Super Smash Bros - The Tragedy of the Smash Spectator

The Tragedy of the Smash Spectator

Posted: 10 Nov 2017 09:44 AM PST

I've never seen an ad for a Smash tourney. For a community trying to grow, this is a major problem.

Posted: 10 Nov 2017 05:40 PM PST

The only reason I know the Smash scene exists is because I stumbled upon it by pure luck as a kid and remembered it over a decade later. There are countless people who would love to join our community...if they knew we existed.

I've never seen an ad on YT or Facebook. I've never heard popular YouTubers or Twitch streamers mention smash tournaments. Even in cities that have strong scenes (Toronto) I haven't seen a single poster on campus or out around town. Most people only get involved by pure luck or word of mouth. And because all Smash content and trailers seem to be targeted towards current Smash players, good luck stumbling upon something on YouTube if you've never played or heard about it before.

There's plenty of people who accidently stumble upon our game but don't know what to do next or what they could gain by attending tournaments. Thus they have no incentive to track down other players or tournaments and they continue on with their lives without knowing what they're missing out on. We need a community hub because everybody is segregated into Facebook (often these groups need you to be accepted by a mod to even see what's happening!), Smashboards (seems pretty dead?), reddit, Smashladder, and Twitter. Let's combine assets!

Get a primary site that introduces new players to the game, its most prominent players and events, and all the stories associated with it. Have a tourney calender and scene finder so anyone interested can easily find tournaments to watch or attend. Have live streams on the front page and have a (not Twitch) moderated chat for players to hang out and chat while new players are free to ask questions and see how great our community is. Have a front page link to Smashladder! So many people don't even know Dolphin exists and games like Melee can be played online. Have guides for players of all stages (big bonus if recognizable players post them!) covering different characters, tactics, and a roadmap to improving at the game. Finally, advertise it! Have it promoted on Google, make the site (or any massive tourney for that matter) show up on Facebook feeds. Get popular (Non smash!) streamers and YTers to shout it out. Start by actively advertising your locals around town and on campus! And the more people who take an interest and have a great experience, the faster we will grow.

Games like LoL are massively popular because anybody can easily dowload and play and find as much information and guides as they need. Anyone with a PC can download and play Melee online. You don't need a GameCube controller and a lagless monitor. If they like the game without those they'll be much, much more motivated to track down proper equipment and local tourneys. But it starts with being easily accessible and welcoming to new players. Don't make them jump through hoops.

Basic organization, accessibility, and strong advertising (give non players a great reason why attending a tourney will be a great experience!) will skyrocket growth. If top players and community figureheads who are passionate about growing the scene (Hungrybox, Armada, D1, Scar, Tafo, and more) get on board the results will be tremendous.

Announcement: "Which Regions are the best?", a region rank of Smash 4's regions for the year of 2017.

Posted: 10 Nov 2017 12:07 PM PST

A personal tragedy and a number of other factors have limited by Smash-related activities in the last month, however, I've resolved to continue with my data posts in a possibly huge fashion.

Beyond OrionRank Top 100 2017, which will be released per Freezie & I's work at the end of the year, I will be releasing an article ranking the world's most relevant regions.

Regions being used in the ranking:

United States

-Tristate (NY/PA/NJ)

-The Midwest (ND/SD/NE/KS/MI/MO/IL/IA/OH/IN/WI/MN/KY)

-New England (VT/NH/ME/CT/MA)

-Texas

-Atlantic Southeast (GA/NC/SC)

-MDVA (WV/MD/VA/DE)

-Florida

-Inland & Gulf Southeast (MS/AR/LA/AL/TN)

-Southwest (AZ/NM/UT/CO/NV)

-Rocky Mountains (MT/WY)

-Oklahoma

-Pacific Northwest (WA/OR/ID)

-Southern California

-Northern California

-Alaska

-Hawaii

Canada

-Ontario

-Quebec

-British Columbia

-West Canada (SK/MB/AB)

-Atlantic Canada (NL/PE/NB/NS)

Mexico

-Mexico

Caribbean

Caribbean (Puerto Rico/Dominican Republic)

Europe

-Germany

-Netherlands

-United Kingdom

-France

-Europe - Other (Italy, Spain, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, etc.)

Middle East

-Middle East

Australia

-Australia

Japan

-Kanto

-Kansai

-Kyushu

-Chubu

-Tohoku

-Hokkaido

-Chugoku

-Shikoku

*Okinawa & Northern Canada are declared regions per my methodology but a total lack of international data on J-SNAKE (Okinawa's best player) and any Northern Canadian players (if any exist) means I will not be analyzing them.

Any contributions for top players from your region who may have attended larger events is helpful.

The methodology for how I rank the regions will be provided in greater detail at a later date. However, I take a specific number of a region's top ranked players and use their best placements of the year. There' a lot more to it, but that's the basic idea.

The article will likely be released by the end of the month.

Recording Smash 4 replays using an Xbox One and Windows 10 (Post-Miiverse!)

Posted: 10 Nov 2017 02:46 PM PST

Thanks to Miiverse going down, the YouTube uploader in Smash 4 no longer works as a result of it being tied to Miiverse. Despite owning a capture card myself, I wanted to figure out an alternative method for uploading replays so my friends wouldn't have to send replays to me all the time.

Then I remembered something that I was originally hyped about when I got my Xbox One: it has an HDMI In slot on the back, meaning I could use my Xbox One and Wii U on the same HDMI slot... or so I thought. It was pretty laggy using this, so I never ended up using this feature. Now, however, I found a use for it.

This is where Windows 10 comes in. One of the features included with Windows 10 is the ability to stream your Xbox One straight to your computer. You see where this is going?

By plugging in your Wii U to your Xbox One, setting up your Xbox One to stream to your Windows 10 computer, and using the Xbox One TV application, you can stream your Wii U footage directly to your computer without the need for a capture card! After that, simply use your favorite PC recording software to capture the Xbox window, and boom: easy replay recording!

Here's what the end result looks like. I used NVIDIA GeForce Experience to capture my footage used here, as I do with all my other PC recordings. The software you use doesn't matter, though.

Hopefully this helps some of you out!

Note: Please do not try to play Smash 4 using this method. The input delay is pretty bad.

Port Priority 2: Storylines and Streams

Posted: 10 Nov 2017 05:25 PM PST

Port Priority 2, a major PNW regional, takes place this Saturday! With nearly 200 entrants, strong visitors from the Midwest, and nearly all of the top local talent, it's definitely worth watching.

Brackets
Stream: SatelliteSmash

Here are some storylines to look out for during the show:

Midwest Mayhem

While the first installment in the series brought out SoCal players like falln and Elegant, Port Priority 2 features some of Midwest's most iconic--we'll have Ned (Cloud), JJROCKETS (DiddyKong), Nom (Sheik), and dare2dream (Cloud) in attendance. Ned in particular will be out for revenge, as both Konga and Cacogen have taken him out at majors in the past. How will the travelers fare come Saturday?

The Sleeping Giant Awakens

Cacogen (Sheik), once the indisputable #1 player in Washington, was a rare sight at tournaments for most of 2017. He's proven he hasn't lost his touch by winning Emerald City V earlier this fall, but the scene has leveled up hard in his absence. Can he reclaim his throne this weekend at the biggest home-turf challenge he's seen in a long while, or will the new competition prove too tough?

Young Guns

The PNW has seen an influx of talented youngsters recently, and you can expect them to take some names this weekend. Pokepen (Bayonetta), Pandarian (MetaKnight), Duwang (Mario), Zak (DiddyKong), Mace (Fox), and more are all out to prove that kiddie pools can be deceptively deep.

The Other Side of BC

Canada's presence at Port Priority 2 is more diverse than it's ever been for a Washington event. In addition to the usual kingpins, we'll see Grade (Mewtwo), Lemmon(ZeroSuitSamus), and Shoghi (Roy), some of whom have yet to play stateside. How will these strong newcomers mix with the rest of the region?

PNW Throwdown

Like last time, Port Priority offers a chance for major regions in the Northwest to test their mettle against their neighbors. In addition to the threats noted above, you'll see Konga (DonkeyKong), KOSSismoss (MrGameAndWatch) (WA), Shinkou (Sheik) (WA), Locke (Megaman) (WA), Magister (FemaleVillager)(Charizard) (WA), DAMN. (Ryu) (WA), Pyreeze (Samus) (WA), Big D (Mario)(CaptainFalcon) (BC), Captain L (Pikachu) (BC), Len (Pit) (BC), Kantrip (Sonic) (BC), SilentRain (Mario)(Bayonetta) (OR), Kaito Coon (FemaleRobin) (OR), Viviff T. Great (Bowser) (OR), FedVsRafa (Luigi) (OR), and many more this weekend. Watch for these friendly regional rivalries on stream.

Interested to see how these threads develop? You can find out Saturday at 11:00 AM PT on twitch.tv/SatelliteSmash. On that note, there are plenty of great Smash events taking place across the country this weekend--make sure you open up Multitwitch and support them all!
