The reason why the MGE logo has never been centred. Posted: 19 Nov 2017 09:41 AM PST As just about everyone knows, the MGE logo is off centred. This isnt another post complaining but possibly a post giving a little insight into logo design and as to why the MGE logo may not be centred. This is just my opinion as an amateur graphic designer. Also, I do believe that valve have done this intentionally. No, its not that hard to create a logo that is centred. I believe the reason why the MGE logo hasn't been centred is because of something known as optical balance. This is where something isn't centred, or mathematically correct but looks better from an optical point of view. A video was made a while back about why the google logo isn't a full circle, and why all the different colours aren't equal and balanced. However, if you make the G logo a perfect circle, and all colours divided on the 45 degree point, it looks awful compared to the actual G logo. The G logo is very balanced and looks great as it is, optically balanced. Now, any of you that have been playing CS since 2015, will remember the first CS:GO Rank icons. The ones, where the corners where shaved off on the right side, instead of a perfect rectangle with rounded corners. This makes the centre of the original logo look a little strange. The optical centre, is a little off the real centre. Now I went in to illustrator and had a play around with a bare template of the rank icon that i made, and if I centred the circle at the back, the logo did look off centre. Also, if you discard the right side of the logo, where the corners are took off, the circle is centred around the rectangle. The double AK however, is centred around the entire icon. This is a way of balancing, but its a really poor way of balancing. However, if the circle was centred, it would look bad too. It more than likely happens that valve just have never changed the blueprints ( Original design ) of the icon since they made the original. The MGE logo could do with some work, now the rank icons are a perfect rectangle, symmetrical and same on both sides, there is no reason for optical balance, so I dont know why valve havent altered it. EDIT : I just thought id add in, that I really meant to emphasise that the AKs and the circle do not look balanced at all. With the old logo, the AKs should be shifted to the more balanced centre, with the circle and stars. With the newer post 2015, and recently introduced panorama icons, the AKs should definatley be centre, with the circle. Why is the circle optically centred and the AKs not optically centred? Dear Dreamhack, please change DH Winter BYOC format Posted: 19 Nov 2017 12:21 PM PST French player here, will be attending next Dreamhack Winter. Dreamhack Winter is the largest BYOC event of the world. I can understand that we have to pay ~100€/player, it cover BYOC tournament, festival, DH Open and others events/animation. But this year format sucks. Single elimination bracket BO3, that means that half of the teams (at most 32) have to pay 500€ and will be eliminated after 1 and half hour.
