NEW CHALLENGER (NCH)

THE LARGEST FIGHTING GAME COMMUNITY ON DISCORD

https://discord.gg/NewChallenger
New Challenger is a PS4/PC/XBOX/WiiU based casual fighting game group made by new players, for new players. The group is comprised of people that range from "I know how to air jump!" to seasoned veterans looking to help out the new guys, and everything in between. New Challenger has two goals:
* To help the newer people grow, learn the game and LEVEL UP!
* Working to make the FGC more inclusive building a mutual respect between games being one of our highest priorities

COACHING

We teach YOU how to play and level up!!
The NCH has high level coaches ready to answer any Smash question you may have! They also volunteer their time to host random 1on1 and group Coaching Nights throughout the week. The purpose of these events are to help people to better understand the basic fundamentals, combos, tech, etc of the game. If you are interested in becoming a Coach, you can DM Vinager#4116 in the Discord.

TOURNAMENTS

Looking for more Tournament action??! We will be hosting NCH events bi-weekly! It's an opportunity for players to get the same tournament thrill higher level players get.

FIGHT NIGHTS

We are a VERY active Discord and someone ALWAYS has a lounge open. We hold regular evening Fight Nights! Fight Nights are an opportunity for players to get together with other members of NCH community in a lounge to play Smash and have some fun.

I'M SUPER GOOD AND I WRECK EVERYONE, CAN I STILL PLAY?
Of course you can!

One of the reasons New Challenger is so successful, is because of people like you who join events and give back to the community by helping other players improve! Fight Nights are a great time for new players to ask more experienced players for help or watch some great matches.

For more detailed information on any of these events and/or what were all about, check out the DISCORD or our WIKI in the links below.

Describe one gameplay element from a previous Smash game, canon or otherwise, to add to Sm4sh to improve it.

My personal choices would be conserving momentum when jumping from a dash (Melee), and miniscule landing lag overall without L Cancelling (SSF2). What are yours?

Fox vs Corrin: at what distance should Fox be standing in neutral (on Final Destination)?

Posted: 15 Nov 2017 08:17 PM PST

Against most sword characters, I can stand about one roll away and threaten a grab or dash attack. Thus the opponent has to risk approaching themselves, or give up a bit of stage with a retreating aerial, which will connect if I choose to go in against it. However, Corrin's max range is so big with instant pin that she can react to my approach if I stand outside it. It doesn't have to be a read. So if I can't go all the way in in one dash, where should I try to stop and wait for Corrin's reaction?

The state of Melee and how I think we can change it

Posted: 15 Nov 2017 10:48 AM PST

I'm someone who is relatively new to the scene. I started watching right before the documentary, but for all intents and purposes, I'm a doc kid. I go to locals and go 0-2 or 1-2. I'm a scrub. But I'm also someone who cares and feel like I see some problems with the scene right now that I haven't seen conversation about.

1) Viewership Allow me to address a few things in regards to viewership. There are three contributing factors to viewership in my mind: saturation, variation, and audience. By saturation, I mean the amount of majors we've had this year is far greater than in the past, so it can be assumed that the audience might just have too much melee. But this point has been beaten to death. Same with variance. The same grand finals have been happening most of this year. Many have blamed Hbox, but the fact of the matter is, in any sport, viewers don't want to see the same thing every time. Take for example the viewership of the NBA Finals, which has had a steady decline. The NBA Finals have had the same two teams duke it out for three years in a row, and the viewership has been slightly down. However, the graph is all over the place, and some years are way down in viewership. Melee could just be having a slow year. It happens. What is important is that we adapt and fix it so we look like the NBA from 2014 into 2015. Finally, there is the issue of the audience. From my experience, many new viewers are high school students and college students. I have several friends that have stopped watching majors in favor of just watching highlight reels from Smasha G or Pengboys. Not to say this is bad, but TO's have to realize that watching a smash tournament is a huge time commitment to your viewer who is in reality, most likely a student with lots of homework, clubs, etc. Also, if you're like me, you live on the east coast and many tournaments will end at midnight and later, which is really inconvenient if you need to get up at 6-7 AM. How do we reach and bring back that audience? I'm not sure. My best guess would be better advertising, but I don't have the first clue. I'm just trying to start conversation about this point which I haven't seen much of.

2) Attendance Attendance to the local smash scene is tough nowadays. You have tournaments like Shine 2017 and Tipped Off 12 that struggled with attendance to the point where their respective TO's have been brought to the brink of their financial limit. Melee in 2017 is a world of netplay and highlight reels. People don't need to attend a tournament anymore to get the experience. I feel there are two ways to fix this. One, TO's need to make tournaments more of an experience. Hype up side-events, try to start things like Mafia, emphasize the social aspect. You need to make people feel they are missing out not on good melee, but on memories if they don't attend. Second, I think top players need to support their local scene more. I think we can take Mang0 as the perfect example of this. He doesn't enter locals, because he doesn't want to win everything, but he still attends for commentary, meets fans, etc. Players like ChuDat who are toxic towards their local scene do nothing but hurt the community. But top players are people too, and they need time to stream and relax so they don't get burned out. So, if you're somehow a top player reading this, I'm in no way blaming you. It's a suggestion on how I think it can help.

3) Drawing in new players I think drawing in new players is the biggest thing right now. From my experience, there are two problems: Getting started is hard and the game is hard. Getting started in melee is more than just learning tech skill. Just the other day, I was telling my friend to play. He decided to and wanted to buy a controller, an adapter, and download everything he needs. But when he went to do everything, he got confused. And I can't blame him. There are two adpaters to choose from, numerous controllers, a million versions of dolphin, several versions of faster melee, and most importantly, it was way too hard to find an iso. I made fun of him at first, "Dude just google Melee NTSC 1.02 ISO." He couldn't find it. So I did the same. The first three links were dead and the fourth was a virus. So, I had to upload my ISO to Google Drive and let him get it that way. The point of this anecdote is to show how confusing it is to try to play. If we want to draw people in, we NEED to standardize controller and game rules. Im talking to you MIOM "counsel of 25." Legalize box controllers and make sure the rules on what iso or what mods to use are universal. Once we figure that out, not only will shopping for controllers be much easier, but also we can host download links for tournament iso's or 20XX ready iso's using tournament mods (assuming UCF becomes standard). I know we've had legal trouble with Nintendo, but Reggie said in an interview recently that he doesn't want to interrupt our scene. If legality becomes an issue, we can appeal to him who is sure to take our side. The point is, we need to make the game easy to find and setup. The next thing I want to talk about is the difficulty of the game. It isn't friendly for new players. I recently took the same friend aforementioned above to his first tournament, Tipped Off 12. He loved it, but one thing I noticed is that he was scared to play with people. He didn't want to lose. Though you may call him a pussy, the feeling is understandable. My solution, Anther's Ladder should begin hosting online brackets for players in the same rank. If a time is set and people know when to log on, they can have some friendly competition with similarly ranked individuals. There are some glaring problems with this plan, namely connection quality and smurfs, but we need to make sure that new players get that satisfaction of improvement. A more realistic solution is encouraging veterans to try and help out those struggling players, but there are resources online for that.

These are the problems I see with Melee, but I don't see a dead game. A see a game with a lot of heart and not much know-how. Part of it is because we don't have the safety net of a big company. But looking at the things our community has produced, Evo donation drive, stunning artwork, and websites like Smash.gg, its a safe bet to say that we have a lot of potential and a lot of growing to do. All this could also be a dry spell, as we have a potential rule change, a new focused Mang0, a Mew2King who has proven he can still win, and many newcomers like Plup. There's also a new documentary coming out (thanks /u/-samox-). As 2017 winds down, we have had a lot of mistakes and failures this year. Its impossible to ignore that. But the storylines and the shift in ranks promises a new wave of challengers next year, as well as smarter, better run tournaments as well as mainstream exposure with more media about us. If you love Melee, try and support your scene, tell your friends, and have fun!

Peabnut's reaction to getting into Boot Camp [VOLUME WARNING]

Vote for Xzax for the Smash 4 BootCamp (read!)

Posted: 15 Nov 2017 09:40 AM PST

Hey guys, its ya boy Xzax and I'm gonna give this a try! I've been playing Smash for 9 years now and I grew up playing this game. My story is one that is pretty unique since its very different from the norm in competitive Smash. When I was young my mom got weight loss surgery, myself and my cousin Vex Kasrani got into competitive Smash since my mom was so sick I had to stay inside to take care of her and Smash was my outlet. Fast forward after a few years of semi competitive play, I was a "cool kid" in high school that played Smash on the side and hid it for awhile until I got arrested for selling drugs at 16 due to needing to provide for myself after a tragic turn of events with my mom and her mental health when I was growing up in Philly. Due to the circumstances, I tried to get good at Smash and not hide it so I can make money legally to provide for myself and make my mom proud. Now fast forward a few years later and I currently live in California and I play Smash for a living! I don't want a pitty vote but I do think its something I've kept quite for a long time but I think my story is one that can be told to inspire and show people that Smash is really diverse and has people from all walks of life. In my Smash career I've gotten some good tournament results, beaten a lot of good players, and have been around for quite some time and an event like this is something I have dreamed of. I'm not the best player in the world but when I have my shit together I'm able to play some good Smash Bros and am able to defeat a lot of top talent and always get close if I don't. Also just as a side fact, over the course of the 2GG saga life I have defeated the most amount of people at their own saga as well ;)

Please help me get into this awesome event and I will not disappoint!

The voting goes down here : https://smash.gg/tournament/smash-4-boot-camp/voting

If I make it in I will:

  1. Eat 20 atomic wings on stream in a chicken suit
  2. Tell stories I have of top players invited already
  3. I will make a vlog type video of my journey to the event and the event itself
  4. Take any requests I see that are really clever/fun
  5. Most importantly TRAIN MY ASS OFF so I do not disappoint!

I personally think MewTwo is the most underrated. He's got a killer dtilt and great recovery but I don't see him played very often.
