There should be a Tavern Brawl in which you play vanilla Hearthstone. Just like before Blizzard released Nax.

Rank 25 Standard is scary as shit now.

Posted: 07 May 2017 07:31 AM PDT

I remember back in the day when you would cue up for Ranked 25, it would basically be a cruise on the path to Win City.

"O dudes with Goldshire Footman and Silverback Patriarch? Move out of the way peasants, and look at my bomb ass golden Harrison Jones, stealing treasures out of Temples and shit."

Now its like cueing against...against MONSTERS. Every deck at Rank 25 now is like "Quest Rogue." "Quest Warrior (Discount Version).", "Murloc Shaman." "Tempo Shaman." "Quest Mage (TIMEWARP ME BACK INTO 2015 PLZ)."

Every deck is a net-deck, and the people are MOSTLY not playing like shit too which is a real bummer. I remember seeing people playing off-curve, just generally not doing well, now adays everyone plays perfect, seems to get perfect RNG, and just wreck you with whatever Quest Deck or Tempo deck they have.

Try queing in with a control deck and watch your world burn before your eyes. This is a dark timeline indeed.

[Analysis] Does the rank 5 floor significantly shorten the legend climb? And how long would a monkey take to become legendary?

Posted: 07 May 2017 05:08 AM PDT

Inspired by this, I wanted to look at how much the new rank 5 floor shortens the final grind from rank 5 to legend. I've listed the expected number of games, for various win-rates.

  • "With Floor" means you cannot drop below rank 5.
  • "Floorless" means that you can drop as low as 20.
Win rate Games to Legend (With Floor) Games to Legend (Floorless)
5% 1.09*1032 ??
15% 1.18*1019 ??
25% 2.54*1012 ??
35% 38,001,664 ??
45% 7,996 114,416
46% 4,249 24,303
47% 2,404 7,487
48% 1,454 3,066
49% 941 1,542
50% 650 929
51% 476 617
52% 366 447
53% 293 342
54% 242 272
55% 205 227
56% 178 193
57% 157 167
58% 140 149
59% 126 134
60% 115 120
61% 106 111
62% 98 102
63% 91 94
64% 85 87
65% 79 82

At a 50% win-rate, the rank 5 floor shortens your climb from r5 to legend by ~30%

For fun, I extended the analysis to absurdly low win-rates. At 10 mins per game, a 5% win-rate monkey would take ~1 Trillion times longer than the age of the universe to reach legend, from rank 5.

Note:

  • The results were a bit surprising to me. I didn't realize how long it would take to reach legend with a 50% winrate. Even with the r5 floor, it takes 650 games on average! That's some serious dedication. The struggle is inversely proportional to your winrate It really makes me doubt the idea that using a mediocre winrate aggro deck could ever outpace a slower, high winrate deck.

  • All other analysis of this type used simulation. Which means, the more times you run the simulation, the closer to the true value you'll get. The novel thing about my analysis is that all numbers were calculated explicitly. So I get the true values on the first go. And I can work out silly numbers (like 5%) which are impossible through simulation (I'd be happy to explain how, if anybody is interested).

TIL you can still "pre-purchase" Un'Goro if you haven't already.

Posted: 06 May 2017 07:55 PM PDT

Un'Goro, was the first new set to come out since I started playing, and during the run-up I was going back and forth on whether or not I wanted to make that plunge. At the time I had more pressing expenses, so I had to pass, but I left the tab open. I came back to it a few days later and found out it still loaded, and just tonight I finally pulled the switch. I got 50 packs and the promo card back, just like I would have if I'd actually pre-ordered.

Anyway, I just wanted to share that for anyone else who may have "missed" it.

Edit: Here's a link to try for yourself.

What was the 'bad' card that you didn't understand why would anyone play it when you were a noob?

Four of a kind in the same pack - has anyone ever gotten five?

I was too excited to take a (good)picture of this amazing HUNTER moment!

Posted: 07 May 2017 07:34 AM PDT

So this just happened to me today and I could not believe it myself I had to share this monent.

This happened in a new deathrattle control hunter deck I made that is surprisingly very good! I'll post a devklist later today for anyone interested.

For context, Barnes pulled Rag, I immediately moat lurker rag(For full 8/8) Played Princess huruhan on moatlurker AND feign death for 2 more rags then finally drew the original a turn later. This was a Paladin matchup.

After playing this game as a Priest-Main casually since just before Naxx, I finally unlocked my Golden Anduin/Tyrande Portrait!! It was a difficult slog though, I stopped for a good 6 months after GvG and came back right on time for WoTG for the free C'thun, which got me back into Hearthstone after having lots of fun with C'thun Priest. Kharazan was another low point in terms of win-rate, but strangely enough it was one of the expansions I enjoyed the most as I picked up Malchezaar Rez Priest, which had some pretty insane highlights. With MSoG the win-counter started shooting up again as I played both a version of Kiblers Reno Shadow Priest and Kripps Chansey OTK Priest (which was an absolute blast), until we get to today, where I finally hit 500 with a homebrewed Elemental Lyra Yogg Priest list! Loving this game so much now (even with Caverns and Patches :D), looking forward to what fun new tricks the developers brings in for the class over the next few years. Thanks Blizzard!

Miracle priest appreciation thread

Posted: 07 May 2017 06:20 AM PDT

Here are some of my favorite moments with miracle priest.

People called it a "meme deck" but I have a very high win rate with it so far, and if you pull off the combo its an instant win because people don't expect it but even if you don't it's still a very solid deck.

If more people want it I'll post the decklist and how to play etc :)

I know my rank isn't that high, but I didn't play for a while until I decided to open 40 packs and got golden lyra. Only started playing a few days ago and messed around with other decks but this one seems to give me the most stars
