It's been a long time coming, but we've finally brought on one of our most requested guests: Alex19! We were super glad to have him come on the show, because there's a ton of things that we wanted to talk to him about. But first, for those who may be unfamiliar with him, let me tell you a bit about Alex. Legendary streamer and longtime hidden boss of Melee, Alex is part of the Norwalk crew of SoCal. Beyond that, he seems to have become a meme generator in recent years: from The Magic, to Alex19 isn't so great, to Armada's Brudder, to TOOOOOPH THE REEEEEEEEEEAAADS, this man has been responsible for so much funny shit in our community :3 Now that we were able to bring him on, there's a lot to talk about with him. As you may have heard, our new show The Reads takes some inspiration from Alex's impression of Scar, so we kick off the show by diving into the origins of that impression and seeing how much of it actually rings true to reality. Speaking of which, if you have more evidence of Scar commentary that sounds close to Alex's impression, PLEASE feel free to tweet it at Bobby and Alex, so we can finally settle this. ANYWAYS, on the subject of impressions: Alex is a master. We get to have a taste of some of his most well-known impressions, hear about why he chose to work on those impressions specifically, and also learn about the Kermit Scale of measuring vocals (for reference, Ice is 7/10 on the Kermit Scale LOL). Along the way, we learn more about Alex as a person and how his personality came to be the way it is today. I think that it is safe to say that there isn't many people out there in the world quite like The Magic. We also go deep into the roots of grassroots Melee by discussing the differences between old school combo videos and modern montages. Believe it or not, combo videos were SUPER important to the survival of Melee back in the day and, since all of us were around then, we talk about why that's true. The combo video holds a very special spot in the heart of this community and, without certain key videos, I'm not sure if we would still be here today. Content like I Killed Mufasa and Esports x2 were inspirations for many, and they just seem so different from modern day combo videos. Speaking of which, we also talk about the production of Norwalk's famous combo videos and the roles that Alex played in creating them. Then the subject of commentary comes up and I share some recent revelations that I've had while listening to Alex and Tafo commentate at Royal Flush. Smash commentary is in a special state, when you compare it to other esports, and we talk about that bit as well. It's on that note that we also hear from Alex what his experience at Royal Flush was like and get a feel of how the event went in general. I come to you today to reveal the commentary teams that we've assembled for Smash'N'Splash 3 for both Smash 4 and Melee. MeleeFor Melee, the commentary strategy was to include diversity between established talent sure to entertain and regional talent that is looking for a breakout moment. | going to the doctor again for my hands today Posted: 16 May 2017 07:44 AM PDT Im horrified that im never going to play competitive smash ever again. smash has always been my get away. Whenever im depressed or upset in general i could pick up a controller and dig into the game. I love this community and the people I've met through it and i dont want leave it all behind because of my stupid hands. I'm upset, angry and confused right now. i dont want my source of happiness to go away. I'm writing this with tears in my eyes, i just needed somewhere to write this. thank you smash community for everything. Edit: Thanks for the support guys. i really dont want to leave any of this behind. I'm being sent to a rheumatologist at some point within the next few months. Doctor wants to get my mental health and mood straightened out before anything else.... Since may is mental health awareness month, id like to talk a bit about what im going through right now. You can skip this if you'd like to. I have something called PANDAS syndrome (Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated With Streptococcal Infections) as of recently. This is normally something found in kids pre-puberty but i seem to have a weirder case as i am 18. Its something that messes with my heart rate, causes me to panic have random moments of panic and minor ticking such as swallowing before i breathe or focusing on breathing to much. The strep is very difficult to treat for reasons i dont understand. The strep is likely what is messing with my joints. I found a four minute video if anyone would like to watch. | OrionRank Recap Part 2/3: The Upcoming Players of 2017 Posted: 16 May 2017 12:07 PM PDT Link to OrionRank Qualification Thread. Hello everyone and welcome to Part 2 of OrionRank Recap. Today we will look at the rising players of 2017 and how they hold up to the Top 25 of last year. Links are above if you missed any of those post. CaptainZack
CaptainZack has made a huge improvement this year since UGC Open. At both supermajors he took 4th place and now has various wins over top players like Abadango, ANTi, Earth, Kameme, Marss, and Mr.R. CaptainZack has also had many other successes in majors and nationals Top 16ing most that he enters and taking names such as Kirihara, Locus, Mr.E, Ranai, and WaDi. Locally in Louisiana, he has been struggling to take sets from Samsora and is now 1-4 against him and will most likely be ranked behind him on their PR. He has also mentioned that Ness is a struggling match up for him which is evident by him being upset by SS at Midwest Mayhem Saga. While not upset too often, he has suffered from some losses to lower ranked players. For example, he has lost to Shoyo James who had a fantastic run at Midwest Mayhem 6 and lost a close 3-2 game against Some at Frostbite. Recently he has been breaking out his Wii Fit Trainer for the Bayonetta match up as he believes that she does quite well against Bayo. This might be coming back to haunt him after dropping a set to Pink Fresh at Royal Flush only winning one game with her. Overall CaptainZack has had a very strong presence in the smash scene this year and looking to be a Top 10 player. While his record looks great, he may still need a couple more top placing and wins to solidify him among the big names in smash. Samsora
Samsora's overall performance in 2017 has been pretty solid. Genesis 4 wasn't too hot of a performance for him but he has made up for it through Top 8ing nationals and taking 5th at CEO Dreamland. His placements for the 2GG Circuit have been respectable taking 9th and 17th for Midwest Mayhem Saga and Civil War Saga respectively. Samsora has taken a lot of big names beating ESAM, and Mew2King at SC LXIX, CaptainZack 4 times at 2 regionals, ANTi and 6WX twice, and VoiD at CEO Dreamland. He has shown improvement with the Meta Knight match up only losing so far to Ito and Ac but defeating DSS and ANTi. While Samsora said we will be practicing Bayonetta as a secondary it doesn't seem as if he has needed to use her with his rapid improvement with Peach. With CEO Dreamland being his greatest success so far this year, I am excited to see where he goes from here. Fatality
Fatality has become a fatal threat in 2017. Taking 2nd at one of the most stacked Smash 4 tournaments so far this year, the Falcon main now stands over wins on CaptainZack, Kirihara, Kome, komorikiri, Nairo, T, and Trela. Unfortunately, his other major placements do not line up with Civil War though. His second highest major placement being 17th and his lowest being 33rd makes you question whether Civil War was a fluke of greatness. Fatality still has great results in his region though. He doesn't' go to many nationals, but has attended 5 regionals in the Southeast this year. Fatality and ScAtt have been fighting for the number one spot on the Georgia PR and he is currently 4-3 in sets against him. Recently Fatality went to France to compete in MARS 2017 and placed second taking a very close loss to Glutonny, one of France's premier players. Other big wins Fatality has had so far this year are on Javi, Locus, and Ryuga. Fatality has shown that he has the potential to go far in a bracket, but he will not be able to title himself as a top 10 player if he cannot consistently pull off good runs in major tournaments. Circa | 6WX
6WX has been proving to be one of the front-runners of the Sonic meta this year. While he has not successfully made Top 32 at a supermajor yet, he has been able to either Top 8 or Top 16 every other tournament he has entered. He has had some incredible performances in SoCal at 2GG events taking MSM 85, placing 7th at Genesis Saga, 9th at Midwest Mayhem Saga and 5th at MSM 81. At these events, he has defeated Elegant, Marss, MVD, Pugwest, Tweek and Zenyou. On top of that 6WX had a stellar performance at CEO Dreamland. He placed 9th and beat CaptainZack and ZD, a rapidly improving Fox main from MD/VA. He also was close to beating ZeRo in a game 5 set lost stock last hit set. Other wins I have not mentioned yet are against falln, FOW, and WaDi. 6WX has a couple of questionable losses. He has lost to two lower ranked Fox mains this year. Eon at Genesis Saga and Felix at Civil War Saga. Other than that 6WX has a solid resume to be considered a Top 25 player this year. BSD | Elegant
Ever since his breakout performance at Abadango Saga, Elegant has been steadily improving and taking bigger wins over the course of this year. He has become one of the biggest Bayo slayers this year having won against CaptainZack, JK, Pink Fresh, Salem and tyroy and hasn't lost to one yet at a qualifying tournament. Elegant had a very strong showing in the beginning of 2017 taking wins over Fatality and Mr.E at Genesis 4 as well as bringing Dabuz to game 5 at Genesis Saga. While he underperformed at Civil War Saga, Elegant still has pulled great wins in March, beating ANTi, komorikiri, Pugwest, Ranai, Tweek, Tyrant, and Zenyou. While Elegant has pulled together quality wins throughout the year, he will need to keep pushing to do more if he does not wish to be outclassed by his fellow competitors. Shuton
It was debated whether Shuton would live up to the hype once he came to the United States to compete and place highly. Boy did he live up the hype and more. Shuton has proved to be a top threat and able to keep up and even surpass some of the top players today. Shuton's worst placement so far has been 13th at Civil War Saga which even then is better than most high level players. He has accumulated a bunch of wins on North America players such as Ally, ANTi, Dabuz, MKLeo, Salem, Trela, and VoiD during his time in the US or at NicoNico Tokaigi Cup. He also has won over most of Japan's top players like 9B, Choco, Earth, Edge, Kameme, KEN, Kirihara, komorikiri, and tsu. Shuton has struggled a bit with Bayonetta and has had losses to 9B, Hiro, ikep, and Salem this year but has still shown that Olimar can be a viable character in today's meta. He definitely can be classified as a Top 25 player and will most likely keep improving from there. SHI-G | 9B
9B has low key been gathering amazing results in Japan and the US. He has unfailingly placed Top 16 out of the 18 tournaments he has entered besides Sumabato 17 where he just fell short and obtained 17th. At Genesis 4 and Civil War Saga he has placed 13th and has defeated FOW, Mr.E, Ranai, and Rich Brown at these events. On top of that, he has defeated a lot of Japan's best this year including Choco (3-1), Earth (4-1), Edge (1-1), HIKARU (1-1), Kameme (3-0), Kirihara (1-0), komorikiri (1-0), Raito (2-0), Shuton (1-1), T (1-0), and tsu (1-1). While 9B has improved a lot since last year, he still needs to be able to secure wins on top American players to be ranked highly among his peers. WaDi
WaDi has had a decent showing so far for 2017 for someone who doesn't travel much. Civil War Saga was a let down from him being his only supermajor so far this year where he placed 49th and failed to take any wins from big names as well as getting upset by MVD. He made Top 16 at his only major, Frostbite, and took some solid wins with him against Ranai and Ryuga. His two nationals that he attended (Royal Flush isn't counting for this ranking), he has placed relatively well though. At KTAR XX he placed 5th and beat Mr.E while at Glitch 3 he took the event and beat CaptainZack, DarkShad, and Pugwest. WaDi has shown to have great potential in the past but with his lack of attendance, he has not been able to build the exquisite resume that his competitors have. If this keeps up this can harm him in the long run from being a Top 25 candidate. Ned
Ned has taken quite a few names this year and has been establishing himself as a top player. He has not been able to find his footing at supermajors and has been upset by the likes of Cacogen, Jan, falln, and Konga. Otherwise, he has been doing great and beating top players at majors such as CaptainZack, Larry Lurr, and VoiD at Midwest Mayhem Saga as well as Fatality at Frostbite. He took Midwest Mayhem 7 defeating Zinoto twice and placed very well at Midwest Mayhem 8 which included taking a set off of ZeRo. One weakness Ned has had this year is against Rosalina. He lost to 3 different qualified Rosa players and has not beaten one yet. Ned does have the wins to show he can be a solid competitor for Top 25 though but until he gets solid placings at supermajors he will falter behind the players who do. ikep
Ikep has shown that he carries a lot of potential this year to be a threat in the scene. While he did not enter Japan's major tournament this year, he was a part of the NicoNico Tokaigi Cup which was a qualifier for OrionRank 2017. Ikep took both Sumabato Tokaigi Qualifier and Umebura 26 beating players like 9B, Kameme, Rizeasu, Shuton, and Some in the process. On top of that, he has made Top 8 for four other tournaments he has entered this year and has also beaten Chanshu, Earth, and Masha. We most likely won't see ikep in Top 25 though until he has a breakout tournament in America and captures some high profile wins. tsu
Tsu has been quite a wild card this year. He started off with some respectable results in Japan taking 9th and 7th at SGC and Sumabato 15 respectively. He also took some solid wins off of Brood, Raito, and Some. He then completely bustered at Umebura Tokaigi Qualifier taking 33rd and losing to Kisha and Lea, a Greninja player who has been giving him a bit of trouble as of recent. Going through the last chance qualifier, tsu ended up going on a monster run at NicoNico Tokaigi Cup foreshadowing what was to come at Frostbite. He took 4th beating 9B, Kameme, Kirihara and Mr.R. At Frostbite we really saw tsu shine placing 2nd and having what is considered one of the best sets so far in 2017 in Grand Finals vs ZeRo after beating him in Winner's Finals. At Frostbite he took sets off of other big names like Kameme, Salem, Tweek, and VoiD. He placed poorly at FPS2 ending up at 25th. Tsu was sent to losers by Cashmere which showed his reoccurring Falcon problem and was eliminated by dyr. He redeemed himself with a Top 16 placing at Civil War Saga and beat falln and Zinoto in the process. He did not enter much throughout April but we see him failing to place Top 32 at Umebura Japan Major and losing to Lea again along with Pichi, one of Japan's best Falcons. Tsu has also claimed wins on Abadango, KEN, Shuton, and T this season at locals. Until he figures out his Falcon problem and polishes his Ryu as a solid secondary for his more troublesome match ups, tsu can easily stumble from the high seat he is in now and not end in the Top 25 by the end of the year. Having low points can easily harm his ranking more than the success his high points bring. Locus
Ever since Locus' surprise performance at ZeRo Saga, we have seen that his performance was not a fluke and he continues to climb the ladder of improvement. He is still has a strong presence in BC and fights for the number 1 spot there with Big D (2-3) and Captain L (3-0). While his run at G4 was cut short by Ally and Fatality, Locus has made some impressive runs this year. He made top 8 at Civil War beating his demon Ally along with Nairo, Samsora and Shuton. On top of that, he has made top 8 at Midwest Mayhem 8 and DreamHack Austin defeating Larry Lurr, MVD, and Rich Brown in the process. Locus has made quite the case for being a top 25 player this year and now with Trela retired, he has become the forefront of the Ryu meta. I am excited to see what he brings to the table from here on out. HIKARU
HIKARU recently was named the 10th best player in Japan. This year he has consistently been playing Top 16 at Japanese nationals and has taken smaller tournaments like Sumabato x Cyclops #1 and Shulla Bra X. His Civil War run is what sets him up as a Top 25 candidate where he made Top 8 and defeated strong players like ESAM, Konga, Mr.R, tsu, and VoiD on his way there. On top of that, he has accumulated great wins in Japan over 9B, Chanshu, Edge, ikep, Kome, and Nietono. HIKARU has definitely been shown to struggle with Rosalina as it is one of DK's worst matchups and he has not shown an answer for it. He is currently 0-3 with Kirihara and failed to beat Abadango's Rosa at Civil War. While HIKARU's run at Civil War was great, it may not be enough to make him Top 25. He has only Top 8 two Japanese nationals and has failed to take wins off of Japan's bigger names still. He also failed to place high at UJM and lost to Raito and Rizeasu for 25th place. Until HIKARU makes bigger waves in Japan, he will be surpassed by his fellow competitors. Choco
Choco has done amazingly well this year and has placed 3rd at 4/6 of the tournaments he entered so far. He has also been placing Top 16 in every tournament he's entered. He took 3rd at Umebura Japan Major losing to MKLeo twice but took sets off of 9B, Earth, Edge, Nietono, and Ranai. Aside from that, Choco also has victories over Abadango, Kirihara, Kome, Pichi, Some, T, and Umeki. Choco does not enter much but he is no slouch. He has been struggling with 9B though, being 1-3 in sets this year and finally overcoming him at Umebura Japan Major. Choco is definitely a top player in Japan and a top 3 ZSS player. Until he comes to the US it will be hard to gauge where he stands with the rest of the top talent. T
T is a mixed package of results and struggles to be consistent. He has shown he is a capable player with his run at Civil War alone claiming 3rd place. T has also had great placements like 13th at Umebura Japan Major, 13th at Umebura x Single-Chu and 5th at Umebura Tokaigi Qualifier. But at the same time he has had some bad results like 49th at Frostbite, 25th at Sumabato Tokaigi Qualifier, 25th at Umebura 26, and 49th at Sumabato 17. He has great wins like Abadango, Fatality, NAKAT, Nietono, Tsu, and Zinoto. But he has losses to Seagull Joe and a variety of Japanese players ranging from top players to not highly ranked players. Unfortunately, I do not see T making a claim for top 25 and Civil War has been a fluke compared to his over results. Umebura Japan Major is a step in the right direction, he just needs to keep up the success and consistently stay in Top 16s to make this year a sucessful one. Raito
Raito has silently been racking up amazing results in Japan and great wins throughout 2017. Besides his lackluster performance at Genesis 4, Raito has been making great strides in other tournaments and has proven to be the best Duck Hunt right now. In his CEO Dreamland run, he was just shy of Top 8 and impressively took sets off of ANTi, dyr, Larry Lurr, and Wormynugget. In Japan he hasn't slacked off either and has taken sets from Choco, HIKARU, Kome, Pichi, Ri-ma, and Some. Recently he even took a set off of MKLeo at a Japanese local (but unluckily it was post-Umebura Japan Major so it won't count for this ranking). Javi was listed as one of our Hidden Bosses of 2016 last year. This year he has really proven himself to be a strong threat in tournaments and is most likely the number 2 player in Mexico at the current moment. In Mexico, he has great placings at major events. He took both Smash Factor Prelude #1 and Smash Factor Toluca and also took 2nd at Arena 2017 and a set off of MKLeo. He may not have made as big of a splash at super majors but has placed 9th at Genesis Saga and 4th at Midwest Mayhem 7. He's taken sets off of Ally, Elegant, falln, NAKAT, Nietono, Regi Shikimi, Ryuga, and Tyrant. While he still needs more top wins to belong with the big leagues, he is on a good track as a breakout player this year. Kirihara
Kirihara is another player who we listed as a Hidden Boss last year who has exceeded our expectations. He has not failed to make Top 16 yet and in Japan has made Top 8 in all of the tournaments he has entered. In Japan he has taken sets off of Abadango, Choco, Earth, 3-0 HIKARU, Pichi, Raito, tsu, and You3. His performances in America has been better than some Top 10 players today taking Frame Perfect Series 2 while beating ZeRo twice, placing 5th at Civil War Saga, and 13th at Frostbite. He has claimed big wins on US players this year and has 3-0 ESAM. On top of that, Kirihara has taken sets from KEN, komorikiri, Larry Lurr, Locus, Mr.E, Ned, Ryo, Ryuga, tyroy, and ZD. He surprisingly has been having minor issues with Rain (0-2) and Ri-ma (0-2) this year and Umeki is his worse loss so far. Kirihara is looking like a potential Top 10 player this season with his wins and placements plus already taking a major tournament which most players can't even claim this year. Edge
Last but not least we have Edge, the Brawl legend. Last year Edge was not even considered for ranking and this year he now has a shot at top 25. Edge has been on a hot streak in Japan as of recent and didn't have a bad start to the year either with his worst placement only being 17th. He has already successfully beaten 9B, Earth, HIKARU, KEN, and Ranai this season. While there is not much else to say about Edge, we will get to see how he handles the top players and OSFrogs in SoCal at 2GGC Greninja Saga this weekend. This is all for part 2.
