What class/race are you going to main in D2?

All of the D2 systems changes point to a very clear design goal: Bungie wants you PLAYING more, and MANAGING less

Posted: 14 Jul 2017 12:07 PM PDT

Some call it streamlining, others call it dumbing down, but if there's a central design goal that explains most of the systems changes we've learned about so far for D2, it's that Bungie wants you to spend more time actually playing the game (and experiencing the hands-on gameplay that has always been -- and will always be -- the pinnacle of the Destiny experience) and less time managing loadouts, subclass builds, inventory & vault space, finding people to play with, figuring out which RNG perk rolls are good, deciphering which activity to do next, etc.

During the long content droughts we've experienced in D1, "playing the systems" has become something of a stand-in for playing new content. It's created niches for streamers and content creators, made members of this community internet famous, and provided carrots for long-time players to chase in the form of god rolled weapons and T12 armor builds.

But is gear management really more fun than playing the actual game? It certainly isn't for the vast majority of players.

Now, where we still need to see if Bungie and their partners will bring the goods is if they can create enough meaningful endgame content -- on a regular basis -- to keep players engaged in the long run, when they won't have endless perk and roll combinations to chase and test. And while streamlining systems should reduce the time spent on management, as a looter-shooter there is still a place for meaningful build and gear management that hopefully won't be lost with these changes.

Simplicity isn't always a bad thing, and is a core tenant of good design (though it's usually called "elegance" in that context). If the systems changes lead to simpler but still meaningful system choices, more time shooting stuff in-game, and less time standing idly in the tower while I fiddle with DIM on my laptop, I'll consider that a big improvement.

Theory: We aren't going to start with three subclasses each. We're gonna start with one.

Posted: 14 Jul 2017 06:13 AM PDT

Most D1 veterans have learned to temper expectations when it comes to new content. As a community, we sometimes hype something up to the point where we make it impossible for the actual content live up to the hypothetical possibilities.

To that end, I've seen quite a bit of speculation over the 6/9 subclass 'debate'. In my opinion, we won't have either to start. We'll have three.

Titans will start as Strikers (Arc)

Warlocks will start as Voidwalkers (Void)

Hunters will start as Gunslingers (Solar)

Since the story seems to be focused on us losing our light, it would make sense (canonically for us and financially for Bungie/Activision) for us to lose our subclasses. We start out as having the 'defining' subclass for each croup, then have to go on a journey to get back our powers.

Since each of the Vanguard appear to have their own 'planet', seems most likely to me that we'll have a story mission unique to our class when we arrive at said planet. If you start as a Hunter, you'll meet up with Cayde on Nessus and eventually be given a unique story mission to unlock Arcstrider. Warlocks will discover Dawnblade on Io with Ikora, and Titans will unlock Chris Evans on Titan with Zavala. This would blend some of the OG storytelling/development techniques of Vanilla Destiny with some of the methods we saw used in the Taken King expansion (unique missions to unlock new subclasses).

This sets the stage for us to either recover or unlock a third subclass with the next major expansion/DLC.

Thoughts? I'd be perfectly okay with this arc if it is handled well, but I can definitely see how it could be construed as a step backwards overall for some of the more veteran players.

After the last ToO, after D1 has been eclipsed by D2, Bungie can you open up the Lighthouse & Raid areas for exploring?

Posted: 14 Jul 2017 10:16 AM PDT

It is quickly approaching; the time when Destiny and all its fantastic endgame content will be become irrelevant. When that day comes Bungie, how about opening up the areas that a pretty good percentage of Destiny players never had an opportunity to see?

My thoughts are that players can spawn into VoG, Crota's End, Kings Fall (it will probably still take an HOUR just to walk through KF) and WoTM maps and get to do their own walkthroughs. No enemies would Spawn, no loot to be had but rather an opportunity for everyone to see the amazing places you created for us. Some players were not able to get teams together or were too nervous to try. While others did complete your Raids but never had the time to explore because the Raid needed to be completed OR things were shooting at us.

As for the Lighthouse, it will give Guardians that feeling of what it WOULD have been like flying into Mercury and getting the opportunity to explore THAT Social Space. I think it would be nice way for a little nostalgia of what was D1.

For those wondering, Nessus, or rather 7066 Nessus is a real body in our solar system. For the nerds like me, more details inside.

Posted: 14 Jul 2017 11:47 AM PDT

Per NASA's JPL Website and Wikipedia, discovered on April 26th, 1993, Nessus is one of many, many centaurs (a type of icy minor planet) that usually orbits between Uranus and Neptune; likely named after the famous centaur who was killed by Heracles) in Greek mythology.

It's quite small as it is only about 60 km across (give or take 16 km).

It takes 122.4 years to orbit once! During it's orbit, it can be closer to the Sun than Uranus and further from the sun than Neptune. This is most likely due to being gravitationally nudged by the nearby giant planets.

If it wasn't for Bungie including this in Destiny 2, I never would have known about it. Gotta love when you can learn things from video games!

Guardian Down....

Posted: 14 Jul 2017 12:42 AM PDT

For all the fun folks who have the enjoyment of running a raid, playing a PvP match or just having fun with one of the most enjoyable folks you've ever met online, sad news is about. RonBurgundye has passed on. Hands down one of the most enjoyable people you will have ever met, this guardians light is no more. Weapons of Whiskey may be small, but we are close and we love our folks and Mr. Burgundye was a pillar on which we all started our Destiny adventure with. We hereby dedicate this entire year to his memory. Dammit man, we will miss you....http://vanhoe.com/fh/obituaries/obituary.cfm?o_id=4299008&fh_id=13193

Titan Boxing: "Cayde's got a lot of glimmer riding on this...."

Posted: 14 Jul 2017 08:41 AM PDT

Me and my clan are always hanging out in the social spaces waiting for that one guy to finish picking out the right shader and armor combo so that he can do the hotline bling dance and look dope doing it. Next thing we know, 15 mins goes by before one of us says the classic, "oh, I'm fireteam leader? My bad guys..." Maybe you don't experience those moments like us but my bet is you probably do.

So naturally, our clan, was really excited when we saw the preview of the new social space that is going to contain a play-able soccer field and all kinds of other Easter eggs to keep us busy. Which is cool because I've always really wanted there to be a mini game in the social space and while soccer is certainly a good idea and pays tribute to all the time I spent kicking the soccer ball in the tower on D1, why not amp it up a notch with... Titan Boxing. How awesome would it be to challenge other titans in the farm to a round of Boxing that lasts 30 seconds or less - rock em sock em robot style - and let bystanders bet minimal amounts of glimmer for fun, or an ammo synthesis (something so small that people won't spam it)

Anyways, while we are busy re-building civilization (thx Gary) it makes sense that guardians would turn to more primitive entertainment - big clunky dudes punching each other.

I can't for the life of me see how Fixed Weapon Rolls will not destroy weapon diversity.. I'm looking for Pro-FWR views/opinions please

Posted: 14 Jul 2017 07:07 AM PDT

It just seems really clear cut to me even with the revamped weapon classifications

Basically right now the flowchart goes: PvE or PvP > Boss or Trash > Archetype for the situation

With fixed rolls how are we all going to not be complete clones if we all want to be doing our best? Am I really suppose to believe a clear front runner of every archetype isn't going to come forth and likely be easily available to the masses?

Help me see the light?

Edit: anyone else read the title like 'Pro Future War- oh wait.. nope'?

Edit 2: Holy dreg stubs that was fast! I'm already a converted Guardian! It really does seem like a far better direction to go in.. just when I thought I could put the hype train on cruise control NOPE CHOO CHOOOO

Destiny 2 Beta Loading Animation Loop 720p

Posted: 14 Jul 2017 11:54 AM PDT

Hi all,

I managed to record a full loop of the loading animation from the Destiny 2 Beta start up - I recorded this yesterday, sorry I may have missed the hype on this one... bloody work getting in the way of my gaming!

I hope I didn't butcher the stitching of the clip, and only looped it for 1 minute... Let me know if there is demand for a longer loop!

I didn't know where to upload this to keep the full quality, so please do let me know if there is anywhere else I should have uploaded this to.

I haven't had a chance to turn it into a looping .gifv yet, but I'm sure if there is demand someone out there will make one ;)
