Greninja Tech: HydroTrump - Details & Analysis

Posted: 11 Nov 2017 12:19 PM PST

Introduction: What is HydroTrump?

Recently, you might've seen videos on Twitter showing a Greninja hydro pumping an opponent into the ledge then immediately trumping them, causing the target to be trumped in an unnatural way which was then followed up into a dair or fair. When an opponent is forced into the ledge with a windbox and is then trumped, they are trumped towards the stage guaranteeing or allowing for an easier followup. The only characters that can force the opponent to grab the ledge with a windbox then grab the ledge quickly enough to force the opponent to be trumped toward the stage is Greninja and Mr. Game & Watch. In this write-up, we'll be focusing on Greninja and how, what, and when HydroTrump is used.

Performing "HydroTrump"

The process to perform a HydroTrump is easy to explain but difficult to do in-game. To put it simply, you must push the opponent into the ledge then grab it quickly after they grab it to trump them.

It doesn't look too hard, and after some practice on the AI in training mode you can get the hang of it fairly quickly, it's important to realize two key factors that go into HydroTrumping the opponent. Those being: positioning and timing.

Generally, you'll want to have your opponent under the ledge vertically, otherwise, when you Hydro Pump them they won't get blown toward the ledge to grab it. Make sure that when you are Hydro Pumping the opponent is closer to that stage horizontally than you are so that you push them into it rather than away from it.

The position of the opponent vertically matters as well. If they are already close to the ledge when trying to recover, they may either go right through it because you pushed them past it or they may even hit Greninja with their recover move. The opponent can hug the side of the stage to avoid being pushed by the Hydro Pump and possibly end up trumping Greninja instead.

Timing when you'll Hydro Pump and when you snap the ledge is crucial to determining whether or not the opponent will be HydroTrumped and what follow-up will come of it, which will be covered more in-depth in the next section.

Utility and Observations

  • Grabbing the ledge to trump different characters and different timings can cause the opponent to be launched in different arcs, which can affect your followups.

  • Sometimes while trying to HydroTrump the opponent, they may hit you with their recovery just as both you and the opponent grab the ledge.

  • This works best on characters that have linear recoveries, particularly ones that snap to the ledge (e.g. Sheik, Corrin, Wario, Ryu, Charizard, etc.), recoveries that don't auto-snap (Shulk, Cloud, Little Mac, etc) will be pushed but won't grab the ledge and may hit Greninja as well. When trying to Hydro Pump back down toward the ledge, make sure you let go of the analog stick so that you aren't holding down and miss grabbing the ledge entirely.

  • Opponent's can beefy up b to avoid snapping to the ledge and possibly hit Greninja to keep him away from the stage. Often times, they may leave the opponent in a bad position as they could be blown far past the ledge vertically which Greninja can capitalize on.

  • You can follow up with practically any aerial move, however fair and dair are the most practical of them. Bair is possible but won't kill until much later than the other two. Drag down uair is possible but is extremely difficult and can often time result in an SD.

  • You must grab the ledge within 11 frames of the opponent grabbing it to true combo into a dair, 21 frames for a uair, 12 for fair, 23 frames for bair.

  • Recoveries that move more horizontally, like Mario's, can still be HydroTrumped if they hug a vertical wall, forcing them to only move upwards with no horizontal shifting.

Other Thoughts

  • The tech itself is more reactionary-based for its followups. Trying to attempt a dair follow-up requires tight timing and judging how the opponent will be trumped can be difficult. Much of the other follow-ups change depending on how they get trumped as well, but the more you practice it the easier it becomes.

  • The opponent can still buffer a ledge option that won't get them trumped, so this tech mostly works best as a mix-up, when the opponent doesn't expect it.

  • For more Greninja resources and information you can join the The Pond - Greninja Discord Server. The server is very helpful for match-up discussions, improving your play, answering questions, explaining tech, etc.

Don't be afraid to ask questions! Thank you for reading.
