New Stuff In "HotS Complete" App

Posted: 18 Nov 2017 01:48 PM PST

Hey Guys, Just wanted to let you know about some new stuff added recently in the app and ask your feedback on new possible features you would like to see.

I've recently added to the app:

  • Categorized Abilities - Splits each hero abilities into categories. Especially usefull for heroes with 2 kits of abilities (greymane, valeera, chen, leoric...)
  • Ranges+ - Added attack range for every hero and also buffed ranged with specific talents
  • Activatable Talents Cooldowns - Added the cooldown values in a clear format.
  • "Words Of The Storm" - Vocabulary of usefull slang words (android only currently)
  • And of course constant balance updates and new heroes.

Ideas and requests: Draft winrate prediction, heroes stats scaling by level, Heroes Trivia, Maps objectives reminder alarams (manually reset), and more..

Would love to hear what you think about them or if you have any other ideas.

Thanks!

Scouring the /r/StarWarsBattlefront, I've happened upon this comment:

You know there's something completely wrong if ign gives you a 6.5.

Except HotS' situation was, of course, very different from this.

But it still hurts.

I need a hug.

What do you think is worst ability in the game?

Gazlowe's laser is my pick. I love the G man and play him a lot and I find myself pulling out the laser 2 or 3 times a game. It's just so worthless.

Alexstrasza tip: Cleansing Flame is used instantly when in Dragonform.

Posted: 18 Nov 2017 09:12 AM PST

If you are in Dragonform, Cleansing Flame casts instantly, not only that, but it pauses the duration of Dragonform so you can land as a Dragon.

Could be used for Insec shenanigans, to avoid body blocking allies in Haunted Mines or to avoid getting deleted by dive.

Super useful.

Title.

Its simply not possible to play with such ping, and the "server preference" option does not make a difference.

Alexstrasza's talents feel awkward.

Posted: 18 Nov 2017 11:37 AM PST

Credentials: Master League, level 14 Alex, no Stimpack, some Team bonus.

Alexstrasza is a phenomenally fun hero! Her Dragon Queen feels super impactful, her overall healing output is strong, both her Heroics seem to have a place and be strong. Overall, I think the hero nails the design very well. I do however have one tiny issue with the talents.

Having a peek at the popular Alexstrasza games, it appears to be the full E build that is by far the most popular. Personally, there's a couple of reasons I think this build is the "best".

  • It's the only build that synergizes with Dragon Queen, both in CDR at 1 ([[Flames of Fury]]) and in being the only build of which talents work in Dragon Queen ([[Ancient Flame]])

  • It is the only build that provides reliable self-sustain to Alexstrasza ([[Fire Within]]).

  • It is the only build that provides offensive utility in Human Form ([[Heat Exhaustion]]).

Overall, the build gives the best of both worlds: it empowers your trait (which should be your Teamfight Mode) by providing a much lower cooldown, a longer duration, and having talents that empower Dragon Queen Alex.

The problems with the other builds.

  • No synergy with Dragon Queen. This is a major issue because typically you'll want to have Dragon Queen available as often as possible, as powerful as possible. Preferably you don't teamfight without this ability being available, so synergizing with it is very important. Human Alex is not a hero at full power for teamfight. One potential solution is changing the level 20 talent to affect all basic ability improvements,

  • No forms of reliable sustain. Q build forces Alex to be high health and pick up flowers from the frontline (counterintuitive) to maintain that high health. W build just adds to her already bursty self heal on a ridiculous cooldown. I understand that this is a design consideration, but it is another nodge for the E build to be much more effective, especially with the 20.

  • The lack of a real powerspike. The W talent on 16 feels really good, but also quite difficult to get value of in teamfights. It can be a triple Storm Shield on a good day, it also has the potential to be a Probius Shield. This is a risky talent to take because it's out of your control and it's competing with 9 seconds of Dragon Queen, which includes a second W in DQ, or even a third if you use Cleansing Flame. The Q build appears to lack a real powerspike alltogether. 20 armor at level 16 is pretty mediocre. The E build significantly adds to your strength at every level and thus feels much better to play, and it leaves you free to pick DQ duration.

Anyways, those are my thoughts, let me know what you think!

Alex’s Abundance should pulse 3 times over its duration. A low, medium and then a high heal. I think that might negate the counter burst of the enemy team all putting all their aoe into her bullseye

For any of you feeling like average daily quest gold has gone down... you're right. And it's significant. (data)

Posted: 17 Nov 2017 08:57 PM PST

I've got a lot of data and analysis to share, so I'll start right out with the summary:

TL;DR: With the release of the OW quest, more changed than just "another map in the pool". Daily Average Gold (DAG) was higher before than people estimated, and DAG has gone down by more than 100, translating to a loss of 3000 gold per month. This info graphic of my data summarizes it.

Background on the change

This change coincides with the addition of the Overwatch quest (worth 200 gold) that was released with the September 27, 2017 patch. There was some speculation / concern at the time that since this was a new low-value quest that it would dilute the pool and have a marginal impact on DAG. This is based on the assumption that each quest has an equal probability of being selected.

Common Estimated DAG:

Period Formula Expected DAG 21 Days' DAG
Prior to Sept 27, 2017 (800 + 600 + 300*4 + 200*3) / 9 356 7467
After Sept 27, 2017 (800 + 600 + 300*4 + 200*4) / 10 340 7140
Difference 16 327

Actual DAG

It turns out that prior to Sept 27, the DAG was actually much higher. Based on my observations and data, my guess is that the algorithm was something closer to giving each tier of quests (200-gold; 300-gold; 600-gold; 800-gold) an equal probability of being chosen. That's right - together the 600- and 800- gold quests ("high-value quests") accounted for ~50% of all daily quests (as long as you cleared them out every day, of course) leading up to the addition of the Overwatch quest.

Now, this might sound like an exaggeration, but it's really not. Feel free to look at my spreadsheet here. Prior to Sept 27, those two quests literally accounted for almost exactly 50% of mine and a friend's daily quests.

Data Driven Estimated DAG

Period DAG 21 Days' DAG
Prior to Sept 27, 2017 467 9804
After Sept 27, 2017 342 7185
Difference 125 2619

Some Statistics

Data and averages all on their own don't mean much unless we can quantify them statistically. To get an idea for how meaningful the data was, I looked at the situation as a binomial distribution. Basically, for the data set, any high-value quest counts as a "success".

My data consists of a combined (two players) 274 days worth of daily quests, with 172 prior to the OW change, and 102 after. So as not to artificially lower the DAG, I threw out any days where a high-value quest was banked. This leaves me with the following usable data:

Period High-value quests Days %
Prior to Sept 27, 2017 82 162 50.6%
After Sept 27, 2017 20 99 20.2%

You can plug this information in to this binomial calculator and play around with it if you want. I used some tools in Excel (formulas and goal seek) to get to the following 95% confidence probability ranges for getting a high-value quest (also listed in the info graphic from the link at the top):

Pre-OW quest: 43.3% - 58.6%

Post-OW quest: 13.6% - 29.5%

Conclusion

In summary, this is sort of a double edged sword. On one hand, I'm annoyed that Blizzard cut our quest-gold so much in a stealth nerf. On the other hand, the current average is pretty much spot on with what most people expected, while pre-OW the gold we were getting was way above everyone's expectations. So even though we'll feel the full 100 DAG+ drop, we're only down 16 DAG on expectations.

As daily quests are designed around ~1 game per 100 gold, assuming you:

  • play PVP modes with 50% winrate,

  • you only play enough games to finish your quest every single day,

  • aren't using a stimpack,

total gold over a 21 day period (lower range on hero releases) is going down from ~12300 to ~9000
