Past Q&A Megathreads

Known bugs (some have possibly been fixed):

See here for Niantic-recognized bugs.

  • New: Shadow-Bans If you have ever used a third-party service (such as an IV checker) that required you to log into your Pokemon Go account, and/or you have ever received a warning message about unauthorized access, you may have recently been "shadow-banned". You can still play the game like normally, but only common Pokemon will show up and you will not see "rare" spawns while others will. You will need to remove any such services, revoke their authorizations, change your password, etc. Roughly a week after doing so, people have reported the shadow-bans being lifted for legitimate players.

  • New in 0.59.1 The Pokédex displays genders for Pokémon you have caught, if applicable. However, code for genders was only added sometime in December/January. Any Pokémon caught/evolved prior to that will have a (randomly assigned?) gender in the Inventory, but will not properly display the gender in the Pokédex.

  • Sometimes while the game is loading it will get stuck on a white screen. This seems to be due to an anti-bot "Captcha" screen that didn't load correctly, and can usually be fixed by restarting the app.

  • There is a bug with the GPS not connecting properly, which results in nearby Pokémon spawns disappearing for a few minutes.

  • The game will randomly crash sometimes. Having the most updated version of the app and the most updated version of your operating system tends to minimize this, but it still happens.

  • There are graphical glitches sometimes where a Pokémon will spawn as a "miniature" version of itself. If you restart the app and are still close enough, it should reappear normally and be clickable.

  • There is a bug sometimes while battling a gym if you don't have a great connection. If you dodge an attack that would otherwise kill you, sometimes the game won't register the dodge and your Pokémon will "faint". Then the game will sync with the server and undo the damage that you dodged, but your Pokémon still shows as fainted and you can't actually attack.

  • If phone time is not set to Automatic, Incense and Lures may not work properly. Fix this by setting time to Automatic (in your phone's Time/Date settings)

Niantic is out of touch not just with the playerbase, but other events of the Pokémon brand.

Posted: 04 Nov 2017 11:57 AM PDT

From what I'm reading all of November's events are in Korea or Japan. However, the rest of the world gets no events, and to me, that makes no sense.

Pokemon Ultra Sun and Moon, the last games of Gen 7, are going to be released in under two weeks. It doesn't make sense that a game which shares the same brand has no cross-promotion or even so much as a mention of them. Considering the games were announced in June, couldn't Niantic have planned to do a short cross-promotion between the Halloween and Thanksgiving/Black Friday events?

It'd be nice to have even just a short (around 2 week) event related to this as a small token of appreciation for the player base, a shout-out to some of the long-term fans of the franchise.

Heck, as /u/Dingsign said below, it would be as easy as increasing spawns of several rares or adding more rare eggs, turning on some lure modules, and calling it an event. I mean that's pretty much what's going on in Seoul right now - why not make it worldwide to coincide with a main series release? Also, for those who would argue that Niantic "only cares about the money", this would also benefit them from a business standpoint - they could sell more super incubator or ball boxes.

I'm not just going to reiterate the point that many people have made how Niantic's out of touch not just with its player base. At this point I can't help but wonder if Niantic is out of touch with TPC too - most likely they would've greenlit a cross-promotion if it ever came up in conversation...

EDIT: To those who I may have unintentionally left out of consideration: I apologize, I was trying to make light of the events of GO Fest to anyone who still remembers it. I've rewritten the post to make it clear that this is a world-wide problem and removed any mentions of a specific area.

EDIT 2: Shortened post, clarified points.

Just a community announcement: Please, this is just a game. Don’t belittle lower level players for asking to do low level raids with them.

Posted: 04 Nov 2017 07:10 PM PDT

I was part of a group in the California Central Valley, and there were a few of us levels 12-28 who would ask for help on low raids because it's fun you know getting to go after a bunch of Pokémon and not just legendaries. Well the "power couple" were these instinct people who were constantly berating us and calling us assholes for wanting to do "stupid shit" like wanting to get a Lapras or a Snorlax. It's almost like they think they run the town.

They kicked me and some others from the group when we said we didn't want to do the 15th or so Suicune raid because it's a waste of raid passes to use it on just one Pokémon. Now that I'm starting a new group to pretty much keep the game alive for me and the friends I made from it they're still trying to follow us around on social media and call us assholes.

Just please make sure when you play this game you do it in good spirit and not make it almost political. When I think Pokémon I think of a fun game with good sportsmanship and competitiveness, like the show and games I grew up with.

Thanks guys and have fun!

UPDATE: while they do have the Facebook Messenger group, I talked to the admin of the main Facebook page and shower her the toxicity. She promptly blocked them. This is good because that's how they got people into the Messenger group. I've now started the "Non-Toxic Pokémon group for those who like to have fun and do good stuff" and welcomed anyone who wants to play for the fun of it. A lot of people from the other group who we're non-confrontational came over because there really wasn't much of an option. Just watch out for any instinct players named "theGqueen" or "Gangrel"

[Discussion] Niantic could benefit so much from communicating with their community

Posted: 04 Nov 2017 05:46 PM PDT

(Disclaimer: This is a bit of a complaint, but I rather call it constructive feedback)

With the apparent release of new Raid bosses, something a lot of people have been asking for, what stood out the most for me was how random it was.

I try to stay on top of updates as much as possible, following the Pokémon Go reddit, the Silph road, Niantic's Twitter, etc etc. and these new raid bosses came as a complete surprise.

..and the dominant feeling is uncertainty.

Do we know if these bosses will replace the old bosses or are they just added to the pool? If replace, will all of the old bosses be replaced, or just some of them? We don't know, because Niantic haven't said anything, and they really should have.

It could have been something so simple as a single tweet announcing that they were planning on releasing new Raid bosses within a near future, with maybe one example from each of the tiers. That would have gotten us prepared and hyped, and would have gotten discussions going which pokémon we would have guessed would have been new raid bosses, and in which tier, further building hype for when the new bosses would be released.

Like this it's just so random, almost frustrating. For all we know it could be some mistake server-side. As I said, the dominant feeling is uncertainty.

I don't want to come of as too negative, and I am glad to see Niantic spicing up and adding new variety to the Raid bosses, but i just really wish Niantic would learn to get better at communicating with the community.

TPC should revoke Niantic's access to the brand and bring PoGo in-house

Posted: 04 Nov 2017 08:00 PM PDT

The recent raid switches to 45 minute timers after an hour of wasted time is just another shining example of idiocy from Niantic. Niantic is out of touch and continues to make decisions that leave us players in disbelief. From bugs to cash grabs, we are continually stunned by classics such as "last ball can't catch the raid boss you spent a premium pass to attempt" to "less time to actually coordinate and execute a raidboss" Meanwhile, spoofers continue to run rampant without penalty, even those who are reported hundreds of times.

Without the Pokemon brand, this game would be a colossal failure, and it seems Niantic is determined to drive it into the dirt. We have propped up this joke company with our commitment to a brand, it is time for that to end.

TPC, please bring Pokemon Go in-house, and make an example of these bunglers.

Niantic really needs to rework Raid suggested numbers, specially ex Raids

Posted: 04 Nov 2017 10:37 AM PDT

No Niantic we don't need 20 people to beat Raikou.
These numbers are:
1) Unrealistic: 20 people will never come together for a Raikou, heck I doubt we'd get more than 15 gathered for a Mewtwo.
2) Inaccurate: most skilled players can beat Raikou within a group of 4-5 people.
Now if - as I suspect - Niantic is releasing ex Raids into gyms that have had 40+ "unique" people play within a month, most small towns will never get an ex raid, even though we can beat it with 7 people.

New bug ? Game becomes untapable (mons, stops, gyms) after visiting a gym

Posted: 04 Nov 2017 12:43 PM PDT

I've been having this glitch for a week now. I think it's related to spinning a gym pokestop. Once I'm done spinning it, I'm back to the roads view, I can move the camera around, go to the menus, etc. but I can't click any pokemon, pokestop or gym. Gotta reload the app.

[Discussion] Am I the only one who never even clicks the "tracker" anymore?

Posted: 04 Nov 2017 11:52 AM PDT

I just realized that I completely tune out that it even exists. If I click it just for the sake of checking, I see that there are pidgeys, sentrets, and rattatas at the nearest pokestops. So? They're everywhere. What's the point of telling me that?

The problem, I realized in the INCREDIBLY rare instance that the tracker has something useful in it, I'd never see it. The exception to this is if it happens to be listed in the top 3 - So that I'd notice it in the little thumbnail in the bottom right while I'm walking around. Therefore, not only is the tracker almost always useless, but even if it was useful I might never see it because I've been trained to just ignore the noise.

Anyone else ignoring the tracker as well?

  • My first Exegg and vile only got one Solar beam off each before fainting.
  • Must dodge rockblasts to get off at least 2 solarbeams for each mon.
  • Machamp and Drag were used cause I had no other stronger grass

Anyone else hoping for better sorting options?

Posted: 04 Nov 2017 09:15 PM PDT

I've been waiting ages now for a better way to sort mons other than simply "starring" them. Wouldn't it be awesome to have a box or folder to sort Pokemon into by raids, shinies, 100 IVs, etc? I can't imagine this would be difficult to add into the game. It's beginning to get frustrating at this point to find everything - even with the search bar. Any of you feel the same about this subject?

Something interesting I noticed about Pokemon Go in Alaska

Posted: 04 Nov 2017 07:09 PM PDT

It takes latitudinal changes into account for winter and summer daylight. The first image in the link below is just a few minutes ago, and the 2nd is a screenshot I took in June.

I thought that was an unexpected neat little addition that they put in.

App sometimes closes when trying to rejoin a battle after all your Pokemon faint

Posted: 04 Nov 2017 07:08 AM PDT

I don't know if this just happens to me or not but you better make sure when your doing a raid you have a solid starting 6 team because almost every raid I do when my pokemon faint the app closes. Sometimes I can get back in properly, sometimes it takes a couple of tries and other times I can't go back in at all..

Does this happen to anyone else?

[Story] Took mom to a tour of an "oldtown" area and got some pokemon go time out of it.

Posted: 04 Nov 2017 09:41 PM PDT

I'm pretty much a rural player. I mostly play pokemon go at my work cause it has three pokestops from my desk and a nearby gym. Weekends I work on my helping my parents fix up an old cabin they bought as a retirement home. Will be making a mini guest home for myself and using it as a main base to restart my life and save up some money to do it (go back to college and all that stuff) So I don't get to tour around much for pokemon go even though I live within a couple hours of Sacramento/San Francisco. Today I toured my mom around the nearby "oldtown" and watched Thor(yes phone off in theater :P ). While touring I flipped/pocketed my phone for battery saver mode and got my egg/buddy walking time in. When she'd want to check out shops she was interested in, I'd spin pokestops and pokeballs. It was a great day not only for doing the good son thing, but also making good progress on Pokemon Go. Got new pokemon, nothing interesting or useful. But still feels awesome.

The team contribution and gym ownership bonus balls are seriously unfair and need to be rethinked

Posted: 04 Nov 2017 09:31 AM PDT

If your area is predominantly one specific team, then you're almost always going to lose out on 4-5 balls everytime if you're in minority group.

What makes this really broken is that you cannot do anything about it. If both you and the other team decides to take down gyms before raids then you're at a disadvantage since they outnumber you. They can be more places at once because of their amount of players and they can be more than one taking down the same gym.

You can't do anything about team contribution. If there aren't enough players of your team then it's just tough luck.

I find that to be a huge flaw. Your performance in a game should be measured based on your effort and skills, not on which team the majority of the players in your area picked during the summer of last year.

Some sad thoughts about this raids change.

Posted: 04 Nov 2017 09:55 PM PDT

Hi, I´m a lvl 40 player from a small town in Brazil. Before the raid system only one friend play here with me. When the raids pop up we start to recruit players and create a community of 60 players to do raids. We tought everything that we know and start to beat every single raid avaiable at the game.

We always have good people to talk and having fun doing raids until now...

This raid system change hits like a bomb here. Everybody is mad. Everybody wants to quit. Let´s listen some quotes:

1) We don´t have interesting pkm as raid bosses from lvl 1 to 4 so we have expect zero players raiding tomorrow.

2) One of the fun experiences for lvl 30+ players is to do lvl 3 raids solo. The fun part is attached to the fact that it´s medium to hard. This new raids are not challenging (yeap, I already see the videos on youtube and it´s easy mode for almost all of it).

I´m so sad that PoGO will return to the early days back to my only friend and I.

R.I.P raid system.

[Question] More rare Pokemon as I level up?

Posted: 04 Nov 2017 09:51 PM PDT

[Question] What do I use to beat tentacruel?

Posted: 04 Nov 2017 09:49 PM PDT

With the new raid bosses, the one that caught MY eye is tentacruel. I don't have a tentacool yet so having a tentacruel would be cool.

I have two questions for this,

1: is this soloable?

2: what are the counters to this?

I'm level 25 almost 26, in case that's serves any help.
