Remove picking phase from Turbo

Posted: 16 Nov 2017 03:19 AM PST

This is the only gamemode I and many other people play. I don't need an extra 5 minutes for the ban/pick stage before the match starts. It was fine the way it was before.

Valve is such a generous company!

Valve said they will give us only two weeks to prepare for the new ranked system. But they give us much more time to fully prepare! Generosity!

The addition of a pick phase to Turbo mode adds an extra 5 minutes to what are supposed to be 'quick' games

Posted: 16 Nov 2017 01:04 AM PST

Just completely unnecessary. Nobody was complaining about Turbo mode needing a drafting phase.

Magic Immunity / The Yellow Glow is no longer a useful visual indicator.

Posted: 16 Nov 2017 10:54 AM PST

What's happening in this image?

Since the last patch replaced the current magic immunity buff icon with this, it seems decided that a yellow glow = magic immunity.

However, many units can get the same particle effects as magic immunity, but are actually getting an entirely different buff, and for different reasons.

This makes it confusing for new players, and can even mess with the ability for experienced players to immediately recognise what it means.

Currently the yellow glow means:

1) A hero using Black King Bar. This provides magic immunity. This signifies they have used the item, thus you will calculate what the duration is and that it has been put on cooldown.

2) LD's ultimate combined with this Talent. This provides magic immunity. Did he use Battlecry or BKB? Currently there's an icon floating above its head but in a big fight, indicators like that can get buried in the confusion.

3) LD's ultimate on creeps. Battlecry doesn't just apply to the Bear or LD, it applies also to units under his control, which can include Dominated creeps. This makes them magic immune, but then they shares the same visual indicator as...

4) Glyph protection on creeps. Immunity to physical, magical and pure damage, but still vulnerable to any kind of debuff and disable. It makes them look like they have magic immunity but they're actually just immune to damage and can still be disabled. This is two very similar effects, that do entirely different things.

5) Glyph protection on towers. It gives them the same swirly glow as BKB, but they are not immune to magic, they are just impervious to all damage and can still be affected by some debuffs.

6) The courier gets this for its "shield" active. This is where things get silly because the courier is ALREADY magic immune, so it's a symbol of magic immunity for an already magic immune unit that represents something that is not actually magic immunity. What makes this even sillier is that in Source 1 the courier already had a custom effect that looked like a shield, which was fine.

7) Legion Commancer Scepter effect. This is already a pre-existing problem that has been compounded further. It gives her magic immunity, but doesn't signify its from the scepter, so you don't know if Duel is Scepter-based or LC just used BKB and a regular Duel. Especially, this should be a pretty important distinction when you consider that this one yellow glow effect is the only immediate indicator that the Duel is affected by Aghs, and thus influences how other players react. Does LC have Aghs, or did she just use BKB? This lack of clarity can cost seconds when it comes to reacting properly.

8) Golems with a Level 25 talent. They have the golden swirly effect, and like you would expect it means they are magic immune; but unlike Avatar, they are not golden/bigger. What they have is the same effect that is given to creeps/couriers to represent total damage immunity, but it's actually just regular magic immunity.

Essentially the same effect means "immunity", but it radically differs as to what from and why. What makes little sense is that Avatar, the active of BKB makes the hero all big, golden and glowy to signify immunity to spells and one type of damage, this is more flashy than the buffs that indicate complete immunity to damage, which is obviously far more powerful.

Keep in mind that Omniknight's Repel is White, and the Guardian Angel effect on towers is White. Omniknight's effects are from a different source with different rules, ergo they look different because they have different rules, but not so radically altered that they are completely unfamiliar - this is sensible visual design. This is the same for Lifestealer, who has a unique swirly effect on Rage to indicate that it is Rage, and not just BKB.

Fixing this should be simple, really:

  • Black King Bar no changes.
  • Lifestealer Rage no changes
  • Omniknight Repel no changes
  • LD's ultimate should use the "swirly" particles from BKB and Repel, but be a different colour corresponding to LD's colour scheme.
  • Legion Commander needs a new visual effect to represent an Aghanim's Scepter Duel. Giving her the "swirly" effect but making it red/orange should be a good start.
  • (Optional) Warlock's Golems get a swirly colour change (i.e. red/orange) to represent magic immunity which is innate to Warlock and not some other source.

  • Glyph protection on creeps and towers needs an entirely new effect, ideally one that is differently coloured for both Dire and Radiant units.

  • The Courier should get the same new effect as Towers/Creeps get, when shield is active, or alternatively just give him his old shield back which was a simple circle.

There could also be an argument for adding an effect to Blade Fury, Lifebreak and Rolling Thunder, but these are all distinct abilities with obvious telegraphs, so I don't think it's as important.

If Valve is willing to change placeholder icons, they need to go the whole way and have some consistency across the whole area of visual recognition.
