How many Harolds are Heralds? A in-depth statistical analysis

Posted: 25 Nov 2017 04:58 AM PST

This is the question on everybody's mind:

Just how many people named Harold have the rank of Herald?

Let's find out.

But first, a qualifier: I only had reliable name data for the US, and did some estimations on population, age demographics, etc. that I will source below.

Ok, so:

Unique players last month: 11,983,497

US % (via here): 6.57%

US Dota players last month: 787,316

Next, I needed to find all the Harolds runnin' around the US.

For simplicity, I assumed an average US total population of 300 million from ~1990-2007.

Using this age demographic survey, and adding up the amount of Harold's in the US born per year from this site, I got the following:

(If the US had the same age demographic as dota2 players)

10-13 year olds named Harold: 832

14-17 year olds named Harold: 33,299

18-21 year olds named Harold: 102,831

22-25 year olds named Harold: 108,119

26-30 year olds named Harold: 89,043

30-40 year olds named Harold: 43,798

Then, I needed to find out what percentage of american men in this age group are playing dota (for simplicity, assuming that everyone playing dota is male and that all harolds are male)

Roughly 63 million men in the US correspond to the above age range, according to this chart

Which means that 1.25% of men in this age group play dota (this may seem high, but recall that "players" just really means "accounts," since that's all we have to work off of.)

Thus, taking 1.25% of each age range, and adding it up, we find that there are 4723 Harolds playing dota.

Lastly we need to see what % of those Harolds are actually Heralds.

According to opendota's distribution tracking, there are 10,150 heralds of the 169,100 accounts calibrated worldwide, or ~6%. The US makes up 6.57% of players, as previously stated, so that means about .39% of US calibrated accounts are heralds.

Two final assumptions I have to make is that: a) the people who calibrate early aren't better or worse than those who take longer to calibrate and b) those named Harold aren't likely to be better or worse at dota than those named differently.

So now I can take the US % of heralds and multiply it by the number of harolds playing last month dota to find the answer.

Therefore, there are 19 (rounded to the nearest Harold) Harolds that are calibrated as Heralds.

MATUMBAMAN on the recent MMR changes

Posted: 25 Nov 2017 06:03 AM PST

Bug: If you buy Blink Dagger and you took damage up to 3 seconds before that, it comes on CD.

Posted: 25 Nov 2017 03:46 AM PST

This was never the case. This bug was introduced when they fixed the backpack blink abuse. If you're being chased in the trees of a side shop this trick is no longer (at least currently) a thing.

An appeal to Valve into looking to fix the Voice system ingame

Posted: 25 Nov 2017 05:19 AM PST

Right now the ingame voice system is completly broken, in 9/10 times whenever an other person trys to speak i just hear nothing ingame or I just hear someone mumble . I get this currently in every game i play, someone trys to use voice chat, u see the bubble pop up and u hear just nothing at all. I would love if you guys could take a look into that and fix this issue, thanks.

Replace empty Solo MMR: — and Party MMR: — slots on profile with 2 role preferences

Posted: 25 Nov 2017 01:33 AM PST

Since solo and party mmr no longer show on profiles and are replaced with —, there should be the option to show one or two role preferences on your profile for others to see (e.g: Carry and Mid, Support and Roamer, or just Offlane). Not many players choose to show the other options available such as 'Wins' or 'First Match' because it doesn't really mean anything. By allowing players to show up to two of their role preferences may make it easier when the game starts to see which player wants to play what role and to pick heroes accordingly.

Call gg if your whole team's preference are all Mid Mid Mid Mid Mid.....

Edit: this would only be optional, you could still choose to show the other options given or nothing at all.

Zai after losing to an AM

Feels good to be Liquid right now.

I don’t know about you, but I’m playing DotA again because of Turbo Mode

Posted: 25 Nov 2017 05:52 AM PST

To be fair, I have lost every single game so far (7 in a row) but the fact that we can run 5 core lineups (SEA server) without me worrying as to who's gonna buy the courier feels so relaxing!!

Great thinking IceFrog!

Know what would be great? Not being teamed with people I had just reported.

Posted: 24 Nov 2017 08:55 PM PST

At least make match-making ignore those users for a week or so, I don't want to be paired with them. If report is ever going to do anything meaningful (Right away) it could at least do that for me.

We all know this community is toxic because it just comes with the territory of being an E-Sport competitive game, but the least they could do is make reporting someone have an impact right away.

EDIT

For those suggesting this would be abused I don't think you understand what could happen if this was a thing. They could quite easily add an option to the report menu that is simply Avoid Player if said person did nothing wrong other than just not work well with you or play badly. My suggestion was also that it not be forever. A week or two before then having to avoid said player again (If you even run into them or need to avoid again)

This would really help with how toxic teams can be right from the start of a game when people run into people they do not like or that they think are bad so have to talk smack even during selection.

While waiting a few mins is an option that generally works it's not something we should have to do. It's also not a 100% thing because said people you want to avoid may be doing the same thing.

Here is another Sky-scripter+Maphack with proofs.

Posted: 24 Nov 2017 07:15 PM PST

We had a match with a skyscript like a hour ago or so.First thin i want to implement is he auto pastes some russian words. You can check this open dota logs:

Chat:https://www.opendota.com/matches/3580559405/chat

Kill times:https://www.opendota.com/matches/3580559405/log

As you can see whenever he kills someone he writes something russian in all-chat instantly. After watching replay we also found that he also uses autoblock, rune spam(clicks billion times to rune) and ofcourse maphack. He also had a friend partying with him venge.

Venge Open dota profile:https://www.opendota.com/players/326023975

Sky Open dota profile:https://www.opendota.com/players/250646871

As you can see he has 99 games with his friend. He also knows what sky is doing and keep playing with him.He should be punished as well.

Aaaaaannd video:https://youtu.be/dtVuYhHD57I

Edit:Sorry i was sleeping we had no time for record/edit his maphack will share the video soon.

Edit 2: https://youtu.be/hdnFo9MtSzY in there as you can see his keeps targetting titan after he entered fog
