What's up Reddit Halo!

I'm Riley Hastings, and I'm a professional video editor who's worked on Halo montages for Team Beyond, Denial Esports, and others. Also here is X Games gold medalist and current Halo player for Team EnVyUs, Eric "Snip3down" Wrona (u/EDWSnip3down). This past Friday we finally got to release Snip3down's Halo 5 montage, which is 15 minutes of gameplay against some of the best players in the world.

Ask us about the montage, HCS, editing, or anything at all!

Do you guys want to know what's really killing Halo?

Posted: 25 Jun 2017 08:55 PM PDT

Do you guys want to know what's really killing Halo? It isn't smart scope. It isn't sprint. It isn't arena gameplay, and it isn't competition.

What's killing Halo is the people that play the game. Do you know one reason why Halo 3 was so popular? The community. People good or bad, Spartan or Elite, CoD or Halo or Battlefield got together and Forged, played matchmaking, set up 16 player Fat Kid lobbies. That's what made Halo the best game made.

Instead you are now torn apart if you aren't blatantly sucking 343i's dick or ripping it off with your teeth. People call you names, act like elitists, shit on your opinions, and absolutely hate you regardless if you hate the game or not. The only thing that changes is the username that is doing it.

What happened to constructive criticism? Most the threads that get upvoted to the front have that, but the replies inside are almost as bad as a YouTube comment page.

What happened to unity? People buying somebody a copy of Halo 4. Supporting an ill kid's YouTube. Creating and sharing fun custom maps and gametypes. Instead of arguing about someone being a Bungie fanboy, or a 343 shill. We didn't buy the games because of the developer's name, we bought the games because our love for Halo and wanting to see it succeed or grow again.

The community used to make Halo, Halo. It made it worth it to play over CoD or Battlefield. Now it's ruining the game.

What should Halo 6's Gameplay Be Like?

Posted: 25 Jun 2017 11:14 PM PDT

We like to touch upon the things 343 needs to improve for game quality going into Halo 6 like the lack of content, the campaign, the req system etc. But what about the Gameplay, the Meat and Bones of the game. How should Halo 6 play?. Should it be slowed down or kept like it is or maybe even speeded up. One thing we should agree on is that they have to keep it fresh, at least add new layers and mechanics into the game but at the same time still retain that halo formula and still make it feel familiar. With this being a very split community I expect many different answers so please tell me, What should Halo 6's Gameplay be Like? With a gameplay reveal coming maybe by the end of 2017 we should discuss beforehand.

How Many of You Have Halo Armor IRL?

Posted: 25 Jun 2017 04:24 PM PDT

Halo cosplay is some of my favorite to see. People get really detailed and really accurate with their builds and it really helps the game feel that much more real.

I'm curious how many of you here have armor/weapons of your own. Do share!

How long after a game against 343 in Castle Wars do you get the Ice Unicorn skin?

After way too many games of Castle Wars I finally ran into Unyshek. Does the skin come in a pack or will it just show up in my skins after a certain period of time?

Why is the crosshair towards the bottom of the screen in most Halo titles?

Posted: 25 Jun 2017 10:37 PM PDT

I just played back through Halo CE on the PC a couple of times, got some multiplayer time in, and decided to move on to Halo 2 Vista, which I had only played on the original Xbox.

Games For Windows Live was enough of a pain in the ass to have to deal with, along with the mouse acceleration and FOV fixes I had to hunt down. The biggest issue, and one that prevented me from getting too far in the game, is that Bungie decided to place the crosshair about 1/3 of the way down from the middle of the screen, contrary to Halo 1 (and pretty much every single FPS game up to that point) which placed the crosshair in the middle.

It made me feel like I was leaning back or something while playing. It was really sickening (literally), akin to playing with a really low FOV. I hardly ever get motion sickness, but the crosshair sure did it for me. On the console, it wasn't a big deal (neither was it for 3, ODST, or Reach when I played those) because I was using a controller (and thus moving around slower) and was on a CRT television. Also, I think I've been spoiled by PC gaming (wide FOVs, mouse movement, etc.).

A quick Google showed some of the points people made defending the placement of the crosshair, but most of them were silly, such as:

  • The game (and games after) is more vertical than Halo 1 was

Well, Halo 1 was a super vertical game, in both SP and MP, maybe even more so than Halo 2 for the most part. Also, if it's the vertical FOV we're worried about, you're missing out on what's going on below you, even if it's a little easier to see above.

  • It's realistic

No, it isn't. Well, hip-fire and a giant crosshair in your vision isn't realistic at all, but I'd imagine that if it were people would want the crosshair lined up with what they're actually looking at (in the middle of the Spartan's helmet!).

  • It helps line up where your shots are with your actual gun viewmodel

How? All you're doing is moving the camera up a bit. Most weapons in Halo are hit-scan, and the only benefit I could see is that your third and first person views might line up a little better, maybe? Still, I see no reason why this isn't an option you can change, or why they left this crappy system in the PC version, where it doesn't feel right at all (especially after playing Halo CE right before).

I couldn't find a fix for it, hence the complaining here. What do you guys think? Any workarounds? Do you like the lowered crosshair in Halo and Destiny?
