Weekly Questions Thread - November 15, 2017

Posted: 15 Nov 2017 02:24 AM PST

Greetings r/Civ.

Welcome to the Weekly Questions thread. Got any questions you've been keeping in your chest? Need some advice from more seasoned players? Conversely, do you have in-game knowledge that might help your peers out? Then come and post in this thread. Don't be afraid to ask. Post it here no matter how silly sounding it gets.

To help avoid confusion, please state for which game you are playing.

In addition to the above, we have a few other ground rules to keep in mind when posting in this thread:

  • Be polite as much as possible. Don't be rude or vulgar to anyone.
  • Keep your questions related to the Civilization series.
  • The thread should not be used to organize multiplayer games or groups.

Finally, if you wish to read the previous Weekly Questions threads, you can now view them here.

Arabia's Ability

Posted: 15 Nov 2017 01:35 PM PST

(Civ 6) So something just occurred to me. I'm at work and won't be home for a number of hours so I can't test this myself. Maps of size "tiny" or larger have fewer religions available than civs. What if you disabled "no duplicate leaders" and had as many Arabia's as there were available religions? Would some of them not get a prophet? Would they all get prophets at the start of the game?

CIV 6 - More realistic climates mod?

Posted: 15 Nov 2017 03:04 PM PST

So it might be me, but it feels like a disproportionate amount of the globe is jungle and/or desert.

When I think about continents like Europe, North America, Northern Asia which seem far more temperate - it just seems off to me.

It's weird to start a game where I'm playing as Norway starting near Tundra and then a little ways south you have a ton of palm trees? It seems like the temperate parts of the globe are not well represented...

Has anyone made a mod that makes the world feel a bit more realistic?

Does anyone else feel like they just don't know how to play Civ?

Posted: 15 Nov 2017 07:16 AM PST

I played Civ II for a while as a kid and didn't pick it up again until last year. Maybe I became a terrible gamer somewhere in between that time, but for the life of me I just cannot figure out how to get anything other than a domination victory in Civ V or Civ VI.

Going for a cultural victory? Too bad, your city isn't growing fast enough for you to get the production you need to build wonders!

Want to be the first to put a human on Mars? Sucks to suck, you're always two eras behind Japan!

Oh and by the way, Teddy Roosevelt is going to declare a surprise war with you because Teddy don't give a fcukkkkk.

Am I the only one who's had these experiences? I've been lurking through this sub for a while looking for tips, even drawing out my city maps by hand to gain an understanding of how each piece is interconnected.. ultimately, it's likely I just suck at the Civ franchise.

Civ V Continues to Crash

Posted: 15 Nov 2017 07:14 PM PST

Whenever I try to load a previous game or load up a new game the entire game crashes back to the desktop. I have tried uninstalling civ V and steam, but this has not helped at all. Since I have uninstalled and reinstalled a few times, I have zero mods enabled so I doubt that is the reason.

I am playing on a 2014 MacBook Pro, masOS High Sierra Version 10.13.1, 2.6 GHz i5, 8 GB Memory, Intel Iris 1536 MB (Graphics).

AI Spawning hordes of Great People each turn

Posted: 15 Nov 2017 07:28 PM PST

So I've been having a very, very odd bug. Playing against Mayor's JFK and now that I have eyes on his capital, I've noticed that he's been regularly spawning one Great General and one Great Merchant each turn, resulting in a city completely filled with Customs Houses and a whole bunch of great generals packed so densely some have been forced to embark. Initially, I thought it was a glitch with the To The Glory of God reformation belief, but even after I artificially removed all religion from his cities in IGA, he was still spamming GGs and GMs. I've checked his city with IGA too and he has no technologies, social policies, or buildings that would influence this, so I'm totally stumped here. Any ideas as to what might be the cause?

What should be in the next Civ 6 expansion?

Posted: 15 Nov 2017 07:05 PM PST

When answering, please be specific. Don't just say "diplo victory" but say "diplo victory via world congress, unlocked after someone discovers diplomatic service civic and all civs are met, where players vote on World Leader after voting on World Government".

Here's what I'd like: • Diplomatic Cards that give double envoys to Cultural/Scientific/Financial etc city-states, or culture/gold/production in capital/etc per envoy in city-state. City-states need to be more important as a whole.

• Canal unique improvement (of course), improvements for non-resource Rainforest tiles (like the Jungle Mills mod), improvements that give more housing

• Severe natural disasters triggered by geography, lack of housing, or overmining (all civs should experience this at least once per game); civil wars and secession of cities from your civ when governments change (especially in industrial-modern eras)

• Civs like Mongolia, Inca, Maya, Ethiopia, Samarkand (prospered in Central Asia until destroyed by Mongols); leaders for China, America, England, France, Arabia, India and Japan; Gaelic (Edinburgh?), Balkan (Belgrade?), east European (Minsk/Kiev?), Middle Eastern (Damascus?)

Industrial Start - Civ V BNW

Posted: 15 Nov 2017 07:03 PM PST

This weekend I'm going to play a Civ V game with a bunch of friends, using quick game speed, starting at the industrial age (3 settlers, 3 workers, 6 musketman start). I plan on playing as Poland, meaning I will start the game with 9 social policies.

What should my strategy be? :
Should I rush straight into rationalism, or fill out liberty/tradition right away?
How does starting significantly later in the game affect the tradition vs. liberty choice?
Should I try to get 3 factories out ASAP for ideology, or rush radio to get ideology through modern era?
Should I still generate faith to purchase great people, even though religion is disabled because of the late start?

If anybody has any input at all, I would appreciate the advice. I used to play Civ V singleplayer a lot, but I haven't been able to lately, and I have gotten rusty. Also, this will be my first serious multiplayer game, so I'm in unexplored territory here.

Problem with saving/loading configurations

Posted: 15 Nov 2017 06:49 PM PST

It seems that when loading a saved configuration, it also forces the exact mods you had loaded at the time. This is rather annoying, does anyone know if it's possible to change this?

Mod request, kampung-style improvements for all civs

Posted: 15 Nov 2017 06:32 PM PST

I think that all civs should have a weaker version of the kampung, maybe no housing bonus, or .5 housing and no adjacencies. I just think that there needs to be some kind of improvement that can be built on coastal tiles without resources, and this would work well.

[Civilization V] Are there any other maps/mods similar to World 2014 where the map is already completely filled?

Posted: 15 Nov 2017 06:31 PM PST

Basically the title. World 2014 has the world map with most major countries in their location and I was wondering if there were maps similar to that the map is filled already.

Are there any increased-scale mods? Things that spread everything out while increasing movement speed?
