Official Reddit MIOM Ruleset Nitpicking/Amendment Document

Posted: 03 Aug 2017 07:23 AM PDT

Sup guys, a few of you have noticed that the MIOM ruleset isn't particularly airtight when it comes to phrasing in some places, so let's put together a list of changes that they need to make.

Once there's a good list, I'll submit the entire package as an amendment to the big 5.

How this will work

1. This is for changes to the document, including obvious changes like explaining that there are no bans in a bo5, but excluding non-obvious topics like reinstating Kongo Jungle or legalizing box controllers.

2. Please post written amendments not as top-level comments, but as replies to this comment.

3. Amendments should be posted as follows: write the topic header in **bold**, followed by the contents of each segment that will be changed, with removals ~~struck through~~ and additions *italicized*. For instance, to fix the error where the Double Blind section is labeled incorrectly, you'd write:

3.1.4 Match Procedure

1. Players select their characters. Either Player may invoke Double Blind Character Selection (as defined in Section 3.1.65).

(Note, if you are copying numbering, write the numbering with a slash between the number and the period. ie "1\.". The slash will be hidden when the comment is posted and your numbering will not change.)

Topics that need amendments written

  • Freeze glitch (done)
  • Master hand
  • No bans in bo5 (done)
  • Stalling (done)
  • Wobbling % limit (done)
  • Consistent usage of game, set, match terminology (done)
  • General nitpicking
  • Capacitors?
  • Coin mode for handwarmers? (done)
  • Coaching between grand finals sets? (done)

I'll add to this as people recommend things in the comments.

This smash ruleset structure is NOT a Democractic process.

Posted: 03 Aug 2017 09:57 AM PDT

Here is the link to the doc detailing the structure of the rulemaking body. https://docs.google.com/document/d/14MtvwnEGWXcRytFaTnTtT8ASfojicArU1sveFaXeMmA/preview

To preface this, let me begin by saying that I believe having a unified ruleset that properly represents the views of the community is a very good thing and I believe creating structure to amend the rules is also a positive thing. I don't however, believe this current rule proposal system represents all the main constituents of the smash community at all and needs to be revised.

While the established ruleset body does not have the power to enforce their rules outside of their own events, such a collection of large and prestigious events agreeing to the same rules and an attempt at legitimacy with an amendment process will provide a lot of weight to the ruleset and it WILL be the standard ruleset for the community. As such I want the process to properly represent the main groups in the community and to give those groups decision making power.

The smash community is made up of 3 major components, the TOs, the players, and the viewers. Obviously many of us are part of multiple of these groups, and there are other smaller groups such as casters, and tourney streamers whose voices also matter, but when issues arise, usually, these are the main 3 groups whose needs must be addressed.

A just rulemaking body, has to properly represent its constituents and my argument is that the current rulemaking body does not give the players or the viewers much say in their community, but rather consolidates the majority of the decision making power in the hands of the unelected 5 TOs that make up the main committee.

The "25" currently does not have the power to override any present decisions of the big 5 and indeed no proposals can even be sent to them unless the big 5 have already approved of them by majority vote. While this permits the big 25 to prevent any new proposal from going into place, it also does not allow any new rules to be made unless they are already approved by the big 5. This means that even if the 25 currently disagree with ANY aspect of the current ruleset by a large margin, they cannot amend it in any way shape or form unless one of the big 5 that voted for the original ruleset changes their mind. The big 5 could have agreed to literally anything despite what the community and players think and their current structure doesn't allow the 25 to change it unless they themselves change their mind.

Furthermore, the 25 are appointed by the big 5 themselves. Do the big 5 have the ability to remove people from the 25? How do they even nominate who is in the 25 in the first place? Just their homies or people they know and like? Do each of the big 5 nominate 5 people into the committee who already agree with them?

While I don't have any issues individually with any of the TOs making up the big 5 and do believe they have the best interest of the community at heart, I ask these questions to demonstrate how 2 of the main constituents, the players and the viewers have almost no say as to how the smash community is run and which rules are present at the major events. Unless the TOs decide by their good graces to also include the casters and the tourney streamers into the 25, then their voices will be lost as well. This is NOT a democracy in the slightest. This is an oligarchy of the big 5 TOs who get to decide every proposal which can ever go through while presenting a facade of representation and distribution of power by giving veto and ratification power to the mysterious currently unknown members of the "25" which they will unilaterally appoint. If you disagree with the current ruleset, well tough cookies because even if the majority of the community disapproves of something, we can't change anything unless someone changes the mind of a big 5 TO who voted for it.

I want to hear from you guys, what you think the best ways to represent the major constituents of the community are so that everyone is properly represented in the decision making of the smash community.

Some thoughts I've had are to grant proposal approval power to the big "25" which must have a few reserved seats to represent casters and tourney streamers, and expanding that group to be a larger group with representatives from each of the major smash regions elected by their own people. Under this model, the elected council could override a veto from the TO council with a 2/3rds vote.

Other thoughts are to have a separate council of elected community representatives alongside the TO council which can also propose rules to the 25 which would also be elected or selected by both councils.

The TOs are major figures in the community and put in a ton of work to make our events happen. I am very appreciative of all they do and am friends with many of them. However, I don't believe 5 unelected people should get to decide all the rules for the smash community. I believe the TOs should have an influential role in the decision making process, but not ALL the influence in the decision making process.

These are just some of my thoughts. There are obviously many ways to do this, and I just want to bring up some discussion so that the people in the community can have a little bit more say in what happens in it. I'm interested to hear what you guys think a more representative rulemaking body could look like.

TLDR: The big 5 have almost all the decision making power currently. The 25 don't have the ability to propose new amendments or pass anything the council has not already approved of. The players and viewers of melee are not currently being represented in any way shape or form. The big 5 determines the makeup of the 25, the 25 are not elected or representative of the community or their wishes. This is not a democracy. This is an oligarchy of the big 5 who get to decide all the rules in the community. What do you think?

Posted: 03 Aug 2017 01:00 PM PDT

Good afternoon Reddit! After the massive amount of responses I got for week 1 I decided to post the results early.

Please note that characters ARE ordered within tiers, which is inevitable due to the ranking system

Here is the community voted jab tier list!

NOTES

-No S tiers!

-Doc and Marth tied.

-There is a noticeably large difference between the placings of Marth and Roy, and also with Pikachu and Pichu.

Thank you those who participated, and the next discussion will start within the next 24 hours. It will be all about Forward Tilt!

Is there a complete list of smash slang terms for tech somewhere? can we make one?

Posted: 03 Aug 2017 03:04 PM PDT

ive been watching smash for a while now, but i still keep coming across new "slang" words used to describe very specific situations and tech and i fukin love it... i would like to know them ALL... i found this https://www.reddit.com/r/smashbros/wiki/glossary but it kinda only contains a single one of the type of slang words im talking about (hancock)... what i talking about is stuff like this (I may be wrong on some of these):

the mangle: up b at a weird angle and then airdrift back narrowly avoiding their hit.

getting pinappeled: getting stuck under the stage trying to recover?

johnny stock: ??? ?comboing the whole stock away??

Hancock - Throwing someone off the top of the screen for a kill. (actually never heard this before, but its in the glossary)

recently i heard "he switzerlanded" and i fukin loled real hard cause the guy said it so matter of fact like everyone knows exactly what switzerlanded means, but i had no idea what exactly that means (marth had just sh-naired onstage as a edge guard kinda maybe?)

shit i had so many of these, but now i cant think of any, but you get the point i hope, ill add more if i remember them

so post the best smash "slang" names for tech in the comments or gimme a link pls also where did these come from? why pineapple?

Edit:

Ramen noodles

ramen noodles are infamous for being made quickly, some would say almost instantly. Ramen Noodles is a reaction to something really quickly, like PPMD stealing the ledge just a few frames before Leffen would grab it

Correct me if I'm wrong, I believe it's a term used (more so in melee) when a player grabs the ledge to edgeguard just before the other player recovers back to it.

Johnny Stock

Johnny Stock, named after Johnny "Shoutouts 2 Jesus" Kim is a big combo while at a very high percent disadvantage, usually a hit or two away from death, to win the game or set

i just found another one: whats is "the lukeskywalker" https://youtu.be/L_DDZ4xFYRU?t=155 (wavedash into upsmash?)
