Past Q&A Megathreads

Known bugs (some have possibly been fixed):

See here for Niantic-recognized bugs.

  • New: Shadow-Bans If you have ever used a third-party service (such as an IV checker) that required you to log into your Pokemon Go account, and/or you have ever received a warning message about unauthorized access, you may have recently been "shadow-banned". You can still play the game like normally, but only common Pokemon will show up and you will not see "rare" spawns while others will. You will need to remove any such services, revoke their authorizations, change your password, etc. Roughly a week after doing so, people have reported the shadow-bans being lifted for legitimate players.

  • New in 0.59.1 The Pokédex displays genders for Pokémon you have caught, if applicable. However, code for genders was only added sometime in December/January. Any Pokémon caught/evolved prior to that will have a (randomly assigned?) gender in the Inventory, but will not properly display the gender in the Pokédex.

  • Sometimes while the game is loading it will get stuck on a white screen. This seems to be due to an anti-bot "Captcha" screen that didn't load correctly, and can usually be fixed by restarting the app.

  • There is a bug with the GPS not connecting properly, which results in nearby Pokémon spawns disappearing for a few minutes.

  • The game will randomly crash sometimes. Having the most updated version of the app and the most updated version of your operating system tends to minimize this, but it still happens.

  • There are graphical glitches sometimes where a Pokémon will spawn as a "miniature" version of itself. If you restart the app and are still close enough, it should reappear normally and be clickable.

  • There is a bug sometimes while battling a gym if you don't have a great connection. If you dodge an attack that would otherwise kill you, sometimes the game won't register the dodge and your Pokémon will "faint". Then the game will sync with the server and undo the damage that you dodged, but your Pokémon still shows as fainted and you can't actually attack.

  • If phone time is not set to Automatic, Incense and Lures may not work properly. Fix this by setting time to Automatic (in your phone's Time/Date settings)

How about gaining the other 50 coins through attacking?

Posted: 16 Jul 2017 07:27 AM PDT

it would be great if we could gain coins depending on how long our OPPONENT has been in the gym as well? Like after their pokemon has earned 50 coins (8.3 hours), it can be worth 50 coins upon removing it from a gym. Thus, there is an incentive for attacking again and the players go out of their way to fight pokemon that have been in a gym for over a day while also giving players a reason to leave others alone if they haven't been in the gym very long. Also this would be a reward for those who rather only fight a gym

With this people can easily get 50 coins a day, or even 100 if they're knocked out a defending gym as well. :) that would be a nice perk.

EDIT: Gaining dust depending on how long you've been in a gym would be nice too, which we would earn after being knocked out of a gym. It would be even better if we could also gain dust upon removing someone out of a gym that has also been there past a certain time as well. I'm hoping a max at 2500 dust for the defender, and 2500 dust for the attacker if their pokemon has been in the gym for 8.3 hours. But if Niantic is feeling generous, I'd really love 5000 dust for defending and 5000 for attacking to be the new cap.

If we could have this, I believe stagnation would be non-existent.

I Caught A Wild Ampharos!

Posted: 16 Jul 2017 05:24 PM PDT

I'm pretty excited about this, not gonna lie. I'm a SUPER rural player (nearest Pokéstop is a 10 minute drive away) and I was just going about my day, taking my route home from town when he popped up at a random bar! Not on the radar at all!

After doing my "missing Pokémon" poll (which you can see the results of here cough shameless plug cough) and finding that Ampharos is the second most elusive Pokémon behind Unown, I'm pretty ecstatic about this, especially being a rural player! The rarest catch I had before this was an Ursaring 😂

It's only a 499CP but I'm more of a completionist than a competitive battler anyway so it's not devastating :P I wish you all luck on your hunting! Maybe what you need will show up when you least expect it :)

[Story]My fav solo raid

Posted: 16 Jul 2017 12:50 PM PDT

Hello, r/pokemongo. I just got home from the best solo raid I have ever been to. Let's get to it.

Today, me and my girlfriend came back from my parents' home to our rented flat, which is where I write from. The atmosphere of the day and leaving my parents after two days of being together left me sad like a 10Cp Dunsparce. I noticed a raid was going to start soon, so I said that I was going to be back in 15 minutes or so.

As I reached the spot the egg hatched. It was a Weezing. Well, it's not like I will have time to chase two raids tomorrow, so I sat on the bench and started picking my team. Halfway through, an old lady appeared and asked me if she can sit next to me. So we started talking and the raid had started. I failed miserably on the first fight with Weezing (turns out steel moves aren't SE against Poison, so even my SW/H Dnite didn't do much good). I timed out on the next two, still not knowing how. I wasn't even dodging though, the conversation with an old lady was more important. Turns out she was living here for 30+ years (as her husband was dead for 18 years already and they have been living here before), she was living with her grandson who is 35 now. She was interested in PoGo, asking what was on the screen, who was I playing with and how do I find people to play with. She was interested in some Pokemon and liked some of them, especially Cloyster got her attention. She didn't go out lately due to her health condition, and she was glad to talk to somebody.

Overall, we spent thirty minutes or so talking. With an actual stranger, an old lady, in my country - that's actually the first time I have had such an interaction. When I was saying goodbye, she even said that she wishes she had a grandson like me. After this whole shitty day, I'm still smiling.

As to the raid, I got a single rare candy, 3 revives and 4 golden razz berries. I don't even count the Weezing, as it went straight to the Professor's big white blender ranch. Screw those rewards, this was my favourite raid.

TL;DR: met a 90LVL+ lady while raiding and we were talking throughout the whole raid. She liked PoGo, but she didn't download.

[Idea] Bring back training but make it award stardust

Posted: 16 Jul 2017 01:55 PM PDT

Fighting through the defenders at a friendly gym should, rather than giving the gym prestige (thank god prestiging is dead), award you with stardust! I'm thinking 50 stardust per defeated Pokemon, give or take. Plus, it'd give incentive to stocking up on potions in low turnover areas - if your team is dominant, you can get stardust!

I actually REALLY like the new gyms

Posted: 16 Jul 2017 11:48 AM PDT

There's a lot of hate for the new gym system, but I've grown to love it. It's created a new strategic way of playing that has livened up the game for me.

Now you have to play smart: putting in some big defenders, other small cp critters, to try and second guess how long they'll last. And it gives the weirdo small cp Pokémon a chance to shine!

Niantic needs to enable nearby and radar switch

Posted: 16 Jul 2017 05:52 AM PDT

I don't usually rant and as someone who barely played during the winter months due to time and temperature I probably shouldn't. But where I live there's not about 3 spawns in the entire city for dratinis. None of them are at pokestops. Recently I walked past one of these spawns and I happened to check my phone in the very split second where dratini appeared on the perimeter of my circle thing and +disappeared again. If I hadn't seen it I might just have walked past it assuming it was a pidgey or so. I really think I often miss rare spawns like these because of the pokestop distribution is often times rather wide. But not wide enough so that nearby pokemon are displayed.

Therefore: we really need the option to check the nearby list OR pokestop radar.

PS: I just remembered: none of my rarer catches was made at a pokestop.. such as my strongest Lapras I catched it between 3 pokestops but nowhere near one of either when we still had the nearby function. In other words, with the radar I would never have caught this lapras because I'd been completely unaware of it.

TL;DR: We need an option to switch between nearby and radar.

[Idea]Minigames at Pokestops for more items, like Ingress.

Posted: 16 Jul 2017 11:30 AM PDT

In Ingress, there are two ways to hack a portal for items. The first, equivalent to spinning the disc, is just to press the hack button. But holding the button down activates "glyph hacking", a minigame that increases item drops if you win.

There are a number of ways this could be implemented in PoGo. My original thought was "Who's That Pokémon?", as a callback to the anime, where you get given a silhouette and have to type in it's name (or select from a menu). But after hearing about lots of people making bad raid choices (Blissey for everything because the game auto-selects it, even though its terrible for raiding) I thought about the Type Matchup Quiz in Sun and Moon's Festival Plaza, and thought that it would work as a good way to educate people who weren't into Pokémon before Go on the type chart.

If you press down on the disc instead of spinning it, you will be presented with a picture of a Pokémon, its types, and asked to select of the 18 types one that would be super effective against it. Choosing a correct answer will earn you 50% more items (so 2 more items for a normal spin, 3 more for a 10-stop bonus or daily streak, and 9 more for a weekly streak). If the Pokémon shown has a double weakness and you select that, you get double items instead. The game would have a time limit of 10 seconds to stop people from just looking at a chart, and to make sure they don't stop in one place for too long and, say, hold up traffic.

Gotten 2K eggs as well (filling the whole page), that's counting the team bonus of course. Without it you can still get a healthy 5-6 items for every spin. A nice reward for holding the gym for a long time (best way to get the medal)

[Idea] I put rare (but not strong) pokemon in gyms to help players fill in their pokedex!

Posted: 16 Jul 2017 12:58 PM PDT

I really don't like having blanks in my pokedex. To help other players who are OCD like me I have been putting pokemon which are not super common (ex. Hitmontop) into gyms to help them fill in their blank spots. Does anybody else do this?

This is my first post, please forgive me if the formatting is wrong.

P.S. I only have Farfetch'd left to see from gen1! I look in every gym I come to but no luck yet :'(

[Discussion] Do you feel the gap between rural and city players have widened since the gym update?

Posted: 16 Jul 2017 11:25 AM PDT

Rurals never had it easy in this game. Lack of stops, spawn quality, lack of nests, lack of playerbase, making the game less fun for rural or suburban players.

Since coin payout is now dependant on gym turnover, i think they widened the gap. Some of my mon's are in their gyms since Release. I really like the motivation system, but why aren't they return home when they have no motivation? Before the rework, being in rural gyms seems even like the only advantage being a rural player, because it means relativly easy coins (of course it depends if you manage to get yourself a spot)

Now with Raids, there is the next part. I never have seen other guys playing since a long time. Our first raid in town has been left out completly. Since release, i only was in 1 Raid yet, which has been occupied by more then me and my GF. We did not tried out a Lv 4 out yet, because it would be a guaranteed waste. We also have no FB or WA groups covering our town. I mean yes we have a county-wide group, but who is willing to drive 20-30km to some rural gym?

We had some new stops and gyms added. This is a step in the right direction. However, one of the 2 new stops added is in a private yard. Yay.

What do you think? Do you feel the gap between rural/suburban and city/downtown players have widened since the gym update? In my opinion, this question is a clear YES.

I really like the gym update, the motivation system. I really like the Raid system. But the current implementation is clearly shifted towards high-turnover, and is dependant on an active playerbase. Here in my town, the game is dead. Now more than ever before...

PSA: SafetyNet may be failing on some set-ups currently

Posted: 16 Jul 2017 12:33 PM PDT

The last page of the Magisk discussion thread has a good bit of confirms, and I too am failing both SafetyNet checks even though I was passing them about an hour ago.

As to what this means for Pokemon GO; if you're on Android with a non-stock set-up, you may not be able to log in or play currently.

Edit: Fix for Magisk users (I can confirm this works for me): https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/magisk/safetynet-fix-pass-safetynet-2017-07-17-t3637801

For those with a completed Dex and who are saving their stardust, who is your current buddy and why?

Posted: 16 Jul 2017 07:17 PM PDT

I know there are a million buddy questions on this sub, but I am wondering what people are doing in this specific situation. I only need Hitmontop to complete my Dex (aside from regionals) and I have decided to save my Stardust until we at very least see what happens this Saturday.

Since I am not actively looking to power up my Tyranitars, Dragonites, or any of the other common buddies, I'm not sure what I want to do. Having Tyranitar as a buddy has become much less needed with him being in raids, and Dratini is so much more common now I feel like Dragonite as a buddy is also not as important anymore.

My only idea right now is Porygon. I only have 56 candies and am assuming Porygon-Z will be 100, but at the same time I feel like it's too early to start saving for a theoretical Gen 4 release. Thoughts?

[IDEA] Bulk use of rare candy

Posted: 16 Jul 2017 02:10 AM PDT

First of all, I do a lot of raids and I'm pretty lucky with rare candies.

So yesterday I hit the 500 and thought it would be time to use some. So I gave 100 to Snorlax. This took me about 20 minutes. I already see myself sitting in a corner, after I got a legendary using rare candy for 2h. It would be nice if we could get a feature that asks how many I want to use for that Pokemon
