| Posted: 13 Jul 2017 08:11 PM PDT "To delegate tasks large and small…a guild servant first of all" I am writing this because I get asked often or see it come up in posts from time to time: "How can I start a guild?" or "How can I attract and keep good members in my guild?" Now, I am by no means a GREAT guild leader and have made more than my share of mistakes but I feel that after nearly two decades of starting, running and maintaining guilds… I have learned from enough of those mistakes to be at least a GOOD guild leader. For reference I will leave our guild site here, by no means am I recruiting, just giving folks something to go off of as to what makes me feel I could even attempt such a guide. http://www.vanquishguild.info/ For the record I am 41 years old and started my first guild in Merdian 59 followed by Ultima Online then onward to Ever Quest 1 and 2 where I was 2nd in command under a good friend, incredible guild leader and mentor for years before breaking away and creating my own guild(s) across dozens of games. Most of my current, core members have been with our guild (Vanquish) for 2-3 years here in ESO, some for 5-10 years from previous games and a few even longer (yep, we are getting old TOGETHER, bring on the Centrum Silver!). All told I have come across and gamed with roughly 6,000 awesome people! So, with out further ado, my top 10 bits of advice on running a guild: 1) Be kind to people… "No one is SO important that they cannot be kind to people" If you want to lead a guild this is your number one job. It could be a raid guild, a PvP guild, RP guild or a guild like ours, a jack of all, community type of guild but regardless of your focus always remember you are a servant first of all, you no longer play just for you and how you treat those around you is what you will be given in return, as a guild leader you are here to take care of those that join your guild. Carry this philosophy yourself and it will trickle through your ranks. 2) Have a focus… What makes your guild different than the other 8,972 guilds out there and why would folks wish to sign up with you over them? Your focus should be something that is important to you and something that you can cultivate for all those involved. My focus is being what we call "casually hardcore" We cater to "older" gamers that have no time for drama or ego and simply want to make the most out of their time in game without any pressure. Find YOUR focus and stick to it. When recruiting make sure the potential member shares this same focus, this will help immensely in turn over. 3) Have your infrastructure in place…I suggest a website and a voice coms server in place, set up, fleshed out and organized BEFORE you begin recruiting larger numbers. Is this a lot of work? Yes it is….but so is ALL of this. A week or so put into prepping a website can go a long ways in showing potential members your dedication to your members and your guild. Getting them to utilize it however, well that's for another time, har! 4) Do not underestimate people… I guarantee you that someone if not many someones' in your guild is/are far better suited to lead than you. See that level 26 Sorcerer that is just terrible in dungeons? Well, he's a decorated combat veteran turned teacher, father and grandfather. He now runs a successful business and has 128 employees under him. Learn from people folks, get to know your members and learn from them. 5) Don't try to please everyone…I have said it time and time again, GUILDS ARE NOT A DEMOCRACY, it simply does not work in an MMO environment long term, I am sure some will argue with me and some will (hopefully) prove me wrong but in the end, the success and failure of the guild falls on your shoulders alone. Listen to people, take advice and as above, learn from them but in the end the buck stops with you. If you try to make everyone happy you will drive yourself insane and will eventually DREAD logging in. 6) Build a solid leadership team…Your leaders are your backbone, chose them wisely and overall…ALLOW THEM to come out of the woodwork on their own and over time. Those specifically seeking out lead roles will do so naturally and through action, not words. Keep an eye out for these folks and encourage, motivate and cultivate them if needed. I also, on occasion, like to beat my leads with a stick…not a large one mind you, no time for "sick time" in Vanquish… just big enough to leave a nice welt! 7) Set and age requirement OR be very upfront that you do NOT have an age requirement…Now, contrary to popular believe this is not about maturity, it is about RESPONSIBILITY. I SIMPLY do not want a 14 year old in our TS server on a Friday night due to the nature of topics that arise let alone the amount of booze involved in our weekend sessions! Our age requirement is in place for both the protection of our younger players and ourselves. I see far too many guilds saying "No reqs! PST for invite!" I am sorry, at 41 I do not want to be in a voice coms program with a 14 year old and I am SURE they feel the same…"old people…WTF? Amirite?" 8) Implement some type of application or interview process… Yep, I can hear the eyes rolling right now! I promise you though, that if you have even just a base application in place or take 3-5 mins to just chat with someone about what they are seeking in a guild, this will go a LONG ways in building a team of like-minded folks and cut WAY down on potential drama. Simply asking them if they have ANY questions for you or about your guild is often all it takes to start up a solid conversation and some back and forth banter. 9) Be active…you yourself must be active, motivated and IN LOVE with the game you are playing, the second you lose the desire to log in, the excitement and anticipation of running that dungeon…its time to re-evaluate things. A guild leader, more so than anyone else should ALWAYS be up to something, always be planning, recruiting, developing, getting involved and encouraging others to do the same, excitement is contagious. A stagnant guild is a dead guild. OF COURSE there will be down time but we are always looking to turn it into UP TIME. 10) Be transparent, upfront and honest in all things…I have made many a mistake in this area and still do from time to time but I cannot stress it enough, you and your leaders especially must be transparent and honest in all things. Leaders don't use Officer chat to gossip, they don't post non-constructively about members or the guild itself, they are motivators both in the guild AND in the community at large… I try to remember that ANYTHING I say about anyone I am ok with them hearing themselves or the guild/community as a whole. Don't work against your members folks, work FOR them. One final but important thought as I complete this wall of text… New players are not "NOOBS", they are the LIFE BLOOD of any guild wishing to last more than a few months. Set up specifically for them, seek them out and have infrastructure in place to help them quickly find their niche and place in their new home. New players breathe new life into any game for most anyone, they have questions, are motivated and always looking to run content! This often times leads your old, jaded veteran players to see the game once again through new eyes... and we ALL need that from time to time. Agree, disagree, think I'm full of shit (Duck, get out of here!), all is good and I would love to hear peoples thoughts and opinions on the above, if there are any, if not then no worries at all. In the end all I wish for is that people have fun, be that as a member of a guild or as a guild leader, the latter being a lot of work but also ENDLESS content and vastly rewarding! I also want to think all of my members active and otherwise that have traveled with me thus far, what an adventure it has been! @Oakos, Commander and Founder of Vanquish - where Vodka is at the top of the food pyramid. | Address the Crown Store changes Posted: 13 Jul 2017 09:20 PM PDT Dear ZOS, I have supported you for a year and a half. I have been subscribed for 8 months, and I've poured hundreds of dollars into you're game for cosmetics, dlc, and subscription. I have fought for you and defended you. But at some point you have slid into very dangerous territory. We were promised that this Crown shop would be purely cosmetic. This was instantly a lie with the health potions, foods and xp scrolls. But they were fine. Easy to make in game, you can simply laugh at people who pay for these. Then one day, the coolest mount ever put in game showed up without warning on the crown shop, for $40. For 4 days. A very obvious scheme to rush people to purchase an extremely expensive mount. BUT it's simply cosmetic, a scary precedent in price, but still only cosmetic. I was worried, but not expecting what came next. After several more very cool mounts at high prices, ZOS slipped up. The highly awaited elk mount. $40 for a basic, non upgradable (visually) mount. Luckily it seems the player base reacted accordingly. Very few elks are seen in the game, which leads to the thought that it was a hard failure. Mounts after the elk have been less expensive. For me the biggest concern came with the homestead patch. The prices on the houses were insane. $100+. The UI for the housing and furniture placement was beyond amazing. Two thumbs up. But to ask for so much money to the average player is extreme. Beyond crazy. And people defended these prices. Most of those houses sold to us were copy pasted from the very over used houses all through out the world. The furniture is just as crazy priced asking $50+ for a fountain or bedroom set. I was very very very concerned. but these are still technically cosmetic. Even if they provide a lot of convenience, I would still defend ZOS, even as I was scared at what the crown store was becoming. The last thing I saw before I took s hiatus due to anger was the research scrolls. The first TRUE attack on non paying loyal members. What takes years for the average player was now reduced to months of you had the money. But! It was a single day, and there was a cool down. I finally convinced myself of this just the other day so I started myself on the hype train for Horns of the Reach. A new dungeon pack, those sweet highly coveted skins, new content. And then I find out the nail in the "cosmetic only" crown store. 15 day research scrolls, the better skin in the dungeon pack replaced with a *hat* please. I know you have to make money. I know it's been successful. I support this. But these last two events have really pushed the cosmetic only line. Can you please explain how these are continuing with the idea that the crown store would be cosmetic only, and would not negatively affect content, which we are seeing with HotR. I genuinely am ready to have my mind changed. [link] [comments] | ||||||||||
| Posted: 13 Jul 2017 11:34 PM PDT I saw another thread for it happening to a guy in activity finder but a friend and I have been grouped about an hour, ran a public dungeon then tried to invite a friend. He gets the invite but a message that it failed to join. We try to disband and can't. Reboot, relog etc and nothings working. Anyone have any recommendations? [link] [comments] | ||||||||||
| I got master angler on 14 characters Posted: 13 Jul 2017 03:15 PM PDT So this is kind of a cross post from the forums, you can find the post here. I didn't share this with reddit back when i got 12 master anglers, figured i'd do it this time though. I started fishing back in 2015 when perfect roe was added to the game, and then several months later i decided to do it again, and it sort of just kept on going like that, my original intention was purely to get gold from selling roe. Then i started saving data from each run, and i've now compiled it all for you here, enjoy :). Total number of fish caught by character. Average number of fish caught per run: 8189,76 Total number of fish caught, ranked by type. Total amount of fish caught: 106354. Amount of bait used per water type. Gold spent on each type of bait, calculated with MM prices on PC-EU. Total amount of gold spent on bait: ~1328937 gold Amount of perfect roe acquired from each run. Average roe per run: 80,25 And here is a picture of the fish in my craft bag. This has been taking forever, 696 days from first master angler to last master angler. I managed to keep myself entertained by watching game of thrones/the walking dead/breaking bad etc and youtube and twitch on my other screen, and i'm so glad it's over now, that is until zenimax gives us more character slots. Completing a zone achivement can take from 3 hours to 3 days, i once even caught a blue fish 9 times before i got the green one i was missing. If you are thinking of going for the title, go with a friend, it speeds up the process alot. I did 99% of this solo, and it could have gone faster, but i also didn't mind the extra roe from taking longer to catch the rare fish. Finally i want to ask you a question, do you think it's possible ZOS buffed master angler with homestead by making the loot table bigger? both my wardens went quicker then usual, and i suspect that homestead might have done something, but im not sure. Or maybe it's just rng? Let me know what you think, and thank you so much for reading :) [link] [comments] | ||||||||||
| Stuck in Activity Finder Group. Posted: 13 Jul 2017 11:19 PM PDT Did a random dungeon tonight, and it seemed like the server had a hiccup and we got booted. Came back in, finished the dungeon. Afterwards, it said "Activity Complete" but I couldn't leave the group. Logged off and logged back on, couldn't leave group. Logged off for a bit, came back on, everyone else is now offline, but I still can't leave the group. Are the four of us destined to be forced to play together until the end of time? | [PC] Is there demand for an out of game character viewer? Posted: 13 Jul 2017 08:06 PM PDT I've just noted that there doesn't seem to be any kind of work done to be able to view characters out of the game itself. I'd like to be able to see achievements and the characters I have, levels, summaries etc. They have for other MMO's and I think it's a great idea. Does anyone know if there is any news or a work in progress or anything in the works for this at all? The question why? I'm not sure, there's some sort of itching feeling to be able to see my character fully fleshed out on a database outside of a game itself. I am not sure why but I am not alone. | Dunmer vs Altmer for Vampire Magicka Sorc? Posted: 13 Jul 2017 11:31 PM PDT I'm fairly new to the game and am a dunmer vampire magicka sorc, though it doesn't really seem the flame resist from being a dunmer really helps out that much. Nearly cp 100 and wondering if it would be worth switching to Altmer, and if I'd get better stats doing so going into some of the end game content? I want to do pve and pvp. | Quick question about extending ESO+ on Xbox One Posted: 14 Jul 2017 01:35 AM PDT On PC and PS4 i believe it seems you are able to purchase ESO+ for more than a month and receive 3 months or so worth of crowns immediately. It seems Xbox One doesn't have this feature which is unfortunate, but is there a way to extend the ESO+ at all? Or do I have to have it renewed after every time it expires. | Show me your Nord Hero, Elven Hero, and Breton Hero costume dyes! Posted: 13 Jul 2017 04:58 PM PDT Hello all! These costumes are among my favorites ever released in ESO and I'm so glad they came back (I believe this is their RETURN, correct me if I am wrong). I want to see your guys's dye combos for the costumes! Please state which costume you are showing, and the dyes used in which slots. Interested to see your creativity here! | Posted: 14 Jul 2017 12:50 AM PDT New to the game and I need some (probably noobish)advice with crafting. From everything I've read, if I'm going to get into crafting, I should do it as early as possible. So far I only have 1 char and I'm going with Enchanting and Alchemy. I keep reading about "researching" traits, but I can't figure out how, does that not apply with those two professions? In WoW some of the things you can make with professions can only be used on the char who creates it, is that true in this game? If so, what's the best/most logical option for my main to dedicate himself to as opposed to relegating it to an alt. I haven't made any crafting alts yet, is that something I should do sooner than later? How high on my priority list should I make that? Should my crafting alts be chars that I plan to play someday, or will they most likely always just sitting in some city forever with no purpose other than to craft? Thank you [link] [comments] | ||||||||||

| Posted: 14 Jul 2017 12:28 AM PDT I've had level 20 legerdemain on my NB for quite a while now, and only recently discovered that I've been rewarded some pretty cool colors that I've rarely seen others use. A dark green and a dark blue color. Could there be something else I've unlocked without noticing? Are there any quests I can start now unlock at higher level of legerdemain? I'm guessing there might be something Thieves guild related, but I haven't been able to find anything yet. [link] [comments] | ||||||||||

| Long load screens since patch [PS4] Posted: 14 Jul 2017 03:43 AM PDT Ever since the patch I've been getting hit with a lot of long load screens. Sometimes two in a row. I don't think I had the problem yesterday, but all of a sudden I am. Is anyone else experiencing this? I don't feel like it should be happening at all this early in the morning. Wasn't happening at all patch day as far as I remember. (could have just not noticed) [link] [comments] | ||||||||||
| Ramblings of an ESO n00b casual Posted: 13 Jul 2017 06:48 PM PDT I play this game on PC with a controller and I love it. I need more DELETEs please, because being a n00b casual is messy business. I'm horrible at naming characters. That being said, I finally settled on a DW Altmer Magplar. I have no clue what I'm doing, but I'm having a blast! I have also discovered the ultimate n00b's bane in researching this game online: acronyms. Some places online make the ESO out to be unfriendly to new players, but I have found it to be quite welcoming as I've had multiple randoms offer gold, materials, and group invites - which were very welcome in public dungeons. I had my first stalker yesterday. The dude spammed friend requests and guild invites while also offering gold and werewolf/vampire bites...all while following me around on my Skyshard run for hours. First ignore, and I actually felt bad for doing that, but it kinda creeped me out. I truly love the fact that combat is more Oblivion than Skyrim. Also, dodge rolls. My favorite weapon for DW is Ratsplatter. I find the death animation to be both hilarious and gratifying. My wife has been after me for years to play WoW with her, but I really didn't like it when I tried it. Now we play ESO together. She saw I had a mount and decided she wanted one. First I tried to give her one that I bought with crowns, but you can't do that. Now I'm addicted to stealing everything in sight, but at least my wife now has her Sweetroll... I saw another player running towards a chest that I hadn't noticed, but I had a better approach angle...so I snaked it. Then I got snaked on the next 5 or so chests. InstantKarmaMan Being a n00b is fucking awesome! I still have the sense of wonder and awe at the new discoveries I am making. Being a n00b is the best part of falling in love with a new game. That being said, after hundreds of hours in the other Elder Scrolls games my understanding of lore still hasn't passed the rather awkward "Something, something...megalomaniacal Daedric dude" phase. ESO is slowly turning into the Hotel California...I can log out any time I like, but I can never leave. TL;DR I'm enjoying being a noob in this awesome game. [link] [comments] | ||||||||||
