Thursday Teaching Thread - Beginners encouraged to ask questions here! | May 04 - May 10

Posted: 04 May 2017 10:00 AM PDT

Remember to scroll down to the bottom or sort comments by new to make sure all questions are answered please.

Welcome to the latest Thursday Teaching Thread, where you the community get to ask your questions and share your knowledge.

This is an opportunity for the more experienced HotS players here to share some of your wisdom with those with less expertise. This thread will be a weekly safehaven for those "noobish" questions you may have been too scared to ask for fear of downvotes, but also can be a great place for in depth discussion if you so wish. So, don't hold back, get your game related questions ready and post away, and hopefully someone can answer them!

If you wish to just view top level comments (ie questions) add ?depth=1 to the end of the page url. If you have any additional questions after this thread starts to disappear from the front page, /r/nexusnewbies is happy to help.

What if: Blizzard made Mastery Hearthing Animations instead of Mastery Taunts?

Posted: 04 May 2017 11:15 AM PDT

I think we can all agree that Mastery Taunts are about as successful as the original taunts.

BUT, we always back. Hearthing is a fundamental part of the game. Why not have Mastery Hearthing animations?

If it's too hard to make new animations they could just change the hearth aura, almost the way diablo 3's Monk had auras.

This would achieve a few things over Mastery Taunts:

  • These animations are already used so the work will enhance the game.
  • Hearth Animations would let people continue the tradition of using b-stepping to communicate.
  • B-stepping is very easy and does not have the restriction of a lockout animation. You choose how and when to use it.
  • Whether hearthing home or b-stepping, your mastery animation constantly reinforces your achievement multiple times a game, the way Mastery Skins used to.

I'd love to hear what everyone thinks. If you like this idea let everyone know YOUR ideas for animations and auras. Personally, I love Dehaka's whipping motion when b-stepping and would love to see more cool stuff like that.

Does it bothers anyone that Probius's cannon and pylon doesnt change with the skin?

Posted: 04 May 2017 09:21 AM PDT

Bought the ascendent probius prime skin, and I was disappointed that the cannon and the pylon is still yellow in colour, while I'm in my badass black and purplish theme.

Does it bother anyone? Or is it just me?

Edit: wow, never thought this will be my first post to be in the front page. Let's hope the devs see this and reconsider making multiple tints for the summons too :D

Lunara attack Brightwing! Brightwing turn Lunara into sheep! Brightwing friends attack Lunara! But Lunara sheep still run away very fast! Brightwing sad! :(

Brightwing wonder if when making sheep, sheep should actually move at sheep speed instead of boosted fast speed?

Brightwing thank friends for listening!

[EU] Disconnected from Battle.Net when loading Heroes of the Storm?

Posted: 04 May 2017 10:47 AM PDT

Is anyone else getting a ''ERROR you were disconnected from Battle.net'' message when trying to start up HotS?

Edit: Seems everyone is having the issue, not just EU. Most likely due to the new patch dropping. Oh well.

I would honest-to-god make Nova a specialist

Posted: 04 May 2017 01:05 PM PDT

I think most people agree that nova needs ... something. The lattest rework was not exactly a success but I think it kind of reveals ways in which Nova could be reworked again into something more useful than the current role of "QM annoyance".

When Nova was viable in competitive it was as a nightmare that filled everything with burst damage and then ran again. And this wasn't a desirable outcome. That was way too annoying. So just buffing her is not the answer. But what about reworking her into a specialist?

She wouldn't have to stop being the stealth finisher she is today. But she would also be able to bring tactical utility for her team. The key ideas are what follows:

  • Make her bribe talent baseline and this becomes her new trait. Nowadays many heroes have access to stealth so calling her stealth her trait is a bit unfair. Make it so her bribe ONLY gains stacks with takedowns, or perhaps with properly hitting heroes.
  • Her attack does 50% damage to minions when cloaked BUT it doesn't reveal her. This is only against minions, attacking mercs and other non-heroes still reveals her. Alternatively, it could be that snipe can be used on minions without revealing her.
  • Snipe master adds a slight damage buff with every hero hit, but it isn't lost when she misses, only when she dies.

The reasoning for all this is that you can already play her as a specialist in QM. If you were so ridiculously stupid (I am). She already has hints of things that could work for this manner:

  • Her bribe talent allows her to steal camps, like murky.
  • Her cloak allows her to soak lanes in safety, like the poorest man's TLV.
  • Properly talented W is cool to deal against bosses or other large siege creatures. Like Az's laser.
  • Precision Strike can be used to one-shot a minion wave, like Ragnaros' lava wave.

So in a way she has quite a bunch of tools that make her kinda good as a specialist. Add her ability to finish runaway heroes and she starts to sound like Azmodan - A split soaker that can be an opportunistic finisher.

More so, this actually fits with her fantasy. Ghosts are specialist units and Nuke is the quintessential siege ability. And Nova is the kind of gal that disrupts whole armies through stealth.

I've been playing like this and it's pretty fun. She's sort of an anti-murky. In fact, she's kinda designed specifically to deal with Murky, being able to deny him with burst and counter up his merc pushing with mercs of her own.

Double healer meta is a thing. Some tips on how to draft for it, play against it and a suggested fix.

Posted: 04 May 2017 08:01 AM PDT

(opinion piece) why is double healer strong?

  • Healing output and ultimates are arguably stronger than the damage being directed at targets in a sustained fight. Especially non focused HL matches.

  • This "change" has come via armor and lower health pools of tanks. Good healers were already able to save back line targets, but fights tended to be lost in a sustained fashion because the front line would be neglected long enough that they'd die and the fight would snowball from there.

  • why does armor effect healing? with the balancing of tanks via (+) armor (-) health their effective health pool ended up being ~ the same amount. The huge shift is that any heal ability on a tank like vaian with 15 armor adds 17.65% more effective health to him than it did before he had armor. to put this in easy terms, every healer got a free talent of "all healing abilities heal for 17.65% more when playing with varian." Same goes for other tanks.

How to draft for double healer (this is not end all, just my suggestion)

  • easy, just like picking assassins in a typical draft you should aim to have a sustained healer and a burst healer.

  • A great example would be pairing an auriel with gul'dan and then a lucio, malf or brightwing for sustained healing. The auriel would then primarely heal focused targets while malf would constantly be keeping everyone topped off. in this comp gul'dan would just poop out damage long enough that the enemy team would be out sustained while not being able to kill anyone in the front line.

how to play against it

  • long cooldown mages like jaina and sustained damage (scoreboard picks, i like to call them) like nazeebo are a NO. heroes like that will never get kill pressure through the healing of the opposing team.

  • If you're trying to win the team fight your team needs single target heroes for burst. First you need set up for your target which means a tank with a stun/root Varian, murradin and arthas come to mind. mages wise you're looking at falstad, and li ming as great examples of heroes able to hit a single target with a lot of burst instantly. diving out of position healers or damage (since their comp will be light on burst) is a good strategy. beating double healer isn't easy though, a strategy like this could still easily fail as your team has a much smaller room for error than theirs does.

  • play the map, split pushing and cheesey strats are very good vs double healer because if you assume you're going up against 2 healers and 1 tank, one of their lanes will have a weak push potential at worst. at best they just can't clear lanes for $H*%

Suggested fix! (which could suck, but i welcome any opinions!)

  • healing abilities should be nerfed around 15-20% across the board (maybe only basic abilities?). I personally think healers feel good when they can effectively turn a fight by saving their carries. Their ultimates are mostly used to do this while basic abilities are currently getting too much value.

edit : i really like the discussion on town hall ep. 143 about PTR. Instead of using it to test hero changes now and then they could spend a week or two testing wild sweeping changes like x% across the board buff to damage, nerf to health, nerf to objectives and others like this. adding an unranked draft only, for balanced teams and therefore testing, could get great data on how effective big changes are.

Why did I wait so long to try out HotS?

Posted: 04 May 2017 09:48 AM PDT

Oh, that's right, because I spent 30 minutes in LoL and never wanted to try it again.

I came over for the Overwatch Skins, (No I'm not throwing. That's a horrible thing to do.) but I'm enjoying it so much I think I'll be here for a while.

Any advice for a new player?

For new players having trouble with Valeera, play Raynor and pick the level 4 talent Relentless Leader + improved tip to see cloaked heroes.

Posted: 04 May 2017 08:18 PM PDT

Raynor not only has scouting Drones (Reveal) + Selfheal he also has the talent:

Relentless Leader

Being Stunned or Rooted knocks away nearby enemies.

This effect has a 8 second cooldown.

This will make you immune to her opening.

And here is the tip to spot cloaked units. We all know that we need to watch out for the shimmer (not as easy as it seems for new players), but here is the deal to make it even easier to see, stop moving your camera. Our eyes are very sensitive to movement, so when you suspect that there is a cloaked hero, get to a safe spot and stop moving your camera. Try it!

Posts requesting the end of the limited map rotation have made it to the front page 3 days running. I know the HotS team is busy but can we get any official comment on this?

Posted: 04 May 2017 10:11 AM PDT

Pretty much what the title says. A new post from different users complaining about or requesting the end of the current limited map rotation has made it to the front page of this sub at least 3 days in a row.

There's definitely some disagreement and debate in the comments to those posts but the massive number of upvotes for these posts over multiple posts/days would seem to indicate that the limited map rotation is a big issue for many members of the community. For whatever reason, likely just being busy or not seeing them, none has gotten a response from blizz.

To be VERY clear, I don't believe we're entitled to a Blizzard response to every issue the community brings up, but this seems to be a big one and the HotS team is generally pretty awesome about offering their thoughts/reasoning on such things, even when they go against what the community is asking for.

So this is simply a request to get any comment on the issue if anyone on the team has time. Regardless of if they are still in favor, against, or reconsidering the limited map rotation, their viewpoint and reasoning would be great to hear so that the complaint threads can end. Thanks!
