other cards is really, really inefficient. A while back I dusted Y'sharjj to try to craft Fandral, and I ended up really missing him lately as a lot of decks have used him very effectively. Find uses for "bad" cards and learn from how they work (or don't). I have found it to keep the game fresh and interesting for a long time.

Thanks for reading!

What about monthly quests?

Posted: 15 Nov 2017 07:15 AM PST

There's been recently lots of discussion and complaining about pricing, rewards and quests. I'm F2P player and I've been pretty unlucky this week with quests, only getting 40 gold ones even after rerolling. To maximize the gold income I try to wait until get 50+ quests but as I mentioned before this is not my best week. I'm kind of losing motivation to play so I thought about it and came up with an idea of getting a monthly quests. I'll give you example of what I mean. Basically the idea is we get once a month extra quest(s) that requires more effort and is not easily done. Let's say the quest would be something like deal 1500 damage to your opponent hero or play 500 cards from a single class (mage, paladin etc.). I would stay away from those quests which say win X games which in my opinion force players to use top tier decks in unranked mode. The reward to make it simple would be let's say 500 gold or even some dust. My point behind the monthly quests is to keep us motivated to come back and play even though all of our daily quests are 40g and it's kind of opposite idea of getting rewards for logging every day which had been mentioned in other topics and are really bad idea in my opinion. This type of quests even slightly increase the gold income people's been complaining about. What do you guys think about it?

Flavors - How do you "explain" to yourself why certain minions have certain effects/abilities? Which ones don't make any sense to you?

Posted: 14 Nov 2017 04:05 PM PST

Some minions have effects that fit quite well with their name, lore or art.

A few a pretty self explanatory -

  • abusive sergeant gives a minion +2 attack, because he spurs them on as a drill sergeant.

  • The one damage that blowgill sniper deals is his blowdart being fired.

  • C'thun minions perform cultistic rituals that strengthen C'thun. All that stuff is made very clear, fits with their flavor and is quite intuitive.

But for some, you have to be a bit more creative to realize (or sometimes guess) why they gave a specific minion their ability.

  • I imagine Daring Reporter gaining stats whenever your opponent draws a card is because those hidden pieces of info adds to her potential scoop.

  • Nesting Roc gains taunt when two minions are on your side of the board, because some parental instinct compels it to protect the minions - after all, it is nesting.

  • Cult master draws a card for each friendly minion that dies, because she is part of a cult that sacrifices their members in rituals. Whenever one of your minions dies, she performs the ritual and draws power (in this case cards) from it.

  • Gentle Megasaur lets murlocs live on its back (You can see them in the cardart, if you zoom in), and the adaptation that dinosaurs possess in ungoro affects them as well.

  • Patient Assassin has stealth, because he is hiding underwater. (Look at the golden cardart)

But others are pretty hard to explain.

  • Why does a bittertide hydra deal damage to you, whenever it takes damage?

  • Why does venture co mercenary make your other minions more expensive?

  • And what exactly does Moorabi do to frozen minions, to add copies of them to your hand?

So, let's all take a break from complaining about pricing and the lack of new spoilers, and just talk about flavors for a bit. Which ones make sense to you? Which ones have your own personal headcanon? And which ones make it obvious that someone at team 5 had a really creative idea for an effect, but no character or spell that fit? Discuss!

Thijs with the calls

Posted: 15 Nov 2017 05:44 AM PST

I live in Val'shara and the price of 60 packs are higher than ever. The situation is very dire.

Posted: 14 Nov 2017 08:47 PM PST

Hey there, don't be scared. My name is Aldos Duskwing, and I am a senior local merchant that occasionally does some card packs trading. I grew up in Val'shara and lived here all my life, working relentlessly to provide for me and my family.

Time is short and let me cut to the chase: ever since the legion invasion, the price of hearthstone packs in Val'shara has gone up by 60%. This is simply put, insane. I have been on a investigation on how this could have happened, and here's the information I have gathered over the past few months:

Now, in Val'shara, hearthstone has only became popular in recent years, yet it is now one of the most essential activities during our daily lives. I was walking by ashenvale the other day and saw the mighty demi-god, Lord of the Forest and patron god of all druids regardless of race and gender, Cenarius playing a round of hearthstone himself, not a care in the world, as if none of the catastrophe that legion have brought down exists. I see him tapping on the screen, playing cards like [wild growth], [jade blossom] and suddenly, a card with some ghouls printed on it, and it is a card I have never seen before. From a distance I could barely make out the name from his G-phone screen, something something LUL? I mumbled to myself. Apparently the opponent conceded the moment he played the card, as I saw an evil grin appear on the forest lord's face, I immediately sensed something sinister might be at play here, but I dare not disturb the demi-god's rest and walked by hastily.

We have always traded card packs by unicorn horns, these precious and beautiful tokens are a gift from the local unicorns, as they age they grow new horns, and they leave behind the old horns for the night elf residents here as a symbol of peace and life. As hearthstone is the highest form of competition and the winners are deemed skillful and bright while the losers are regarded as idiots, we fair it only right that a card pack should be traded on a currency that is completely worth it. A gift from an ancient creature that was blessed with magic and might for 5 useless digital cards? It's such a good deal.

However, ever since the legion invasion, lots of brave travelers have came to this land to help us fight the legion and their vile pets. The corruption on the druids, the fall of our mighty goddess ysera, and the emerald dream twisted by the vicious satyr's hands, it's destroying this land and we needed outside help more than ever. Yet, the price of hearthstone card packs has dramatically rose from then, at the price of which is now 1 and 6/10 of a unicorn horn. I want to make a bold assumption here, but I'm afraid for my life if I ever uttered it out loud. You see, ever since the arrival of the adventurers, the local unicorns have been disappearing at an alarming rate. You used to see unicorns drifting everywhere, and now they all seemed vaporized, as if never existed before. I haven't seen an unicorn for a very long time, and yet the amount of horns the adventurers provide to trade for packs has grew more and more.

Where did they even got these horns? Something treacherous is going on, but I can't quite put my finger on it...

But here's something that I am truly afraid of.

I was finishing business with a friend near shala'nir the other day, as I was walking on the path back to my village, that's when I heard the sound of wings slapping and loud screeching coming near me.

Harpies.

I started running, looking for places to hide, reaching for the shiv in my pocket. Defeating these creatures with a bow is a piece of cake, but in close combat, it might prove to be quite tricky. As I hear the whirling sound draw near, I rush towards the nearest wooden corridor. The harpy strikes a diving pose, ready to snatch me as it's lunch. I charge up a frostbolt in my hand and unleash it when the harpy's claws are just inches from me. A crit! The harpy cries out loud as it falls to the ground, I tread carefully to its place and slice open it's throat to make sure it's dead.

As I gathered some of its feathers and pluck out its eyes, I noticed a unicorn horn on a necklace, tied on it's feet. It's glowing red, unlike any of the horns I have ever seen, as a normal one does glow, but they are the colors of nature, of life, of magic. This one, its glows are ... baneful. The nefarious red that resembles flesh and decay. I get a chill down my spine just looking at it, yet I cannot look away. The glow calls to me, draws me near, I picked it up, as if I can't control myself.

That's when I hear the voices.

'Hey there, don't be scared, my name is ...'

I ditched the horn into a lake nearby and ran, far and far away.

Anybody else just have that one audio cue they hate to hear?

Posted: 14 Nov 2017 08:09 PM PST

Do you ever just hear some noise in the game that just pisses you off or makes you want to instantly concede when you hear it?

Me personally it happened earlier today. I keep a golakka in all my decks just because i hate pirate warriors. I saw i was facing a priest and thought "no way this priest is playing pirates" so I pressed re draw on my golakka. In the kitchen pouring water i just hear faintly "AVAST MATEY" tch tch tch tch BOOM "IM IN CHARGE NOW". I didn't go back to my computer for another 20 minutes.

The post about prices in Brazil is really misleading

Posted: 14 Nov 2017 10:02 AM PST

The prices here are not ok, and it never was, our taxes are one of the highest of the free world, Nintendo knowing this, decided to leave our country.

This post only shows ignorance of international economics, the only thing the user did was convert the currency values, and this is not how you do it.

The spending power of a country is what needs to take into account, this is the PPP (Purchasing power parity), and our PPP is one of lowest in the whole world.

Brazil GDP/PPP comparisson with USA

In Brazil prices are really high, and when it comes to games and technology is even worse, so i hope that people really understand this here in this sub.

EDIT: Formating

EDIT 2: Thanks for bringing this to the front page, didn't think people would really care about this, but i'm really glad a lot people did.

EDIT 3: I just want to say some things.

I'm not an expert in economics, but i do know a little. I'm not asking Blizzard to lower the prices in my country, i just wanted to give people some perspective of our economic system so the post in question doesn't look like we pay much less than other countries and that we are fortunate or something. Thanks to a lot of users (that are probably brazilian) that helped a lot of people here to understand what i was trying to say.

Ukrainians are still forced to pay for the packs with Russian currency.

Posted: 14 Nov 2017 11:06 AM PST

This is a concern that bothers people here a lot. I don't want to bring politics, but regardless, Ukrainian players are still forced to pay with Russian rubles for the packs. How is this okay? Steam, for example, charges us with Hryvnias already (Ukrainian currency), but before that, we paid in dollars. What is the reasoning behind choosing Russian currency for Ukrainian players?

Kobolds & Catacombs - Tale of the Fox Part 1

You can still have fun before the next expansion drops. Here's some deck lists for you to try.

Posted: 14 Nov 2017 06:10 PM PST

Hi guys I just wanted to share some decks I've been having fun with. A lot of decks probably aren't optimised and lots of room for change so just make the changes as you see fit.

Apologies to any deck creators I may not have credited.

Malyogg Hunter

The only Wild deck in my list because it is just too much fun. Idea is to get an Emporer tick on Malygos and enough of the burn spells (Arcane shot, On the Hunt and Quick Shot) to kill your opponent. Kings Elekk and Stitched Tracker help you to draw the minions you need. If all else fails you have Yogg-Saron to play to try finish your opponent.

AAEBAR8GtAPWEairAumsAoW4AobDAgyNAagCtQPJBO0GgAfFCP4M1BHLFOmrAtPNAgA=

C'Thun Quest Warrior

Quest warrior with a bit of Armour gain and card draw and possible C'Thun finisher.

Hyseria's Hadronox Taunt Druid

Super fun deck to play. Play taunts to stay alive then play Hadronox and Moat lurker it the next turn and follow up with Strongshell Scavenger to Buff all your taunts. You can see Hysteria playing it Here

Chumps Keleseth Highlander Priest

Chumps top 100 Keleseth Highlander Priest. Basically combined Anduin Priest with Keleseth Rogue to make this obnoxious deck. Can see Chump explaining and playing the deck here

Moneybags Rogue

A deck from PedanticTweed which is an "all-legend highlander control rogue". Just copy and paste the deckcode and replace any missing legendaries with ones from your collection. Because Legendaries are fun.

Renounce Warlock

Mulligan for Renounce darkness and Barnes, throw everything else back. Play barnes on 4 to pull your Y'Shaarj then renounce darkness. Lots of room for changes in this deck. Basically all you need is Renounces Darkness and fill with your deck with spells. Even the Barnes into Y'Shaarj combo isn't needed for fun.

Elemental Shaman

A fun deck with Elemental Synergy. Ancestral Spirit on Earth Elemental will kill most decks without silence or hard removal.

Dear Blizzard, please let us pick what packs we earn from Arena runs.

Posted: 14 Nov 2017 09:14 AM PST

I love playing arena I just wish I could earn an Un'goro pack instead of KFT or a classic pack instead of a KFT pack. I don't know if there are reasons why we can't pick what pack we earn but I think it would be really nice if we could and definitely beneficial to at least me. This way we could keep doing arena runs and not have to spend whatever gold we earn on a different pack.
