Theorycraft Thursday - Discuss Builds, Skills, Strategies, and More!

Posted: 23 Nov 2017 01:00 AM PST

Welcome to Theorycraft Thursday, a community-building, regularly occurring thread in the subreddit!

MMO veterans will know that Theorycrafting is the core of many discussions about this genre of games, and ESO is no different.

With the high level of variance in builds, skills, and stats, there's plenty of room for Theorycrafting, and we want to see what you have to share with the community on that front.

Have a build you've experimented with? A particular skill or set of skills that synergize well? A strategy for PvE or PvP that works to great effect? Share it here!

If you're new, you can also use this thread to ask questions about viable builds and skills as well!

As always, please keep in mind our rules on the sidebar, especially the one about 'no personal attacks, callouts, rude behavior, or other such disrespectful content'.

Disagree respectfully and know that everyone has different ideas and playstyles that suit them.

[PC] I understand not having predictable Crown sales, but this bundle is... underwhelming

Posted: 23 Nov 2017 02:06 AM PST

Predictable discounts in the long term is actually a bad idea. I get it. People stop buying at full price, and instead only buy when they know discounts will drop. So, no judgment there. Makes sense to me.

What DOESN'T make sense to me is this underwhelming bundle. 1 mount when a free mount was just given to everyone with Morrowind, scrolls for 2/3 of the mount skills, some XP scrolls (okay, I guess)... and then consumables. Consumables on par with or inferior to the stuff that any competent provisioner can make for pretty cheap. And Crown Soul Gems, which are quite possibly the most worthless consumables in the game, given how incredibly common normal soul gems are.

Like... I'd love to spend money on ESO during Black Friday. I have money set aside for it, in fact. But... there isn't really anything for me to buy. So... I'll go use my ESO money to instead buy other good Black Friday deals that have nothing to do with ESO, I guess. Wasn't my first choice, but, uh. Here we are.

This was a really puzzling sales decision, gotta say.

The is the greatest game!!!!

Posted: 22 Nov 2017 05:27 PM PST

Note: This is kinda long, and I'm really bad at this kind of stuff. But for love and much passion for the game, I feel like something should be said. Please read and let me know what you guys think.

Yes, this is one of THE greatest games I've ever played! With almost 1800 hours in the game, it has gotten me through good times with friends online, and bad times during personal life to help take mind off stress and stuff. Have been an ESO Plus member since around the 10 hour in the game. Have put maybe another $200 into the crown store, and another $100 to buy this game for friends so they can play too.

Not only was there a lot of hours spent here, but I've yet to complete even half the game, quest and achievement related. Originally joining the game through another friend's recommendation of PVP, this is where it's get interesting....

First off, PVE, so much to do!!! Omgosh, so many achievements to get, and some are crazy hard. One the best moments ever was completing vMA for the first time. I literally ran out in my neighborhood during the middle of the night, screaming like an idiot in boxer underwear. LOL, yeah, good thing some of my neighbors play a lot of games, so they didn't think it was too crazy.

Next is PVP. Good PVP, but to become really good in PVP, some of the gear is just a bit intimidating to get (this does not apply to all classes). For example, in order to prepare for vDSA and get a Master Staff, there was a long grind to get the gear and CP needed. The first goal was to get a vMA Lightning Staff, and this took grinding vMA, ever day, 2 runs per day, for 3 MONTHS STRAIGHT!!!! I'm not even joking. It took that much time before a Maelstrom Lightning Staff dropped. Not talking about a bad roll, I'm talking about just the first staff to drop. After that, it took about 2 months to find a good group who wanted to do vDSA. Fortunately on the first completion of vDSA, the Master Staff dropped for me, but my team mates got garbage gear. Felt kinda bad. Then once the Master Staff was used in PVP, oh golly was to useful. Dat KDA was sooooo high.

Changing up to another character. I wanted to test out a build for a warden, using Hunt Leader and Seventh Legion gear. Seventh Legion? Super easy to get. Just buy it off the guild store. Hunt Leader though?

Well that's why I'm here. The last 2 month, I just went through the same crap, trying to get 1h, shield, 2 rings, and 1 necklace of the Hunt Leader set. At my current rate, I'm about to now do 2-3 vMA runs per day. After 2 months, 2-3 runs per day every day, guess what I got towards getting the set? One Hunt Leader necklace in arcane and another in healthy. Man WTF?!?!?!?!?!?

I love this game and all, but seriously tired of grinding PVE to get PVP gear. Some grinding is ok, no problem there. It's part of the MMO life. However, spending hundreds of hours, and months on end just to get a few items, this is just crazy.

Like, for an adult, I spend more time than the usual person putting time in games - just my hobby. It's fun, feels rewarding, and something to waste time on. But this, this crap? Man c'mon ZOS, something's gotta change. Maybe jut a little bit. Not asking to re-invent the wheel. Just change the drop rates or something. What felt like fun, now feels like work. LOL, with all this work, I need a vacation - hence the unsub.

TLDR: Love the game, but hate spending months and months grinding PVE to get PVP gear.

Help me set up a healer for vRoM?

Posted: 23 Nov 2017 02:26 AM PST

Hey, guys, I need some help with a healer build for Ruins Of Mazzatun vet dungeon.

Small introduction first - I mostly pvp, occasionally doing some non-dlc and IC vet pledges. Recently I decided to try shalckle + amberplasm magsorc build, but, sadly amberplasm rings are required for that, and they are hidden behind vRoM grind.

So, I decided to try doing vRoM on vet when it will be the next daily pledge, and run it as a healer to minimise group-searching time.

Unfortunately, I have only a magicka NB healer, which build is not perfect: I'm doing really well in vet non-dlc pledges, since it pulls around 18-25k DPS while healing, but I'm not sure if I can bring that to vRoM, I just don't want to fail my group.

So, please, criticise my build:

I run destro/resto, 5x julliauns, 5x lich(for some sustain to heal if I need it in intense fights), 2x grothgar.

Skills, destro: merc resolve, funnel health, cripple, elemental drain, wall of elements, meteor

Skills, resto: sap essence, refreshing path, mutagen, healing ward, siphoning strikes (or orbs from undaunted?), soul harvest (or rest ult for some bosses).

destro is nirn trait, resto is currently infused (though I can transmute it into anything you advice here, after PvPing I swim in transmutation crystals).

Not sure about mundus, right now its spell dmg, food is blue max HP + max mag.

So, the question is will it be a viable build for vRoM runs? What sets/skills I can change for a reasonable amount of money (no grind, for example it will be very sad to grind SPC to grind amberplasm).

Thank you for reading that!

P.S. If you play PC NA and frequently do vRoM and, moreover, don't mind taking me with you - just let me know.

Swords and Magic - Help a newbie

Posted: 22 Nov 2017 08:47 PM PST

Hi everyone -

I'm kinda getting back into ESO after only playing it for a little bit years ago.

I've been trying to search for a specific build; however, after much reading it seems like it's not a good option at all.

In my mind I wanted a DW sorcerer that uses swords and throws magic. (Similar to a build I had during my dark souls days) but it seems like magic dw sorcs are not a good option.

What would be a good plan B to get me to use swords and Magic? What should I adjust? I'm open to explore other classes, or maybe sword and shield, as long as I have my magic.

DK maybe?

Anything you can help to point me in the right direction to research.

Thanks so much!

Faction Stereotypes?

Posted: 22 Nov 2017 06:33 PM PST

I'm going to be getting the game soon and I want a kind of base, shitpost level understanding of the three factions. what kind of players typically congregate under each banner? what's the social environment of each faction like? Where would players of x type usually be found? Essentially, what's the rundown of each faction as social groups of like-minded players?

Edit for specificity: answers for both PVP and PVE are appreciated

[Discussion] What has changed since the release of Morrowind?

Posted: 23 Nov 2017 01:10 AM PST

Hello /r/elderscrollsonline!

I am sorry if this is against the rules or has been answered too often already. If this is the case could you please link me the thread that I can refer to? Thank you!

On to my question...

I played ESO a lot before the release of Morrowind and knew about all the content in the game and all the different dungeons / trials ect.

Since then I've stopped playing and just decided to get back into the game with the black friday sale.

My Question is: What are the important things that have changed?

  • I've read so far that you can now change traits?
  • Is my sharpened Maelstrom Bow not so rare anymore or can I now make use of my nonsharpenend Maelstrom Daggers?
  • What has changed regarding the endgame?

For builds and guides towards the trials ect. I will look them up on Alcasts site (I think he is still one of the best?) but Im not sure how certain new mechanics work (and what new mechanics there are)

Thank you in advance!

The Most Scary Moment In The Game

Posted: 22 Nov 2017 08:25 AM PST

How do you know you’re ready for vet?

Posted: 22 Nov 2017 04:12 PM PST

I've gotten my first character to about CP 235. It's a Templar healer and I am really comfortable running any dungeon on normal mode. I'm still farming the specific pieces recommended by altcast for his build but have most of my spellpower cure pieces in the right slot. Should I fill out the rest of my pieces with sanctuary pieces before I try a vet dungeon? Also if the piece I have of spellpower cure is the BiS according to altcast's guide, should I improve that item to purple or gold?

Thanks!

Buying Morrowind? What exactly happens to my game now in terms of the storyline?

Showerthought about frost staffs

Posted: 22 Nov 2017 11:16 PM PST

Why wont the destructive touch with frost staff be a chain skill, dk's have their fire chain, essentially making them the "only" worthwhile tanking class. This would make other classes more suited for tanking, while keeping DK's would still be the best ones. Also that destructive reach skill would finally see some use.

Clockwork City furniture motifs

Posted: 22 Nov 2017 04:20 PM PST

Where are people finding these? The drop rate on killed npc's is abysmal and there are next to no lootable items (backpacks, trunks, wardrobes) that actually drop motifs. Barrels and crates everywhere, aye ugh. I haven't found any in pockets after hours of picking them. Anything or place I'm missing?

Making friends with the enemy (Cyrodiil PVP).

Posted: 22 Nov 2017 06:55 PM PST

Today I was working on completing PvE quests in Cyrodiil. I was at the quest hub in Vlastarus, which was under another alliance's control. I had done a few of the hub quests but I was starting to get annoyed at having to kill the alliance soldiers every time I turned in a quest... The last time I did PvE in Cyrodiil the alliance flags in the quest hubs were not in the game. Oh well...

At one point, I had cleared the central flag of the spawns again and went to go about my business but the game insisted I was still in combat. I hastily looked around only to see a player from that same Alliance running about... Instincts kicked in and I fought and fought, ultimately winning out as the victor. I am not all that familiar with PvP so I thought that this person was near by and came to ward off my attack of their flag. Fearing an oncoming sluaghter I quickly grabbed my next quest and high-tailed it outta there.

After finishing the objective (and getting a little side tracked along the way), I returned to Vlastarus to reap my reward only to see the same player I had just annihilated interacting with the quest giver. I studied them for a bit and decided to let them be. They scurried off and I went to turn in the quest, but of course the soldiers were back... I defeated them quickly but again, I am still in combat. I look around only to see that same player again, and my pet summons going to town on them and they were naturally trying to oppose. I quickly unspawned my pet, sheathed my weapon and began jumping in place like a mad rabbit trying to communicate I was no threat. The other player saw this and did the same.

After our neutral exchange we both went our separate ways but we kept running in to each other for the next hour or so and each time we hopped like mad and avoided voilence with each other. This is by no means my first experience of such an exchange amongst enemies in Cyrodiil but I wanted to share here and pose the question to you... What are some of your positive experiences with enemy players in Cyrodiil?
