Drafting guide (slight role guide) for newer players

Posted: 23 May 2017 05:59 PM PDT

Hey guys I know this has probably already been posted here but I just want to say I am still a massive noob when it comes to DOTA 2 with hardly any hours and lack of mechanical knowledge and stuff like that.

This guide has helped me so much in knowing what positions do what and with the knowledge of drafting and countering before I've even hit level 20 will help me study the meta and heroes aswell

I am trying to better myself as a player I have now started winning more pub matches and not dying as much.

That is also thanks to this subreddit also, so thanks guys!

Struggling with Drafting? Learn How to Draft & Execute with Success TONIGHT at 7:30 PM ET | #TeachYouTuesday Week 14 - Coaching through In-Houses

Posted: 23 May 2017 01:51 PM PDT

TeachYOUTuesday In-House Workshop Event!

In-Houses with Coaches, Casted with Analysis

Tonight, Tuesday 5/23, at 7:00 PM ET, we're going to continue our series with a draft focus at the beginning followed by matchmaking with a Coach for the novice players, afterwards we'll be discussing gameplay of the match in depth so that all players can benefit from it. When we move to the in-house portion of the night we will discuss gameplay of both teams' in depth across the game with a panel discussion at the end. Ideally we'll have a coach for both teams in this match.

Teach YOU Tuesday is a weekly educational series that will give new and experienced players an opportunity to play in a competitive setting without the pressures of toxic team members.

Anyone who participates in the game should be able to review the cast (along with having a coach live in the game) and should receive insight to improve their performance. Best of all, you can join as a solo player or full team!

Click HERE for the Sign Up Form

Note: Have you signed up in a previous week and see this message screen or want to update your info? Click the edit button, scroll down, select which game you'd like to participate in, and I'll see you tonight!

Participant Information:

Coaches will be focusing on guiding your team on how to be effective in communicating strategy in the pre-phase (drafting) along with active decision making throughout the game (shot-calling).

They should not be used as a crutch to rely on for guidance in the game but rather an information source for questions on itemization, ward locations, positioning, spell interactions, and any other questions that may come up. Since participants will need to draft and shot-call in conjunction with playing with new people, it's a great way for novice players to experience a more competitive style of the game, Captain's Mode.

What to Expect as a Viewer

You will learn how to draft a cohesive team that can win games with strategy more-so than direct skill. Most games are won or lost in the drafting phase, but not at lower MMR (typically). By building a strategy with a simplistic but consistent execution style we'll dramatically increase your chance for success!

There are two ways content may be delivered tonight:

  • Team Voice Comm Style

I sit in with one of the teams on Discord in order to allow the entire stream to hear how coaches are impacting the way the players are shot-calling, communicating, and affecting their habits.

I will be muted in the Discord to the players, and I will be providing commentary on how the coaches are leading and organizing the team. Creating cohesive drafts that accomplish something while playing with novice players can be difficult, so overhearing the communication may be helpful for the stream to listen to. For this style I would be focused on one team, either Radiant or Dire, for the entire match. We may have another caster focus on the opposite team (potentially with another live stream), details TBD.

  • Coaching & Analysis Style

Traditional casting style of discussing theory behind the "why" people are doing things, rather than strictly providing play-by-play hype.
I will be joined by a co-caster, preferably another Dota 2 Coach, who will assist in the overall analysis of the game while making notation of key points in the game for us to review afterwards. We will review those fight recaps, using immersive teaching methods (think Purge weatherman-style) to make it easily digestible information for all.

If you're a coach with experience in live team coaching, have dabbled in casting, and can stream, contact me regarding casting the opposing team's communication feed and providing commentary.

Game Format

  • Game Two: 10:00pm ET Start Time (time is based on previous game, could be earlier)
  • Open Skill Player Game, Novice & Advanced Players Welcome
  • No MMR skill cap, games balanced to the best of my ability based on registrants.
  • Note: Coaches may need to participate rather than coach depending on skill levels of players involved in the match.

If you signed up for a previous week and have not yet played in this Weekly Community Event, please DM me on Discord or post here and reference your sign up name. I'll do my best to get you included tonight.

Schedule for Tonight's Games

Our goal here is looking to teach you something that will impact your future games in a friendly environment. Participants should be able to re-watch the game and learn something in conjunction with getting live feedback from a coach in-game.

Are you a passionate coach who is skilled at their craft and are interested in #MakingDotaGreatAgain? or have you never tried coaching before but are interested in trying? Please DM me on Discord, fill in this form & mark Coach, or email me if you're interested in future events: thedotadoc@gmail.com -- We're a growing community based on helping everyone getting better together, would love to have you join us.

The Schedule for 5/23:
All times are approximates, and may vary by up to 30 minutes

  • 7:00 PM ET - Stream start, either one matchmaking game or going right into creating the teams for the first match while waiting for people to join the discord!

During this time, join us on the sKai HIGH Gaming Discord to be considered for the In-House Games set to take place after this match. Please have your solo MMR visible in your Dota 2 profile to participate in the In-House game. If you do not have MMR, we recommend over 200 games in order to alleviate frustrations over skill gaps. Smurf accounts are not allowed in the in-house games, all teams will be balanced based on this information. Get pre-authorized for the in-house here: https://goo.gl/forms/d3WJd0k9SspRo2gs2

  • 8:00 PM ET - Team Creation Starts for Game 1 - Novice Skill Game

  • 8:15 PM ET - Game 1 Start

  • 9:30 PM ET - Post-Game Analysis & Item Raffle to Participants

  • 9:45 PM ET - Team Creation for Game 2 (if not already done earlier)

  • 10:00 PM ET - Game 2 Start (if not already started earlier)

  • 11:00 PM ET - Post-Game Analysis

  • 11:30 PM ET - Item Giveaway to Participants & Viewers

  • Time TBD - Possible Third In-House Match?

  • Time TBD, end of stream - Immortal Item Raffle for All Viewers/Registrants

You do not need to be here for the bonus raffle at the end of the stream in order to be able to win the prize. As long as you've pre-registered, you'll be contacted via Discord, Twitch, or E-mail to claim your prize.

How do I get a fast level 2 on Crystal Maiden in this patch?

Posted: 23 May 2017 12:00 PM PDT

Does the old trick not work anymore? Frostbite a creep from hard camp, pull, frostbite another, level 2 - that doesn't seem to work now. I didn't really play since like 7.02, so did they nerf Frostbite or give jungle creeps more health/less exp or what?

How to tell the difference in neutral camps?

Posted: 23 May 2017 04:56 PM PDT

What is the difference between the hard, medium, small, etc. camps? I keep seeing references like "stack the hard camp" and I can't figure out what camp is what. Is their a map that shows this or does it depend on how many creeps are in the camp?

What went wrong in this Magnus game?

Posted: 23 May 2017 08:20 PM PDT

https://www.dotabuff.com/matches/3199777809

I went mid this game, and it started out beautifully, i had an easy lane against an Invoker that was playing really passively, farmed well and had my Treads/Blink/Echo Sabre completed in what I'd call a pretty good timing.

The game started going downhill however when at one fight I completely whiffed my RP, then tried to split push and got picked off immediately after, probably feeding a huge amount of gold. Late game just involved me giving Empower to Sniper and pray that we can defend the base, which we ultimately couldn't.

is there anything I could have done to comeback from this? Or should I just focus on landing better RPs :p?

Tips for going high ground in 7.06

Posted: 23 May 2017 05:34 AM PDT

Basically title. I've noticed my average game time in 7.06 is the highest it's ever been, around 50/55minutes - it's mostly because in every game around 35 minutes, the team with the advantage dances around going high ground. It's become so hard, that in many games even a 10-15k gold advantage doesn't feel comfortable, and half the games end with the team trying to go uphill getting wiped and then the defending team bombing down mid and skipping barracks. Anyone have good suggestions for going HG when the other team isn't leaving their base?

Transitioning from LoL to DotA2. Had 8 recommeded heroes to choose from.

Posted: 23 May 2017 08:08 PM PDT

So while I was googling "LoL to DotA2" for the transition guides, I stumbled upon DotaBuff's guide and its LoL-to-DotA Character recommends. I got :

  • Queen of Pain

  • Lina

  • Warlock

  • Rubick

  • Clinkz

  • Phantom Assassin

  • Spectre

  • Skywrath Mage

I need someone to give me the ELI5 versions of these heroes so I could pick one to start with when I start to play. Thanks a lot!

I've always seen these and I guess now I need one too. Can someone tell me what more I could've done in this game?

Posted: 23 May 2017 08:08 PM PDT

I just recently calibrated (to 1.3k) and learned that I'm probably not as good as I thought I was as (thought I was 2k material tbh). I believe you're only as good as your teammates at least when it comes to ranked as I'm sure the MMR system works. So instead of blaming my teammates can someone tell me what I should've done during this game (if you wanna do some of the others too I won't complain =D)

I just did a ranked game as Luna for the quest to get her skin. While I don't normally play Luna I felt I could have farmed more efficiently I just don't know how I could have.

Movespeed talents

Posted: 23 May 2017 08:41 AM PDT

I remember watching a Bulldong video where he was talking about talents and he said "if there's a movespeed talent less than +20, don't even bother with it" and since then, I've been sticking to this idea. Is it a good line of thought to have? It makes sense to me.

Players with 1 MMR (glitch/exploit?)

Posted: 23 May 2017 01:43 PM PDT

Occasionally I will see someone in a game with a displayed solo MMR of 1. Usually, that player ends up stomping the game with something like 20 kills and 2 deaths and the highest GPM in the match.

Then after the game, you look at their profile and see there's no way they could've been 1 MMR, simply because they've won a lot of solo ranked matches recently with very few losses, so even if they started out at zero, they should have gained several hundred MMR from the last few weeks alone. Here's one I encountered the other day:

https://www.opendota.com/players/376822142/matches

If you look at the match history, you'll see a dramatic switch on page 6. Looks like someone was deliberately feeding (every game literally something like 0/20/1) for a couple hundred Single Draft and co-op bot matches. Then no activity for a few months, then suddenly stomping 90% of games.

I mean, obviously some kind of abuse is going on, or a different person is using the account ... I know all these things happen, but what I am really curious about is how they get their MMR to keep showing as 1?

Weird thing about the match itself, this person played as Tiny and at about the 8-minute mark literally started one-shotting people from full health with Toss - no Avalanche, no items, just a bottle and mana boots. I didn't even think it was possible to do that based on the simple math of the thing. Game stats said his biggest hit was a Toss for 428, and I don't think any hero even has starting HP that low.

At any rate, is there a known bug that lets people display an MMR of 1? What on earth could these people be getting out of this? Doesn't make much sense to me. This is not the first one of these accounts I've seen either, just the most memorable because it was recent.

How do I play as Terrorblade?

Posted: 23 May 2017 01:59 AM PDT

I want to learn how to use him properly. Item builds and skill builds are very much appreciated.

I recently just played him and I feel like my micromanagement with the illusions was terrible and I couldn't get my items fast despite me, having illusions in which I can farm different areas.

Where to find fellow noobs? (Don't upvote)

Posted: 23 May 2017 03:43 PM PDT

I seem to be having the hardest time finding a fellow noob to learn dota with. I have about 200 hours in the game, and have only just now started getting into ranked. I would love to find someone at the same level as me, but most teams I play with are so toxic that I wouldn't want to play with them anyway. How do you guys find others to play casual matches with?

What resources are there for learning good positioning?

Posted: 23 May 2017 08:04 AM PDT

People have said that it's "just something that comes with practice" but I have been practicing and it is NOT working for me. Any resources out there giving explanations of why something is good or bad positioning and how to improve upon a position?

I have no idea what I'm doing wrong! Please help this helpless casual noob get past... 500mmr.

Posted: 23 May 2017 03:05 PM PDT

I don't play DotA super often and I'm really casual about it, but goddamn I cannot get past even 500 MMR. And I have no idea why.

I know a few things - I'm terrible at melee characters, I can't tank or jungle, and I'm much more comfortable as a support or at least partially a support. I try to do all the good support-y things: deny creeps, let the carry farm with last hits, place wards, but I know I sometimes do really stupid shit like accidentally double drop wards or put a ward in sight of another one already, and I'm trying to get better at those things.

I don't have a huge amount of versatility. Characters I play tend to be intelligence ranged characters - shadow shaman, death prophet, zeus, bane, disruptor, skywrath mage - with the exception of sven, tidehunter, and juggernaut I've tried playing a couple times, but I don't understand them as much. Also for the life of me I cannot figure out how to use blink dagger effectively (could be because it's a bit pointless on some of these heroes?).

I've heard that support+low versatilty can be a problem in low mmr games as it's near impossible to just solo something with these (rather squishy) characters if your teammates aren't great. Most games I do seem to be a really easy win or really bad loss, there's very few tight matches.

I've read all the guides I can think of, I vaguely know what items my character needs depending on how the game is going... I just have no idea what to do to win more consistently.

Now, fair warning: I know that I'm pretty shit at this game, but I'm looking for some actual advice if anyone has any, and telling me to "uninstall DotA" isn't helpful and I'll just ignore those comments. Here's my dotabuff if that helps at all? I have no idea what I'm doing. https://www.dotabuff.com/players/95675676

Thanks in advance for any help!

What happened?? [Troll Warlord]

Posted: 23 May 2017 06:46 AM PDT

So I just had this game of TW and the laning stage was almost perfect 60+/10+ by 10 and 2 kills and it was looking to be a great game. So out of nowhere, at least to me, the tides were turned and PA was suddenly a killing machine racking kills left right center and that created space for the NP to farm up his items very quickly and the rat started. I was at a loss at what to do and was going for silver edge to disable the passive of PA but that came too late as I keep trying to help my team secure kills but the tables were always turned back on us in an instant. I'm kinda confused at the apparent good start and the abrupt transition into almost a nightmare:O What did I do wrong and how could I have improved on it?

I admit that I'm not very good bad, but I thought I would have improved to at least 2k level by now.

If anyone feels like analysing my dotabuff profile, I'd be happy. I calibrated Int ranked and got worse than what I had for normal ranked calibration a year ago. I just wanna get out of 1k...

Who are some non-support heroes that can be played decently/good as support?

Posted: 23 May 2017 12:30 PM PDT

I'm looking for new heroes as supports. I enjoy playing as support, and was thinking about some non-support heroes that could be played as one, like str Morph or old 1,200 dagger PA.
Who are some heroes that can be played as supports, even tho not as perfectly as other traditional supports? Whgat are some good ways to play them?

It's just to have fun. Not serious ranked or anything.
