Posted: 29 Nov 2017 02:11 AM PST

Greetings r/Civ.

Welcome to the Weekly Questions thread. Got any questions you've been keeping in your chest? Need some advice from more seasoned players? Conversely, do you have in-game knowledge that might help your peers out? Then come and post in this thread. Don't be afraid to ask. Post it here no matter how silly sounding it gets.

To help avoid confusion, please state for which game you are playing.

In addition to the above, we have a few other ground rules to keep in mind when posting in this thread:

  • Be polite as much as possible. Don't be rude or vulgar to anyone.
  • Keep your questions related to the Civilization series.
  • The thread should not be used to organize multiplayer games or groups.

Finally, if you wish to read the previous Weekly Questions threads, you can now view them here.

A new Civ 6 trailer you say? Unleash the history nut!

Posted: 29 Nov 2017 03:06 AM PST

Hello Good people of the Civilization sub reddit.

Back when the release trailer for Civ 6 came out I did an analysis on the themes of the trailer being linked to the themes of flight. Since it was my most successful Reddit post ever, I figured why not do another analysis on this trailer and so here it is.

Here's a link to my previous (much shorter) analysis https://www.reddit.com/r/civ/comments/580zi2/sogno_di_voliare_is_represented_in_the_trailer/

To follow on from the theme of my original analysis, let us first look at just that; themes. Given the name of the exapansion the most obvious theme would be humanities rise and fall, however I think there is a slightly more subtle theme of rising as well, as I will explain

Beginning in the Ancient Era we have Sean and Daughter Sean appearing to be part of a slave class building something. Obviously the term "Empires are built on the backs of slaves" comes to mind for humanities Rise, but look at the social position of Sean and Daughter Sean. Pretty low.

Then the classical Era. Sean is fighting is what is clearly the Colosseum as Daughter Sean looks on from the stands. Gladiators were often slaves as well, but they could earn there freedom and their families were usually treated well. So while the advance to Roman civilization is a rise for humanity, Sean and Daughter Sean have risen slightly as well.

The Medieval Era segment last for by far the longest of any other Era. Longer Eras confirmed perhaps? Anyway, most of this segment we see Sean fighting as either a Mercenary or a common foot soldier, hard to tell which. Daughter Sean starts out just watching but joins the fight later. The first part of this segment can be seen as a rise or a fall, depending on who is winning, but we are seeing the rise of empire building and of warfare done as a profession. In terms of Sean and Daughter Sean, they have clearly earned their freedom somehow, but are still also clearly tied to their lords and lands. Daughter Sean joining the fight can represent women beginning to be more included, or women rising up alongside the men by their own choice. The last part of the Medieval segment is clearly a fall however, with the bubonic plague sweeping in we have all the context we need that this is a dark age and a fall of humanity, as well as a personal fall for Sean who fulfills his contract and once again, dies in every role he plays. It is a harsh reminder that no matter how far an humans rise, sheer misfortune can see them fall again.

Going into the Renaissance however, Daughter Sean as determined to see humanity rise again. We see her on a Galleon or Frigate of some sort helping guide the ship through a storm. Her father may have fell to nature (the plague) but she is determined to rise and fight against nature (the storm). We see her efforts succeed and the ship now in fair weather continue on, perhaps indicating a Golden, even Heroic, age following a Dark age? Regardless it fits the theme of humanity rising even after a fall, and the role of individual humans rising to the challenges of the moment.

Industrial Era has Daughter Sean releasing the French flag from the statue of Liberty to reveal it's face to the American people for the first time. The Rise symbolized here would be easy to mistake as the rise of America, a nationalistic sentiment I would be against, but I think it is actually meant to symbolize the rise of liberty and democracy. It is also a point where our Humanity and Individual rises intersect, as democracy not only was a rise in the function of humanity and society, but was also a great triumph for the individuals who had fought for their freedom and the right to democracy.

Modern Era we have what is clearly a Nazi occupation, though it can't be shown for obvious reasons. This was definitely a fall for humanity, but we see a rise in the resistance group that Daughter Sean is clearly a part of, and in her decision to grab a gun and fight when the Nazi's find their hideout. And remember the theme of a Golden or Heroic age following a dark age? Well that is followed up on nicely in the next Segment.

Which would be the Atomic Era, and what is again very clearly the Berlin Wall. Contrast the darkness in lighting and mood of the previous segment, to the jubilation of this one as Daughter Sean reenacts the famous scene of West German's taking sledgehammers to the Berlin wall and breaking it down. While this is another rise for humanity in the success of international diplomacy against the acts of divisions of people and the anti-humanitarian acts of the USSR in Eastern Europe, there is once again the Rise of the individual as everyday ordinary people celebrate and work to tear down the wall dividing their country. Also let's not forget Daughter Sean is now an ordinary citizen, with all the freedom that affords.

And finally In the Information Era Daughter Sean is seen giving a speech to what could be the UN, but is certainly a political body of some kind. The Rise of humanity to this point should be clear, but let us also look at the Rise of Daughter Sean who, started out as a slave, to have partial freedom earned by her father, to protecting her father, only to have him pass away to plague, to overcoming this and voyaging around the world, to helping found the ideals of the nation of America, to experiencing that freedom stripped away again under the Nazi's, to surviving that and going on to become an ordinary citizen with full rights and still actively protest against things she thought weren't right, to standing in front of important politicians giving a speech on ideals and perseverance. From Slave to diplomat, if that isn't a Rise, I don't know what is.

Finally begin to understand!

Posted: 29 Nov 2017 07:16 AM PST

I have played Civ V quite a bit but never fully understood how to play even better i just always played on lower difficulties and never really even tried harder ones. Now i have switched to Civ VI and really looked up useful information and tips and beginning to learn the games mechanics. At first it was quite a struggle even in lower difficulties (Chieftain, Warlord) because VI is very different that V but after a while i started to get better and tried prince difficulty and won pretty easily and now king difficulty feels manageable ! So just wanted to share my late experience with this amazing game series and i'm looking forward to Rise and Fall!

My dad is a huge civ fan, he plays a lot, and recently has been diagnosed with cancer and he will be home recovering and playing a lot of civ. I bought him civ VI, but unfortunately he can't play it due to the text being too small for him to read. It would be an amazing xmas gift for him if I could find a way for him to play civ VI. If any of you have any idea on how I could get the text bigger (a lot bigger) so he could read it that would be amazing.

You know what would be cool? Being able to produce unique units of captured civs

(IDK if this kinda post is allowed here, sorry if it isn't)

I mean, suppose you take Delhi, its population doesn't just change identity and become Zulu or something, does it? They're still Indians, and it would be cool if you could produce Indian UUs anyway. The Brits had Gurkha regiments in their army irl too

I just experienced the dumbest AI move ever.

Posted: 29 Nov 2017 11:49 AM PST

First, a bit of context:

Today I decided to play a TSL game on a large Earth map with 32 civs. I choose Ethiopia and everything's going good: I get a good pantheon, I settle Lake Vic + Kilimanjaro etc. Then my spearman is scouting near Thebes (Egypt's capital and only city) and I notice that he's moving an unescorted settler. So obviously I attack and take it.

I planned to leave it at that but I have 2 archers, Thebes is at Pop 3 and he has no units. So I take my archers and start whittling down the city's defenses. After 2 lost archers and a bit of help from a scout, I take the city. However I take a large warmonger penalty; as well as taking a capital and killing Egypt, I also had a DECLARATION OF FRIENDSHIP with them. Everyone denounced me, and eventually the first war declarations began to appear. 10 people attacked me, but the only relevant ones were Zulus, Assyria and Carthage. The Zulus can't get through the jungle to my cities, but Carthage and Assyria are poised to take Thebes.

I defend Carthage's attack, but mysteriously Assyria isn't attacking. He moves a siege tower forwards, I attack it, it moves back. After 3 times of this he moves it too far and I kill it. Even though I only killed 1 unit, I try to sue for peace and he GIVES ME A CITY. What? Sure it was only a freshly settled 1 pop city but it had Mt Sinai and 3 luxuries in range, so why did he give it away? He also had the 2nd largest army on infoaddicts so 1 siege tower wouldn't have hurt much. Wtf dude?

Has the Civ 6 DLCs ever been on sale?

Posted: 29 Nov 2017 02:20 AM PST

<rant>

Right now both the regular Civ 6 and the deluxe version (all DLC) are at 50% price, but the DLCs are not. I'd be fine with that if there was an upgrade option from regular to deluxe, but there isn't.

"You should've bought the deluxe version to begin with, smeghead.", I hear you saying. Well, perhaps, but no one really knew what we'd get for that added price at that point. Now, I can understand not discounting the DLCs directly to drive sales of the deluxe version, but to not even have an upgrade option now that they're done with pre-expansion DLCs?

This is going to end up like Civ 5 where I got the original in a strategy bundle, and then got Civ 5 + GK +BNW in another bundle later on because it was 80% off or thereabouts. Still got that spare Civ 5 steam licence in my inventory.

An upgrade for slightly more (say 10-15%) than the original price difference, with same discount as the full games, would give them at least one instant sale (me), and an expansion sale later on. If not it'll be another full bundle on summer sale for next to nothing, and yet another unusable title in my library :/

<rant/>

tl;dr: Please give deluxe upgrade for a tenner.

Civ 6 pacing?

Posted: 29 Nov 2017 11:14 AM PST

I just got 6 in the steam sale. I've only played 1 game, but the pacing feels....pretty bad, compared to 5. It felt like research was faster than in 5, but production was slower. Needing to spend 30-50 turns on a district before you can spend 20 turns building a building that goes in it doesn't seem right to me, it feels really bad. Am I missing some key production trick? Because I might never make the switch if they just changed the feel of pacing.

Veteran of Civ 5/6, Need Tips for Trying Out 4

Posted: 29 Nov 2017 12:37 PM PST

Got Civ 4 for free after the anniversary, so just looking to get some strategy tips and how they compare to 5/6 which I've played extensively on Immortal and Deity.

I'm already familiar with the mechanics from an hour of play, for example Healthiness being the equivalent of Housing from 5/6. The combination of gold and science seems very interesting, so I'm going to try spamming cottages for a Science victory on Emperor for my first game. Combat also seems very interesting with extreme unit type bonuses and stacking capability, compared to anything I've seen in 5/6.
