Welcome to EA's Overwatch

Posted: 15 Nov 2017 08:29 AM PST

Welcome heroes! After purchasing Respawn, we decided to take Blizzard under our wing as well. Here is the info on the new Overwatch game coming out in 2018.

  • Old heroes return! Soldier, Widowmaker, Reinhardt, and Zenyatta are ready to play once you buy the game. All addition heroes cost $80 to unlock or you can play quickplay for credits to unlock some of your old favorites like Mercy, Hanzo, and Tracer!

  • Get hero abilities and weapons through lootboxes! Want to sprint with Soldier? Want to unlock the sniping capabilities on Widow's gun? How about the turret for the Torbjorn you just worked 40 hours to unlock? You have a chance to unlock all of these with our lootboxes that are now purchased with credits or by entering your credit card information.

  • Arcade mode is back and better than ever. You will feel more rewarded than ever by winning extra credits in this mode. However, don't forget that there will be a 24 hour cooldown before you can unlock more credits after you play three games.

  • We'll have free maps and characters coming to the game as well! They'll all be available through credits so that you can feel accomplished once you finally receive them.

We hope that you and your wallets enjoy this new game!

Happy birthday Sombra

Posted: 15 Nov 2017 07:30 AM PST

One year ago we finally got the hero added to the live servers with the best and longest ARG ever. She had some hard moments. 6 seconds TL Cooldown, 12 seconds cooldown on Hack and hacked healthpacks that you couldn't see through walls.

But now, after one year we recieved a great skin and her real name. And we still have Somba's voice actress, Carolina Ravassa, doing a ton of great and awesome work within the Overwatch community on her channel "Hispanglosaxon".

Sombra players had a hard time last year. From being "OP" at lauch, to being one of the most hated hero's in the game and even to being called a support.

Now I just want to thank Blizzard, for making such a amazing and well designed hero. With the best highlight intro in the game. And one of the most game changing ultimates in the gamea and the best Zenyatta bully ofcourse.

"Boop".

Edit: Cooldowns

Anniversary of Mei's nerf. A year in F-tier.

Posted: 15 Nov 2017 10:45 AM PST

On November 15, 2016 Mei was nerfed. This was the last real balance change to her (ignoring cross-fire with regards to how ultimate casts work). Currently Mei sits at a 0.34% pickrate in GM, and a 0.7% pickrate overall. I do not believe she is quite as bad as the pickrate might indicate, but she still deserves some help.

For an entire year, she has been F-tier, not even considered a valid niche pick. This is true both for pro play and competitive queue. In this year, we've gone through many different metas, and Mei has not appeared in a single one of them. In the last year, many heroes with better pickrates at all level of play have received buffs, while Mei is left alone.

To fully understand what happened, let's take a look back at Overwatch history...

Season 2 - Mei's brief time as a decent hero

In season 1, Mei was bad. At the beginning of season 2, Mei received several buffs. Improvements to her ultimate, improvements to projectiles in general, and making self-heal give ult charge. After a few weeks, people realize that Mei was not so bad anymore.

Pro's started picking her, on certain maps. Mei was common for situations like defending Hanamura or Kings Row, where you have a nice choke to wall, and rarely to never used outside of those scenarios. She was a true "niche" hero. As always, the pro-meta spread to competitive queue. People were cool with a defensive Mei. Pick her on king of the hill and they questioned it, but she was good enough to work as a general DPS/Off-tank by dedicated Mei players.

There was an issue though. Mei could get her ult fast, really fast, and now it was useful. It was easy to get a blizzard every other fight, and when really hot a Mei player could get one every fight. Blizzard (the company) thought this was a problem, so she got a ult nerf charge the same patch as the global ult nerf charge. The double wammy drastically reduced the number of blizzards Mei could get.

This was not a bad decision. A game of constant ult spam isn't good. The issue is Blizzard nerfed an all ready niche hero without any compensation buffs. Mei was a situational pick while being able to spam her ult. Without that, she became bottom tier. Next to Bastion (without 35% iron-clad) and later joined by Doomfist.

So what to do? I'll suggest two different approaches...

1) A mild buff (like what McCree, Zarya, and Widow have gotten)] I have two possible suggestions, but of course there are many more.

  • Make cyrofreeze increase ammo during it's animation (no instant reload). It's common in a brawl to need to rapidly freeze to save yourself, but when you come out your low on ammo. This would just smooth out her close range righting

  • Add one "pillar" to her Icewall, widening it. Icewall is good at chokes, and weaker everywhere else. Making it wider would improve it in the open, without making it any stronger at chokes where it's all ready wide enough to cross.

2) A rework to the core Mei mechanic that causes balance issues - her left click freeze This has been an issue because Mei's left click is great for new players, but sucks at high levels.

  • Remove the freeze effect - leave the iconic freezing of heroes for her ultimate only
  • Buff the slow effect - stronger initial slow, stronger max slow, longer duration
  • Buff Mei's damage output (left and right click) as needed to balance from there

It would be less frustrating for Mei's opponents. You're never "frozen", so you're always able to fight back. It would take more skill from Mei. Your enemy is still moving, if slowly, so you still need to aim.

Yet a strong slow is still a powerfull CC mechanic, and one no other hero has. Plus, without the easy on-demand stun, Mei could be properly balanced at high levels without wrecking new or casual players.

Particular suggestion, however, are not that important. I threw in some just for fun, but really what we need is Blizzard to actually address the issue. No hero should be absolute bottom tier without being touched at all for an entire year.

And in fact, no other hero has been. There have been other heroes in as poor a state as Mei, but never left untouched for even half as long. So on this sad anniversary, I think all players can come together and agree...

Blizzard, you need to look at Mei!

Please report aimbot cheaters when you see them even if they are on your team

Posted: 15 Nov 2017 09:04 AM PST

Last night i was playing in low silver and i saw a instalock widowmaker 36 level and i thought to myself : " this guy is gonna throw the game isn't he "

NOPE. He destroyed the whole enemy team with headshot after headshot, he had like 20 final blows in one round and he swears this was his main account

the enemy team told me that from his killcam it seemed he was cheating or he was a top 10 widow maker

I doubt he was a top 10 widow maker but at this point and time we were winning pretty hard so i forgot to report him. I now regret that decision so much. What if i play against him? How fun would that be

so point is don't forget to report cheaters just because you win playing with them

As a healer main, this Moira patch will be the best patch yet and I want to thank Blizzard.

Posted: 15 Nov 2017 02:02 PM PST

Seriously, nerfs to Mercy and releasing a healer with strong healing output couldn't have me happier with Overwatch because it's covering my 2 biggest qualms with being a healer main

  1. Not enough healers was beginning to get really dull for me.
  2. I can't express how fucking tired I am of playing Mercy every game. Especially if nobody else wants to heal and I want to play Zenyatta I have an entire team "Yo Zen can you go Mercy?" "This comp really needs a Mercy." Like I'm so happy that not only will I hopefully not be forced into her as much but also have that much more of a selection.

Thanks, Blizzard. Specifically the Overwatch team, you all are great at listening to us!

Edit: after reading the comments I'd also like to add another thank you for on top of all this you're making another one of the healers more viable which is fantastic

Fun Fact: The Overwatch Ultimate indicator has 48 notches.

Posted: 15 Nov 2017 02:50 AM PST

The indicator in the bottom-middle of the UI has 48 individual notches for ultimate indication. This means that, while the yellow fill that wraps around the circle can perfectly represent percentages, the notches themselves cannot. If there were an even 50, each notch would represent 2% of ult charge.
