Previous match thread: HGC Western Clash - losers' final :: loser of Fnatic/expert vs winner of GFE/Liquid :: Discussion Thread.

Quackniix, Fnatic:

Horse camp did them a lot of good I'm surprised they decided to go for bootcamp instead this time around.

BadBenny, Team expert:

Should focus more on practicing instead of making boyband videos after losing their last set versus Playing Ducks, but hey – only increases our chances if they don't. Jokes aside, clear favorite for the event but we are going to do our best to take them down!

Can we just make a Hanamura hate thread, sticky it, and leave it open until the map is removed or significantly overhauled?

Skimmy Appreciation - We Need More of Him

Posted: 06 Aug 2017 09:57 AM PDT

I don't know what you all thought about Skimmy's casting and analysis, but I felt like it was a welcome change of pace and insight throughout the Western Clash. His demeanor, thoughtfulness, and wit were never over-the-top. While I am sure he is well respected and known throughout the ANZ regions, this is my first time being able to appreciate his presence.

Personally, I would love to see him as a caster or on the analysis desk at BlizzCon, if possible. Couple him with JHow and Wolf, and the cast of players would be stellar.

Thank you, Skimmy, for a job done excellently well this weekend in Kiev.

"safe to leave" games in QM

Posted: 06 Aug 2017 02:08 PM PDT

If we get a leaver in QM or Unranked, can we please get a system in place that makes the game safe to leave for the remaining players?

Ranked I understand, but forcing people to play out a game that has a leaver from min 1 is really disheartening

Break a Hero without altering their numbers

Posted: 06 Aug 2017 03:16 PM PDT

We haven't had a thread like this in ages, but I think they're pretty fun. I'll start:

--Genji can attack and cast spells while using deflect

--Stukov's Weighted Pustule can spread like his Q does

--Zagara's creep can be selected to use an ability to cast more creep, like in SC2

--OR Zag can cause her Nydus to Burrow when not in use, becoming stealthed and no longer blocking terrain. They restealth roughly 4 or 5 seconds after she leaves that particular worm.

--Kharazim's attack-speed increase becomes a very short-range moving channel, like Azmodan's E but with the same reach as regular Khara auto-attacks

--Probius can, as a third heroic option, gain the ability to build a Gateway with the minerals from minions (like his level 1 quest).

--Due to a bug, re-entering D.va's mech causes her to enter Tychus's Odin heroic instead. It lasts until destroyed.

We successfully drew a HotS logo on China's version of Reddit Place!

Posted: 06 Aug 2017 06:00 AM PDT

Hi reddit, I am a hots player from China, and I want to share with you that after 3 days' effort we finally put a large HotS logo on a China's version of Reddit Place! http://i.imgur.com/8TXmkvu.png

The project has not ended now, you can check it out at http://live.bilibili.com/pages/1702/pixel-drawing

On September 31, a video sharing website, bilibili, started this project. At first we could only build simple text due to lack of painters. This was when we started:http://i.imgur.com/qqg7R9k.png

Luckily more and more players joined us then and we managed to draw a larger Chinese version of Heroes logo on it, and it turned out to be one of the largest work on the canvas. You can check out these two videos to see how it grew up: https://www.bilibili.com/video/av12932538/ and https://www.bilibili.com/video/av12973163/

Disabling Allied Chat Saved Hero League For Me

Posted: 06 Aug 2017 02:17 PM PDT

I've been playing HotS since technical alpha, and have been through basically every phase of the game. Nothing hit me quite as hard as the influx of players that 2.0 brought in. On one hand, I'm really happy for Blizzard, as more players means more money, which means continued content and events. On the other hand, the more players a game has, the more chances for toxicity exist. I'm not alone in saying that, while the player based increased fourfold after 2.0, the toxicity seemed to increase exponentially in Hero League. Long story short? After two seasons of trying to return to Master rank and floundering in plat/diamond, I finally achieved my goal of reaching Master when I won 17 out of 20 games a few days ago. I am now about 1500 points into Master.

When did the winning start? As soon as I disabled allied chat.

I have always been someone who prides myself in being positive in games, so removing that opportunity has always been my biggest reason for not disabling chat. Even now, I will still instinctively type out a "WP" or "thx for the heals!" only to realize I have chat disabled. While my attempts and bringing positive chat to the game are no more, my play feels far above what it used to be. I can now focus 100% on the map, my teammates, and myself. Gone are the days of trying to keep track of the action through a wall of text. Gone are the days of arguing with teammates about strategies. Gone are the days of taking time to mute/report toxic players.

Before it's brought up in the comments, I realize that this is a game about communication. I used to think that chat was essential for helping plan out strategies and giving team advice. Not so. You can plan the game quite a bit in draft (which is not affected when you disable allied chat), and pings can effectively communicate in the game without needing to say anything. Think about it, if a player ignores your pings, do you think they wouldn't have ignored your chat as well? Very little is lost with disabling chat, and personally, I feel like I am a much better player now because of it. I still have bad games like everyone else, but now I can focus a lot better on what I'm doing wrong, because I have no way to publicly pin the blame on other players. If we lose a team fight, I don't feel any need to try to defend myself, because no one will hear me. So instead, I get to reflect on what happened on my own, and that has really changed my way of thinking in this game.

Has this worked for anyone else as well? Obviously disabling allied chat doesn't automatically mean you're going to rank up in Hero League. I know this is all anecdotal. But whether I win or lose, the important fact is that I'm enjoying Hero League now. It doesn't feel like the chore it used to when I was faced with toxic players in almost every single game. I'm having fun again, and I feel like I'm improving as a player. I can't recommend disabling allied chat enough.

TL;DR - I highly recommend disabling allied chat in Hero League. It allows you to focus on your play without distractions, and it has the potential to improve your play as I think it did for me

Silver League has made me truly hate this game

Posted: 06 Aug 2017 12:11 PM PDT

All I want to do is grind, improve and rise ranks to get the hell out of this rank but at least 70% of my games numerous teammates go AFK, draft a troll pick or feed.

As someone who genuinely tries my hardest each game to get better and be with people who I think are my skill, Hero League is a horrible experience. These players don't get banned, they don't get restricted from playing HL and they just ruin everyone's good time and waste 20 minutes.

Something has to be done immediately.

[Art] Garrosh - Castlevania inspiration

Saw a post couple of weeks ago saying that it would be cool to see a warcraft show with the style of the Castlevania netflix show! So after watching it, I decided to try and draw a warcraft character(as well as the next Heroes of the storm character) in that style! Will probably do more in the future with more of my own style!

So, I'm busy playing a Cho'Gall match when I'm randomly handed a mecha-tassadar to play with in QM. that's when it hit me that Mecha-Cho'Gall would be perfect.

At least I thought that it was perfect...before in my search for a cool enough image for this idea I found THE ACTUAL PERFECTLY ULTIMATE CHO'GALL SKINl IDEA

I Actually Like Hanamura's Mechanics, Minus the Hostage-XP-Camping Thing

Posted: 06 Aug 2017 09:05 AM PDT

I always have a kind of dread when Hanamura comes up, but not because I don't enjoy the map, but because other's generally don't. I like the concept because the problem of turning in payloads is a problem around time management. The objectives on each map are different styles of problems to solve, and Hanamura is unique.

  • Cursed Hollow: The easiest problem to solve; get everybody to the obj if you want superior numbers to win. A problem of maximization.

  • Dragon Knight and Braxis Holdout: Figure out out to dynamically allocate teammates for top and bottom portions of the map. A spatial problem on how to allocate resources effectively.

  • Battlefield of Eternity: Like DK and Brax, but with the added complexity of figuring out who's objective is going to finish faster. This is a problem of velocity (allocating space over time); it's not just about who is ahead, but who will finish first and adapting to it.

  • Hanamura. Unlike the other maps, it is primarily a temporal problem to solve; is your pipeline ahead of the other team's pipeline? You have to balance the time you spend contesting versus turning in to shift your payload pipeline ahead of the enemy. (Also, I do a lot or project management-ish things IRL, so I guess Hanamura has some appeal in that regards.)

Unintuitive D.VA mechanics and how they actually work.

Posted: 06 Aug 2017 03:34 AM PDT

D.Va has some of the most poorly worded talent descriptions among the cast. Here are some comparisons of how the description is worded now vs how it actually should be worded to reflect its funcionality:

Bring It On Self-Destruct's Charge amount gained from losing Mech Health is increased by 30% to 39% Charge per 100% of Mech Health lost.

Even in competitive Bring It On is a default pick, but it actually gives only 9% extra charge per full hp bar worth of damage taken. Meanwhile, Fusion Generator can give you up to 15% charge per single W cast.

Expensive Plating Increase Mech Health by 20%, but also increase the cooldown of Call Mech by 15 seconds. This does not decrease the amount of Self-Destruct Charge gained. Self-Destruct's Charge amount gained from losing Mech Health is increased to 37% Charge per 100% of Mech Health lost. Stacks with Bring It On multiplicatively.

So, you gain 30% for your original 100% of hp lost, and then another 1/5 of 30% for the extra hp (which should be 6%, but the game actually gives 7% for some reason). Also, if you take both Bring It On and Expensive Plating, it gives you 48%-50% charge per full hp bar lost. I couldn't figure why there is variation. It definitely isn't depended on your level, but might do something with overkill damage counting towards charge. Tastes like spaghetti code.

Emergency Shielding When D.Va's Mech would be destroyed, it instead gains takes lethal damage, prevent it and gain a Shield that absorbs 210 (+4% per level) damage over 6 seconds.

It's not obvious from the original wording, but the source of lethal damage is entirely negated. Say, if your mech is at 1000 hp and you eat a Pyroblast, you still stand with your 1000 hp plus 210 (+4% per level) shield.

Pew! Pew! Pew! Instead of a single shot, Big Shot fires 3 shots over 0.5 seconds. Each shot deals 50% damage and reduces the cooldown of Call Mech by 8 seconds for each enemy Hero hit.

Not as big as the other examples, but still no reason why extra cd reduction isn't listed. Also, neither Heroic itself nor lvl20 upgrade mentions the casting time (which is longer for lvl20, and the main reason why Pew! Pew! Pew! is not worth picking).

Mages at Western Clash

Posted: 06 Aug 2017 01:47 PM PDT

Mages were more or less a non-factor at the Western clash. In all of the games, each of the main mages (excluding Li Ming) were only played once. Of these (Jaina, KT, Gul'Dan, Chromie), only Chromie managed to win the one game she was played in. Li Ming, the only mage played more than once, went 1 win and 3 losses.

Overall, not only were mages barely even seen, in the times they were picked they went a whole 2 - 6.

This trend has been going on for more or less the whole year for pro play (Mages are more than fine for HL). Only really Li Ming has seen consistent play, and even she seems to be trending down hard. This is definitely a very unfavorable meta for mage characters. With double beefy frontline and/or double support being all the rage, its hard now to justify a spot. Their damage can be very inconsistent at times but they are also exceedingly easy to kill with all the dive out there. It's kinda sad seeing an entire class dying out. It feels like there's less variations of draft now and most drafts being samey. I don't even know how to fix it or even if it should be fixed.
