An open .63 request to the devs regarding my favorite mechanic in the game: NOTES!

Posted: 14 Nov 2017 09:41 PM PST

Ok, so I know a lot of you here may roll your eyes at this post and that is completely fair; not everyone's play style is going to be the same as mine. But, I wanted to rant a little bit about my favorite part of DayZ and why I hope the DayZ developers will fix the mechanics required to write and leave notes in items and storage containers (which I believe have been at least partially broken since .59) I will start it off by saying something that may sound a bit dramatic to some, but is 100% true for me:

Notes in DayZ fundamentally changed the way I play/played the game.

When I first discovered you could write notes in game, I thought it was kind of a funny mechanic that would only be embraced by trolls or people only looking for laughs. And in its own way, that is a good way to embrace notes too, because it can help tell the story of a player. What I like most about DayZ is the game's openness to many different play styles. You want to role play? Cool, there are plenty of communities and servers that will embrace you. You want to PvP? Awesome, there are endless areas of the map you can do that. Or, perhaps you want to learn how to survive without scavenging for food? Kind of easy at the moment, but nonetheless you can do that too. My favorite thing to do in DayZ is tell a story, and notes really helped in doing this.

When I realized I could use notes to affect my gameplay, I started embracing them too. I used to leave notes in backpacks, fridges, and tents across the map telling people to meet in Cernaya Polana at a camp I had created. Within days I had dozens of people stopping by and saying hello (some with words, others with bullets). It was awesome to see people reading the notes and heading to this camp, and later on I was able to leave notes in tents to let visitors know about any little bit of info I could write up. It could be about a second camp I was running, or warning people about a cannibal clan nearby, or simply hoping for people to have a good day. Regardless, it wasn't just this server's whitelisted community members reading and leaving notes: it was EVERYONE. First timers, old timers, noobs to the server and long-standing members. Notes allowed for people to connect with groups and people they might not see due to timezones or schedules; or it could be a person's last "hurrah" in their backpack telling their killers to piss off. I've even personally used notes to tell people in game about a library project I set up (leaving the note in the tent), and I can't prove it but, I like to think leaving those notes helped at least a bit in the success of it.

In the end, I think the most important contribution that notes provided was an additional ability to communicate and make a connection with another player in game. Especially when the player models, faces, and clothing is limited in game currently, notes offered another way to tell others who you were, or who's camp you were at, and other personal information. It was this personal connection you could make that helped create fun and interesting stories. As an example, I left a note in a tent in Sinistok one day back in Winter 2015 and a week later I ran into a person in the town that had seen the note a week prior, and had wanted to meet with me and my group to join us due to what he read in our note. He eventually did join our group and he played with us for months, talking to us about everything from DayZ to CS:GO to Brazilian politics (not something I would have known a lot about or researched afterwards if it wasn't for him - shoutout to you Tisick!).

So, what I'm getting at is this: to you, developers, one of my grand hopes for .63, beyond many of the other features you plan on releasing, is that you fix notes for us losers that like to write them :)

Thanks for reading!

ps: I will readily admit now after I have wrote this that I don't follow the status reports' every detail, so if they did mention this feature coming back, I apologize. In that case, read the post as an appreciation for notes one instead!

TL;DR: Watch instead

DayZ Classic “Remastered”

Posted: 14 Nov 2017 06:17 PM PST

Hey guys,

I know that we are all very excited for DayZ to finally go into beta, and the hype is bringing back a lot of fuzzy feelings. Like a lot of you guys, I started playing right when the ARMA 2 mod started picking up and it was by far the most fun video game I've ever experienced. I've definitely been an ARMA/DayZ fanboy since.

With that said, I've always been a little bit bummed that DayZSA became a much more evolved version of the mod. I was so excited when many in the community thought SA would just be a reskinned version of the mod, but the dev team had more ambition than that.

I've gone back to ARMA 2 mod and it's a dead space now, SA is tons of fun but not necessarily scratching the itch, and ARMA 3's DayZ mods aren't really my cup of tea, and I'm still left desiring that classic experience of just looting, fixing up helis, and forming parties through global chat. I know nothing about modding, but I'm hoping that maybe sharing my memories might help inspire the recreation of the 2012 DayZ experience that birthed the genre defining game that we all love.

I know this post isn't really productive nor does it really pertain to DayZSA, but I just felt like sharing my thoughts. Hell, even hearing some of your guys's experiences from that era would be nice.

Cheers, to many more years of DayZ and experiencing the journey together.
