[BotW] Ok, time for a hasty retre-

Posted: 03 Jul 2017 06:27 AM PDT

I have a habit of not finishing games. Today I finished OoT 13 years after starting it.

Posted: 02 Jul 2017 07:19 PM PDT

I needed someone to talk to about this, so here I am. I started Ocarina when the Zelda Collection was given to me from Nintendo for either registering games, or subscribing to Nintendo Power. I started the game, and throughout the course of some time, I played through... all the way to the shadow temple... where I kept having issues with the wallmasters and eventually the boss.

...so I put the game down, and didn't touch it for several years. Procrastination, other games, life... all kept me from getting around to playing it through. A few years ago, I picked it back up and finally beat the shadow temple. Whatever issue I had before seemed trivial. I made my way to Gerudo Fortress, where I was promptly captured. Over, and over. Not making progress, I lost interest again and shelved it.... until last week.

Thirteen years is a very long time to finish a game. The best part? I remembered nearly everything I had done.

I started BotW, after it came out, but started down the same path of not playing it. Finishing OoT has given me motivation to go back and play it... I can't imagine not finishing another game for thirteen years.... which would put me at 45.

Time is cruel. Play your games.

Thanks for reading this.

Tips/guide for Trial of the Sword [Spoilers?]

Posted: 02 Jul 2017 02:24 PM PDT

If you're a pro, you won't need these tips. If you're someone who depends on armor to get through tough battles (like me...) the following advice might help.

General tips:

  • Any boosts and temp hearts you have prior to placing the sword and starting the trials do carry over. I cooked some durians to max out my hearts and then cooked ironshrooms (can be bought inside the Deku Tree if you don't have any on hand) + a dragon horn for a 30 minute defense boost.
  • There are "Beginning", "Middle", and "Final" trials. After each set, your sword is powered up by 10, you're warped back out to the Deku Tree where you can save, and you have the menu/dialog option to attempt the next set of trials. You are NOT able to keep the weapons/items you picked up in the previous set of trials.
  • Your remaining hearts after beating a set of trials and warping out is whatever it was when you beat it, so don't forget to heal and re-apply your boosts before starting the next set.
  • Don't underestimate mundane enemies like electric keese or a moblin with a spear. It's easy to forget how fragile you are with no armor. The safest way to fight directly is one handed weapon + shield (so you have SOME defense).
  • Usually, if the floor consists of only one miniboss, the "oasis" floor is right after.
  • On each oasis floor, there's at least 1 fairy straight ahead of you. Later trials have 2 or even 3. Crouch and grab the fairies first so they don't fly away, they're literally lifesavers.
  • If you find Hearty items, cook each of them separately.
  • Grab an axe when you can. Not for attacking, but for breaking open boxes and barrels, as they have good durability. These usually contain arrows or food. I've often found the metal crates to be empty, so I generally don't bother with them.
  • Apparently, wood can be cooked and made into "rock hard food" which heals a quarter heart. If you're desperate... you could chop down all the trees and do this.
  • Don't forget about Stasis+. Always useful in a pinch, and can be used to scan a floor for items/dropped weapons.
  • Weapons are relatively plentiful and well-distributed for each subset of trials. Don't load up on junk like branches or low level boko crap, unless you have nothing else. Also, don't try to use up your weaker weapons/bows first, you want to get rid of enemies as fast as possible.

Beginning trials:

  • Red bokoblins and chuchus die to one bomb, so that's a quick way to take them out.
  • The conspicuous chests on the ledges in the room with all the chuchus are not really worth the trouble (a boomerang and 5x fire arrows).
  • Quickest way to take down a Talus is an arrow to the weak spot, then 2-handed spin attack for as long as your stamina will hold out.
  • Oasis floor after the Talus.
  • I had a LOT of trouble with the lizalfos floors. Make use of the lightning rod you picked up from the wizzrobe to shock and disarm them for an easier time.
  • The floor with the raft: don't be tempted to use a korok leaf, just let the wind push you forward, and try to headshot the enemy archers. Once you get to the main platform at the end, I've found it's best to not actually fight anyone directly, just try to knock the bokos and moblin off the platform so they drown. You can try bombs or stasis+arrows (especially when they're on the stairs).
  • On the next floor, the hinox has metal leg guards. I pre-emptively chopped the trees into wood so he couldn't use the trunks to smack me (which does... a ridiculous amount of damage). This is the last miniboss for this set of trials so use your best stuff from the get go. Shoot him in the eye, stasis, run up and poke him with a spear, repeat.

Middle trials:

  • Take care not to knock ALL the bokoblins off the ledges on the earlier floors, or else you won't have any weapons/shields to pick up.
  • For the fire wizzrobes, a quick way to take them out is stasis+arrow when they're NOT standing above a platform. When the stasis wears off, they're stunned by the arrow and fall right down into the abyss. You won't be able to pick up their fire rods, but they aren't that helpful anyway.
  • DO try to get the ice arrows, they're in one of the boxes.
  • For the floor with a single guardian, if you're not skilled at parrying, just glide up to its platform. Hit it in the eye at point blank and wail on it with whatever strong weapons you have. There's also an exploding barrel suspended on a balloon right above it.
  • Oasis floor after the guardian. The next floors are dark, but not difficult to navigate so it's fine. The tough enemies will come to you.
  • If you hear lizalfos, know that they're the fire type, so take them out with ice arrows. I've found if you use stasis, then hit it with an ice arrow, the insta-kill effect does NOT happen, so just FYI.
  • The hinox is not the last miniboss, but it does mark the end of the dark floors.
  • Oasis floor after the hinox. The floors after this are shrine-like.
  • Don't be afraid to use the guardian weapons that drop, there are plenty, and these are the last floors of this set.
  • The last miniboss is basically the same as a "Major Test of Strength" type shrine. Use the columns.

Final trials:

  • These trials tend to be more chaotic, but they're actually not that bad if you don't get overwhelmed and just remember the right strategies.
  • Use bombs on the stals.
  • Stay clear of the metal weaponry that attracts the lightning.
  • Use spears on the electric keese. On that same level, that empty-seeming skull is full of stals that pop up once you go in. Keep your shield up.
  • The stalnox drops three elemental weapons, don't just waste these, you'll need to use them strategically on later floors.
  • Oasis floor after the stalnox. One of the chests has 3 ancient arrows - do not waste these unless you can fight lynels naked without breaking a sweat. There are apparently 6 more ancient arrows in later chests, which helps a ton. But you can make do with 3. The floors after this are hot, so you'll need to equip the fireproof boots in one of the other chests.
  • The pebblits (baby taluses) die to one bomb.
  • Use the ice sword to take out the fire lizalfos.
  • Safest way to defeat moblins directly is: disarm by shocking them with the electric sword, quickly pick up their equipment, and then switch to shield+1H sword.
  • If you've never fought one before: use the ice sword on the igneo talus to make it safe to climb on.
  • Oasis floor after the igneo talus. The next floors are cold, so cook the peppers. If you have another boost active (defense, for example) that you don't want to override with cold resistance, you can equip the flame spear or fire rod.
  • Just like the igneo talus, you can use a fire weapon to make the ice talus climbable.
  • The ice talus is not the last miniboss. You'll fight a blue lynel on the next floor. You can melt the ice block for an updraft and shoot him with one of your ancient arrows.
  • Oasis floor after the lynel. This is the last subset of trials. I think this oasis has three fairies.
  • The next floor has stationary guardians all along the perimeter. Best way is to position yourself along the wall so you're facing one, while a tree or other obstacle is blocking the sight of the other guardians. You'll have to shield parry your way out of this one.
  • Next floor is a single walking guardian. Much easier. Shield parry and win.
  • Next floor is a single flying guardian - I wasted WAY too much time/resources trying to parry it. Unless I'm missing something, there is no truly good vantage point from which you can actually TARGET it, so parrying will always fail. Climb up a tower, jump down, and shoot it with your second ancient arrow.
  • Next floor has three guardians, one of each type. Take out the walker first, then the flying one. This time, you CAN climb onto some of the rubble and parry it, so save your last arrow. Finally, climb up the tower and smack the stationary one at point blank.
  • The last floor. It's a white-maned lynel, a bunch of red bokoblins on horseback, and a static guardian. Easiest way to clear this floor is to get on one of the horses, then jump off to go into slow-mo and use your last precious ancient arrow on the lynel. Then get back on the horse and use a spear to take out the remaining bokos. Defeat the static guardian the usual way.

Phew. Did I miss anything?

By the way, in case you didn't know: the fully upgraded master sword can still lose its charge after extended use. It does seem to last longer though.

In BotW, what normal enemy do you hate the most?

Posted: 03 Jul 2017 02:44 AM PDT

It doesn't matter if the enemy is actually difficult or not - just what enemy do you hate the most?

As for me - I fucking hate lizalfos. The constant jumping back and forth is annoying

Just finished Master Mode on BoTW and by god is Ganon OP | Thoughts and Tips.

Posted: 02 Jul 2017 01:24 PM PDT

Overall first tip to everyone is do 40 shrines first, avoid all mobs and bosses, get yourself the master sword as it is the key to victory.

Make a tonne of elixirs and food whenever you can most mobs can two hit you!

On Ganon if you make two many mistakes early on your best on resetting yourself as he regen's back to 50% within about 8 seconds. If you make too many mistakes your gonna just be in a loop of going from 50% to 30% and back to 50% if your timing isn't good enough, I recommend a bunch of perfect block practice with the sentries around the castle before attempting. Also another Tip carry a bunch of fairy's at all times, they bring you back from death!

Get yourself the Hylian shield and Travel Medallion early on like after the Plateau, the Medallion is simple and the shield is easy just grab the 72 dmg two hand in the cell before hand.

Thoughts: Wasn't as hard as I was expecting the 4 dungeon bosses I did in one go due to having the master sword and only ganon gave me a hard time. It was a more interesting game however I saw myself just avoiding enemies not because they are too difficult but due to the fact that they eat away at your weapons too quickly. I think they need a better balance system for normal mobs, unless this was intentional. Can't wait to get on to the Trial of Swords and other DLC stuff soon, hope any of this helps.

Proof - http://imgur.com/a/eSFOI

Edit: One thing I left out for fighting Ganon is that you can stasis him for some extra hits.

I am almost done with playing EVERY zelda game. I hate Spirit Tracks!

Posted: 02 Jul 2017 11:38 AM PDT

I think some of its sections are just badly designed. They often are repetitive and frustrating. Moreover, the whole train mechanic is terrible because of how slow it is.

Just finishing it because I want to play every Zelda game and this is on my list.

Did you like it?

Question about Master Sword- Post Trial of Sword (Possible Spoilers)

Posted: 03 Jul 2017 08:41 AM PDT

Completed trials entirely, does this mean the Master Sword will never break or "lose power"? Played just a little bit since completing the trials, but haven't gotten the "Master Sword is running low on energy" message. Hoping to God I'll never see that message again

Can someone clear this up for me?

Posted: 03 Jul 2017 08:34 AM PDT

So i'm fairly new to the Legend of Zelda series and have only played 2 of them (Twilight Princess and BoTW) and have been wondering, are the Princess Zelda's from each game different? since i do remember that in Twilight and BoTW they look completely different. Sorry if this seems like a dumb question lol i've been curious since completing BoTW.

Just beat Breath of the Wild

Posted: 02 Jul 2017 02:21 PM PDT

This first Zelda game that I played to completion and had absolutely no issues binging. I've had my Switch since launch and only started BotW three weeks ago. For whatever reason, I've always been put off by the series and could never bring myself to play more than an hour or two, but with this entry, I just couldn't stop.

Everything about this game is so good and just has been a delight to play. All the cool physics stuff that you can find out on your own, the incredible and diverse environments found all over the world, how I was able to set my own pace and ignore the story for 30 hours and just explore, definitely a game well worth all the praise I've seen it get. Can't wait to get into the DLC and don't know how other open world games are gonna compare after this.

Wind Wa(l)ker or BOTW? (Hear me out)

Posted: 02 Jul 2017 11:16 PM PDT

Hey, sorry for not knowing how to spell ut correctly.

I'm not the biggest Nitendo fan out there and I'm going to borrow the Wii U from my brother tomorrow. The only game I've touched on the Wii U is Smash Bros, which is incredibly fun. I've played one Zelda game in the past on the DS, but the ones coming out today are almost completely different in terms of gameplay. I really want to buy and play BOTW after hearing more than positive feedback about it.

So bro told me he has Wind Walker on the Wii U. I wonder, is it good in conparsion to BOTW? Is it worth playing through first? Does it have a similar open world structure to BOTW? Or am I better off playing BOTW first?

I basically have all the time in the world to use the Wii U as it wasn't touched in a year or so. Bro doesn't even need it back (that is unless I buy BOTW probably :p )

So thanks, I'd appreciate some feedback on both games.
