Minecraft Bi-Weekly Build Challenge #22: Wonders of the Ancient World

Posted: 25 Jun 2017 05:04 AM PDT

LAST WEEK'S THEME: FACTORY

Gold

KingKowen

Great use of colour in this build! It's made to look like candy or sugar and it does the job! The machines and the assembly lines had enough detail so that we knew exactly what they did and their function and it looked good too. Just one small criticism is that the outside of the building seemed a little plain with the one block type. But still, great build!

Silver

abrightmoore

Not at all what I expected but I still loved it! It was a really neat take on the challenge and I loved the story of how the worlds are being made and the way that all the colours on the planets blended together looked really neat. The only criticism is that station itself was a little bland on the outside. Maybe another layer on the side would give it a bit more depth and look better?

Bronze

EveGiggle

Another really neat build. Loved the use of conveyor belts and how he used different blocks to represent different stages of the cooling process. Liked the colour too, the only problem was the use of stone for the floor and the walkways outside. It made the build, especially the outside, look really bland. A better floor pattern or the use of another block outside would have given it a better feel.

Honourable mentions

Radioactive_Bee

Introduction

The pyramids, the hanging gardens...

These are but two of the wonders of the world! This time, we will be recreating these amazing structures in our worlds! Are you ready to inspire people? Maybe your build will be a wonder of minecraft someday! Let's see!

Inspiration

The seven wonders

Challenge

The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World : Great Pyramid of Giza, Hanging Gardens of Babylon, Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, Statue of Zeus at Olympia, Mausoleum at Halicarnassus (also known as the Mausoleum of Mausolus), Colossus of Rhodes, and the Lighthouse of Alexandria

Easy Mode: Look at the inspiration image. This contains the seven wonders. You must build one of these wonders. Recreate it either in our time (if you can), the time it was in its prime or during its building process. Please specify which wonder it is.

Hard Mode: All mentioned above however....

Look at the image of whatever wonder you chose. After you build it and take screenshots of it, you must take a screenshot of the wonder which matches the image of it in the inspiration. This includes the terrain around the wonder and other structures around the wonder. Try to match the image the best you can. Again, specify which wonder it is.

A Programmer's Perspective on Java Minecraft versus Other Minecrafts

Posted: 25 Jun 2017 08:21 AM PDT

I've been a hobbyist programmer for five years now, and have a decent understanding of what it's like to work with a decent size codebase. From a number of perspectives, I find it hard to see why Microsoft wouldn't want to switch to the non-Java versions of the game.

  1. The codebase is (almost certainly) cleaner. Minecraft's Java version started as a hobby program by Notch, who was just making something because he thought it would be neat to have a world of blocks inspired by Infiniminer and Dwarf Fortress. He did not expect Minecraft to get the traction that it did, and the Java codebase can show for that. As a general rule, typical hobbyist programs are sloppier and harder to work with than typical professional programs of the same scope. If Microsoft were to work with Java version over other versions, they would spend more time working with sloppier code, costing more money, for a version which has worse performance than the other versions.

  2. Other versions have a higher performance. In this day and age, people tend to look for games with better graphics and higher performance. Oftentimes on review sites, a section of their rating criteria is about the fidelity of the game's graphics. Why should Microsoft be promoting a game version with worse performance than their, higher performance, versions? Ex. I can render up to 12 chunks on my PC before it gets laggy on Java, but can do up to 48 chunks on the Windows 10 version.

  3. The sales are on the Unified/Community edition. According to this graphic, most Minecraft sales can be attributed to console and Windows 10 / mobile versions of the game. Why wouldn't Microsoft want to focus on the game versions that are making sales? It wouldn't make sense to focus on the version that sells the least in all regions (except Asia where it beats Console editions).

Microsoft is logically focusing on other versions of the game because it's easier from a programming perspective, game performance perspective, and sales perspective. They won't listen to the loyalty of the reddit community, because it doesn't make financial sense too. And companies, by nature, have to focus on the money.

Is it just me, or are explorer maps kind of badly designed?

Posted: 25 Jun 2017 02:45 PM PDT

Explorer maps are supposed to be like a fun little treasure hunt to allow you to look for and track down ocean monuments and woodland mansions, however, there's one major component to them that really kills the enjoyment of actually looking for them.

I traded my emeralds and a compass for an explorer map around 3 hours ago today, and following the instructions on how to use them, I proceeded to move southeast, as the map dictated. However, after 3 hours of moving in one direction, there seems to be no indication of any progression, and I'm already 12,000 blocks away from spawn, and 9,000 away from the village I bought it from.

After doing a bit of research, turns out that the explorer maps randomly select a woodland mansion, and may not even be the closest one to you, which seems like a massive waste of time and pretty much saps any fun out of exploring to find these things

According to my rough calculations, Steve/Alex are incredibly slow movers

Posted: 25 Jun 2017 03:36 PM PDT

After searching for 3 hours for a woodland mansion with no success, I decided to look into how far I actually travelled in that time, and the actual distance was....underwhelming.

I wondered why this was so and decided to look up the sprinting speed and do an analysis, and judging by what I theorise, Steve/Alex are painfully slow.

According to the wiki, Steve/Alex can run at 5.6 blocks per second. Each block is a metre in size, and therefor, 1,000 blocks = 1 kilometre.

Now I could be wrong with this, as I've not actually ran in a straight line in a flat creative world for 20 minutes as it would be boring as hell, so it's all estimation from here.

Calculating the distance they travel in an hour is easy. If they travel 5.6 metres in a second, then they must travel 336 blocks in a minute, meaning in an hour, they travel 20160 blocks. This is roughly 12 mph. Now while this seems impressive at first glance, the average Human running speed is 15mph, and a professional sports player or runner would be faster than that.

But here's the thing. Minecraft days last only 20 minutes.

This means Steve/Alex can only cover 6720 metres in a Minecraft day. Dividing this by 24 gives us 280 metres, meaning Steve/Alex can only travel 0.17mph, making them as fast as a Galapagos Tortoise.
