| Some DayZ appreciation, DayZ is still special Posted: 11 Jul 2017 07:45 AM PDT While we wait for the Status Report, I want to take a moment to appreciate how complicated, multi-faceted and nuanced DayZ is as a game compared to many others. In any (successful) game, players create "mental models". Let just look at one of them that we all use in DayZ – the loot it's probably the easiest to break down. You are a fresh spawn, so far you've found a Bike helmet, empty Sporter and Shovel on the back. You're feeling pretty good right now… You run into a house, within is a Damaged Pink Raincoat, a Warn Red and Grey Hoodie and a Pristine Green Checked Shirt, what do you do? Subconsciously, we all have a mental loot model that is a simple hierarchy of items organised into how useful they are to you based on your current goals and play style. So far that would be quite standard for any survival game but other survival games don't go further than warmer or better condition so the model is a bit one dimensional, the decision is easy. In DayZ
Has anyone stopped to think that the developers who implemented the CLE and loot tables put a lot of effort into mixing up the attributes and drop rates of clothes so that we as players would be faced with more complex decisions. I wonder how much of motivation behind the weather system design was to generate nice graphics for atmosphere and how much was so the player was given input into their mental model to drive decision making? TL;DR The harder the decision making the more engaging the game but it takes a lot of effort to implement subsystems that at first glance don't appear to be tied to the players mental model. | I played DayZ Standalone for the first time today and here are 6 of my thoughts Posted: 10 Jul 2017 11:12 PM PDT I bought the standalone after watching hours of gameplay I decided to take the dive. I booted up the game and it ran fairly well. I made sure to join a high pop server and began running around. Here's 6 things I noticed

| Struggling to enjoy the standalone Posted: 10 Jul 2017 11:19 AM PDT I've been playing Dayz a lot more since the latest patch, and I've been trying desperately to enjoy it more, but the game just feels at an all time low in terms of player interaction. I'm playing on either high or fully populated servers, and I don't think I've had one meaningful interaction after 10 or so hours of play. I can probably count the number of times I've seen another player on one hand, and this is after running all around the map, not just Elektro, Cherno etc. The game in general feels devoid of life. Not just half an hour ago I was running around in Elektro, and I heard maybe 10 or so shots. Not a single zombie moved. What happened to shooting a gun being a risk/reward scenario? In the mod if you shot a gun at least zombies reacted, which allowed other players to get a general idea of where people were, creating interactions. It was a simple formula, but it always led to a ridiculous escalation of events. Now? Farts in the wind. I can't imagine the lack of guns and ammo helps in this area either, or binoculars. Why the fuck are they so rare? Where are the vehicles too? I have fond memories of hearing a car in the distance and being forced to hide, or having shootouts with randomers at petrol stations, or tracking a car down in the hopes of them driving back to their base. I haven't even heard a car, let alone saw one. Anyone else lonely as fuck? Game may as well be single player. [link] [comments] | ||
| Do people actually enjoy the hyper-realism? Posted: 11 Jul 2017 05:43 AM PDT Am I the only one who thinks that the game might be beyond hyper-realism? I can understanding needing to eat and drink and stuff, which is mediated quite well but shit like being cold, wet, sore feet, ingesting the wrong thing, none of that shit kills fully grown adults as easily as it does in DayZ. I feel like they should stick to one end of the fence and include these things as inconveniences over time, but leading to certain death in most cases is just ridiculous. When a consumer turns off the game because they are more afraid of the rain, than the militarized opposing players, then that's a serious issue with the product! [link] [comments] | ||
| Never trust random people - Story Posted: 11 Jul 2017 08:15 AM PDT Soo, some time ago me and my friend (which is currently in flight to USA, that's why I decided to share this story) were playing DayZ to chill and talk about things. Important to remember- we are usually bad guys, we just want to have fun, kill something, loot something and then die, we don't tryhard. We were heading to West, it was few moments after leaving Berezino. We met one guy on road, he had some melee wep, no gun. We talked about our directions and he suggested to join us in our trip, but he wanted us to change direction and go straight to Gorka, without looting Dubrovka, which made us think he was fishy. Although we both had guns, we were suspicious about him but we followed him and went to Gorka. During the trip, we heard some shots coming from Gorka, we decided to split up and enter the village from different directions. In the center we found ourselves and after looting few houses saw one guy in the middle of street. He stated he was friendly, so we approached him. He told us he is waiting for his friend which died (probably that was the result of shots we heard before). We talked for some time, and suddenly our first companion said he needs to restart DayZ because of some lags. That was the moment when me and my friend suspended trap. After few moments when that guy logged out we pulled out rifles and fired few bullets into head of that guy. Looted him and waited for our companion to log in. He had no chance to react, we shot him immediately after spawning. This is why you should never trust random guys with guns. And never lead them to place they can find suspicious. Oh, and thanks for Yellow Armband, those were most interesting things in your inventory XD [link] [comments] | ||
| Fuck Server Hoppers - Private Hive Recommendations Please Posted: 11 Jul 2017 07:44 AM PDT I got wrecked on a server with 3 people on it. After being shot at I added all the players and one guy fessed up to killing me. Says he just camps the shipping containers and hops from server to server to find people to shoot at and gets more loot. I understand people do that for looting, but to engage in PvP in that method is scummy as fuck. What's your favorite private hive? I've applied to a Dayzunderground and Dayzcolony but haven't heard anything back. [link] [comments] | ||
| Posted: 11 Jul 2017 03:43 AM PDT So what is DayZ? What should DayZ be? Or What does the community want it to be? These are all questions that are very hard to answer because DayZ is a sandbox experience where you, the player decides that DayZ is. I have seen quite a few opinions floating about in this sub on this subject. So I'll try and summarize the most common ones:
You see guys where I'm going with this? There isn't any definitive answer to that very question. It is a game where you decide, not the game, what you do. You are your own compass, you are the one that drives gameplay. So if I see posts that say: "there isn't any interaction anymore" that is largely because of the community, not the game. That is not to say that the game doesn't have anything to do with it, there's certainly things that will/can be improved that will encourage player interaction. But, when you play in the experimental vs the live build, I have seen a big difference on how people interact with each other. The game isn't any different from the live build (bugs aside), so what is it then that makes people interact? This is (again) a hard question to answer, but I think it comes down to dogma or what people believe DayZ is, or want DayZ to be. There are quite a few people that just kill on sight without any prior consent. Nothing inherently wrong with that type of gameplay of course, but it has consequences on the community. So if you are the victim of a KOS, you are less likely to act friendly towards a player the next time you see one. It's kind of a downward spiral. This is the reason why we are all so nostalgic towards the mod, it used to be amazing because it was all fresh and new. People were new and didn't really know how to act/react to the environment. That created hilarious situations and brought many interesting interactions between players. So the next time you see a player in your scope, wait a little. Maybe stalk him/her for a while and see if you can talk to the person. You never know what interesting things might happen if you do. Don't just think "oh, just another player to shoot". Right now, there seems to be a consensus that DayZ should about rushing towards a place to get loot and then rush towards the other place to get kills. This is the reason that PUBG is so popular these days. PUBG is also not a sandbox experience, it has a clear goal and guides you were you need to go with its circles of doom. DayZ doesn't have a clear goal, because its about you, the player. And I think this creates a big problem for a lot of players. Like agent Smith said in the matrix "It is purpose that created us, it is purpose that connects us, purpose that pulls us, purpose that guides us, purpose that drives us, it is purpose that defines us, purpose that binds us. I am here because of you Mr. Anderson" You see, people are lost without a purpose to drive them, like lost wandering souls... or a zombie? So maybe, dear player, you should set a goal for yourself within the game (any sandbox game for that matter) and see if you can still say "there is nothing to do". [link] [comments]

| Posted: 11 Jul 2017 01:57 AM PDT I spawned in l-shape and immediately spotted three players at the old barrack. They were running to my barrack, one was holding the entrance, other two were running around and try to spot me through windows. I made my first mistake when I gave up the entrance angle, moved to shower room, and after a few minutes one of them shot me in the back while I was peaking the corner, waiting for a push. I thought that there is no angle to shoot through the back window, o tried once but textures absorbed the round. Any advices for this kinda situations? Sorry for the mistakes, English it's not my first language [link] [comments] | ||

| How to make DayZ more convenient to competitive players (Mouse control wise). Posted: 10 Jul 2017 01:16 PM PDT The mouse sensitivity during aim down sights mode should be scaled for the 16:9 aspect ratio (mouse sensitivity will be 1:1 during aim down sights and during hip fire), as it is currently scaled for 4:3. With 4:3 scaling of the mouse sensitivity during aim down sights you will experience a drastic decrease in mouse sensitivity compared to when the player is not aiming down sights. You can test if the mouse sensitivity for aiming down sight is 1:1 by measuring the distance that your mouse moves when you turn your screen in-game relative to a fixed point, preferably an object at a great distance [to reduce parallax error]. In other words, the goal is to move your screen until an object appears to be on the left border of your monitor, marking where your mouse is with a pencil and then turning your screen in-game until the object touches the right border of the monitor and then marking where your mouse lands on the table. The distance that you have measured should be the same when you perform the test again when you are zoomed in. In short: the distance that you move your mouse during hip-fire is not the same as when you aim down sights, it is lower in aim down sights. This is a pet peeve to competitive players who want the same sensitivity through out all games. Solution: Make mouse sensitivity while zoomed adjustable by players, or use the 16:9 ratio for determining zoom ratios. [link] [comments] | ||

Geforce 750 Ti graphics card, Intel core I3-240 CPU @ 3.40 ghz (4CPUS), 8GB of ram, 1 terabyte hard drive. Anyways all this week I have been playing just fine 60+ frames in every server. But yesterday I started having issues in DayzNoobs server, my frames were going from say like 50 to 15 then to 5 then 60 then maybe 1 so on an so on. I've tried restarting the game nothing, tried uninstalling the game drivers got nothing, tried removing the game and re-downloading nothing... i've tried everything and still I get no positive outcome.. but lastnight when I switched to the blue waffle server I was doing okay i guess but now today its the same my frames are everywhere the game is literally unplayable.. idk if my graphics card is going out or what.. has anyone else had these problems maybe? please someone help :( [link] [comments]
