Something must change about Custom Games and Dedicated Servers

Posted: 13 Jul 2017 05:18 AM PDT

This is absolutely unacceptable. A current top2 custom game doesn't have dedicated servers. Which means game is over when the host leaves. Which means lags. In fact not a single custom game has received dedicated server support since October 2016. More than half of a year ago.

Open Angel Arena had to resort to taking servers from another game - Pimp My Peon, the creator of which has agreed to help OAA.

Something HAS to change. There is absolutely zero incentive to create a new custom game because it will simply get trampled by other games with dedicated servers. Nobody wants to rely on a host, nobody wants to play with lags.

Why do we have a separate tab for a thing which valve ignore?

The International 7: Heroes To Watch Out For (Part 1)

Posted: 13 Jul 2017 04:43 AM PDT

The International 7 is right around the corner. Valve tournaments, and especially The International have always been known for it's unique meta that starts to build up and progress through the group stage all the way to the Grand Finals. So what heroes should you be ready to see at the biggest tournament of the year, and, most importantly, why?

Bloodseeker

Versatility is the name of the game here. What makes this hero so amazing?

  1. Lane flexibility - Bloodseeker is an incredible laning-phase hero due to his sustain and damage, AoE nuke and the ability to directly benefit from other lanes (Thirst). More importantly, this hero is able to occupy any of 3 lanes. I don't even wanna mention that he is an amazing jungler.

  2. Role flexibility - Bloodseeker is on the short list of cores that are able to adapt their playstyle and item build to his specific role in the line-up. Itembuilds ranging from utility (Eul's, Forcestaff, Aghanim's) to a teamfight expert (Shiva's, Blademail, Radiance) to a high-DPS core (S&Y, Butterfly, Bloodthorn) to a super-meme [but nevertheless, highly effective] (Dagon, Aether Lens, Ethereal Blade) builds make sure this hero fits the needs of his team.

  3. High combo potential - From well-known Seeker+Zeus or Seeker+QOP to a more subtle, small combinations with already popular (!this is very important!) heroes (Earth Spirit, Disruptor, Warlock). Caution, extreme risk of cheese-strats (Seeker + DP, Seeker + Spectre + Zeus, and an already classic Seeker+Tusk)

  4. Extreme pressure - Bloodseeker changes the way enemy team approaches the game both from picking and gameplay perspective. Certain heroes go out of the equation in the picking phase (Melee cores like Sven, Lifestealer and, most notably, Slark). He also restricts jungle farming and low-hp wandering overall, with the risk of being punished either by information (Hero's positioning, items) or by getting killed.

  5. Lack of direct counters - There is no hero that can punish Bloodseeker. Because of his versatility, it is impossible to counter the hero himself. [Examples: Nyx>OD, Pugna>Tinker, WW>Meepo] The focus, rather, should be on overall game plan and pick structure for both teams, which creates room for unexpected twists in the picking phase.

  6. Amazing Talents - We've come a long way from the introduction of talents. They became a huge part of the competitive meta that can no longer be neglected. A number of previously popular heroes have fallen off in part due to their underwhelming scaling (Lion, Riki, Elder Titan).

Skills

Bloodrage

An incredible spell with a number of different uses. Those include:

  • Allowing teammates to heal from lasthits in-between the action.
  • Amplifying enemy's incoming damage. Focusing a hero have ever been easier and more satisfying.
  • Amplifying teammate's outgoing damage.
  • Dagon
  • Can also be used as a Linken's braker (has slightly shorter range than Rupture).
  • Increases all incoming damage for Roshan.

Those are just 3 examples of big combinations possible with the spell:

Lvl18 Queen of Pain with no items, buffed by Bloodrage, deals 1018 AoE damage to any regular heroes with 25% basic magic resistance [Scream of Pain + Sonic Wave] Lvl18 Venomancer with no items, buffed by Bloodrage, deals 1303 AoE damage to any regular heroes with 25% basic magic resistance. [Poison Nova] Lvl18 Death Prophet with no items, buffed by Bloodrage, deals a total of 32892.35 damage to a dummy target (0 armor) with DPS of 961.76. [Exorcism]

Blood Rite

Not too much, just an AoE 6 second pure damage (can be amplified) silence. An alright spell. Not so good without a supporting stun, since it's relatively easy for an enemy to go out of the radius.

Thirst

Probably his biggest spell. Makes you hate the game if you are on the opposite side. Can't farm with low hp, goodbye jukes, sayonara invis escapes.

Chasing heroes have never been easier. No need to spend bonus gold on dust for supports (and for others).

Seeker loves when his teammates harass other heroes. A hero below 50% hp (lvl4 Thirst) gives Bloodseeker ~60ms [With Brown Boots]. The ultimate bully.

5 heroes below 10% hp grant 1000ms (wroom wroom) to Bloodseeker with Brown Boots.

Rupture

Pure damage, moving not recommended. Makes life really hard for enemy heroes that rely highly on positioning; makes Force Staff purchases less effective (not for you). Kotl, Disruptor, Earth Spirit, Venge, Tusk, Kunkka, Magnus and Rubick are very welcome. Don't forget about your friends Tony and Pudga.

Countered by Linken's or Lotus Orb (Not really countered, but does a lot of bad to Seeker himself).

Talents

This segment will have a lot of comparison with the same-level talents of other heroes. 2 important keywords: A [Average Value] and RAV [Real Average Value]. Some heroes like Lion (lvl10 +60 dmg) and Tidehunter (lvl10 +50 dmg) can not be seriously juxtaposed to other heroes that really do rely on right clicks and therefore will not be accounted in the RA numbers.

LVL10

LVL15

LVL20

  • +10 All Stats - Good talent, a whole +1 stat more than on average.

    • Total of 7 heroes have this talent at lvl20. RAV = +9 All Stats.
  • +14% Rupture Damage - Situational talent. Can be both really good (If you have the means to move your target) or absolutely useless.

LVL25

  • 30% Lifesteal - unfortunately (or fortunately) this doesn't work on spells or items. It is still a good talent as it gives more sustain during teamfights and lets you free up an item slot (if you had one with lifesteal).

    • Only 3 heroes in the game have this talent at lvl25. Both Alchemist and Arc Warden get 30% lifesteal while Medusa gets 25%.
  • -7s Blood Rite Cooldown- 6 second silence with a 5 second cooldown? Okay, you won't be able WILL be able to perma silence heroes! Conclusion: Really good.

Premium Event Statistics

Bloodseeker have been picked 42 times in 7.06 with overall winrate of 52,38%. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find more advanced statistics (Regions, Teams, What phase has he been picked in etc.) Help in this direction will be appreciated.

Weird Morphling/Drow Ranger interaction

Posted: 13 Jul 2017 07:34 AM PDT

Bug 1

Since 7.00, Drow's illuions emit Precision Aura.

Morpling can create a Hybrid of allied Drow if he obtains Aghanim's Scepter. Hybrid illusion is created with Morphling's, not target's, stats.

If Morphling uses Hybrid on allied Drow, creates illusion should grant bonus damage to allies, overriding already existing buff from Drow herself in case if illusion's agility is higher than Drow's.

However, the aura does not give any bonus damage at all, not even when the real Drow is dead. BUT activating it will give non-hero units correct amount of bonus damage.

This is a weird behaviour and it kills any potential of interesting strats with aghs morphling.

tl;dr:

Morph with Aghs creates a hybrid illusion of allied Drow. Morph has more agility than Drow, so does the illusion (hybrid illusions use morph's stats rather than the target's).

Expected behaviour: Precision Aura buff from original Drow should be overridden by more powerful, illusion-provided buff for as long as the illusion is alive&has more agility than Drow.

Current behaviour: Illusion does not provide Precision Aura buff to heroes at all, even if original Drow dies while Hybrid is still alive. Activating Hybrid aura grants correct amount of bonus damage to creeps, though.

Bug 2

It gets weirder when it comes to activating Precision aura to affect non-hero units. As I already stated above, simply activating hybrid's aura works properly and gives correct amount of damage to creeps. And if hybrid dies, the buff is removed.

However, if original Drow activates her aura while creeps are already affected by buff from hybrid, and then hybrid dies (while drow is still alive), aura buff stops giving ANY bonus damage at all (tooltip says 0 damage).

I'll be playing around with this more to test all possible interactions and will edit this post with additional info about bug 2.

Your Dota 2 worst nightmare.

ISP: "Thank you for calling Comcast/yourISP, how can I help you?"

You: "Yes I'm trying to play Dota 2 but I keep getting a error each time I try to connect to the service, but I can get to other websites just fine, can you help me?"

ISP: "Oh that's because you haven't subscribed to our gaming package! If you want to connect to popular gaming services, you need to pay an extra 20 bucks a month on top of your monthly charge!"

Arguing with ISP but it doesn't go anywhere because you don't have a choice in ISP so they won't budge

You: "Fine add the package."

click

Still can't connect to Dota 2 servers and call back

You: "Hi, I just bought the gaming package but I still can't connect to Dota 2 servers."

ISP: "Oh, I see the issue here, Dota 2 isn't included in your Gaming package."

You: "Then how do I play my game?!"

ISP: Well you could subscribe to the unlimited internet package which is only an extra hundred dollars a month, or I see here in my database that League of Legends is a popular "mooo-bah", that is included in your package, you could play that instead. It says here it's the most popular one with over 100 million players, wouldn't you rather play that?"

TRIGGERED

Don't be a casual League player, fight for your right to Dotes.

Something about the just relaxed structure of this is a lot more fun than the formalized planned content. While I love the planned content, the nice chill format going on of just screwing around and jokes adds some much needed community interaction.

VP manager's interview about their Dota 2 team and TI prep

Posted: 13 Jul 2017 02:33 AM PDT

Virtus.pro GM Roman Dvoryakin gave an interview to cyber.sports.ru on all things VP. Translating the Dota 2-related part for you.

Original (full interview also talking about LoL and CSGO teams)

- What you felt after losing to Liquid at Epicenter?

  • (Long pause) Probably the most disappointing thing was that a lot of people who don't typically follow Dota tuned in and thought "well, there's VP, the strongest Russian team according to casters and the internet" - and then it loses two in a row to a team that was talked about like...

- It was about to fall apart.

  • Exactly. A very Russian story, don't you think? Dominate the group stage - not counting the loss to the big favorites - and then a playoff stage like that.

It's sad that few people would actually understand what was going on. We might've suffered a bit due to the Russian Esports cup (a week before Epicenter - note). Though we agreed to take part in it back in the winter, the LAN final overlapped a bit with our other plans. We only had a few days to prepare for Epicenter, and then the new patch came out and we simply didn't have enough time to go through it. I take all responsibility for the screwup, even though it was simply a disappointing sporting result and nothing more. It happens.

- After the Kiev Major it felt like the gys were mentally broken and tired, after Epicenter - more, I'd say angry. Did you like how they reacted to losses?

  • Can't say they were broken - not at all. They were broken after Boston because they knew they were capable of a lot more. Kiev, if anythig, helped them gauge their real competitive level. Obviously they were disappointed, but not broken - we all kind of guessed even then that the TI invite was ours.

After Kiev Pasha and Solo went to vacations, Lil tried to drink away his sorrows with round-the-clock Dota. We rested well, got a bit of warmup at the Russian Cup and everything was great.

I think the main strength of the team is that they get over losses really well. The toughest moment was probably at the Summit when we lost to LGD and dropped to the lower bracket. Lil and Ramzes thought "we had to win every game at all costs, why are we even doing this all-hero bullshit?". And me and Solo tried to convince them that out goal is not to win every game but to perform well in Seattle. That's the main objective. If we can accomplish something else along the way - great.

That's why we won the Summit in the end. Because in game 5 of the finals it came down to a simple thing: pick heroes you're guaranteed to beat Secret with - and that's it. We knew we were going to win with the pick we had, but didn't expect Puppey to get confused and fall for the bait.

Again, taking losses in stride. How exactly top6 at Epicenter cancels out top2 at a Major? How did the Summit victory change anything? I mean, if we just played our standard picks and won the tournament, what would it prove? But winning with 81 unique heroes picked - that's cool.

- Did you get flak from opponents at the Summit for doing this?

  • No. LGD didn't even realize what was happening.

- What do you think, are they ready for TI?

  • Not that much different from Kiev. On one hand, they're more experienced on the big stage now, but it's TI - 20 million and all that. They went to Kiev as dark horses, but now the situation is more like Boston - with the target on their backs. So they're prepared better, but the sheer pressure might cancel it out.

.................................

(Just an interesting titbit from later in the interview - note) We wanted to take the trophy with Ukrainian and Russian flags if we won (to prove sports transcend politics), so after game 3 of the Kiev finals our manager went to some semi-underground shop to buy these. Just for perspective, the simplest way to get a Russian flag in Kiev is say you want to burn it down. So it wasn't easy :) They're still somewhere backstage at Palace Ukraine, just lying there.
