Past Q&A Megathreads

Known bugs (some have possibly been fixed):

See here for Niantic-recognized bugs.

  • New: Shadow-Bans If you have ever used a third-party service (such as an IV checker) that required you to log into your Pokemon Go account, and/or you have ever received a warning message about unauthorized access, you may have recently been "shadow-banned". You can still play the game like normally, but only common Pokemon will show up and you will not see "rare" spawns while others will. You will need to remove any such services, revoke their authorizations, change your password, etc. Roughly a week after doing so, people have reported the shadow-bans being lifted for legitimate players.

  • New in 0.59.1 The Pokédex displays genders for Pokémon you have caught, if applicable. However, code for genders was only added sometime in December/January. Any Pokémon caught/evolved prior to that will have a (randomly assigned?) gender in the Inventory, but will not properly display the gender in the Pokédex.

  • Sometimes while the game is loading it will get stuck on a white screen. This seems to be due to an anti-bot "Captcha" screen that didn't load correctly, and can usually be fixed by restarting the app.

  • There is a bug with the GPS not connecting properly, which results in nearby Pokémon spawns disappearing for a few minutes.

  • The game will randomly crash sometimes. Having the most updated version of the app and the most updated version of your operating system tends to minimize this, but it still happens.

  • There are graphical glitches sometimes where a Pokémon will spawn as a "miniature" version of itself. If you restart the app and are still close enough, it should reappear normally and be clickable.

  • There is a bug sometimes while battling a gym if you don't have a great connection. If you dodge an attack that would otherwise kill you, sometimes the game won't register the dodge and your Pokémon will "faint". Then the game will sync with the server and undo the damage that you dodged, but your Pokémon still shows as fainted and you can't actually attack.

  • If phone time is not set to Automatic, Incense and Lures may not work properly. Fix this by setting time to Automatic (in your phone's Time/Date settings)

Moltres' time in Pokemon Go is almost over, and it's still impossible to catch a raid boss on the last Premier Ball

Posted: 06 Aug 2017 06:07 AM PDT

As seen in several thread on the Silph Road Reddit, it has become apparent it's impossible to catch a raid boss on the last ball due to a huge glitch in the game.

https://www.reddit.com/r/TheSilphRoad/comments/6rkm5l/video_last_ball_on_magicarp_raid_boss/

https://www.reddit.com/r/TheSilphRoad/comments/6rlbc2/bounty_catch_a_legendary_with_the_last_ball/

Yet there has been no word from Niantic, or any acknowledgement from the big name Pokemon Go players, like the Youtubers.

Why aren't more people talking about this?

By buying Raid passes and boxes, we are paying for a broken product.

This is beyond frustrating it you are in the smallest team in your area, sometimes having as little as 4 balls to capture something with a 2% capture rate.

And this isn't even considering how buggy the game has become since the latest update, with dodging charged attacks in raid battles not working half the time.

This needs to be brought to Niantics attention, Zapdos will be here soon and this bug looks like it may be here to stay.

Just like the whites-creen glitch on the nearby screen. Remember when they said they fixed that?

As a casual player, legendary raids feel terrible

Posted: 06 Aug 2017 09:39 AM PDT

I read this subreddit and TheSilphRoad, so I'm certainly less casual than the true average player worldwide. I live in the suburb of a major city, so I have plenty of access to dispersed gyms and stops. I've walked 1100km in game and hatched 733 eggs. I have every Pokémon except Unown, non US regionals, and current legendaries.

I'm also 30 years old, married with two kids, and have a full time job. I remember staying up late and playing Pokémon Red under the my sheet with a flashlight so my parents wouldn't know I stayed up late. I love Pokémon. My approach to this game has been - "Given enough time, you can catch them all." I walked lots of eggs before I finally got an aerodactyl. I walked 200km with a Larvitar. I trust that if I ever get a chance to travel to the other regions, I can get those Pokémon too. But these legendaries...

Lots of criticisms have already been thrown out. Last ball glitch. No in game communication. Arbitrary geographic benefits (e.g. chicago, parts or EU). But I haven't seen these three:

  1. The removal of egg timers sucks. If you don't have a goon squad running around for raids, your best chance of completing a difficult raid was showing up right when the egg spawned and hoping others showed up as well. Without the egg timer, the chance of getting a pick up raid is nearly zero. I can plan my afternoon if I know the gym down the block is going to spawn a Moltres at 3:45pm, but if it just shows up randomly while I don't have the app open I'm SOL. If you live in a spread out city like I do, there is no point of driving around and trying to find active raids unless you have a group. Edit: I appreciate that 2 hours of raiding is better than a timer + 1 hour. Not sure why it can't be both.

  2. There is no indication that the birds will ever come back. This isn't like not getting a Pikachu with a hat, or not getting all 26 Unowns. The idea of having a blank spot on my pokedex that I'll never be able to complete is almost enough to quit the game.

  3. Groups for raids are all jacked up. I show up for a raid at spawn, someone shows up 3 minutes later while I'm already started. He gets put in a second group, and we never know that each other is trying to solo a raid. I wonder how often this happens.

I'm 0/3 on completing legendary raids, as I've never had more than 3 people participating. Maybe I'm just bitter, and everyone else on this sub has 20 birds already. But every post I see that says "I'm 13/15 on catching birds, here are my catching tips" just makes me incredibly sad.

TLDR: Pick up raid groups fee impossible because of the lack of egg timers and group set up. Also no indication that the birds will ever be available again is a bummer.

Edit: For all those suggesting Facebook groups and/or Discord, a cursory search of my town shows several inactive FB groups and no Discord server that I could easily find. So while that process works as a solution for most, its not as simple as "Do the extra work to get on Discord and you are guaranteed success." Looks like I'll give Silph Road Radio a try, not sure why I didn't do that before. Probably just didn't look hard enough.

[Complaint] Anyone else still upset that Niantic nerfed the catch rate of Snorlax, Rhydon and Lapras?

Posted: 06 Aug 2017 08:24 PM PDT

20% to 5% catch rate was a ridiculously significant change. Why couldn't the catch rate change occur for just the raid battles, but be left alone for wild encounters? Just had a 2400 CP Snorlax show up at my front door and couldn't get it with 6 Golden Razz Berries + Ultra Ball (3 were great throws). In the past, you could Pinap even high level Snorlax.

The unnecessary levels in Pokemon Go The moment when all the xp grinding is basically useless is hitting level 38.

Posted: 06 Aug 2017 05:21 AM PDT

I reached level 40 on 16th of April, during the double xp event. It was fun, it was a satisfying moment, but I had to realise, it doesn't have any advantage over players who are only 38 (I use the word "only" because when you hit level 38, you are still 8 million xp short to level 40, which is so so much to go) except for the faces when level <29 players ask my level. That's funny.

But in gameplay it doesn't have any advantage, because (at the moment) you can max out your pokemons on level 38. You don't get better pokemons, you don't get extra stardust, you don't get more rare spawns, you don't get anything extra. Levels are not rewarded in the game with anything exciting (you get some extra stuff but at level 30 you already get all the items currently available in the game).

I don't play the game for the game itself anymore, I don't enjoy catching pokémons as much as I did 4-6-12 months ago. I only play it for the people and the community the game brings together. Pokemon Go is really amazing in bringing people together, I've met dozens of people playing the game, we hang out ever since and some of these get-togethers often do not involve the game anymore.

However it would be really cool to get back in the game for the gaming experience. Of course when (if ever) PVP will be available in the game, that is going to be very exciting for everyone (if they don't screw it up with the pay-to-win logic and you can fight with each other only if you buy something from the shop). But until then, they could introduce a few things which would be exciting for 38+ level players.

To start off the list - Leaderboard: this could lead to a very serious e-penis measuring contest among level40 players. Niantic has proven they track everything you do inside the game, so I think it wouldn't be too complicated to add one more menupoint to the game and show a table with all the players in it with their statistics. It would be fun to see who has the most xp, the most caught pokemon, etc. But to make it possible for lower level players to be at the top, it would be nice to sort by catch rate, excellent-throw rate, flee rate, one-hitter-quitter rate, everything that is not based on how many hours someone played. Of course they should flag spoofer accounts or totally exclude them from the board (and the game...) and also exclude players below a certain number of pokemons caught (I would say 1000).

-Daily challenge: a random task that is given by the the team leader at the first log in of the day. As the level increases, the task is getting more difficult but also more rewarding. •Level5 players: throw 1 excellent, catch 3 pokemon in a row without fleeing, place a pokemon in a gym. You get 500 stardust and 1000 xp. •Level20 players: throw 3 excellent, spin 10 stops, feed 20 times. You get 3000 stardust and 5000 xp and 10 berries. •Level40 players: throw 5 excellent in a row, take down a gym, defeat one 3 star raid boss alone. You get 10.000 stardust and 10 max revives and a raid pass.

(These are just random tasks and rewards, but I think you get the concept.)

-More buddy slots as your level increases: you start the game with one buddy, at level20 you get one more slot, at level30 the third slot, and at level40 you get the last one. One pokemon can be on your shoulder (Pikachu), one walking next to you (Snorlax), one flying next to you (Dragonite) and one baby in your hand (Togepi). The introduction of rare candy and the raids inflated the value of buddy pokemons, but there are pokemons you wouldn't waste the rare candy on and you can't get in raids, but you would like to get candy for it and power it up for various reasons.

-Higher chance of high IV pokemons: I don't think it's fair that 8 players take down a boss, 2 level23 players join the raid with a chansey-blissey squad and they have the exact same chance of getting a 100% tyranitar than those who actually did something to take down that tyranitar. It would be better if the damage output per players wouldn't influence the amount of premier balls only, but also the chance of getting a great/perfect IV raid boss.

-Make level 4 and 5 raids more rare: I don't think it's okay that there are so many legendary raids everywhere. After 2 days of Articuno we didn't move a muscle to get to an Articuno raid which was more than 2 kilometres away from home because in 60 minutes there is going to pop up a new one at the end of the street. I also saw someone in Japan caught more than 100 Articunos. That's insane and reallyreally not okay. It would be better if there would be only 1-2 legendary raids in a certain area, and the timer would be counting down from 24 hours or more (just like in the trailer of legendary birds). And also you could have only one legendary from each one. You can catch as many as you wish, but if you catch the second one the previous one is deleted from your pokemon storage. You always have the chance to catch the legendary if you took it down, so you can always see its CP and this way you can change it to a better IV one, of course after you caught a 100% you wouldn't change it, but you can always run away from it (the candy and dust loss isn't such a big deal and you already got the items for it). Unfortunately this can't be done with the Articuno-Moltres-Zapdos trio anymore, but I hope noone will have a dozen Mewtwo and all the other legendaries, because it would take away the legendary meaning of these pokemons. (Although I'm sure the rate of legendary birds are Niantic's way of apologizing, but I still think there are way too many legendary raids.) Also level4 raid bosses are way too much. I walked hundreds of kilometres to max out my Snorlaxes, and now everyone who caught 10 Snorlaxes from raids saved themselves 150kms of walking. Level4 raids should also have longer timer, so a lot of people can get together when the boss is revealed. Also at the same time all the pokemons should be in the raid boss pool, so you can fight any pokemon currently available in the game, but the better ones would be really rare. There could be also a special raid boss egg, which would contain a regional pokemon, this could also be the regional pokemon that can be caught in the given region in the wild, but all the other can be in these eggs, so it's a surprise.

-Raid bosses should be harder to defeat: it's okay that you can solo a croconaw, a magikarp or an exeggutor. But it isn't okay that two people can take down a Moltres or a Tyranitar, or 5 people can take down a Lugia. It should be way harder, at least 8-10 higher (35+) level would be the minimum who can take down a Snorlax or a Tyranitar, and even more to take down a legendary. I know it is an issue for rural players to find even 2 more people who still play the game. But I don't remember Ash being in the same place and catch all the pokemons in his hometown.

-Motivation drops but CP doesn't: I really like this new gym system, but there is room for improvement. The pokemons we've powered up for almost a year are mostly useless, because it can be beaten by level19 players. The motivation bar is a good idea, but the CP decrease isn't. It's still fun holding gyms, and also useful when there is a raid on a gym which is protected by your pokemon. In my opinion, the CP shouldn't decrease when the motivation drops. You would still have to beat that pokemon three times to knock it out if the gym, but it would be still over 3000 CP, even for the third round. Because in this system a gym can be taken down in 5 minutes by anyone, it is not challenging at all. But this way the gym take over would be more challenging and the 3000+ CP pokemon would be useful again.

-More stardust: Over level40 the xp doesn't matter anymore. Since my final level up, I have gained 5 million xp without using lucky eggs. But I can't use it, it doesn't give anything extra. Instead of xp, it would be better to get extra stardust. For 1 pokemon catch you get 160 xp in average, I would gladly take 80 extra stardust instead of the xp. It wouldn't be neccesarily instead of the xp, it could also be a multiplier on the base stardust which is usually 100 dust for 1 catch. If you have over x thousand caught pokemon then the base stardust is increased with 0.1, after 2x with 0.2 and so on, all the way when you reach 200 dust for every catch. This could increase the motivation for higher level players to catch even more pocketmonsters to increase the dust multiplier. This way the higher level is rewarded again, because the more pokemons you catch the higher level you get.

I think with these changes the motivation for higher level players could be increased, at least I would be way more motivated to play the game furthermore than I'm right now. And also the levels would be rewarding and it wouldn't be just a number, it would be useful to be higher level player just like it is in other games.

I know rural players are going to be mad at me for a few points I made but I'm not the one to blame for the inequality of the game. And also as I said before, Ash didn't catch all his pokemons in his hometown, he travelled a lot for them. And yes it is just a game, not everyone can afford to travel for catching some digital monsters (I never did either), but these are the rules of this game, nobody forces you to play. So being salty about the rules is a bit nonsense in my opinion.

I know it's hard not offend anyone in 2017, but this is my opinion about Pokemon Go in its current state. I think these would be features that could improve the game for higher level players and for everyone in the end. I hope this post reaches Niantic and maybe see some of these mentioned features in the game soon.

The Schuckle potion theory tested.

Posted: 06 Aug 2017 10:19 AM PDT

It was theorized if you fed Shuckle berries while in a gym he may give out potions. I have fed 3 Shuckle 230 berries across 7 gyms, over 5 days. All gym badges were covered, and all berries were fed in various orders at all gyms. I tried 1 of each, 2 of each, 10 of 1, every iteration I could reasonably experiment with. I managed to get 2 Shuckle candies out of it.

I am fairly confident that the potion theory is completely false. While it was a good theory and something neat to implement in the future, it just doesnt seem to be true now.

PSA charge attacks are worth doing

Posted: 06 Aug 2017 04:26 PM PDT

I thought this would go without being said but I just finished a raid with 5 players that insisted that the charge attacks were a waste of time, and only the fast attacks were useful against a raid boss. In their theory it was better to use the fast attack, dodge, and let the mon die rather than use a charge attack (at one point they were down to pidgeottos and the like).

Charge attacks are worth doing. There shouldn't be any question about it. How you have been able to raid so long with this strategy is beyond me, but they hadn't actually beat any of them and refused to listen to recommendations from others.

Please use charge attacks as often as you can. Your clicking doesn't have to be perfect, nor your timing, but please use them.

[Discussion] - Nanab Berry was a mere coincidence

Posted: 06 Aug 2017 11:57 AM PDT

So as many have likely heard, people assumed feeding a Nanab Berry, swapping to Golden Razzberry, and then continuing resulted in a very high chance at catching the Legendary Pokemon.

I have often seen this work mainly against Moltres, and haven't heard much about Lugia. I also completely ignore Lugia because it looks dumb, is weak in it's attack stat compared to other Pokemon of it's typing which is all it's useful for, and Stardust is harder to obtain than rare candies for me.

Now, I want to explain why I think the Nanab Berry trick was just a Placebo effect, rather than really actually being useful. Maybe not the right word, but when people hear of a tactic and it works for them, they generally assume that it's confirmed to work.

Being in raids with large groups, one person always complains that they never catch the Legendary and someone explains the Nanab trick and how it works all the time. Then after a few raids, the person saying it works all the time, sees that it is not the case. This tactic was made popular by ProdigiesNation (who imo is the best PoGo youtuber to follow for raid advice). He even recently uploaded a video saying it likely was a coincidence.

All that being said, if it works for you, continue to do it. But, I wouldn't believe that it is a 100% catch rate, 80% catch rate, or anything like that. Niantic is notorious for stupid bugs, but I highly doubt this is a bug and it likely resulted in people just getting better throw attempts in the long run.

Here is why I think it resulted in becoming popular even though it's just a theory, that in my opinion, has been debunked.

1 - Nanab apparently does have some type of glitch in which it will calm the Pokemon down even after used and the throw resulted in nothing. Another theory, but before this Nanab theory took off, I heard people saying they experience it appearing to trickle down into the other throw attempts.

2 - Most people that struggle with catching the Pokemon (Going 1/17) are people that also miss their attempts, and really only have a percentage higher than 0 about 3-6 times depending on how many balls they received.

3 - Most people don't seem to take their time when throwing their balls at the Pokemon. I often see people leave raids in frustration before I even throw my first attempt. Nanab causes it to fly up less, and stay centered, so people get better throws.

4 - Most people don't have a Golden Ice medal, but have a Golden Fire metal. Ice types, especially in Gen 1, were far more rare than fire types. These medals help out a lot. I'd assume a vast majority of players have the Golden flying type thanks to Pidgey (The true Legendary bird).

5 - The increased catch rate happened around when people started thinking this actually worked.

So those are my thoughts. I don't think there's any coding in the game or glitch or anything that gives you any better odds for using a Nanab over a Golden Razz. Now, hopefully this will help you when it comes to throwing.

Again, check out ProdigiesNation's videos for a better explanation on this.

For the record, I'm 11/13 on Moltres. 1 fled, and 1 I errored out on and couldn't attempt to catch again because the timer on the bird ran out and the gym was attackable again.

The key is to hold the ball in place to make the circle small enough for a throw you're comfortable with hitting to get the bonus. Great or Excellent. Personally I always aim for excellent throws.

DO NOT THROW YOUR BALL WHEN THE BIRD IS ABOVE. IT'S MUCH HARDER TO GET A GOOD THROW ON

If you interact with the ball in any way, or touch it again, the circle gets reset. If you leave it alone, the circle will remain the same size. The ONLY exception is when it is attacking. The circle will remain the same size the entire time. If you spin your curve too early, or too late, the circle size will reset to something you likely didn't expect.

Start your curve and don't rush it too much when the Pokemon starts it's attack animation. All the birds are fairly far away so you don't really have to worry about the ball being deflected. The key is to hit the Pokemon less than 1 second after it's attack animation ends. If you wait too long, it has a chance to attack twice. This does happen, very rarely, even with that second breathing room. I've had some where it attacked, and then attacked immediately without the circle ever appearing and my ball got deflected, so it sometimes does suck in that way.

You also do not have to remain near the gym at all. Once you enter the screen in which you can attempt to catch the Pokemon, you are free to go wherever you want in the world as long as you have internet and as long as you do NOT exit that screen. It was 95 degrees yesterday, and I spend a good 5-10 minutes attempting to catch the Pokemon. Before throwing a ball I drove to my house (about 15 minutes away from the gym), let my phone cooldown a bit so it didn't lag and wiped my hands off so there was no sweat. I then caught the bird on the third or fourth throw.

So to recap, the only reason I think the Nanab berry trick "worked" was because it resulted in more people actually landing their hits on the Pokemon.

If you want to know the REAL trick to catching these raid bosses, it's very simple - PATIENCE. You likely waited a good long time to start the boss. There is absolutely no excuse for rushing the only part that really matters. Unless of course there is an emergency. Patience is key. Once I started taking my time, I started seeing my success rate go above 80%.
