Heroes of the Storm - Try Hard For Good is Awesome.

Try Hard For Good is Awesome.

Posted: 03 May 2017 11:48 AM PDT

Just wanted to say a big thank you to Blizzard for bringing over some reputable League streamers who have a good fan base to play for a good cause. I watched Voyboy's stream last night and there was some amazing energy in that chat. He went 6-0 at the beginning of placements all with Sonya and people were going crazy. I want to say another thank you to all the current HoTS streamers that were watching Voyboy and contributing to the chat dialog, or sniping them in stream and then denying kids their money....It made for a great experience seeing people I watch constantly join in the same banter with me and enjoy watching. So thank you guys. Edit- wording

Tip: Pick Jaina for QM to avoid AFK Jainas

Posted: 03 May 2017 03:31 AM PDT

People throwing games just for the skin is a real problem, and I hope Blizzard finds a way to fix this issue soon.

In the meantime, it seems that most people throwing games are just playing as Jaina, the starting hero. Pick Jaina for yourself, and you won't be matched up with AFK Jainas, since you can't have two Jainas on one team in QM.

edit: you did it guys. Now there will be 1200+ Jainas waiting for QM. Turns out the "Storm" in Heroes of the Storm is a Blizzard. And that Blizzard belongs to Jaina.

I'm so sick of this map rotation.

Posted: 03 May 2017 08:52 AM PDT

I seriously love playing HotS but I am bored to death with all the maps in the current rotation. I want the variety of not seeing the same battlegrounds repeatedly. That's what keeps this game fresh and right now it feels stale - a crying shame for the touted 2.0 version.

Blizzard, if you do another event like this, please consider issuing account punishments rather than game specific punishments

Posted: 03 May 2017 01:36 PM PDT

First off, I'm glad the event is bringing more people to the game, and those of you who are giving the game a fair shot I hope you're enjoying it. That being said, there are those who are ruining the experience for new and veteran players alike because they already have their mind made up in regards to HotS and they only want to farm the skin as fast as possible. Next time there's an event like this, I think if possible Blizzard needs to issue account wide punishments that will follow players back to Overwatch. They really don't care if they get banned or suspended in HotS, so there's nothing to deter them from ruining games for others.

Hey, overwatch player here. Just wanted to say that we are sorry for all throwers

Posted: 03 May 2017 04:52 AM PDT

Hope that you understand that they are minioryty of our community. We know it sucks. Hope you guys will get matched with normal players.

Edit: to clarify- throwing doesn't mean plaing badly. It means dying, afking in spawn etc. on purpouse

This enormous album of concept skins by DigitalGhast is jawdropping

I can't believe how many of these are actually something that I can see being implemented, some are just silly, but this guy has an insane amount of talent:

There's so many it's hard to even select a few that are favorites but personally these ones stood out:

Post 2.0 release - Mastery taunts

Posted: 03 May 2017 03:36 PM PDT

I've played a considerable amount since launch and I've yet to see a single person use a mastery taunt. I actually had completely forgot about them until I went to the roster page and browsed some of my heroes. Needless to say this was a pretty meh trade off for mastery skins.

Shower Thought: The status effect "UNSTOPPABLE" doesn't actually protect you from the status effect "STOPPED".

Posted: 03 May 2017 11:12 AM PDT

Clearly, the obvious solution is to rename it "UNSTUNSLOWSILENCEBLINDROOTABLE".

Quality of life change, please Blizzard!

Edit 1: STOPPED is like STASIS, except your cooldowns don't... cooldown. Zeratul's Void Prison is the most well-known example.

Edit 2: I have been informed it should be called "UNSTUNSLOWSILENCEDISPLACEBLINDROOTABLE"

Findings from one week of chest data

Posted: 03 May 2017 09:37 AM PDT

First up, thanks again to everyone who recorded their chest results. After one week we've captured 2200 chests and 13000 items (counting rerolls) and I've made some initial observations:

TL;DR

Common Chest Reroll Odds:

  • 3C 1R has 20% chance to get worse, 38% to improve
  • 2C 2R has 62% chance to get worse, 28% to improve

Epic Chest Reroll Odds:

  • 2C 1R 1E has 33% chance to get worse, 30% chance to improve

Veteran Chest Reroll Odds

  • Count the # of items you really want (if you want any skin tints count as 3) and divide by 133 to determine odds of getting something you want in a reroll. Other 4 items have same odds/distribution as common chest.

PityTimer is not 18 chests:

  • Possibly 28. Appears that rerolls don't count and it spans spans multiple chest types (excluding Veteran)

Data pulled from my analysis spreadsheet

Odds of opening item rarity

Common Chest (3100 items)

Rarity Percent
Common 69.44%
Rare 19.26%
Epic 5.24%
Legendary 1.37%
20 Shards 2.6%
50 Shards 0.98%
1 Day Stimpack 0.49%
3 Day Stimpack 0.62%

Distribution of Chest Types

I exported the CSV and manipulated these in excel since I never got scripting help for Sheets. Did best effort to correct bad entries.

Veteran Chests Removing the guaranteed Legendary Item from a Veteran Chests results in nearly identical distribution of items by rarity as that of a common chest (see Figure below). The only outlier is a small handful of entries showing multiple Legendaries, can't tell if this is a statistical anomaly or erroneous inputs.

Distribution after removing guaranteed Legendary Item

UPDATE: Did some more math, this holds true for Rare/Epic chests as well (when calculating for 3 items minus guaranteed item), gives same percentages by item type as shown in the first table.

Pity Timer The pity timer is not 18 chests as reported here and here. I personally went 21 chests between Legendaries (with 17 rerolls in between!). Two people have reported it taking 28 chests, with a dozen taking over 20 chests.

Thanks for reading and I hope this helps with your rerolls. I'm currently working on collection tracking spreadsheet to help inform the expected shards based on what you want/own.

PLease Blizz can you change QM rules so Varian is classed as a tank

Posted: 03 May 2017 05:31 AM PDT

Dunno if everyone feels the same (I've talked to similar minded people in the game), but when one team has a Varian and the other doesn't get a tank it plain sucks.

It's made worse as he is often in games where it is all assassins. His Lock down of Charge and Taunt makes it such an easy kill for his team.

Edit: maybe him being a tank all the time is not the right answer. But having it so that there is at least a bruiser on the other team I think is a really good way to deal with it.

Hey, can we please get a megathread for the "I come from OW/LoL and I like Hots"-threads

Posted: 03 May 2017 02:36 AM PDT

It gets kinda annoying having the Frontpage loaded with the same threads. I get it. Many people are insecure about liking Heroes and want to upvote all threads that reinforce them and their opinion. But its really annoying when I want to see some discussion, but I only see the same kind of threads all over the frontpage.

Weird Question: Which 20 hero pack contains the most tailed characters?

Posted: 03 May 2017 09:02 AM PDT

yeah, it's a weird question I know it is but I really like tails. And as such I want to ensure that when I get the pack I get the one that gives me the most of what I love in that regard. I remember liking Diablo's tail so a pack that includes him would be preferred. Thanks in advance and I've always been interested in this game so maybe this will entice me to try the game out!

EDIT:

Thanks for the replies! I ended up going with the tank pack in order to get both Diablo and Dehaka which both have imo the best tails, and I flipped through them and saw some others I'd be interested in playing too so it should work out well for me! Now will I actually play the game? Maybe, it looks good and I've been meaning to get back into a MOBA and although League of Legends has this game beat in terms of tailed characters, I got bored of LoL a long time ago, so we'll see!

How to rage like a Canadian and never get banned.

Posted: 02 May 2017 11:49 PM PDT

With all of the disasters currently unfolding in QM (I've been on the front lines) and the relevant rage floating around, I figured I'd share the Canadian secret to raging profusely without punishment so that you can not only insult your teammates constantly, but be thanked for it by the very people you are insulting.

Step 1: Subtext, Subtext, Subtext.

Any two-bit american can call someone terrible at landing their Anub burrow charge, but saying so is obviously insulting and can lead to action against your account. No, the proper Canadian way is to draw attention to it without directly saying that you think they're useless.

"You ****ing suck at Malfurion. L2P N00b." is vastly inferior to. "Perhaps you should try Lucio instead, you won't have to worry about constantly missing your heal then."

In both cases, you're making it quiiite clear they suck horribly at Malf (I mean, how is that even possible but then I've seen people die to murky 1v1 as a tank), but to any non-canadians, you're trying to help them.

Step 2: I'm sorry (that I can't carry your scrubby ass)

Apologize. Often.

This sounds counterproductive, but when done right, it can be the perfect method to vent your intense disapproval for your team, without saying anything anyone could use against you.

The important part here is wording. Make it clear that you're apologizing for failing to do something someone ELSE should be doing, but that you could do in theory. Then call them out by asking them to do it. Point out that they're on a better character than you for it too if you want.

"Sorry team. I couldn't kill all five of them at tribute myself. Tracer just hard counters me. Varian, mind leaving lane to help me deal with Tracer?"

Point being, take "responsibility" for not being able to 1v5 the enemy team, then tell others they should be doing their job.

Step 3: Adopt a canadian goose.

This step is optional, but authentic Canadian geese have the ability to bond with humans, taking in their rage in exchange for bread.

Step 4: Master the disapproving glare.

Studies show you can feel a hateful glare through the internet. A simple "Valeera, why?" followed by extended silence makes it all too clear you're looking at their death timer with the look an adult gives to their three year old child. The one who was dropped on their head. Repeatedly. There's no need to go full american and enter into a tiltfit. Relax, stare directly at their death timer, question their logic, and assert dominance.

Step 5: Never go full american.

If you ever feel yourself approaching full american, relax, take a deep breath, remind yourself it is only a game and that when the enemy team claims their lives, you will still be alive, and thus better than them at everything.

Always be careful of going full american. It can lead to tilting. Symptoms include verbal diarrhea, a strong attachment to four letter words, and a craving for a stiff, non-maple drink.

Take it from a professional Canadian, if you rage right, nobody will know you've raged at all. And when you send your bonded goose to peck out their eyes, they'll never know it was you.

(Yes, this is 100% shitpost)

Want to punish Overwatch players that throw matches?

Posted: 03 May 2017 09:02 PM PDT

Give them a ban in Overwatch as a result of throwing games in HotS, as well as a HotS ban. They clearly don't care about playing HotS so only banning them in HotS won't do anything. Ban them where they'll care. Acting poorly in one game just so you can get items for a different game means you should get banned in both games.

Heroes of the Dorm - All Stars Tournament

Posted: 03 May 2017 01:02 PM PDT

Dorm All Stars

Dorm All Stars is a competition of star players from our Heroes of the Dorm Round of 64 teams. These players were drafted by our community casters and admin team who worked on this year's past Dorm. This tournament showcases the best of the best and tests a wide range of skills for each player. Each team will be made up of a mix of players from different schools. Most of these players have never played together, so we'll be asking them to build synergy and cohesion under a time constraint.

Draft Overview

In this draft members from the same dorm team were not allowed to be on each other's team. So if someone from UTA, our past victors, was picked for Halorin's team then Halorin is not able to get another player from UTA. However, other casters or the admins could pick other UTA players.

Each player that was drafted does not know who is on their team. This will be revealed on Saturday at 10am pdt during our draft show to encourage a level playing field.

Casters and admins have drafted teams that they believe will be the best. Friendly banter is bound to occur during the games. Out of Halorin, theSource, InVerum, and your admin team, who do you think will reign victorious?

Noob question: is it possible to "come back"?

Posted: 03 May 2017 09:12 AM PDT

I played my first Quick Play game last night, and the game ended up in the following situation: Everyone's lane towers were gone, all of my team's inner keeps were destroyed, and our core was at ~85% with full shields. The enemy team had all of their keeps and was a level or two ahead of us.

It's impossible to win under those circumstances, right? Is there any way other than "git gud" to come back from that?

Warcraft Lore as fast as possible, which isn't very fast (Part Three: The Rise of the Scourge)

Posted: 03 May 2017 09:10 PM PDT

Part One

Part Two

With the Orcs defeated and in internment, Humans were free to thrive again. Thanks to the help of Gnomes, Dwarves, and High Elves, King Varian Wrynn, son of Llane Wrynn, began to rebuild a new Stormwind on top of the ruins of the old one. He would later name his son after the King Regent and friend of Llane, Anduin Lothar, who gave his life to defeat the Horde at the conclusion of the Second War.

Go'el, found as an infant near the bodies of his parents, was taken into slavery. Renamed Thrall, he was trained to be both a strong gladiator as well as an intellectual. After several years of slavery, he escaped and encountered another Orc that told him about the corruption of the Orcs by the Burning Legion and the simplicity of how it was before. Learning of another Orc that aimed to practice traditional Orcish ways (Grommash Hellscream), Thrall began searching for his Orcish brethren. After finding the Warsong clan, Grommash was able to identify that Thrall was from the Frostwolf clan based on the cloth was wrapped in when he was a baby. Thrall then ventured to the home of the frostwolves, where he was trained in the old Shamanistic ways. After becoming more proficient with the elements than many before him, Thrall was visited by Orgrim Doomhammer, the Warchief of the Horde. After watching him in combat, Orgrim promoted Thrall to his second-in-command. Together they raided several internment camps, freeing countless Orcs. However, Orgrim was struck down, and Thrall inherited the position of Warchief, as well as Doomhammer, Orgrim's weapon.

Meanwhile, Kel'Thuzad, a member of the Kirin Tor of Dalaran (alongside Archmage Antonidas and Kael'thas Sunstrider) began practicing necromancy. The Kirin Tor became angry with the mage, believing this practice to be against the laws they should adhere by. Kel'Thuzad responded by leaving the Kirin Tor. Suddenly, he began to here the voice of the Lich King, Ner'zhul. The Lich King had been working to create the "Scourge," a powerful army of Undead, at the behest of the Burning Legion. Kel'Thuzad joined his ranks, and began recruiting cultists from nearby villages in Lordaeron.

Medivh - who was killed by Khadgar, Garona, and Lothar - possessed such great power that he would not be stopped by death. However, in death, he was freed of Sargeras's corruption. Wishing to save humanity after almost causing its doom, he returned the mortal world as a prophet. He warned Thrall of the oncoming threat, convincing him to move the Horde to the distant land of Kalimdor. He also spoke with the King of Lordaeron and the Alliance, but was unable to convince him like he convinced Thrall: The Alliance would stay and fight, no matter what happened.

Despite Kel'Thuzad's proficiency with the undead, the Lich King still required a champion to fulfill his plans. He set his sights on the Prince of Lordaeron, Arthas Menethil. Arthas was a paladin, and an apprentice to Uther the Lightbringer. Arthas was sent, alongside Uther and Jaina Proudmoore (Arthas's lover and a powerful mage) to investigate reports of attacks on towns along the northern borders of Lordaeron. What they found was horrifying: the undead were roaming through towns and destroying them. The fallen humans were raised again as the undead, just adding to their ranks. Even worse, they found infected grain that would cause anyone who consumed it to turn into a zombie. Jaina and Arthas found and killed Kel'thuzad, but it was too late to stop his infected grain from being shipped everywhere.

Arthas, upon discovering an infected town, proceeded to kill the inhabitants so they could not come back as the undead. Horrified by his actions, Jaina and Uther left him. Before he left, he was promised a chance at vengeance for the killed humans in Northrend. Medivh contacted him, and warned him not to go, but Arthas ignored his warnings.

In Northrend, Arthas found Muradin Bronzebeard, a dwarf and childhood friend who had ventured there to find the legendary weapon Frostmourne. Arthas prevented his people from returning to Lordaeron before his vengeance was complete by destroying their ships, leaving Muradin horrified. As the undead advanced on their encampment, Arthas and Muradin found Frostmourne. Despite Muradin's warnings that the blade was cursed, Arthas still took it up (almost killing Muradin in the process), and slew a dreadlord with it. By using the blade, his mind was claimed by the Lich King. Forever.

Jaina was then contacted by Medivh, who told her to move to Kalimdor as well. She listened, and took a fleet of ships over the sea in between. Several months after he disappeared, Arthas returned to the capital of Lordaeron, and slew his father, destroying the last that held Lordaeron together. As refugees fled to Stormwind, Arthas razed Lordaeron, converting inhabitants to the undead. He reclaimed the body of Kel'thuzad, and stored his ashes inside of a special urn. However, to get the urn (which initially contained his father's ashes), Arthas was forced to kill Uther, his old mentor. In order to resurrect Kel'thuzad, Arthas needed a vast source of energy. The only one he knew of was the Sunwell, in the High Elven city of Silvermoon, capital of Quel'thalas.

Breaking through to Quel'thalas was difficult - the elves mounted a grand defense, headed by Ranger-General Sylvanas Windrunner. After breaking through both the forest and a series of magical gates, the Scourge was able to enter Silvermoon. Arthas then beat Sylvanas in combat, but did not grant her death - he turned her into a banshee, an eternal servant of the Lich King. Arthas then resurrected Kel'thuzad using the Sunwell - corrupting it and creating a new Lich. The two then left Silvermoon in ruins.

In order to combat the threat of the Scourge in his region of Lordaeron, King Genn Greymane of Gilneas (who did not join the Alliance, believing that the Gilneans could withstand any threat), had his mages summon the Worgen - a group of Druids infected with a werewolf-like curse. The Worgen fought off the undead, but it would later prove to be a mistake: the Worgen would turn on their masters, infecting them with the Worgen curse.

Prince Kael'thas Sunstrider, who was in Dalaran (the home of the Kirin Tor) at the time of Quel'thalas's invasion, rushed home to his people. He found his father dead, and the Sunwell corrupted. He renamed the High Elves to the Blood Elves, in honor of the fallen, and led his people in destroying the Sunwell. They did so using the three Mooncrystals, which Kael'thas would later keep floating around his head as a reminder. The Blood Elves, who had relied on the Sunwell for magic for generations, were left in a withdrawal, and in need of a new source of magic.

Arthas and Kel'thuzad then went about opening a portal through which the Burning Legion could invade. In order to do so, they laid siege to Dalaran to obtain the Book of Medivh. Using the book, they summoned the Eredar Lord Archimonde to Azeroth, who took control of the Scourge and destroyed Dalaran. He then set his sights on the rest of Azeroth.
