He told me not to build a house next to his. He didn't say anything about the area above his house.

Don't show each new texture individually. Just release that resource pack.

Posted: 03 Nov 2017 10:28 AM PDT

TL;DR: Releasing all textures at once, so you can get an overal feel of the new look of the new Minecraft, is better than to show each texture separately and be critical of each texture.

As you probably know, Jappa has been showing off quite a lot of new textures lately. Although I was fine with the first few, I don't really like the more recent textures. And I know several other people don't like them either. The netherrack feels way too noisy, and the soul sand's texture is very repetitive. The thing is, basically anything that does not look like the old texture, will look unfamiliar to you, and therefore it will naturally look bad (because of the mere-exposure effect). I'm afraid that this initial negativity will still be there when the textures get released.

So I think it's better if the new textures don't get Tweeted immediately, but that Mojang waits for the entire resource pack to be done, before they get released. Yes, this means that we'll probably have to wait a while, but I think it has several advantages:

  • Rather than looking at every texture individually, players will get the feel of all textures together at once. So rather than being critical over every singe texture you can be critical over the entire resource pack.
  • The changes were not supposed to improve textures individually, but to improve the overal feel of the game, to get all textures in sync. For example, Jeb said three months ago that "_the "new" obsidian makes more sense when you see it in combination with the other texture changes_".
  • When the textures are released in a resource pack, the players can see and use them for themselves. So players can get a better view and impression of the new look of Minecraft, than when staring at an image of it. And it's easier to give good feedback to Jappa if you can actually build with the textures yourself.
  • When players see each texture individually, you automatically compare them with the textures you already know. But the textures should not be compared to the old, but with the other new textures, to see how well they fit in.

So I hope that Mojang will consider this advice, even though it may have been somewhat late: many of the important textures have already been revealed. The only thing I can hope is that the players will realise that it's better to form an opinion once the resource pack has been released, to give a less biased opinion on it. Thank you for reading this.

Are 1.12 mods compatible with 1.12.1 and/or 1.12.2?

Basically if a mod says 1.12.1, will it work on 1.12, 1.12.1 and/or 1.12.2?
